Welcome to The 28th Kilkenny Rockfall Festival 2016
W
elcome to the 28th Rockfall Festival which takes place in Kilkenny City over the October Bank Holiday weekend. From Friday 28th to Monday 31st there is something to suit all music fans over the 4 days of the festival. In 2015 the Rockfall Festival raised €14,312.52 which was donated to the O’Neill Centre by Eamon Cleere and his voluntary organising committee. A special thank you also to Mary Shortis Wong and her ‘Lucky Dip’ team who have worked year on year at the Rockfall Weekend. We are grateful once again to the publicans of Kilkenny for their continued support. A huge thank you to the many bands and musicians who play free of charge each year and also to the many music fans for supporting all of our gigs. Special thanks to this year’s organising committee: Malcolm Noonan, Cathal McFarlane, Tomas Jackman, Karol Ryan, Brenda Walsh, Caroline Long and to the many volunteers who help make this festival a reality. A warm welcome to the many visitors to Kilkenny over the Bank Holiday weekend. We hope that you enjoy the music and all that Kilkenny has to offer. All monies from the weekend will once again be donated to Enable Ireland, O’Neill Centre, Kilkenny.
O
ur great friend Eamon Cleere has been associated for many years with the O'Neill Centre and we're all the better for it. It's hard to believe that this is the first year we won't see him at the front and centre of the Rockfall Festival where he has been for 27 years. Rockfall is still Kilkenny's longest running music festival and was Eamon's passion, born out of his deep love of music. Every year, some of Kilkenny's greatest bands reformed, resumed, carried on bigger and better and made many great nights happen; so many young Kilkenny musicians had their first opportunity to indulge their passion and many are still playing music as a result of Eamon's encouragement. He has worked with so many bands, sound engineers, venues and volunteers every year to make Rockfall the great event it has become. He has also organised tribute and nostalgia nights, all of which have been highly successful. Eamon's name is synonymous with the O'Neill Centre. He is a truly unique person, outstanding in his efforts over the years for the Centre, raising its profile, bringing in money to help our services and we'll miss him at the helm of Rockfall. We wish him well in his future endeavours and hope he knows how truly grateful we all are for his hard work and commitment.
A Little Piece of Happiness - The O'Neill Centre Hi, my name is Therese and I am a parent of three boys who attend the "O'Neill Centre " that is Enable Ireland, Kilkenny as outpatients and hand on heart I can honestly say they are our lifeline. As a part-time public health nurse and a mother of children with disabilities I highly recommend the centre both as a health professional and as a client of their services. In 2003 Enable Ireland was the deciding factor in us as a family moving back to Kilkenny such a wonderful service was not available in Dublin. Enable Ireland is the only centre of its kind in Carlow/Kilkenny (and beyond) which provides Physiotherapy , Occupational Therapy, Speech & Language Therapy and Family Support Services for children aged 0-18 years with a primary physical disability under the one roof and a specialised pre-school for children aged 18 months to 6 years.. When people ask me what’s so special about Kilkenny yes I talk about its beauty , its history , the hurling but to me it’s a city which is so fortunate to have a centre like the O'Neill Centre. For many of you, your families may never enter the door of the O'Neill Centre but for those of us who enter it often on a daily basis it always brings a smile to our face. It’s one of the happiest places I know. A place to celebrate what others consider small achievements in life which are major milestones to the rest of us. On this the 28th Rock fall festival I say a huge thank you to Eamon Cleere for developing this wonderful festival which not only raises much needed funds to sustain the O'Neill Centre (we need to raise €100,000 annually) but to raise awareness of its existence in our community. I also wish to thank all the musicians, publicans, restaurants and hotels who have been so supportive since day one. I also wish to thank Paula Rudkins and her amazing staff not only caring for but caring about our children. Lastly and most importantly are the people of Carlow/Kilkenny for your continuous and abounding support of Enable Ireland Kilkenny, without whose support there would not be an O'Neill Centre. From a very grateful parent , Therese.
From Cover to Cover The great local performers who brought you the Tom Waits tribute night in Cleere's last year have thrown the book open this year and will bring you the music that has inspired them to write and perform. An evening of 'cover versions' of John Martyn, Joni Mitchell, Crosby, Stills, Nash & Young, Tom Waits, Lucinda Williams, Nick Drake, Patti Griffin, John Grant, Dolly Parton and The Blue Nile, plus many more. A night that could turn into a right auld session.
