4 Reflection Teaching and Facilitation of Student Learning Innovations: Starting in W14, every course I teach now carries the “CE” endorsement in SIS. Coursework, discussions, and courseval comments indicate that community engagement activities may have increased achievement, motivation, and engagement with difficult or controversial concepts related to schools, teaching, and learning. I also received funding to update the instruments I use when I teach. I’ve ordered and received these materials and look forward to integrating them in my instruction. Course Development: •
W14: I designed a new course, MUS 380 Principles of Music Education (2cr).
•
I applied for and was granted the f general education designation for MUS 185.
•
I rewrote catalog descriptions for MUS 380, MUS 381, and MUS 180 Program Development: I collaborated with colleagues to create a plan for the Department of
Music’s adoption of the Redesign of Secondary Education Programs, wrote a rationale for our plan, created sample schedules, wrote new catalog language, and wrote and submitted the program change forms. Changes to our program were approved at the 5/14 CAS meeting. Advising: In F13, I had 15 assigned advisees, and in W14, I had 13 assigned advisees. I meet with each for 30 minutes each semester. I also created advising materials for Music Education majors and communicated with Music Education majors regarding advising topics via email. Assessment: I coordinated data collection for Music Education key assessments. I compiled and analyzed key assessment data from 2012/13 for the Ed Unit Assessment retreat. I also administered key assessments in EDE/S 360 & 469 and MUS 380 & 381, and assessed gen ed outcomes in MUS 180. Civic Engagement:
4
•
MUS 185 (F13): 8-week practicum with two preschool classes at the UM-Flint ECDC.
•
MUS 180 (F13): each student observed two music teachers in area elementary schools.
5 •
K. Salvador 2013-14 CAS Annual Faculty Evaluation MUS 380 (W14): four observations, various ages/musics, in community and school settings.
•
MUS 381 (W14): 1 hr/week for 8 weeks: observe, participate, teach in elementary music. Plans and goals for continuous improvement in my teaching include:
•
Designing a new course for F14: MUS 585, Music and the Young Child.
•
Developing an application to the Boyer Faculty Scholars Program for 2015-16.
•
Strengthening CE courses. Specifically, how can these partnerships be more reciprocal?
•
Continuing work on redesign implementation.
•
Exploring instructional technology. What apps and gadgets are music teachers using? How can I integrate them into my instruction as a model for my students?
Professional Development and Creative Work Work Completed/Published in 2013-14: I have two papers under review, and I expect page proofs soon for a forthcoming paper and a book chapter. See table above for titles and publication information. Research in Progress: •
Music Teacher Educator Perspectives on Social Justice (working title). National survey. In collaboration with Dr. Jacki Kelly McHale at DePaul University.
•
Preschool Music Instruction: Instructor-Led Practicum and Single-Instructor Models (working title). This qualitative action research project seeks to describe musical and social behaviors in groups of preschool students with regard to classroom management and musical responses.
Later this summer, I will begin examining practices and perspectives of former band directors who now teach elementary music. Project accepted for presentation at 2015 Michigan Music Conference. Professional Development: I attended the Symposium on Music Teacher Education, Michigan Music Conference, and NAfME Music Research and Teacher Education National Conference. I presented, served on panels, presided, and facilitated work group sessions [see table above for details].
6 I participated in a UM-Flint Teaching Circle on social justice in teacher education. We are trying to address institutional structures that perpetuate inequality. With this group, I collaborated in the design and presentation of two of workshops [see above table for dates/titles]. I plan to continue to focus on social justice in my research, service, and community engagement. This summer, I am participating in a book study on our common read, Fire in the Ashes. Our teaching circle will continue to meet, and have planned further collaborations around research, workshops, and presentations. Professional and University Service At UM Flint, I serve my department by coordinating the teacher’s certification program, administering scholarships, coordinating and evaluating piano proficiency examinations, hearing auditions, evaluating voice juries, and evaluating recitals. For the Education Unit, I served on the Secondary Redesign Phase I Implementation Team. I also attended a variety of campus life events and initiatives [please see tables above for details]. In the community: •
I serve as the Faculty Advisor of our Collegiate chapter of the National Association for Music Education (NAfME). This year, we set up community partnerships, teaching music for ten weeks, first at Whaley Children’s Center and then at Durant Tuuri-Mott Elementary School. We were one of three chapters recognized as a NAfME Chapter of Excellence for Service. http://www.mlive.com/news/flint/index.ssf/2014/05/university_of_michigan-flint_m_6.html
