S

tefan Clarke cannot be defined by simply saying he is a sculptor, he cannot be boxed in by calling him an artist and his work does not begin with the photos showcased in this magazine. But we nonetheless had to attempt to capture the magic of this ‘being’ and his creativity. He powerfully inspires anyone with a whim of artistic abilities to step out and be bold, be creative, and get it done. On the contrary though he may inspire you, he is nonchalant about your praises or even worse your critiques. In his words “I am not a nice person don’t think you will like me and I don’t care”. This I tell you make Stefan Clarke even more intriguing. On a typical day he is a sculpture technician and designs sculptures and art work that can be seen at The University of Technology and Edna Manley School of the Performing Arts both located in Kingston, Jamaica. Notably he is a graduate of the latter. He has been featured at the National Gallery and amongst other exhibitions. His current work is transitioning from sculptures on landscapes to sculptures on the body. He is transforming his work into wearable art. LUNCH AT TEA TREE CREPERIE

If you’re ever in Kingston, Jamaica and you’re looking for a peaceful spot to have some comfort food, The Tea Tree Crêperie is worth a try. Located at Unit 5, 8 Hillcrest Ave, Kingston 6; this Cordon-bleu-style eatery specializes in international and herbal teas, savory and sweet crêpes, cakes, gourmet meat, seafood dishes, coffees and snacks and dips After discovering them at the Kingston Kitchen Food Fair earlier that month, I decided to visit the actual location to experience more. With my faithful foodie Mum and Sister by my side, we gazed at the extensive menu board agonizing over what to try. We decided to have the Proscutto and Asparagus Crêpe with Swiss Cheese, Broccoli and Mushroom Crêpe with Mild Cheddar and Cream Cheese, a Banana Nutella Crêpe for dessert and the famous Frozen Mint Lemonade. (This came up to J$808.51, J$808.51 and J$638.30 + tax respectively, though they prices may have changed a little since then. The food was warm, filling and flavourful. The frozen mint lemonade was really refreshing and the mint gave it a delightful twist! The friendly service, relaxing ambiance and modern décor completed the package. All in all I’d say a place dedicated to crêpes and tea is new for Jamaica, but they've got the right branding and taste factor to make it a success. I will definitely go again!

Alice is a White Pawn, you might expect her to regard the Red Queen as an enemy. But although the Red Queen can be bossy, she actually gives Alice a lot of helpful advice and arranges for Alice to take part in the game.


EYES For the turquoise gradient on the

To recreate that beautiful red heart on the lips, be sure to cover the lips with foundation, use a fine point lipstick brush and a bright red lipstick like this one from Stila to make your shape.

the Mad Hatter is so distinctive that many people recognize him and his preposterous headgear outside the context of the Alice world. As a result, he sometimes appears in popular culture This character is puzzling and enigmatic, and as his name suggests, he appears to be crazy. Certainly his behavior is peculiar, and the Cheshire Cat actually specifically warns Alice that the character is insane. However, in the books, he is never directly referred to as the Mad Hatter, although he is sometimes known as “Hatter.�

Alice first meets the Mad Hatter at a peculiar tea party. His vocation is readily identifiable from his large and ornate hat, which still bears a price tag. The Mad Hatter and the March Hare have in fact been having the same tea party for an extended period of time, ever since the Queen of Hearts declared that the Mad Hatter had murdered time by singing especially badly in a public performance. Originally sentenced to death, the Mad Hatter escaped, but decided that time had actually stopped, condemning him to an endless tea party.

To create the colorful eyes of the Mad Hatter you will need a few items. The teal palette from NARS for the lids, Orange pencil from NARS for the brow, a fucshia MAC pigment for bottom lid and neon yellow lashes.

LIPS

To pop the lips try the “Girl About Town” lipstick from MAC

E

very season has its own signature tradition. The spring/ summer season is upon us so it is time to bid farewell to predominantly dark, monochrome wardrobes and say hello to the charming brighter side of life. Typical of this season is lightweight materials, pastels and bolder colours, reminiscent of new flower blossoms. Like the advent of spring/summer, comes a fresh collection from a budding designer, JohnPaul Pierre.

February 2010 saw the emergence of a new face in the world of Fashion. Jamaican-born Jermaine Watson launched his debut collection for Fall 2010, a part of his JohnPaul Pierre line. The New York based designer unveiled the fall collection of which he described as “James Bond” themed, telling a story of what the character would wear from day to night. KareeKuorum January 2013

Banal would be the last thing that comes to mind when attempting to wrap your fingers around these designs. He creates eye-catching statement pieces that are highly sophisticated and essentially feminine. Spring/Summer 2011 sees the designer broadening his scope with the “BOLD IN AFRICA” collection. As the name suggests the pieces are chiefly afro-centric with a modern twist. Elaborate patterns resembling those of African natives blended with bright colours to complement are used by the designer. He also plays around with bandage and chiffon to hug curves while adding a sleek flow-like element. As the name suggests this collection is for the woman who is not afraid to stand out in a crowd or make a statement, a bold one at that. Q. Why the name John Paul Pierre? A. I chose the name JohnPaul Pierre because I thought what better name to call my brand than the one I was given at birth. Q. Did you receive formal education for your craft?

A. No I didn't, my craft is more of a gift but I plan on going to school to perfect it. Q. Which other designers do you think is most influential to your work? A. I would say "Alexanda McQueen and Marc Jacobs.". Q. What is your ultimate goal as a fashion designer? A. Is for my brand to be know world wide. I wanna be walking in "time square" and see the women around wearing JohnPaul Pierre. Q. What would you consider to be your biggest challenge thus far as a Jamaican designer overseas in the fashion industry? A. I think my biggest challenge right now is funding. Sometime you have cut back on what you really want to do due to low funding, however slowly but surely I'm getting over that challenge so you know soon there's no stoping JohnPaul Pierre Q. If you could choose any renowned “fashionista� to wear an item from your S/S collection who would it be and why? A. This is a hard one lol.....but I would have to say Rihanna because she's a risk taker and for me she like making a statement and If your going to wear JohnPaul Pierre you want to make a statement weather through the fit of the garments or through the bold colors. Q. John Paul Pierre should be launching a T-Shirt line, what can we expect from this new venture? A.You can expect, what I like to call "Amazingness" it was just to be a T-shirt line but it turn into a men's collection, which I've been working really hard on and I can't wait to share it with the world.

Q. When did you first realize you had the talent to design? A. Growing up, I was the little girl who would cut up pieces of scrap fabric or perfectly designed Barbie apparel to handsew and create new outfits. I was also pretty adept at drawing different little ensembles with accessories to match. However it wasn’t until my time at Edna Manley where I decided to go the Textile Design (Fashion Design was not yet offered as a course) route, as it was the closest I could get to Fashion. Q. What inspired the name Vain Glory? A. The word vainglory is actually something I stumbled upon while doing my final year thesis. It means “inordinate pride in oneself or one’s achievements; excessive vanity.” Everyone knows the reputation Jamaicans have worldwide as being pride-filled, conceited and always striving to be the best. That is the kind of energy that inspired the name of my brand, as whether we want to admit it or not, we all have a little vain glorious nature in us. Q. What design are you most proud of to date? A. I’m proud of everything I put out there but I think my Final Year Show work for sure. The process was so rigorous, time-consuming and the concept so well thought out, that it’s hard to separate or single out one piece, because they’re all my babies! . Q. What has been your biggest challenge? A. Consistency. I’m my biggest critic, and I’m constantly trying to compete with myself. I don’t want to rush things with my brand by pushing out mediocre work, I want everything to just fall into place and be up to par or better than my previous work.

Q. How have overcome such challenge? A. I’m still trying to! I think just understanding that I’m running in my own race and not trying to compete or keep up with anyone. I try to push out positivity into the universe; a mindset like this keeps me focused and unbothered by what others are doing. Q. What is your personal style? A. I think my style is all about balance. I like mixing something sexy with an androgynous look, or something risqué with something glamorous and classy. I also love balancing trends with a vintage piece to create even more dimension. I’m a free-spirited kind of girl, so whichever way the wind blows me that day, is the style I’m going with. Q. What do you think separates you from other designers? A. My work is a clash of visual art and fashion. I personally design, handprint and dye my own fabric, which I suppose is my little secret weapon that other designers locally may not be privy to. Q. What is next for Vain Glory? A. I don’t like to speak about the future in fear of jinxing it, but Caribbean Fashion Week 2013 is definitely in the books, Dirty Crayons a local exhibition amongst a few other tricks I have up my sleeve.

November 2012 introduced Ishawna to the possibilities of becoming The Princess of Dancehall when she went on a UK tour with Lady Saw. This statement may cause disruptions here and there but while others aim to feud with her majesty The Queen of Dancehall - Lady Saw, Ishawna seeks to learn, be encourage, and develop the characteristics of royalty in a very rough and tough industry under the guidance of the queen.

“Being on tour with Lady Saw has taught me a lot. She shared with me the business side of the business just how she conducts herself she doesn’t play or joke around. Its business, she handles herself like a “real big man”. You can see why she is where she is. She deals with her thing like a Bounty Killer, a Beenie Man, a Buju. She gave me great advice and I learned a lot from her and she just made me want to go extra hard.” A diva she can be, but when asked about The Princess of Dancehall title she shy’s away with a humbled remark. “Well with me I am just Ishawna, I am bringing Ishawna to the forefront. I am a singer and I singjay and I do different genres you can hear it through my music.”

Her music is undoubtedly reaching a fan base of over 19,000 on Facebook and 10,000 on Twitter but it does not stop there it keeps growing. She is not recognized as The Princess of Dancehall but undoubtedly there are a few head nods in agreement of her being the Real Hot Gyal of Dancehall. People are recognizing her sense of style, her continuous growth as an entertainer, and a complimentary image that she ensures to deliver. She was nominated in 2012 as Best Dress Female Artiste for a local newspaper.

“I mean it’s a great feeling to show that people appreciate how I dress. It is flattering. It is not like I go out there to get best dress. People are actually appreciating me for who I am and I find it flattering. Of course big up everybody who voted for me for that. It is a good feeling, people are appreciating your style and they put you in that category. Just being in that category alone is a great feeling even if I do not win.” Such a nomination is not given easily to anyone in this industry so for Ishawna to get such a nomination we can just imagine the preparation that goes into her daily wardrobe. “On a good day it takes me about an hour to get dress. Like I would pick out my outfit, then I’ll take a shower, you know the usual stuff, then my make-up will probably take like fifteen minutes depending on the type of make-up. I do my own make-up. Sometimes I like to add a bit of style to it depending on the event that I’m going. So the max will be an hour that’s on a good day. On a bad day that is when like nothing is going right. I pick out an outfit and I’m not feeling the outfit, I get ready I have to change all ten time. Did my make-up I have to do it over to match the next outfit. Those time I get cursed out a lot because if it is a situation where I am going places with other people they get frustrated. But on a usual good day it takes me an hour to get dress.” One of those people to get frustrated we can imagine is her beau, Foota Hype, who is a producer, disc jock, and also her manager. They have a handsome son and unlike some “dancehall mommies” Ishawna does not flaunt photos of her son on social media. Ishawna and Foota have been dating for quite a while, a few years actually but they still manage to keep the relationship strong despite the negativity that surrounds them. “Beauty and the Beast” a rumored title for their relationship is just a taste of how mean this industry can be.

“I mean everybody knows that I am attractive and we are in the public eye so we are gonna get little stuff like that. So I mean it is not like Foota is thinking he is Brad Pitt or wants to be Brad Pitt you know, so what. He has the beauty and a lot of them can’t say that. And like Foota is one of my biggest fans and he is like so supportive and none of those stuff bothers him. It is a good feeling when something is your passion and your partner is so supportive.” Even so, she will get other attacks by on lookers. She does collaborations with her male peers in the industry and some “flag” her for it, only assuming the worse. She did a song with Specialist called “Do for Love” it has recently went number one on the local television video charts. This has propelled Ishawna’s career to another level and encourages her growth in the industry. “It is a great feeling. I wasn’t even signed to DownSound. Joe (CEO of DownSound Records) didn’t even know the song was recorded until it was after when it was finish recorded and finish mixing and it went viral he said we have to do a video. It wasn’t a Photography by: Phillip Rhoden song that was promoted it went out by itself people kept calling and requesting it, everybody on the radio was playing it. It is a really great song. Everything just happened so fast. It was like the most talk about song and it has been a really great feeling and it motivates us to do more”. 2013 has just arrived and like most entertainers they are pumped and ready for what the New Year has to bring. Most are going extra harder than year 2012, destined to put a stamp in the industry and exceed the dominated forces like Tommy Lee Sparta, Bounty Killer, Busy Signal, Konshens, Popcaan, Lady Saw, and even Vybz Kartel despite his incarceration. Not to mention, Chronixx, who is a definite force to watch out for this year. You would think that these forces amongst others I did not mention would dampen The Real Hot Gyal spirit but it sure did not. Spoken like a true hard working, dedicated, and confident woman, Ishawna is determined to place a dominant mark in this music industry. KareeKuorum January 2013


“I have a song out now called “Murderer” and it has been out for like a month now. It is getting played on the radio and it is on the internet. We did not do a lot of promotion for it over the holidays due to Sting and we didn’t want to kill the song during the Sting season. We are shooting the video for it in this month, January. Every girl loves it I have a Buju sample in it as well and that gets a lot of attention. I also have another single coming out it is a dancehall single called “Tene Tiny”. I have a song with Lady Saw I won’t even say anything about that until it drops in January. Look out for a lot of singles from me. I have a lot in store. I have been doing a lot of work with Elephant Man and Busy Signal which will be released later on in the year. I am not going to put out everything all at once. I am also focusing on putting out tracks by myself. The year 2013 is my year.” Having the opportunity to catch up with Ishawna was very interesting. I must say she has been trying her hardest to be recognized by her peers but most importantly her fans. The work does not stop at her first number one hit single with Specialist or her tour with Lady Saw. It keeps growing. I think it is encouraging to see females in the music industry continue to work even harder despite the pitfalls they face. Ishawna is a definitely one to watch this year 2013 amongst other hard working females. She is not the princess but she has the potential to be like most females. Of course the work never stops at a title, but it is surely an encouragement. One would say the sky is the limit, but I say there is no limit. Work hard, play hard, and strive for excellence. Your Life is a Gift!
