SMITHWICK’S KILKENNY ROOTS FESTIVAL
2015
Welcome again to the Kilkenny Roots Festival, our eighteenth year! We were delighted to accept the IMRO Best Small Live Music Festival 2014 award recently and we are sure that the 90 plus shows we have programmed will help us maintain this status. We are very grateful for the continued support of Diageo, Failte Ireland, Kilkenny City Vintners, Kilkenny County Council and all our sponsors, patrons and friends. A warm welcome to everyone who has travelled from Ireland and to our ever growing audience from overseas. We hope you enjoy the music and all that Kilkenny has to offer over the weekend. John Cleere Festival Director.
SPECIAL THANKS TO Our organising committee of Arthur Drohan, Willie Meighan, Willie Byrne, Karol Ryan, Malcolm Noonan and all our volunteers. To Karol Ryan (Programme, poster & website), Brian Cleere (Online marketing), Anthony Griffin (Photography), Darragh Byrne (Videographer). To The Irish Times, Irish Examiner, Irish Independent, Evening Herald, Kilkenny People, Kilkenny Reporter, KCLR FM, RTE, Del Day (Ark PR UK).
GEORGE BYRNE R.I.P. Our condolences to George's family and his partner, Julie, on his untimely passing on April 2nd. George was a great supporter of the festival from the beginning and gave us much invaluable coverage in the national press.
THE BARR BROTHERS The band features brothers Brad on guitar/vocals and Andrew on drums, classical harpist Sarah Pagé, and pianist/bassist Andrès Vial. RYAN BOLDT Ryan, singer and songwriter in The Deep Dark Woods, brings his new solo project to Kilkenny. He’s driven by influences like Shirley Collins, Ian and Sylvia Tyson, Bob Dylan, and The Stanley Brothers, but even as he mines the past, he’s not trying to contemporize these sounds. He just happens to be making newly recorded music in the same vein, the way they used to make it, before the world got so fast and cluttered Sat

CALEXICO A big welcome back to Calexico, who have gone on to worldwide acclaim since appearing at the festival back in 1999. Joey Burns says about their new album, Edge Of The Sun: “All in all, this album is about pushing through the blue to brighter days. Calexico has always had that element of hope, going back and forth between a positive outlook and embracing desperate or dark themes that I think we all share.” Sun

SONS OF BILL What makes Sons of Bill so great is their ability to be so unabashedly at home with themselves in a time when some roots bands feel like they are trying a little bit too hard, and rock and roll bands are starting to feel desperately over-conceptualized. Maybe that’s part of playing music with your brothers: No point in faking it.

MUSIC BAREFOOT
LOUDEST WHISPER
Barefoot is Vincent Vaughan (vocals/guitar) and Gay Brazel (dobro/mandolin), playing a mix of Americana, western swing, bluegrass, old country and some old style jazz songs rearranged to fit their own style.
They mix a rare blend that is three parts folk, two parts country blues and two parts melodic contemporary rock, all shaken up with a dash of classic songwriting. For those connoisseurs in the know, this cocktail is known as a 'Loudest Whisper'.

There’s energy, there’s cohesion, there’s a bunch of guys on stage having the craic, whether it’s the fine tuning of originals taken from their EP released earlier this year, or their note-for-note cover of T.Rex’s 20th Century Boy.” So Kilkenny Fri
