Project Description: Everyone must make mistakes during their life. I remember I had an unforgettable experience in the course SD2004, I had made many mistakes in my homework, though I always tried to correct them. But I learnt useful knowledge from that course. Actually I have a deep impression on those “mistakes”, thus when I needed to decide my topic of the poster. I decided to use “learn from mistakes” as my topic, as I believe that if you don't make mistakes, you don't make anything.

Law Hiu Tung, Karen (09177064D) Group F Before I attended the course, I did not know posters very much. What I know about posters is only the general knowledge - posters are used for advertising and they contain graphics and text to present the ideas or the feelings of the designers. The first part of the project was doing a research on posters. This research let me realize that I need to have a deeper understanding on posters. In my part of the research, I misunderstood some of meanings of the posters. And some of the photos were not posters at all, they were just some photos of a campaign. As a result, I tried to find some reference books of posters to enhance my knowledge on posters. When it was time to choose topic of my posters, there were two main topics that I wanted to choose. One is energy saving and conservation, and the other one is “learn from mistakes”. I did some research on energy saving. If I used energy saving as my topic, I thought I would use some energy facts to make the posters more persuasive. However, I admit that energy saving is a boring topic when compared with “mistakes”, but it is easier to handle. Anyway, I chose “learn from mistakes” as the topic of my posters because I think it would be an interesting topic and a challenging one. Maybe I did not think deeply of what I wanted to say of the topic, I started to have different kinds of problems, like the composition of the poster was too complicated, the message was not well presented visually and the graphics did not match the meaning of the slogan. If I did another topic, I might have the same problems. But since my topic was not yet concrete, the problem was even worse. As a result, I spent a lot of time on trying different compositions. Finally, in those layouts and thumbnails, I think that the “pixel-like” graphic seems to be the best one, so I decide to use this idea to make a series of posters.
In fact, the production process of my posters was simpler than others, at least I did not need to have draw many drawings, or to use difficult computer techniques. But I still spent much time on making the posters. I thought the main problems were that the graphics did not match the slogan or the message of the posters was ambiguous. When I asked my friends about my posters, they knew what the posters were talking about because of the slogan. They understand the graphics, but they did not know how the graphics work with the slogan. I believe it is because of lacking experience on graphic posters. Though my posters are not as beautiful as others, and my computer techniques are not well developed, I made the first series of posters. I don’t know if I learn a lot from the course, at least I know how the production process of a poster should be like. By the way, I need to find some reference book on graphic design for further studies, as I need to study animation in the next semester. Graphic design books can enhance my graphic sense. Also, I understand myself more because of the course. I find that sometimes my thoughts were too complicated, maybe I have to try not to make things too complicated. It’s for my own good.
