Another technical coup is his 1999 Air Chair, an elegant, relatively inexpensive moulded dining chair made from a single piece of plastic using Magis’ new gas injection technology. A decadent setting of healing, imagination and transformation, the bathroom is taciturn space of pacific flow and serenity; a place to unwind as our day unravels. spread of white full across its living room and foyer. Luxurious indeed, is its balance of life and style, comfort and class. Throughout the abode’s expansive space, we find ourselves consistently romanced by its charismatic aesthetic and embraced in its lucid warmth of home. In conceptualizing the space, Selina and Calsia agreed on three things. They wanted to keep the aesthetics clutter-free whilst steeping it in the theme of contemporary classicism. Here, simplicity must take centre stage. They also desired for the home to possess both wet and dry kitchens. But of course, right – given that Calsia runs her own carpentry business? Well, almost. This third requirement actually stemmed out of the duo’s love for cooking, and hosting frequent gatherings and home parties for friends and family over the weekends. Their social hobby is reiterated through the open plan concept of their abode. In fact, such is its interior architectural lay-out that the eye is blessed with a full view of the living room, dining area and kitchen from the foyer. So how then did they go about realizing their own dream home? Designed by Selina, she tells us that it all lies in artfully playing and balancing contrasts through a keen knowledge of materials, their textual properties and interior architecture. At every turn, opulence must meet with homely humility; classicism necessarily marries modernism; and height complements depth in elegant equilibrium.

A

signifier of affluence, the home often strives to be aesthetically impressive, oozing sleek charm and opulent perfection. A place

where the heart is, home also necessarily exudes warmth, allows for imperfections and makes room for spills and other such accidents to reside. A single space with opposing definitions and significances, the question that we find ourselves asking is: Can splendid living really take place without a clinical outset? Walking into this three-bedroom abode at Parc Oasis, we are assured with a resounding yes. Full across its 2 000 square feet, the apartment is obviously polished without lacking the call of home. From room to room, sleek finishes boast of grandiosity as its unique palette of bold and earthy tones paints a classy visage. Homeliness, on the other hand, finds voice in the Asiatic nuances that accentuate the home. Paintings, feature furnishings and bespoke motifs on glass doors and wall features create an unmistakeable sense of rootedness that lends identity to the otherwise contemporary anonymity of its design scheme.

The use of the red accented kitchen appliance and stools instils drama and modern twist - a great way to make a strong statement.

LEFT With a luscious view of Malibu spread before you, moments of siesta has never been this splendid.

A

veritable genius at creating masterpiece homes, designer Martyn Lawrence Bullard is renowned for his broad range of

styles and eclectic yet sophisticated and always inviting interiors. His extraordinary attention to detail and commitment to quality have won him international acclaim and by Architectural Digest’s ranking, a steadfast place amongst the world’s top 100 interior designers. The key to his success lies perhaps in his singular design vision: To transform homes into luxurious sanctuaries that meet the needs of his clients. Given his amazing track record, it is almost unsurprising to then find out that his clientele is nothing short of A-list. Should you thumb through his portfolio, you will find it brimming with residential projects for the likes of Ozzy and Sharon Osbourne, Cher, Christina Aguilera, Kid Rock and Elton John. And as if that isn’t dazzling enough, his repertoire of works also includes designs for executive offices at Warner Brothers and Paramount Studio. So when we were given a second opportunity to road trip through that star-struck portfolio of his, we absolutely jumped on. This time our pit-stop is the home of the ever gorgeous lead actress of Grey’s Anatomy, Ellen Pompeo.

CLOCKWISE Relaxed and natural feeling, glamour is added via the large rugged mirror and pierced Moroccan lanterns. Three things we clearly adore about this kitchen – its industrial chic schematics, hexagon-shaped terracotta tiles and a wide open concept wooden cabinetry. Yet another classic characteristic of the Mediterranean style home, the stucco fireplace crowned by a small niche makes this seating alcove a cosy hang-out.

Yet retained within an antique Egyptian textile headboard are hints of red that stands in bold contradiction to the tonal mainstay of the room. On the one hand, it works to lend an exotic highlight and on the other a perfect accentuation of romance. As we drank in the beauty that is Pompeo’s house, we could not help but be in awe of Bullard’s creative genius. Consistently, the rooms are cultural canvases of classy casualness, sophisticated comforts and modern rusticity. Whilst our favourite spaces are the kitchen and dining room, Bullard holds a soft spot for the living room. “I live the elegant proportions and volume of her living room. The ceiling height is so dramatic and the simple exotic furniture highlights the architecture whilst allowing it to shine. Indeed, a magnificent place to entertain,” says Bullard. private pleasures Bathroom indulgences can be wickedly sinful. As sanctuaries where one is able to afford quiet moments and a tad of “metime”, bathrooms should ideally be decorated to pamper and delight. This issue, Belle Chung ponders and explores the aesthetic components that transform our bathroom spaces into absolute delights.

*sinks__

So are sinks pivotal to our bathroom

THERE ARE SOME HARD TRUTHS ABOUT SINKS:

for its wisdom and aesthetics. Sound indeed, is its decision to allow the conventional onebodied sink to be yoked into two. Hatria’s His-and-Her washbasins concept, though

It is the visual appetizer to the greater appreciation of the bathroom. We don’t rightly credit it but you have got to admit – the first thing your eyes are drawn to when you enter any bathroom space is the sink. Subconsciously, you size it up, evaluate its goodness, weigh its aesthetics and upon deciding that it is fair, find yourself settling into the space with a certain ease. That said the sink is the benchmark for the aesthetic standard of the bathroom. A shabby sink begets an unsatisfactory bathroom. Truly, you’ll find your bathroom experience distasteful should you have to face a funky sink. Given a polished and poised alternative, you will be waltzing away deeply etched with a pleasant and pleasing impression.

simple, can be a crucial element in keeping the peace between the Mister and his Missus. Just ask Catherine Zeta-Jones and you’ll know why. Tasteful indeed, is its play on geometry. Combining its concentric bodies with angular bases, it pops with eccentricity whilst remaining completely ergonomic. We celebrate Olympia’s Lavabi Basic collection for its simplicity and sincerity. 04

Whether circular or rectangular, its basic form does not detract from either elegance or class. In fact, its unassuming dynamics in clean lines punctuates the bathroom with chic casualness and evokes a mood of easy comfort within the space. Beckoning with earnest aesthetics, it is a pleasure to view and a delight to consume.

*mixers__ Oddly enough, whilst we don’t seem to consciously pay attention to the sinks, we at least notice the mixers. And yes, we actually do gush at them. Though small, the design role of a mixer does carry significant weight. Like jewellery, they ornament the space. They are the accentuations that will lend your bathroom that extra aesthetic oomph. Whether seated atop the washbasin, your bath tub or wall mounted in your shower, such is their aesthetic value. This, of course, we came to fully appreciate with the introduction of Axor’s latest collection, Axor Starck Organic. Developed over a period of three years in intensive collaboration between Axor, the designer brand of Hansgrohe and Philippe Starck, the collection is all about an organic harmony of head and heart, science and beauty. Sleek and minimalistic, its entire make-up marries one-of-a-kind aesthetics with responsible water consumption. Of the unique design, Philippe Starck explains that what drove him from the beginning of the project was a new intuition.

“To me, the essence of our work consists of allowing people to experience the fascination of water in its best way,” says Philippe Grohe, Head of the designer brand Axor, “and to provide innovative solutions of the highest aesthetic and technological levels.”

A harmony of head and heart, here are five simple reasons why Axor Starck Organic works and is worthwhile. * Unique organic-minimalist design. * Pioneering low water flow rate of 3.5 litres per minute with no compromise on functionality. * New spray type brings a whole new water sensation to the wash basin. * Intuitive, ergonomic and economical, it comes with separate controls for water volume and temperature. * The entire range goes through an innovative and sustainable manufacturing process.

*design accents__

Then there are the design accents. Oh how they create mood, ambience and all that wondrous feeling of being in the bathroom! Key to this is the combination of materiality across their varied textures. We bring you four of our favourite designs to give you a little inspiration boost.

POISED & POLISHED A simple put together of wood and marble by HB Design, this bathroom is all about the good life. Whilst its spread of flooring in light timber warmly invites you in, its wall of grey marble embraces you in luxury. Blessed with an abundance of space, the bath experience is further enriched with its large glossy vanity unit in white and a lavish tub. Be pampered as you lounge in the tub in the quiet of a hot summer afternoon with a splendid view of the garden before you.

GLITZING ZEN Its modern day glam meets Zen-inspiration in this lavish bathroom by Edgeline Planners. Staple to its aesthetics are sticks and stone. Ok, not really. Jokes aside, its walls are a visual feast of marble tiles in three different grains and colour gradation. Paired with mirrors framed in naked light bulbs, the bathroom comes alive with that 80’s Hollywood glitz and glam. A Rain shower provides extravagant complements and showers the bathroom experience in luxury. Grounding the glamorous aesthetics with a touch of Zen, is a vanity in sturdy wood. The His & Her stone wash basins serve as the perfect accentuations to tie in the wood with its marble counterparts.

CHIC DEFINITION It’s casual but chic, elegant yet cosy. Clean lines keep the simplicity of the bathroom aesthetics whilst the uncomplicated palette of dark brown and white lends dramatic contrast. The blending of wood on tile gives it chic elegance whilst pristine bathroom furnishings imbue the space with tasteful functionality. Conjured by world-renown interior designer, Kelly Hoppen for her classic Georgian townhouse, this bathroom speaks of simple pleasures and familiar delights.

VINTAGE ESCAPE There’s much to covet in the classically oriental and nostalgically vintage nuances in this bathroom. Designed by Blupin ID, the pairing of tile and wood accents whilst simple lacks not in ergonomic beauty and aesthetic complexity. Evoking the old-school spirit, small square tiles work hand in hand with a dainty wooden wash basin stand. Conjuring modern appeal, matte grey floor tiles flow in harmony with an unassuming glass panel and angular freestanding wash basin. Quaint with its touch of Asian retro, we love this space for its cosy privacy and quiet flash back into times of past.

THE

KITCH KITCHEN

IN

A Home Edition brought to you by BELLE CHUNG & CHANEL MORGAN.

If a hot bath soothes the soul, then a bowl of hot soup comforts the heart. Gastronomically, there is refuge in its warmth and strength in its familiarity for the weary consumer. Oddly, there is gratification in its making and blessing in its giving for the sincere chef. Unwittingly, there is purpose in its fellowship as two or more come together over its tasty morsels. An experience that begins in that space called Kitchen for consumer and chef alike; we see why it is often referred to as the heart of the home.

As we chew on the soulful potential and belly-filling significance of the kitchen, it dawned on us that there is perhaps no greater injustice than to neglect its aesthetics in the namesake of practicality. Yes, it is a sin, indeed, to confuse ergonomics with bland simplicity, to forego aesthetics for utility. A place of refuge, gratification and purpose, the kitchen must be a well-balanced palette of form and function.

innovations. Each model within the range touts Carcass and Space Systems that are exclusive to Schiffini. Where its Carcass system is concerned, Schiffini kitchen models come in a tasteful blend of top-notch materiality known as AlSystems. Schiffini’s Cinquetterre model is a bold example and the first of its kind within the kitchen furnishing industry. Made entirely of natural extruded aluminium plates and tempered glass with no chipboard and by-products of wood, its Alsystem Carcass is completely resistant to humidity. You will be delighted to find that despite exposure to natural elements over long periods of time, the cabinetry will remain unchanged. Neither will it warp with time. Where its interiors are concerned, Schiffini’s kitchen models are all about embracing the spirit of simplicity and convenience. Spotting their very own SpaceSystem, each drawer and cupboard go wide and deep, and is fully extractable. Based on a maximum horizontal width concept as opposed to vertical spacing as in tradition kitchen systems, the Schiffini models effectively minimize any storage hassles. Fitted with hard-wearing triple extraction metal runners, all SpaceSystem drawers are able to muscle a full extraction even when it is on a maximum load of 80kg. Guided by an exclusive mechanism developed by Schiffini Research & Development Centre, these deep kitchen drawers are assured of perfect parallel openings and closings at all times. With such clever engineering incorporated into their elegant designs, you won’t ever find yourself awkwardly stooping over your cabinets, frustratingly rummaging through your kitchen wares or wrestling with weak lopsided drawers. Of brawn and brains, the new Schiffini Kitchen is truly a reflection of precision craftsmanship and exceptional resistance. The trendiest kitchen colours of the season are short-lived, so it’s important to design with you in mind. The good news; the eclectic trend is about your style; your personality. A kitchen of confidence is a must if you’re a contessa of cuisine so creating a bright space is key. Achieve this by experimenting with decorative elements; try using coloured-glass splashbacks, patterned tiles or wallpaper. We’re also seeing accented décor, vases and artwork make their way from living room to kitchen, so spruce things up with punchy pops of colour to keep your kitchen flavourful, fresh and fabulous; just remember to use bright hues astutely, perhaps paring it with softer tones or subtle design elements to keep the look easy on the eyes. Made in the Grand Rapids, Michigan, USA from recycled woods and non-toxic inks, their eco-friendly collections offer environmentally conscious consumers with sustainable, gorgeous and pragmatic purchasing choices. Founders Andy Cruz and Rich Roat have been pushing the innovate boundaries of production processes since the company began in 1993. With their almost obsessive attention to detail, instinctive work environment and utter devotion to each composition, they have by far outdone themselves with other new releases such as The Counting Koi, Kokeshi Blocks, Love Heart Blocks, and The House Factory to name but a few. “These new collections underline the effectiveness of our design partnership with House Industries” says Uncle Goose owner Pete Bultman and indeed, the partnership has been a huge success. Unitedly, they’ve put together an enthralling ensemble of

capriciously-patterned works of art, custom-drawn and executed to perfection – each and every product serves as testimony to phenomenal caricatured mastery and artistic skill, manifested by unprecedented creative talent. That’s probably why you’ve never seen wooden blocks look this good - until now.
