U N D E R S T A N D I N G T H E T R I L O G Y : There is an interconnectedness among each of the themes, with a progression in the storyline from water to land to air. The 2012 Collection, The Waters – Seas of Consciousness, walked the reader through the psychological journey of man, with each waterway (whether gulfs, rivers or seas) moving man into a greater consciousness of “self”. The 2013 Collection, The Human Race , took the reader around the horse racing circuit – with the circuit representing Life’s unrelenting ups and downs with the jockey steering it’s horse to the finish line amidst the banter of a discouraging crowd. Ultimately the 2014 Collection, Vie – The Rise of the Sanctuary, pulls the themes from the past two years together, through the use of one word “Life” (La Vie – French meaning for Life). There is a sort of harmony in depiction of “Birds”. On one hand, the imagery of birds in flight represents “man’s limitlessness”- No one dictating who he/she is; no one determining what he/she can become. Similarly, each bird depicts a virtue - man aspiring towards moral excellence and individual greatness. Overall there is a very positive energy in this collection, ranging from the fluidity of the fabric to uplifting portrayal of birds in the sanctuary. The three year storyboard suggests that “La Vie - Life” is a psychological and emotional journey. Nonetheless, you, and ONLY you, hold the key to your future. The sky is the limit! Love Birds are symbol of love and they portray a strong bond between couples or lovers. In fact their name itself is suggestive of the true love, warmth and affection that individuals share. T H E M A C A W - Macaws are highly intelligent and hence, symbolize an ability for higher thinking and intellectual individuals. It is also symbolic of resourcefulness of the individual and represents a well-adapted and adjusted individual. It is also believed that Macaw energies can aid us by helping us to heighten our perceptions, our intuition, our understanding of our inner voice. THE LAYERS Why wear only one lovely piece when you can wear three? Layering is a great way to combine your favorite pieces. Essentially a layer is any item that can be worn on its own and look great. It is like peeling away the skin of a sugar apple. The outside of the sugar apple is eye catching but rough, while the inside is grainy but juicy. It is the same thing with layers in this season’s collection. The outside is textured and rugged while the inside has all the details. Our challenge this season was to express the notion of being free-spirited. This meant creating a unique closet that straddled the softer side of man yet expresses his hardcore nature. The palette is very clean with white working on white. Like many of the pieces for our men, this piece also contains a layering effect, providing a sort of dichotomy for the ensemble. On one hand the white shirt and white pants invoke a cool breezy vibe, while the feather shoulder and panel have a more fantasy effect. This piece is about the union of two worlds – The Lover vs. The Fighter

Now, don’t be misled! Our relationship isn’t perfect. Sure enough there are days I question my own sensibility about our union. Was it his perfectly-sculptured body or the 6 dozen roses in my cube? The hidden tattoo or the fact that he made my heart beat a rapid tattoo the first moment we met? Nonetheless, I will always love him with a heart-retching kind of passion that I have vowed to reserve for no other in my life.

As she watched the sun sink behind the distance she remained curled up on her wicker chair perched by a window that grew misty with the breath of her life. Life events unfortunately, hadn’t made it easy to stay on course. However, it provided an interesting route, she reflected. Her life wasn’t easy to explain. Then again is anyone’s? It was not as spectacular as she had fancied. However, it was satisfying. She learned to pick up the pieces when things fell apart, built friendships and love another with all her heart and soul. Her life was a journey and she lived!

BARRY DOWDEN
Reserved yet passionate, Quiet and pensive, Detailed-oriented yet quick, A multifaceted & gifted Artist. These are some of the adjectives that we would use to describe our airbrush artist Barry Dowden. “He is very good …”, Ann-Marie said with conviction “… Tell him what sort of effect you are looking for and he will create it” she continued. Standing in front of Kathy was a slim, young, light-skinned man with very long dreadlocks. He was striking, but curiously quiet. Barry smiled and nodded, acknowledging AnnMarie’s introduction. He then moved toward a white mannequin, pulled out his airbrush, and made magic. I wish that I could say it was easy to connect the dots of Barry’s biography, and come up with his trajectory. The truth is, Barry’s oeuvre includes drawing, painting, airbrushing, and screenprinting. And while we isolate the majority of his work to face and body painting, he isn’t a makeup artist by trade. Interestingly, he is really a full fledge artist with a prowess in both graphic and fine art detailing. In hindsight, it is quite remarkable to see him transpose his skills to support make-up artistry. He works on the face as if it were a painting. Similarly, he airbrushes the human body as if he were painting the human form on a canvas or a wooden board. In actuality, his artistic techniques are quite similar to “The Boris Vallejo” – etching the human form as more muscle verses soft edges.
Barry’s personal artwork narrates his past in real time. It’s a sort of spiritual journey (really) which marks pivotal moments and situations in time. Unless, you saw the timeline of his artwork, maybe then and only then, could one connect the dots to disclose the essence of this complex artist.
THE SECRET OF THE WINGS This year, we were excited to work with Barry in another arena. He is the artist behind the airbrushing of the wings. “Tell me how you see them, what colors you’re thinking of and I’ll see them through you,” he said. Then ‘presto-chango’ and with the movement of his ‘magic wand’ (an airbrush really) he made our dream into a reality. In all honesty, Barry helped our birds in our 2014 Collection take flight! In retrospect, I’ve always thought that it was quite remarkable what one could extrapolate from history or in this case artwork. I must admit, after viewing his work, there seems to be so much more to Barry that what meets the eye. He is a thinker, a storyteller. We would even go as far to call him a dream-maker. However, one of the most recent adjectives that we use to describe Mr. Dowden is a committed friend.

When an accessory is described as a statement piece, it means that it has moved away from being a mere add-on to an item that makes you take notice. Arguably anything can be your statement piece – from your handbag to your shoes. It seems that even your hair can be a central point of focus these days. In the Beginning: Cheryl Bowles, Biochemist, Founder and Managing Director, gave up her top executive job at Nestlé, the world’s largest food company. She was the company’s first woman Executive, Chief Chemist, Head of Quality Control, and Head of Research and Development. In addition, Ms. Bowles, cofounded and presided over Nestlé’s Credit Union, and served as Head of Safety and Development , Nestlé, Trinidad and Tobago. Cheryl Bowles gave up a fantastic salary and opportunities to travel all over the world to pursue the development of the brand that would become Cher-Mère. The name Cher-Mère, meaning “Dear Mother” in French was derived from the unity of the first part of Cheryl’s name and part of Merle, her mother’s (deceased) name. The Journey: Cheryl Bowles trusted her instincts, having no previous experience working with herbs, aromatherapy or cosmetics, and decided to chart a new course through an unknown terrain. Determined to make it on her own, she declined Nestlé’s offers to retain her. With vivid memories of her grandmother using the peeled skin of the cucumber on her face for improved complexion; and fresh aloe and the white of an egg to make a facial mask, Ms. Bowles was armed with firsthand knowledge of the Caribbean’s possession of some of nature’s best herbs and botanica for the appearance of youthful, healthy and vivacious looking skin. It is from this arsenal of knowledge and technical expertise that Cher-Mère’s natural product blends have been formed. Cheryl Bowles’s mother Merle Bowles, deceased, was an inspiration to her and suggested the creation of a hair food for Caribbean people. Merle Bowles, an esthetician and hair dresser, used the herbal hair food on her clients. It was well received, and the Hair Food was the first of 30 products currently on the market. Subsequently, the name Cher-Mère was born. “Cher-Mère” is a registered trademark in parts of the Caribbean, USA, UK, and Canada.
The Herbarium Ltd. (THL), the parent company of Cher-Mère, commenced business in one store in the basement of Roundabout Plaza, Barataria, selling its own locally formulated teas and herbs. One of the company’s first employees was Veronica Lewis, who journeyed with Cheryl Bowles as a sales assistant at Roundabout Plaza. Ms. Lewis, now the longest serving employee, now serves as Production Supervisor at The Herbarium Ltd. The Herbarium Ltd., with its extensive product line of 30 products, operates four day spas and a kiosk in Trinidad and one day spa in Barbados. The Cher-Mère Brand is also distributed in Guadeloupe, New York and London. The future: Aba Bowles-Mortley, Cheryl’s daughter, has always been an active part of the company and now continues on the legacy in the position of Assistant General Manager/International Marketing. As a small child, no older than 5 years old, Aba would often accompany her mother to trade shows, explaining to potential clients the benefits of local herbs used in the teas that were sold. As Aba grew older, she has covered every facet of the company from production to distribution, even working as an esthetician in the Day Spas, and has been given the name “the little boss” from inception. Now with a PhD in Materials and Chemical Engineering, Dr. Mortley continues to forge ahead and build on the brand that is Cher-Mère. Fashion is a complete package. It starts with conceptualizing a “look” – how should I comb my hair? How much make-up should I apply? What outfit and shoe should I wear? Our busy, high-tech lives sometimes seems to only favor the big picture and glosses over the intricate. But at K2K the true magic which inspires the imagination can be found in the details – detailing even down to the make-up! Our carnival “looks” would never be complete without our make-up and hairstylist team. Analese Redman (makeup artist), Barry Dowden (airbrush artist) and Helena Berot (hairstylist) are the hidden gems who execute our thematic looks year after year. Through their firm interpretation of color, textures and style, each artist adds that additional “wow factor” to the costumes and that extra “fairy dust” to create that K2K magic. After graduating from the Fashion Institute of Technology with a degree in Fashion Merchandising Management in 2005, Analese returned to Trinidad to juggled a professional career and to carve a name for her self in the make-up artist community. The self taught artist offers a refreshing approach to make-up artistry. She is fervent and very passionate about her art form. There is an expression of sensibility in her work and her detailed oriented brush work helps to bring our Carnival characters to life.
“Makeup is the ultimate art form. It is almost therapeutic for me (calming; soothing), because it's what I love doing. I see the face as a bare canvas, and the opportunity for creativity as being limitless. Makeup artistry is simply, creating wearable art. As much as I am the ultimate perfectionist when it comes to my work, I also know that there is there is also beauty in imperfection. MAKE-UP
The first time we met Analese we wanted to hire her as a model for the K2K brand. She was beautiful, slender and poised. But low and behold, there was a much deeper calling for Ms. Redman. More interested in the creative aspect of the brand, Analese was hired as the core make-up artist and executed some of the most beautiful facial pieces for K2K in the presentation, “The Waters- Seas of Consciousness”. Analese has proven to fearless in pushing the boundaries of what we call make-up aggressively combining textile patterns, animal print and visual imagery on the face. In house we have a little saying that goes, “Don’t just play mas – become the mas!” And with Analese’s unconventional yet contemporary approach to make-up, she aids the Designers in pushing the boundaries of the mas landscape and bringing their cinematic concepts to life. GETTING TO KNOW THE ARTIST: Analese grew up in Arima and studied at St Joseph's Convent, Port-of-Spain, where she focused on modern languages and Art. “I have always been passionate about the arts”, she confessed. “I think that even without knowing it, I possessed a particular affinity for makeup that I didn't fully realize until later on. Many of my childhood friends and family members can attest to coming over to the house to visit when I was a child, and leaving with a full face makeover”. “My mother got it the worst!... “she giggled, “…she was my live in practice doll. But she was always more than happy to indulge me in my creative aspirations. Even her fashion magazines were not safe! Armed with markers and pens, photos of Christy Turlington and Cindy Crawford in my moms latest Elle and Vogue would get a full face makeover - with lashes and lipstick drawn on with my markers”.
“Of course, there is something to be said about having formal training behind your name. Conversely, I also feel that the advantage of not being formally trained is the freedom, openness and the ability to be receptive to explore non-traditional, more creative techniques of make-up design. In my opinion this creative freedom is very important when you consider makeup artistry to be a form of personal artistic expression – make-up artistry is just that – ART” Analese remembers acquiring the curiosity for make-up at an early age. “As a young girl, even when I travelled, most kids would spend their money on candy, or games or something - I remember spending mine in the drugstores on Cover Girl eye shadows and Bonnebelle lip glosses. One year my mom ordered a makeup set, including video tutorials and accompanying cards with makeup tips. I remember spending HOURS glued to the TV absorbing all the information and hours more practicing on my mom. I think that's where the madness really began”. INSPIRATION: One artist that has definitely been a huge inspiration Analese’s life, is the late, great Kevyn Aucoin. “His books, all of which I still currently own, had been a huge platform in my early years of research, and any one who has ever read or referenced them can attest to the wealth of information and awe-inspiring transformations that he portrays in his work. He definitely pushes the limit and I admire that about him. With no formal training, his vision was far-reaching. His work is nothing short of amazing and he built a huge empire for himself and created magic on some of the most legendary faces from the worlds of fashion, music and film. Truly one of the most inspirational makeup artists in my opinion”.

hat would a local superhero
look like? And if they could use superpower strengths to help Trinidad, what would they do with that power? The 2013 not for profit SUMMER HEROES art therapy programme asked these questions, and this year the answers culminate in a photographic exhibition of 21 heroes- a series of 42 prints, portraits of the heroes ‘as they are’ and in full costume, wearing masks. The 2013 heroes with varying special needs such as Autism or cognitive learning delays are students of the Goodwill Industries. They are inviting the public to view them in their created costumes. What do they look like? Some have tie dyed capes, papier mache masks made from old comics, or belts and protective devices made from reusable materials like egg cartons, plastic bottles or toilet paper rolls.
In the past K2K has had the opportunity to work with Jaime Lee Loy, owner of Trinidad Home Studio, in the capacity of videography and photography. However, Trinidad Home Studio latest venture, Summer Heroes, is so heart-wrenchingly powerful that we believe it is definitely worth sharing. Jaime Lee Loy’s initiative, Summer’s Heroes, is definitely one that inspires others to dream and dream big!
Art therapy uses creative activities to assess a participant psychologically and to achieve a therapeutic and psychologically positive purpose. SUMMER HEROES asks young people between the ages of 6 and 10 (older if cognitively functioning at this age) to depict themselves as superheroes while pursuing therapy. After inventing their own personal avatar based on their own talents and strengths, they are asked to imagine positively affecting their own lives, communities, country and world. SUMMER HEROES nurtures imagination, creativity, social awareness and leadership in the nation’s most important heroes – it’s children and young people. According to founder Jaime Lee Loy, “This year we concentrated on the environment and invited conservation groups to encourage the heroes in making costumes in an old mas style using reusable materials.” The Workshop included a full week with art therapists and guest facilitators ranging from various NGOs, artists, oral poets, creative practitioners, mas makers and specialists in character development. They learned to make paper, to create protective talismans from clay, tie dye, papier mache, illustration and painting techniques.

Some visitors included Sian MacClean an art therapist, local poet Muhammed Muwakil, Papa Bois Conservation, Plastikeep, NGOs Share Goodness and The Namaste Foundation, Christopher Riley from ‘Three Quarter Comics’, James Hackett from ‘We Does Draw’, mas makers Kenwyn Murray and Warren Le Platte, Jeunanne Alkins from ESP Junior, Selvyn Lewis from BARCAM, ‘Create With Me Pottery Studio,’ contemporary artists Elsa Clarke and Nikolai Noel, and many others. According to Lee Loy, “Learning to Fly was the day for making capes as well as learning about possibilities and opportunities, and Mask Making was the day to create masks as well as to challenge the notion of identity – the therapist encouraged them to emphasize their inner identity instead of using a mask to hide.”

The workshop had its development sessions in the morning while the heroes made different elements of their costumes in the afternoons. At the end of the week emerged 21 more self assured, socially conscious and responsible heroes who understood the link between being heroic and doing good deeds in real life.
SUMMER HEROES was formed in 2012 and is sponsored in part by social enterprise Trinidad Home Studio Ltd. In 2013 the project made a significant leap from their usual drawing collection of heroes to a full curriculum and art exhibition. “We did not engage the hundred plus heroes in 16 orphanages like last year..,” Lee Loy shares. “We developed the programme further, deciding to impact less in quantity but so much more in quality. We are concretising templates that work to implement them on a more nationwide scale in the future.” )*&

This love is necessary for salvation, and with it no one can be lost.

Lee Loy is a recent award winner of the Trinidad and Tobago Film Company’s Production Assistance and Script Development (PASD) programme and SUPER ME, a docu-drama interviewing heroes from 2012 and 2013 begins production in November. On October 12th an Open Day and parade was hosted and the heroes paraded in the streets accompanied by moko jumbies, steelpan and tassa. This was also a fun day for them and their families with various activities, awards and a short ceremony. Standing posed in the doorway, I saw her wings retract and expand as she slowly descended toward the tree’s branch. She was graceful – she was precise – she was glorious. The cool breeze blew over the garden. It carried the faint sounds of a melody – the chorus of the birds, the symphony of the sanctuary. Straining to listen, I caught a note – one, then two, then three. Then all at once the birds became a choir and that choir began to crescendo. My pores raised. Reaching a cadence, a different voice picks the melody. It’s my voice. Then I start to sway and my feet start to tap. There is a key change, a moment of discord – but the phrase is resolved. Moving in time to the melody, I step out of the doorway and enter the garden. My voice is clearer now and sculpts out the melody of the birds’ song. In my sanctuary I am safe. In this haven I am free. I let out a breath and the birds and I are in full harmony.

BOLD AND BEAUTIFUL For the Love Bird we imposed sculptural drama in an evening dress. At the same time, we attempted to keep it fluid and airy. Here we played with the idea of ruffles on ruffles to mesh structure with fluidity. This gown is designed for every woman, with its bellowing organza ruffles and peek-a-boo extracts. The entire effect of flesh peeking out out from ruffles is whimsical yet daring and the burst of color adds drama to the gown.
