Back by Popular Demand: Ukeleles and More: Teaching Upper Elementary General Music Lessons and activities for upper elementary general music classes, including information on teaching ukulele.

Cathy Fox currently teaches elementary general music in the Grand Ledge Public Schools. She taught music in Ohio, New York and Connecticut before moving to Michigan in 2003. Cathy has Music Education degrees from Oberlin College and Northwestern University. November 9, 2014

Creative Play: Re-examining Our Notions of Classroom Improvisation

Improvisational experiences promote students’ musical creativity, growth, and independence. This session will explore a variety of k-5 improvising activities using classroom instruments and voice. Whether your students improvise daily or not at all, this interactive session will teacher creative activities that will broaden their musical horizons.

Shannan Hibbard is a fourth-year Ph.D. student at the University Michigan. She teaches P-8 general music at Four Corners Montessori Academy in Madison Heights, MI and is an adjunct instructor at Eastern Michigan University. Prior to pursuing her doctorate, she taught general music in Detroit for ten years. She has presented her research this year at the New Directions in Music Education Conference in East Lansing, NAfME research conference in St. Louis, and International Society for Music Education in Porto Alegre, Brazil.

Ubuntu! Harambee! African songs, drumming, and dances for your classroom. African music is joyful, infectious, and embodies the “it takes a village” spirit alive and well on the African continent. In this workshop, participants will learn and explore traditional songs of South Africa and Kenya, and how they can be incorporated into a general music classroom.

Josh Palkki is a Ph.D student in music education (choral conducting cognate) at Michigan State University, and previously served as director of middle school choral and handbell ensembles at Norwood School in Bethesda, Maryland. In summer 2012, he traveled to Kenya where he taught at Red Rose School in Kibera (Nairobi), one of Africa’s largest slums. Josh earned a master’s degree in choral conducting at Northern Arizona University, where he conducted the Harter Memorial Handbell Choir and NAU Men’s Chorale and toured South Africa with NAU’s Shrine of the Ages Choir. Palkki earned an undergraduate degree in vocal/general music education at Ball State University in 2004. From 2005-2009 he served as choral director at Hoover Middle School and Lincoln High School, two inner-city performing arts schools in San José, California.
