Smithwick’s Kilkenny Roots Festival 2014 Recently I read an interview with Patrick deWitt, whose novel The Sisters Brothers was shortlisted for the Man Booker Prize in 2011. Asked what advice he gives to aspiring writers, deWitt replied, “Don’t read what everyone else reads. I tend to avoid the bigger names because of the sense that they’re already taken care of. And there’s a sense of satisfaction when you dig around a bit and turn up a gem.” If you substitute music for writing the Kilkenny Roots philosophy is very similar. For 17 years, like deWitt, we have avoided the bigger names. The satisfaction has been in digging around and turning up those hidden gems. We have some exciting finds on both the ticketed programme and the free Smithwick’s Music Trail again this year. Enjoy the musical treats all over the city this weekend and thank you for your continuing support. John Cleere Festival Director.
