The site is situated along the River Ouse and close to York’s main train station. The site is closeby the Guildhall which is one of the momumental buildings in York. The closest bridge to the site is the Lendal Bridge.

York City Media Centre: Animation Media Centre Concept- ‘Plugging in’

Conceptual image of the concept - Fitting all the elements together

- The concept is based on the idea of how animations come together - Different departments work on different of the animation - All the elements are then brought together or ‘plugged in’ to create the finished product

- Interaction between each element, for example how public would interact with the private and how they could co-exist - Adaptable idea of how these elements could be reorientated to suit the surrounding

Public Lifts

Structural cores

Plug in elements

This is the load bearing elements in the design. The cores contains the services running through them for example the toilets and lifts. They are made from in-situ concrete and run all the way down the basement and act as foundation

The rooms and spaces in the building are then ‘plugged in’ to the cores and some at different levels. The weight will be distributed down the core and the other plugs underneath it

Cores with plug in The different levels and elements that stick out will offset the whole form and make it less builky

York City Media Centre: Animation Media Centre Circulation Development

Aspects that work well Aspects to consider in next design Public circulation

First circulation idea - Building located on the square

Private circulation

- Square supported with pilotis Potential site

- Same contour level as the alleyways - Linked to the bridge and extended walkway

The floating garden can only be access when the public is using the bridge or the walkway off Lendal bridge. The pontoon/garden also appears out of place with the other circulation elements

- Another walkway attached from lendal bridge to the square - Linked to a garden with pontoon underneath it so it will not get floated

Second Circulation idea - Open space in the middle where the design will be situated and public cannot walk in front of the Design so that users will have to walk around the design and admire the architecture rather than walk straight pass it Extended Walkway

The space where the design may be located may cause a disruption with the circulation as the public from the extended walkway will have to walk around the design and to get to Lendal bridge

- The bridge from Aviva has been removed to keep the circulation around the site more simple and easier to navigate - Private circulation is located to the back of the site where vehicles can enter without disturbing the rest of the circulation

Third circulation idea - Cut out in the square where the building can fit in and look like it is suspended there

Extended Walkway

There is currently 2 main public circulation path which are the extended walkway and the walkway from Lendal bridge. The bridge linking across the river will not be used as much as there is not a high amount of circulation by that area

- Still like a square so that users can walk all the way round the building in the middle and the foundation will be below the square - Services will also be situated below the walkway

York City Media Centre: Animation Media Centre Volumetric Studies

Aspects that work well

Diagram showing the load bearing structure

Aspects to consider in next design

Diagram showing the public and private spaces

Public space Private space

The floors alternate between public and private space. There is a atrium running through the Design, so that the public users for example the Visitors can look through the atrium down to the other floors and observe the animators at work

First Volumetric study This study is focused on the structure and how the interaction between levels can occur. By creating an atrium through the design, the ground floor will have an 3 floor height space and become the Highlight of the design

By creating an atrium, the fluid of circulation will be altered may be unsuitable for animators who want to get from one side of the building to another

By using structural columns similar to the layout of the precedent study, it will free up the Internal space and not be inhibited by load bearing walls.

Second Volumetric study Diagram showing the load bearing structure

Diagram showing the interaction between levels

This is an adaption of the first volThe light shaft may cause reflectance on the umetric model and the floors has been screens in the graphic studios. Natural light will rotated on the axis slightly on each have to be controlled into the desired space floor. This will allow a different view on each level and the top level will extend out onto the river

By off setting the floors slightly, it will allow a slightly different view on each floor. The atrium will also act as a light shaft, bringing light to all levels

The structure is similar to the first study, However the floors are less structural and Cantilevered from the columns which will create a more open space

Diagram showing the load bearing structure

Diagram showing the public and private space and orientation

By placing the private space on the top floors and towards the back of the site, it will be less exposed to the sunlight and will not be disturbed by the public

The public will not be able to interact with the private studio, therefore opposing the concept.

The top two floors will be cantilevered off the structural columns to create a open space. The top two floors are private studio and without any structural elements restricting their space, they can create their own studio space

Third Volumetric study The public floors would be located on the lower floors and the private will be on the top floors so that they will not be disturbed. The top floors will also be cantilevered off the structural columns

York City Media Centre: Animation Media Centre Development Aspects that work well Aspects to consider in next design Public circulation

Diagram of the public circulation

The circulation on the third floor is not very restricting. There is a gallery space where they can explore the previous works made in the centre and then go into the digital preview room to watch some of the previous work Ground Floor

First Floor

Third Foor

Currently the private studios are enclosed in glass and visitors can look into the room and observe their activities, however this does not provide a unqiue experience of animation There are currently 2 entrances into the site: one from the riverfront and the back of the building. This may cause confusion for visitors

Private circulation

Diagram of the private circulation

The lifts take the animators directly to the third floor to preview their own work. The service lift does not interfere with the public or private circulation either

River Ouse Site Plan` Scale 1:200

Ground Floor

First Floor

Second Floor

The staffs using the studio will be restricted in their studio as the centre of the floor is opened to the public and will be inconvenient for the staffs The loading entrance only has direct access to the service lifts and cannot access the restaurant, which will make it difficult to get equipments and food into the kitchen without disturbing the public

Photograph of the concept models The plug in concept comes through in the models and the staircase becomes the atrium of the building

Public Spaces Private Spaces Scale 1:200

Gallery space

Floor plas illustrating the public and private spaces

The gallery space detracts from the digital preview rooms. The digitial preview room are also facing onto the river and the space could be utilised where the public can see the amazing view

The private studio will block all of the views overlooking the River from the public. From the earlier analysis of the studios, they are normally open plan to allow users to create their own space Ground Floor

First Floor

Second Floor The private space is located next to the Municpal office block and does not take up or block any of the stunninf views around York

Concept model In this design, there are structural cores running up the whole design containng the services like the circulation and toilets.

The restaurant is now located on the top floor so that diners and staffs can relax with the amazing view of York

This was taken from the precedent study on how the media centre has 4 main structural columns and the floors are supported by them

The viewing platform allows visitors to observe how animators work without disturbing them

The staircase does not fit with the angular form of the design. This staircase is also unsuitable for large numbers of people as the tread becomes smaller towards the inside of the staircase The form of the digital preview rooms do not suit the rest of the form of the design because of the slanted walls.

Site Plan` Scale 1:200 Section Concept Model There are opportunity views of York Minster from the staircase, therefore the staircase could also be made into a viewing platform as well as circulation

The plugs are not obvious enough from the external view therefore to emphasise the concept, the plugs could extend further away from the core

The cores will act as load bearing elements which will allow more fluid spaces within the building and can be adapted to suit the occasion.
