MANIFESTO

Our manifesto is a homage to the garden of earthly delights. We envisioned the superblock district in Barcelona as an experimental site for a future model of bringing industry into the city. By introducing bees into Barcelona, we promote a healthy collaborative production chain between bees and greenery and reshape a symbi otic relationship between humans, technology, and nature.

PLAN

In this overall plan, we cut open the chamfer of the superblock, that our mechanized installation grows from outside of the superblock to the inner courtyard. The walkable platform and ramps build around our structures provides a public space. Our designed intervention of bee production can attract both residents and tourist, to come inside the superblock, and spend time there.

ON BUILDING FACADE

Plant is essential for bees’ survival. We decided to grow plants on façade, as shown in the isometric drawing, to provide food for bees, and create a greener balcony for all residents.

The residents could purchase seeds of plants from the mobile Gashapon machine, and then, the delivery bot will fetch them to the seed incubator. The seeds incubator is installed around the walkways and ramps, to allow people observe the process from seeds to sprouts, which could be educational.

Ideally, water comes from the fountain unit which is extracted underground water. To enhance the resilience of our system, we developed a relatively low-tech unit to collect and filter rainwater, in case if the fountain unit has failed. The organic waste produced in this process will be collected and processed to become an organic fertilizer for the plants.

SIMULATION PROCESS

Located at the intersection of Lonsdale and Spring Streets and adjacent Parliament Garden, the site is at the conjunction of the rigid urban fabric and organic natural form. Our design aims to create a mixed-use high-rise building with modern aesthetic and technical integration, responding to the incresible natural view of the Parliament Garden. For aesthetic of symmery, the tower is champhered at four corners, creating a visual illusion that as if it is twisting.

URBAN VERTICAL FOREST

A Vertical Farm Prototype in Fitzroy, Melbourne 2021 | In Collaboration with Mingxun MA

Traditionally food growing is an inseparable part of human daily activity. Since industrialization began to monopolize food production, and not forgetting to mention the fast speed of urbanization, food growing is set apart from the urban environment. Through creating a parasitic and metabolic system of vertical ecological forest, the project aims to seek the possibility of merging the food growing system with urban context, while revitalizing the neighbourhood with a new pos sibility of public common space.

The goal of the ecological forest is the coexistence of different types of food including wheat, chicken, and vegetables that can be beneficial and supplemental to growing chicken and wheat. This helps with increasing biodiversity of this system. The aim is to create an enclosed loop, even self-sustained system in this eco forest.

DESIGN CONCEPT

The Vertical Ecological Forest is a developable and adaptable system to accommodate the future change in food requirements. They are a set of standardised, prefabricated structures, which can be duplicated. The en tire design will slowly develop in the city based on the pre-designed “ECO Urban Point” modular system in a cycle of 5-10 years.

This development model can provide services to different communities and can operate as a benefic ‘parasite’ in the area. Use and obtain raw materials from other food production projects in Fitzroy to generate new benefits. After analysing the new site, the system generates a new parasitic frame based on the required functions. This model, although designed for Fitzroy, could be deployed anywhere in the world

EGG TOWER

Weather Detector

The top of the egg tower is to detect wheater of the day. If it is not rainy, chicken can get out from the chicken capsule and run around.

Water Tank and Feed Mill

Feed is composed by wheat grain, spinach and watercress, which all of them are from the system itself.

Chicken Capsule

All the chicken live in the chicken capsule, composed by waffle structure to be assembled on site, and inflatable membrane facade.

Incubator HubConnection to the housesAccess

People can access to the tower by circualtion core in centre, or by the highline. It allows self pick-up of the eggs.

The lower part of the egg tower is connected to the houses, to make use of kitchen waste to feed chicken.

Incubators of eggs are located near ground level to allow people to observe the process of hatery.

WHEAT GRASS AND RECYCLE TOWER

In recent years, environmental problems such as global warming and urban garbage have attracted public attention.

The recycled clock can be used as an environmental protection landmark in the area to show the working logic and status of the system to the community through the clock and multimedia screen.

The system uses the latest replaceable filtration and sterilization system, through nano level layer by layer filtration and distillation sterilization, so that the recovered wastewater can be quantitatively divided into solid fertilizer and potable purified water

The distillation system at the bottom speeds up the distillation through multistage distillation tanks and a cooling system with recyclable cold air, so as to meet the needs of the whole community.

The exposed gear adheres to the idea of "building tell the truth", shows the structure to the community, and enables people to gain a sense of participation by making the community understand the logic of system operation

The MANIFESTO

Composed by a series of interlocking units, this artists’ community is designed for creating quality private living together with a vivid community social environment. Through the internal separation of living and working of each unit, a multifunctional and transformable interior space was achieved. With the structural characteristics brought from the interior composition, units can interlock with each other and there fore forms the clusters. The variation of these clusters and their assembly create opportunities for different scales of communal space and also form an interrelationship between the households as the roof of your neighbour maybe it’s your garden.

The dynamic structural and spatial orientation of this community aims to provide the inspiration for creativity and constructs a vibrant commu nity where people share their lives together.
