INTRODUCTION |

AKA ALTERNATIVE KILKENNY ARTS (AKA: THE FRINGE)

Three years in and we’re still the baby festival in Ireland’s festival County. We are very proud of what we have achieved with modest funding but we want to take it further. AKA exists because of a demand; a demand for space, a demand for a platform, a demand from creative people to be part of a movement towards collaborative and community arts in Kilkenny. We see the importance of the interaction of people through arts as a means of breaking down barriers of inequality and the use of creativity as a driver of inclusion and celebration of our shared values. AKA is needed now more than ever. So here you have in your hands the collective force of nature that is AKA Fringe for 2017. In these pages you will find so many amazing creative people bringing their work to share with you. Across the various strands; visual, music, poetry, drama and spoken word are two weeks of interaction, fierce debate and most of all fun! We are grateful to all who have contributed their work and committed to AKA. We are endeavouring to include a diverse mix of work but also to spread the love across venues include some fantastic rural venues as well as Ye Faire City. AKA is grateful to all our sponsors; Transfermate, Kilkenny County Council Arts Office and Mary Butler, Ring a Link, Kilkenny LEADER Partnership and

individual patrons. We would love to directly curate and commission more original work; baby steps AKA, baby steps... Most of all we are encouraged by the support we have received through attendances at our many events and exhibitions over the past few years. We do value your views and opinions on how we can move this beast forward towards a really inclusive venture. Yes we would all love more exhibition spaces, a children’s programme and hey a collaborative community arts centre (subtle hint to the powers that be). We also simply could not fit everything in a printed programme so watch our webpage and social media for updates as the festival progresses. We are grateful to all the venues, our volunteers and voluntary committee (such that it is), Karol Ryan; a one man graphic and publishing house, Rollercoaster Records and if we have left anyone out; thank You! So be off with ye; enjoy all that AKA Fringe 2017 has to offer, enjoy the conversations and laughter, our lovely town (City) and our pretty County. Also support Kilkenny Arts Festival (full listings on www.kilkennyarts.ie) Take home memories and dreams and thanks for supporting people who make stuff... Le grá mór The AKA Fringe Festival Team

His songs have been described by The Handsome Family lyricist Rennie Sparks as ‘gritty short films that deeply and sensitively evoke the dark damp streets of modern Dublin’. He released his sixth album The Tilt of the Earth in 2016.

Let’s Get Lost feature the musical talents of Lee Casey on drums, Brian Rice on guitar, Niall McCormack on keyboards and John Hegarty on bass and vocals. AROUND THE WORLD IN 80 DAYS Trains, ships and steamer ships; elephants, Indian princesses and a suspicious detective – it’s the original global adventure! Phileas Fogg thinks he can travel the world in just 80 days. The fellows at the Reform Club in London disagree. On the very day that a £20,000 wager is made between the men, Fogg sets sail. Taking only his new servant for company, the pair race against the calendar, from the West to the East, taking on the world in the most literal sense. On their journey they interrupt a sacrifice, are arrested, stampeded by bison, victims of a falling bridge, attacked by Sioux Indians, and accused of being bank robbers, all before they reach Japan! Romance and adventure a plenty, join Off the Ground this coming summer to experience a whirlwind escapade, crossing every continent!

THE FRANK & WALTERS The Frank & Walters are synonymous with great albums, radio hits and a live show that has taken them all over the world during the course of a celebrated and critically acclaimed career. The new album, Songs for the Walking Wounded, delivered more classic Franks’ melodies, alongside some poignant tracks on what is perhaps the band’s most personal album to date. Songs for the Walking Wounded has a lyrical theme running through it that examines what goes on behind the smile. “As Irish we are good at hiding things,” explains Paul Linehan. “We mask so much that it can be very hard to tell what’s really going on with people – their true feelings and how they really are.” The Franks have also become regular festival favourites at some of Europe and Ireland’s biggest summer events, recently playing Electric Picnic 2016 and the Shine On Weekender in the UK.

HAMSANDWICH One of Ireland’s most enthralling live acts in recent times, HamsandwicH are well known for their incendiary live performances which has established them as one of the top touring acts in the country. Featuring their signature calling card of Niamh Farrell’s powerful yet sweet vocal and Podge McNamee’s juxtaposing baritone, if ever there was a band to feed off their audience it is Hamsandwich; melodic, hook-laden, and heart-warmingly charming. Their most recent album “Stories From The Surface” debuted straight in at Number 1 and in the official album chart, while its predecessor “White Fox” featured in Irish Times’ writer Tony ClaytonLea’s acclaimed book ‘101 Irish Records You Must Hear Before You Die’, describing it as a “masterclass in quality indie pop.”

MONGOOSE Fennellys of Callan presents a courtyard gig with ‘Mongoose’ on Saturday the 19th of August. This is primarily an outdoor event so please dress for the fickle Irish weather. Mongoose is a musical melty-pot, comprising the combined vocal chords, instrument-playing and song-crafting abilities of four women - Molly O’Mahony, Ailbhe Dunne, Muireann Ní Cheannabháin and Cara Dunne. Their music is an amalgamation of styles, with nods to artists as diverse as Joni Mitchell, Fleetwood Mac and Beyoncé. All four members are songwriters, which allows for an ever-evolving soundscape. Celebrated for their live performances in particular, they have made memorable appearances at numerous festivals around the country and abroad, including Other Voices, Body & Soul, Longitude and Electric Picnic since their formation in late 2012.

The playful psychosis of a Dr. Mindflip show is a trip like no other - an assault on the senses courtesy of a mad musical scientist and his masked minions. Their sound undulates between tight avantpop ditties and wild outer-space improvisations. Combined with the antics of characters like the aristocratic Owly and the gently terrifying Dollhead, no two Dr. Mindflip gigs are the same. After 2 packed-out dates in the 2016 AKA festival, the good doctor and his dubious troupe return to host 2 very different shows...

KILKENNY ARCHIVES Searching through the gems of our heritage John Kirwan manages and curates the important work of Kilkenny Archives. It is essential that every county maintains a strong archival record for future generations. On this special AKA event John will take you on a journey of discovery through the gems of the collection and will argue the case for a wider engaging with why the archives are so important to Kilkenny, and to Ireland. THE DIGITAL DARK AGES – A fictional take on future archives How will future archaeologists learn about daily life in the 21st century? The social media, websites, online storage that we take for granted will likely have evaporated within half a century. Nuala Roche will read excerpts from her speculativefiction novel Hello World. The novel is set in near-future Ireland when everything digital is lost. Nuala will talk about aspects of digital preservation and obsolescence in technology that inspired parts of the book. We Are Here curated by Lynda Phelan Artist: Darren Caffrey www.darrencaffrey.carbonmade.com Artist Statement: On our phones and on our screens at home, we find images of the world, each one showing us how the world is made of images. Of course, images do not make up the world but are just another material from which to draw human spirit closer to us. With so many sources of imagery, I want to present some versions of my own, so that just like paintings, what they are made of can be a way of seeing as well as a thing to see. MARGARET DOYLE HOBBS

ANTHONY HOBBS

LUCINDA ROBERTSON

Margarets work for this exhibition is based on found objects, both natural and manmade in her garden. Finding discarded things in the garden fascinates her, shards, shells, feathers, nests and dead creatures. In addition to the framed coloured drawings of found shards, shells and feathers etc. she has included a work made in tribute to the Tuam Babies.

Any meaning or message is in the eye of the beholder. The prints are archival pigment on rag paper. For me, photographs are a visual aidememoire to the actual encountered experience. I remember more images than I make. I have also included some video sequences that are really just time based still images in the sense that the camera does not move but time does.

Cinders Glass is a range of contemporary studio art glass. The work is characterized by simple forms with coloured detail, utilising the transparent characteristic of the material. The design influence comes mainly from Scandinavia, where Lucinda studied glass making at Orrefors Glasskolan in Sweden - after specializing in glass at the National College of Art & Design, Dublin,

LILY IRWIN

VIOLET SHIRRAN

GEOFFREY HEALY

Lily Irwin is an Irish artist based in London, studying an MA in Children’s Book Illustration at Cambridge School of Art. Lily’s work is rooted in observational drawing, finding the seeds of inspiration in the world around her - the past plays a dominant role, exploring characters and the driftwood of their lives through photographs, letters and film.

Cloth is at the heart of my work and stitch is my preferred method of mark making. I work deliberately stitch by stitch and like the slow meditative and repetitive nature of hand sewing. Taking my themes from nature, I print with dyes using screen print and relief print, a technique that allows the image to become part of the fabric rather than sitting on the surface.

If you have a hot chocolate moment with a favourite mug you realise that the mug offers so much more than function alone. So different from the experience a plastic cup offers. It is this difference, the space between function and nourishment that interests me. The well crafted pot can influence a space and enrich a life. www.healy-pottery.com

ANNABEL KONIG Interdisciplinary in nature, my practice employs a wide range of media. I am not tied to any one discipline. In fact, my practice requires me to explore new and combined methods, thus discovering conclusions relevant to the work I wish to explore. The surrounding that I find myself in has always been part of my process, it enables me to select what I see, it is the centre point from which new projects develop. I currently live in a rural setting and that cannot but be part of what I make. The one underlying constant that does run through my work is the landscape.

KILKENNY PHOTOGRAPHIC SOCIETY 34TH ANNUAL EXHIBITION 2017

“DESTRUCTION” PEN & DIGITAL by Noah Hamilton For years after studying Printmaking at the Limerick School of Art & Design I reverted back to mainly drawing keeping a sketchbook with me where ever I went. My main influence was a journalistic polish artist called Felix Topolski of whom drew world events from the 1930’s on to the 70’s on his travels with fleeting strokes of the pencil depicting important figures and events in his lifetime. I chose pen for it’s definitive line and it was easy to see in dark venues as of public houses and other nightclubs. Music was another passion and as the interest grew especially in my second year of college, my main subject matter was the music scene, the people, the instruments and everyone who participated in the weekly ritual of the open mics in my area.my pen work yet on occasion I do revert back to the old style when called for.

This year’s exhibition will show the diverse range of styles and creativity of our members and the visitor will see a wide diversity of images from flora to fauna, local landmarks in all seasons, travel, landscapes, seascapes and much more including both traditional and newer digital art forms. Also on display will be our winning prints from competitions during 2016 & 2017 seasons and members who have achieved distinctions from the Irish Photographic Federation will have their award winning panels on display also. ‘FISH-SPEAK’ LAUNCH AT STONE HOUSE BOOKS

The use of computer software to aid my work has also played with my style and I would considered it now as an essential tool to my repertoire as well as traditional to modern digital printing techniques. Hours, days, months and years have been accredited to using photo manipulation software to embellish my work into a finished product for online and print, the past has always been practice.

Stone House Books hosts the launch of Fish-Speak a collection of poems by Nuala Roche. This first chapbook publication of Nuala’s work includes the 15 poems that were Highly Commended in the Patrick Kavanagh Competition (First Unpublished Collection) and 1st prize-winner at Dromineer Literary Festival 2016. Nuala’s poems have regularly appeared in the Kilkenny Arts Office Poetry Broadsheet.
