STUDIO LIVING FOREST HANGING GARDENS OF PALMAS KLAUS K. LOENHART Univ.-Prof. Dipl.-Ing. Architect spoluautor: Maryam Zareiniakan

Aim of this project is to build activated landsca-

VEGETATION

pe with social housing units in economical but also environment-friendly way. Bringing gardening and living together was an obvious option, since giving people opportunity to grow their own food and even work in the neighbourhood would spare citizens long time (approximately 1,5 hours one way) they take to travel to the city centre to work and do shopping there. We are

CONCRETE

trying to give people opportunity to live calm life with their family and friends in the green neighbourhoods. In this design we were trying to follow the needs of the people as well as the nature we work with. We are following the topography of the plot (steep on the western side). Trying not to take away the green spaces we are covering with building activities, so we decided to create an elevated platform of continuous garden almost originating from the idea of spectacular Hanging Gardens of Babylon. Basic principal of the project is to create independent structure of the gardens from reinforced concrete that is also creating the roofing and outlining the space for housing area. This space can be filled later, and not necessary at once, with housing units (brick walls + concrete ceiling). Addition layer is a greenery creating the ecological but also cooling factor for the structure. It consists of fruit trees and typical Brazilian garden plants. This way every citizen can have a space to grow some of his favourite vegetable and because there is no chance he would be able to grow everything he needs, he can of course exchange with his neighbours which makes the relationship in the area even stronger. Many flats have common kitchen (basic social housing strategy) which encourages people to 08

prepare food together avoiding creating large amounts of waste, saving time. Plots bring people many possibilities - they can start with a simple 25 m2 flat for a small family and as the family extends they can always add the upper floor or, if not, turn it into a private terrace. Preferred material for the housing units would be brick with concrete ceiling, prefabricated window and door blocks. Most of blocks are provided with community kitchen and dining space and laundry. Last, but not least, one of the most important structures in the design are semi-transparent brick walls and vegetation surfaces which helps to cool the building without using complicated technology which is very desired quality in hot Brazilian climate.

IMMANENTE OBJEKTE AFTER SPRAWL URBAN RESEARCH Assoc.Prof. Dr. Andreas Lechner

The thing is, that our perception of city and rural landscape has been changing drastically for last centuries and only statement that is still true is: Everyone wants a healthy green habitat to live in. That gives us opportunity to approach the negative space in After Sprawl differently. IT mustn‘t be just a strictly protected, exclusively natural, agricultural piece of land, but it also has to be used as a new collective space. This is the way to create a spatial quality in Urban Sprawl by effective introduction of greenery as an active element to otherwise freely evolving structure.

KALOKAGATHIA SOKOLOVNA ZA ŘEKOU Ing. arch. Nicol Gale MgA.

KINDERGARTEN The goal of this design is to propose a solution touching the topic of buildings from socialist era built in the second half of last century.

Despite of the placement of the Kindergarten, there is enough outdoor space thanks to the rooftop garden, where children have options of different kinds of play or the possibility of planting small vegetables and fruits. Through these processes they are able to learn responsibility and other important traits.

ACTIVE HOUSE AWARDS ŠKOLKA V OBLACÍCH As it is neccesary for a design to have a particular location or context to be able to serve its purpose in an adequate manner, this design is aimed on areas of prefabricated socialist buildings in Czech Republic.

84.19 m² Main room is designed as a continuous space used for day activities, playing and educational purposes, also variable for afternoon sleeping time. It has two main spaces: opened playroom on the right side and more organised area with tables also used as a lunch area, on the left.

Separate WC for staff.

1.10 TECHNICAL ROOM 5.90 m²

1.09 TEACHERS ROOM 6.75 m²

1.08 CHANGING ROOM 7.51 m²

Technical room provides a space for cleaning aids and technical support. It is also space where children could be cleaned on their way back from garden in order to childrens abilities of messing heavily every surface after returning from playing outside (there is a shower installed in the room). It could also be used as a storage for gardening equipment and toys.

Small teachers room is used as provisory headquarters of kindergarten, changing room for the staff and occasionally logopedical or other specialists consultation room.

Area provides 22 small wardrobes and bench for children. Room is lighted through the roof window.

1.11 TERRACE GARDEN 416.00 m² Roof terrace garden is closed oasis on the top of the building which brings to children the opportunity to play in nature amongst trees. Garden is composed along the main axis - the path - with three rubber spaces with jungle gym, swings etc. filled up with trees and other plants. Everything is safely enclosed by a wall which also crowns whole building.

This corridor is very important due to its connection of service room to the elevator. It might be used as a leftover and container storage as well.

Entrance hall connects the staircase and elevator to the kindergarten.

The Kindergarten is in the shape of a block with attached garden protected by perforated wall. It’s covered all around with boards serving as a shading that unifies the whole expression of the extension, creating a semi-transparent, consistent and simple appearance. As most of the socialist buildings are getting insulated and colourfully painted, white would be a colour of choice for the Kindergarten, as the extension should not contradict its environment, on the contrary, it should work as an interesting element enhancing the perception of the area.

5.92 m²

As an example serves the type „OP 1.13“. There are 64 buildings of this type built in 10 different cities across the country. In most cases are these houses built in sets of at least 3 attached units.

Working with just a little space - considering the placement of Kindergarten - the location is asking for a simple and minimalistic solution.

10.86 m² Corridor enters all the important spaces children can use such as main room, changing room and garden. It also has connection to teachers office and changing room and technical room.

Small distance between the Kindergarten and the place of residence saves the time and energy consumed for accompanying the child to Kindergarten. The building itself doesn‘t require additional land, therefore it saves space in the neighbourhood for other function which would require direct access from the street. Its position also allows to obtain as much light as needed.

SECTION B-B' 1:100

This proposal is not taking the advantage of a particular location as these tall buildings were built in various parts of the country and the conditions of different areas have specific, often not very welcoming conditions for building additional objects. The proposal is rather focusing on the building itself.
