INTRODUCTION Thank you for joining us for the second year of Alternative Kilkenny Arts (AKA). While this branding as a festival and the brochure you hold in your hands is a new endeavor, there has been an informal fringe programme for nearly as long as the main festival itself. What we are attempting to do here with AKA is to build a stronger platform for all the distinct artistic and creative talent that exists here. The word ‘fringe’ is probably a bit of a misnomer as it indicates something ‘outside’. What AKA showcases is the diverse, colourful artistic strands that make up the cultural fabric of Kilkenny twelve months of the year. When people talk about the cultural identity of Kilkenny, so much of that can be seen in this programme. It is an arts festival that is of the city and the county. On top of that we are delighted to showcase artists from all around Ireland and abroad. This is a varied programme that has something to offer everyone. And it’s only the tip of the iceberg! There is more happening

in Kilkenny over the coming weeks than we could possibly include here so please visit our website for the extended programme. With limited time and resources, our team of volunteers has worked hard to raise awareness of the plethora of events happening this July and August. Thank you to everyone who has given their time, skills and creativity to AKA. We couldn’t achieve this without the help of our sponsors at TransferMate and the support of Kilkenny County Council and our local Arts Office. A big thanks to Karol Ryan for his graphic design work and to all the artists, musicians, creators, practitioners and misfits who make Kilkenny such a unique melting pot of creativity. Most of all we hope that you will go out and shop local and buy and support Alternative Kilkenny Arts. Enjoy the Festival! All at AKA Fringe

A long time coming, his debut album delivers in spades. Luneworks picks a nocturnal, longing mood and nails it across 44 absorbing minutes. Colleran’s Spotify playlist that soundtracked the album’s writing process pinpoints a refined bunch of influences: Brian Eno, Lee Bannon and William Basinski, amongst others. It’s a collage of these artists’ styles – ambient, drone, experimental – and more besides. KIDS ART WORKSHOPS Face Traces A simple face is drawn on paper with a black or blue marker. A series of tracing paper sheets are added and punched to hold in place. Each child works on every sheet with one colour using fine felt-tipped markers to build up the image. When finished all can be placed against the windows to maximise their illuminosity. A larger piece can then be also collectively created.

Picasso Heads and Figures Children have the chance to fold, cut, paint, glue, tear cardboard to form Picasso-styled heads. Eyes, noses, ears and mouths are added and overlapped asymmetrically to create funny sculpture-like tactile objects. Additionally a large “Rothe” figure can be collectively created in the second part of the workshop. The 17th century meets a surreal 20/21st century.

WORKSHOP FACE TRACES PICASSO HEADS AND FIGURE PLEXIGLASS & BUBBLE ABSTRACT CANVASES

Plexiglass & Bubble Abstract Canvases Acrylic paints are poured onto plexiglass and mix directly on the surface. Paper is placed over the wet paint and then the sheet is removed to be let dry. Each child can create a number of these simple prints using a variety of colours. The second part of the workshop entails painting small plastic-wrapped canvases where paint is squirted under the plastic using plastic syringes which also produce air bubbles that stay trapped to form organic patterns and shapes.
