Slow-growing welfare chicken from Denmark SLOW-GROWING BREED
About Danpo
Setting animal welfare as a standard
Animal welfare is very important to us! In Danish agriculture there is a tradition for doing things properly. We can’t ask the chickens about how they are doing. But we know that if they are bleeding and has wounds, something is wrong. This is why we always look for foot pad burns. The burns are caused as a reaction to animal contact with skin irritants – such as bedding that is damp or contains ammonia. At Danpo, our farmers do all they can to make sure the chickens do well. Partly, because we want to protect our focus on animal welfare; partly because it results in a better price at the slaughterhouse. Actually, chicken feet are a very important export product for Asia. Therefore, we work in a focused and efficient manner to reduce foot pad burns. We catch, transport and slaughter chickens as gently and quickly as possible. This is, once more, to ensure that the level of welfare is kept high, in combination with requirements for Salmonella-free meat and sustainable food production.
SLOW-GROWING BREED
*Not treated with antibiotics subject to medical prescription. A feed additive (Coccidiostats) is used to avoid disorders of the intestines in the chicken, which can be caused by parasites.

Production with the latest technology
At our slaughterhouse in Aars, we slaughter around 50 million Danish chickens every year. Fortunately, we employ personnel with strong skills in slaughtering, as well as we have the most advanced preparation and packaging technologies.
Our factory in Farre has been expanded in 2018 with the newest technology to create optimal conditions for us to use our proficiencies within frying and breading. In this way we live up to consumers’ wishes of tasty chicken products which are easy to prepare.

Rokkedahl, Nibe Focus on organic and free range chickens Our slaughterhouse in Nibe was initiated in May 2017. It is a modern slaughterhouse, especially built to handle organic and free range chickens. Chickens are anaesthetized with CO2 which makes it a much more animal-friendly type of slaughter. We believe, that you can taste animal welfare. Therefore we work each day to produce chickens that have a high living standard – because that tastes better.
About Danpo
For us food safety is the key As a Danish slaughterhouse we of course need to live up to the requirements from Danish and European authorities for food safety, requirements from third-party auditors (certifications) and customer demand. Overall, the quality system handles three areas within products and processes: food safety, product quality, and good production practise (GMP). Food safety is to make sure that chickens are completely safe to eat.
GMP – good production practise
GMP is an abbreviation of Good Manufacturing Practise. In other words, good kitchen hygiene. This means that our production facilities have, among other things, rules for: • • • •
Employee hygiene Cleaning and control Employee training Traceability of products
HACCP – quality control of possible production risks In order to deliver completely safe chicken products, Danpo work according to HACCP-principles. HACCP stands for Hazard Analysis and Critical Control Points. We work with HACCP-teams of competent employees monitoring production from raw materials to finished good with a focus on the parts of production with the greatest risk if anything going wrong. These critical control points are of either biological, physical or chemical nature.
IFS – international standard for food safety Our slaughterhouse is certified according to the international IFS-standard (International Featured Standards) which guar-
antees food safety. The standard is related to Danpo’s quality control and HACCP system and also includes GMP. The certification is internationally recognized and widely used on the retail market.
BRC Global Standard – consumer’s guarantee of quality and safety Our production is certified with the international BRC-standard. BRC Global Standard is the leading organization for consumer production. Therefore, a BRC-certification works as a guarantee that the product lives up to all relevant requirements for quality, safety, and production. All factors that we prioritize at Danpo. That is why we finish at the top every year during the annual BRC audit. BRC has standards for: • • • • •
Quality and risk management Conditions at the plant Product and process control Elements of sustainability Employee well-being
SQMS – McDonald’s certification of food safety Danpo is certified according to the SQMSstandard (Supplier Quality Management System), with requirements for both food safety, GMP and HACCP. This is an
internationally recognized standard used by McDonald’s. As we supply chicken to McDonald’s, it is a requirement for our products to be certified with this standard.
Halal-certified – a certification opening up for more customer groups At our slaughterhouse in Aars all chickens are slaughtered according to halal principles. The slaughter is done according to traditions and monitored by Danish veterinary authorities. In order to ensure that animal welfare is a top-notch, the process is acknowledged by Animal Protection Denmark and Danish Veterinary and Food Administration.

Animal welfare
A great taste of welfare We work together to give our chickens a better life. That’s why we apply core values to ensure that we always contribute to better animal welfare. 100% Danish
We are proud to say, that our chickens are 100% Danish. Our chickens live their entire lives in Denmark on farms all over the country.
Slow-growing breed
All our chickens descend from a slow-growing breed. They grow at a natural rhythm and live a longer life than many other chickens.
Free access to food and water
Our chickens have free access to nutritional feed and fresh water, and can decide themselves when they want to eat and drink.

The Farmers
Meet our passionate Danish Farmers
At the Danish Farms, we have an ambition to improve animal welfare. On our family farms we look after each other – and of course our chickens. We work together to improve animal welfare, so that chickens can simply be chickens. That requires a bit more work – but what does that matter when you’re working for a good cause? What’s important to us is that every single chicken is raised with care. And we hope that you will help us by supporting the project. With kind regards, The Danish Farmers
*Not treated with antibiotics subject to medical prescription. A feed additive (Coccidiostats) is used to avoid disorders of the intestines in the chicken, which can be caused by parasites.

The Farmers
Local family farms with solid values At all of our Danish farms, healthy values for good animal welfare are given a pride of place. We look after each other on our family farms – and not least our chickens.
Raising the chickens
We raise Farmer’s Chicken and Organic chicken with a focus on animal welfare. A chicken needs time, space and care to grow so that it is healthy and tastes good.
Treating the animals with respect actually has an impact. We experience that every day at our many Danish farms where animals and humans thrive. Our chickens are born and raised on the same Danish farm. They live a life with lots of space and are all 100% free of antibiotics*. Yes, you might call The Danish Farms an animal welfare society. And taste the difference for yourself.
“
I have a passion for my work with chickens. After all, I have grown up with chickens and have looked after them since I was a boy. – Knud Daugaard, Buhlseje
“You have a responsibility when you have animals”
At Danpo, we have a close collaboration with farmers with focus on daily operations. In this way, we optimize breeding, manage capturing, plan chicken entry, construct new chicken houses, register data, manage agreed target weights, exchange experiences and settle deliveries. We collaborate with farmers on how we strategically establish the settlement price, finance new chicken houses, new breeds and feed, fight Salmonella and Campylo bacter, among many other things. One of our chicken farmers explains:
“You have a responsibility when you have animals. They need to be taken care of as you would like to be taken care of.”
Our meat is air-chilled after slaughtering We slaughter the chickens as quickly as possible after they arrive at the slaughterhouse. After the chicken has been slaughtered, it is air-chilled. In this way, we prevent the meat from absorbing water. This means that the consumer receives a n aturally, greater meat quality. Afterwards the c hicken is ready for the consumer.

Animal welfare
Our goal is to become the best supplier of chickens bred with focus on animal welfare. We want to make it easier for consumers to choose animal welfare when they are buying chicken. That is why we at Great Hill Farms have 2 types of chickens with high animal welfare and this makes it possible to offer a wide range of animal welfare in the freezer. Our welfare chickens apply to three types of consumers, who all focus on where their meat comes from. These consumers place great emphasis on animal welfare and are happy to pay extra for it.
Evangelists: A top-group amongst the ”premium” segment: the ones who buy at premium prices, prefer free-range and organic and purchased a premium brand the last time they bought chicken.
Premium: The ones who say that they buy at above average quality and price – and want to buy free-range and organic chickens.
Potential: The ones who say that they buy at average or above average prices
and quality and are willing to pay a little more for an increase in animal welfare.
Discount: The ones who say that they buy at low price – or will only pay for a low price for the chicken.

Organic Chicken
Organic Chicken
Our organic chickens are free birds. They are EU-organically labelled and therefore enjoy a life that many chickens would love. They choose themselves when they want to eat and drink, whether they want to be indoors or out, and when they will forage and scratch. These are chickens with the wind under their wings, and access to the outdoors from dawn to dusk.
They can walk freely around outdoors on green grass, exploring the world. The healthy, organic feed gives them lots of energy and plenty of nutrition. We spread their feed around so that they have to forage for it, just as in nature. Our organic chickens live life as naturally as possible, as recommended by Animal Protection Denmark.

In Denmark organic chicken means 100% organic! The chickens are fed with organic feed and the fields they roam in are unsprayed. This gives the chickens the perfect organic conditions which we are proud of.

Farmer's Chicken
Farmer’s Chicken
Our Farmer’s Chicken are born and raised on the same farm. That means they get to know their surroundings from when they are born. And as genuine Farmer’s Chickens, they live a pleasant, calm life with plenty of room. The familiar surroundings and clean conditions mean that they are not treated with antibiotics.
They are a slow-growing breed, allowed to grow at their natural rhythm. This improves their quality of life, and makes them stronger and healthier. They can decide themselves when they eat or drink, as they have free access to feed and fresh water around the clock.
“
All our chickens are hatched directly inthe barn. This gives the chickens direct access to food and water and prevent them from being stressed.

The environment
Eat chicken and protect the environment
It takes 7.3 kg chicken meat to emit as much CO2 as 1 kg beef If we eat chicken for dinner all seven days a week, our contribution to CO2-emissions will still be lower compared to if we eat beef once a week. So we are proud that our food products allow you to eat meat in good conscience with respect for the environment. At the same time, at Danpo we have taken a number of measures to reduce the environmental impact. For instance, a number of our refrigerated trucks have been supplied with solar panels on the roof – a small contribution of less CO2.
