on’t just review the table of contents. The idea of linking an idea to some aspect of editorial content can sometimes be effective, but an editorial that simply tells readers what story appears on what page is worse than useless. It’s a tactic that guarantees the editorial won’t be read. Set aside quality time to think about and write the editorial. The editorial is often the last page to be completed by association staffs because the person who is writing it is likely to be the same person holding together the rest of the magazine. When time runs out, the editorial suffers. Too often, it is written in hasie and dropped in at the 13th hour. Don’t be boring. Although it is one of those points that always seem to be for the other person, a sober, objective review of recent editorials may be appropriate. Richard J. O’Brien, in an article about association publishing legalities, wrote: “The bane of every association editor is the president’s page -- it’s always late, often boring, and sometimes a libel risk.” Every staff is concerned about all three issues, but there is an especially painful ring of truth to the second point, whether the editorial is written by a volunteer or a staff member. Think about giving readers a straightforward way to interact with you. In one association where members sometimes battle a grim and humorless professional image, the publisher asked readers to share their best jokes, cartoons and funny stories about their work. All submissions were compiled, inexpensively bound, and sent in booklet form to the contributors and others. Such tactics might not work in every issue, nor in every association setting, but the underlying concept can sometimes become an element in the successful editorialist’s repertoire.

of season 43 SUMMER 2010 FASHIONISTA

rainbow

Colors are important. They say a lot about the personality of the wearer, determine her status, age and interests. Besides, they create visual illusions to help the girl to improve the look of her shape: become slimmer, taller, etc. To always be fashionable one should choose tones designers suggest in their collections. Stylists involved with the viannual colour meeting organised by Eurovet have said that while we will probably see these colours used on their own to some degree, we will mostly see them as parts of either embroidery or used in extremely colourful pop graffiti prints. Also predicted is a re-occurrence of the romantic trend and inspirations taken from the Pop Art of the sixties and seventies.

The color trends for the current season are the following:

or an industry continuously criticised for its ‘in-a-bubble’ mentality, sometimes fashion really does itself no favours. A prime example of this came in the form of Vivienne Westwood’s menswear collection in Milan this month, which featured a cringe-worthy collection of ‘homeless-chic’, featuring men in disheveled jumpsuits pushing shopping trolleys down the runway. (Another came only last week when the winner of London College of Fashion MA menswear designer based his collection on the clothes ‘worn by Jews in their transfer from concentration camps.’) Honestly, sometimes I wonder why I bother trying to defend them. At times like these, we need to stand back, ignore the controversy and remind ourselves of the supreme talent and fashion genius that allowed Vivienne Westwood to be carried away on this fashion cloud in the first place. Then (almost) all can be forgiven. Miss Vivienne Isabel Swire was born on April 8 1941 in Glossop, Derbyshire. After school, she embarked on a jewellerymaking course at Harrow School of Art, but struggled to find a way to make an income from her designs, turning to stints as a secretary and a teacher instead. Westwood finally made a late entry into the fashion scene in her mid-thirties, for which we remain forever grateful. In 1965, Westwood met husband-to-be and artistic-soulmate, Malcolm McLaren and her career began to flourish. Together, they opened ravaged boutique on 430 Kings Road, London. Westwood captured the essence of confrontational anti-fashion long before other designers recognised the subversive power of punk style.

maestro Their shop, reflected a powerfully altering vision in the fashion world, under the mantra Let It rock (1971) and subsequently Too Fast to Live, Too Young to die (1972). From the start, the emphasis was on a 1950s-revival, derived from the delinquent styles of 1950s youth culture. The impractical pins and brash tartan of her designs were lived in flesh and sound by anarchists The Sex Pistols. The black leather, which underwent a massive resurgence this winter, made provocative allusions to previously unconnected worlds outside of fashionsuch as sadomasochistic sex in the Bondage collection of 1976. This collection was moulded into black leather and rubber and the clothes were studded, buckled, strapped, chained, and zipped. Westwood stepped into a new era in 1981. She transferred her fixation with emotionally charged youth movements and besotted us with the New Romantics movement instead. Utilising historical revivalism in the form of 18th century shirts and hats, Westwood brought us the Pirates collection with the signature ‘pirate boots’ being a particular favourite of mine. It encapsulated the spirit of the romantic rebel: a genius concept in fashion. She continues to shock and fascinate the fashion press and the public, recently forging a surprising creative friendship with Pamela Anderson for her latest campaign. It is this impulse to do the unexpected which makes her an icon of British fashion and an eternally modern designer. Romantic rebel will undoubtedly be lurking in your wardrobe, in some shape or form.
