PIXEL CITY The concept is inspired from SuperStudio - Continuous Monument. In my imagination, the Nambour is built up by 3 meters x 3 meters x 3 meters cubic pixel. Each pixel represents desire of people and the function of space, all the pixels combine togther to form the town, the city. Rem Koolhaas believes every skyscaper is a city as it provides different programme with a building. So he said skyscaper is city within city. In this project, I try to rotate the “vertical city” to “horizontal city” and apply the “pixel city” concept into micro-level.

WEEK 1 In week 1, I met two tutors who are Jim Gall and Clare Elizabeth Kennedy. In this semester, the project is future design in Nambour which is design a sustainable future for the Nambour community. I will focus on 5 points of sustainability including social, environmental, economic, cultural and spiritual. For example, we need to think about the local manufacturing, economy and culture during design. Jim divided us into 4 groups and did a brainstorm about a simple material – brick. We needed to think about the whole lifecycle of brick from manufacturing, transportation, design, construction to demolition. This exercise had inspired me a lot that I need to think deeply during design even it is just a material selection. At last, my design can improve the community with harmony, respect, freedom in the future.
WEEK 2 In week 2, Jim has mentioned a book which is calledThe Art of War by Sun Tzu. This book is so meaningful for us because it teaches us how to deal with affairs. Furthermore, we presented site analysis with different aspects including economy, ecological, social, historical and cultural. We found that there has many opportunities and potentials to develop a better community for Nambour future. At last, Jim taught us how to draw 2 points perspective, it is very useful for represent your ideas by quick sketches.
WEEK 3 In week 3, we went to Nambour for studio lesson and site visit. We chatted with Sunshine Coast Council and community people. I found that agriculture industry is very important in Nambour and it makes up over 50% of local economy and it is an isolated area and highly depends on private car as a transportation, so car parking is necessary and important. Jim taught us that we need to have our own vision for the project, use our heart, our emotion to create a heart design. The designed building should have value and benefit the community. Furthermore, we need to base on 3W1H when doing our design concept which are “What? Who? Why? & How?”. Lastly, increasing population in Nambour is a big considering and we need to develop a sustainable future for the community rather than a fancy building.

WEEK 4 In week 4, we had a talk about sustainable process in furniture making in Fiskar’s village whichlocates in Finland. The village generates an ecological system by 5 main strategies: Corporation, social community, historical, natural environment and built environment. It provides space with low rent to professional craftsman and design and allows them to set up business and employ local people as labours. It not only creates a humanity for community, but also protects professional autonomy and traditional handcrafts. Jim mentioned the vision of your design is based on the demands and they can be verified.
WEEK 5 In week 5, I had an individual desk criticize of my design with Clare and I presented my feeling of Nambour wich is full of cultural, historical and playful town. My design intention is revoke of memory; recognition of identity and regain of pride of Nambour. My building functions as artist's hub and the target will be tourism, locals, teenagers and artists which creates a creative industry in Nambour CBD. My design concept is came from Rem Koolhaas and russian avant-garde and it gives a flowing and dynamic feeling for users, so they can freely pass through different programmes within the building. Clare gave me some recommendation that I need to find out the typology of the Nambour town and try to innovate the existing building or areas which is more economic and sustainable.
WEEK 6 In week 6, I tried to break the massive building into different block. Each block represents the special programme and functions. My idea is inspired from SuperStudio - Continuing Monuments. I tried to divide the Nambour town into different tiny cubes, each cube represents one special programme. My building is built by number of cubes with Bone & Skin Structure. I used white and black colour for my building facade. White is used for public access building and black for high privacy building. I will further develop the cubic system in next stage of design.
