The theme of this year’s Summer Reading Challenge is ‘Mythical Maze’, where local youngsters can spend a monster summer holiday lost in a labyrinth of fantastical creatures from the world of legend and mythology. Children who sign up to the reading challenge will navigate their way through the Mythical Maze by borrowing and reading six books of their choice from their local library. Along the way they will be met by fun versions of folklore’s most famous faces, from mermaids and minotaurs to yetis and unicorns – and everything in between!

step into the Mythical Maze To celebrate the first Summer Reading Challenge at the all-new Bridgend Library, we invited pupils from Oldcastle Primary to help us kick off the challenge in style. The children joined us for a special parade from the old Bridgend Library to its new home at Bridgend Recreation Centre, where the school’s choir treated us to a special performance. The children then enjoyed a story and made their first steps into the Mythical Maze. The Summer Reading Challenge is free for all children in Bridgend County Borough. If you want to follow the pupils from Oldcastle Primary into the Mythical Maze, sign up at your local library.

Coming soon Back to School

With such a wide range of exciting events and activities on offer during the holidays, there’s no better place to spend your summer than at your local library. But don’t forget to pay us a visit when you’re back at school too! Whether you’re researching for an essay, want somewhere to do your homework, or just fancy relaxing with a good book, all of our libraries are packed with resources and friendly staff to help you on your way. And it’s all FREE!

1914 - 18 Glamorgan Gazette index Staff and volunteers at the Local and Family History Centre at Ty’r Ardd have been hard at work indexing historic editions of the Glamorgan Gazette. In September 2014, we will be releasing the 1914 – 1918 index to mark the centenary of the beginning of the First World War.

For more information call the centre on 01656 754810 or email localandfamilyhistory@bridgend.gov.uk.

Halloween hijinks We love Halloween, and we’ve got a series of spine-tingling storytime and craft sessions planned for our libraries once again this year. We’ve also an extra special fun-dead treat in store for teenage fans of ‘The Walking Dead’, with a goresome zombie themed event inspired by the hit TV series taking a bite out of Pyle Life Centre.

Pant-oh yes it is! In 2012 we brought you Peter Pantomime and last year saw the Grinch steal his way into Bridgend Library. The Bridgend Library and Information Service panto is making a triumphant return once again this Christmas. We’re currently planning a cracker of a storytime performance, so keep your eyes peeled for more details.
