A SEAMLESS TRANSITION AS YOUTH PRODUCTIONS TAKE TO THE STAGE Welcome to the Watergate Theatre and to our production of Miss Saigon. We are delighted that this show will bring to the fore the talent that is so much alive with the youth of the city and county. As well as Kilkenny, we welcome members of the cast from our neighbouring counties. Watergate Youth Productions is a shining example of committed, talented and enthusiastic novices learning the trade and delivering the very highest standards. Their dynamic enthusiasm brings a much needed freshness to local productions since they captivated us with Les Mis, their initial production, in 2008. Watergate Youth continue to enthral and entertain. With pride we have watched them progress. We have witnessed their self worth and self confidence increase as many of them journeyed from Jesters to the polished performers they are today. We acknowledge their efforts in the pursuit of acting excellence and reflect positively on the inescapable fact that in a relatively short time, the future success of The Watergate Theatre will rest almost exclusively, on these young shoulders. Aware of the calibre of individuals within the group we are prepared for a seamless transition. The ethos that permeates, allows us, with confidence to pass the baton, of amateur drama, to a new generation of talented thespians. We take this opportunity to thank all those who are working behind the scenes on a voluntary basis without whom, productions like this would not be possible. We wish the production team of Don, Olivia and Ollie a successful production and take this opportunity of thanking them for their hard work over the past few months. A HISTORY OF WAR VIETNAM (1954-75)
The Vietnamese War, or Resistance War against America – as it was referred to by the North Vietnamese – officially began on the 1st of November, 1955. Although with most wars, the reason for its outbreak and the motivation behind each side, lies long before that date.
Hồ Chí Minh
Ngô Đình Diệm
As with most smaller countries, the modern day nation known as Vietnam has had a long standing history of colonisation. From circa 111 BC to 938 AD Vietnam was an entity of Imperial China. After successfully defending its borders and repelling Imperial Chinese forces at the battle of Bach Dăng River, Vietnam secured its independence. The following generations saw the growth and prosperity of successive Vietnamese Royal Dynasties, along with the growth of the nation’s wealth and borders. By the mid-nineteenth century the increasing strength of European navies and the lucrative trade paths opening up in the Far East, brought with it a new set of colonising forces and by 1887 Vietnam was once again under foreign rule, in the guise of the French Third Republic. This colonisation, as unwanted as the previous Chinese colonisation, lasted until 1940 when – due to France’s occupation by Nazi Germany and the invasion of Imperial Japan – Vichy France agreed terms with the Japanese which would see the French forces remain in place, but ultimately being answerable to the Empire of Japan.
Lyndon B. Johnson
This double occupation lasted until 1945 with the German withdrawal from France. At which point the Japanese forces began to lose trust in the French occupant forces and interned them in March 1945, thus creating the puppet state of the Empire of Vietnam. This puppet state collapsed with Japan’s
surrender and the cessation of World War II. However, due to political unrest and mass poverty and starvation due to famine, the Japanese forces were allowed to stay in Vietnam, being seen as the only force which could – at that particular time – keep law and order in the state. The defeated Japanese forces were, less than vigilant however, and under Ho Chi Minh’s leadership the impoverished north staged an uprising which would later be known as the August Revolution. This revolution saw the Việt Minh forces seize the majority of north and central Vietnam, leading to the declaration of the independent Democratic Republic of Vietnam. This
budding northern Vietnamese state then enlisted many of the occupying Japanese force to train its new recruits and keep the current French authorities under internment. This early divide in Vietnam did not sit easily with the victorious allied forces of World War II, principally the United Kingdom, the United States and the Soviet Union. It was agreed that the land belonged to France, but with a depleted French force being unable to regain Vietnam by itself, would be aided by the allied forces in doing so. The United Kingdom would land in South Vietnam to re-arm the French Colonial force and the Chinese would invade the north to oust the standing Japanese force which was now bolstering the Việt Minh’s claim to power. At the
behest of the Soviet Union, Ho Chi Minh attempted to negotiate a peace settlement with the French which would see northern Vietnam remain an independent state – under the French Union. No such deal was struck and after the French forces, aided by its allies, ousted the Việt Minh forces in the north, the British withdrew from the south leaving Vietnam under French control once again. However, the coming years would see a rapid change in political allegiances, due to the acceleration of the Cold War and the Communist victory in the Chinese Civil War. Now, a largely antiWestern Far East power base emerged in communist China and
the U.S.S.R which was free to arm pro – communist Vietnamese rebels. In 1950 both communist China and the Soviet Union officially recognised Ho Chi Minh’s Democratic Republic of Vietnam, while the United Kingdom and the United States reaffirmed the claims of the French run State of Vietnam. The outbreak of the Korean War in 1950, with both Chinese, Soviet and American involvement on opposite sides, only served to heighten the tensions in Vietnam. Under Soviet and Chinese guidance, the Việt Minh waged a lengthy gorilla campaign on the French forces, and despite over $1 billion US Dollars being spent in support of the French regime by then US President
Dwight D. Eisenhower, the French were unable to withstand the onslaught. President Eisenhower refused to commit US troops on the ground without British support – a campaign Britain had no intention of entering – and as a result the French forces surrendered its control of Vietnam and via the Geneva Conference, negotiated the independence of Cambodia, Laos and Vietnam. Vietnam was still un-unified, with the North/South divide remaining – but now, both factions were officially under Vietnamese control. This transitional period of 1954/5 saw growing turmoil in both regions as the de facto leaders of North and South Vietnam, Ho Chi Minh and Ngo Dìm Diệm respectively, both rigged elections and carried out mass killings of rival political and religious groups in order to consolidate their powers. An independent international group of observers representing India, Canada and Poland were in agreement that neither North nor South Vietnam honoured the terms of the Geneva agreement. With growing hostilities and increasing clashes between rebel factions – 1955 would mark the official beginnings of
the Vietnamese War. For many, the most iconic vision of the Vietnamese War was the involvement of American soldiers on the ground. This would first take place in March 1965, under the Presidency of Lyndon B. Johnson, when 3,500 troops were deployed to South Vietnam – this would increase to almost 200,000 by the end of the first year. After some 10 years of American involvement on the ground and after nearly 20 years of ongoing conflict since the Geneva agreement and the withdrawal of French forces, Vietnam was reunified and the Socialist Republic of Vietnam was declared. In that brutal time frame, millions of Vietnamese – both north and south – were subject to rape, murder and imprisonment due to their political and/or religious beliefs. Hundreds of thousands of soldiers – both American and Vietnamese – were left maimed, disabled or killed. Millions more suffered after the reunification of Vietnam.

Synopsis
Miss Saigon is a musical by Claude-Michel Schönberg and Alain Boublil, with lyrics by Boublil and Richard Maltby, Jr. It is based on Giacomo Puccini's opera Madame Butterfly, and similarly tells the tragic tale of a doomed romance involving an Asian woman abandoned by her American lover. The setting of the plot is relocated to the 1970s Saigon during the Vietnam War, and Madame Butterfly's story of marriage between an American lieutenant and Japanese girl is replaced by a romance between an American GI and a Vietnamese bar girl. The musical was premièred at the Theatre Royal, Drury Lane, London, on 20 September 1989, closing after over four thousand performances, on 30 October 1999. It opened on Broadway at the Broadway Theatre in 1991 and subsequently played in many other cities and embarked on tours. Prior to the opening of the 2014 London revival, it was claimed that Miss Saigon had set a new world record for opening day ticket sales, with sales in excess of £4m reported. The musical represented Schönberg and Boublil's second major success, following Les Misérables in 1985. As of September 2013, Miss Saigon remains Broadway's twelfth longest-running show.
Authors Composer, librettist, and record producer Claude-Michel Schönberg is one half of a hit songwriting team, with lyricist Alain Boublil, that is responsible for the theater smash successes Les Misérables and Miss Saigon. The duo first teamed up in 1973 to write Boublil's first musical, La Revolution Française, in which Schönberg played the part of King Louis XVI. The following year, Schönbergrecorded an album of original material entitled Le Premier Pas. He teamed up with Boublil again in 1978 to work on the score of Les Misérables, which opened in Paris two years later. The original cast recording won two gold discs by 1981 and the Broadway production that followed garnered two Tony Awards (1987 Best Score, Best Book). Schönberg and Boublil followed up with another wildly successful musical, Miss Saigon, which opened in London in the fall of 1989 and internationally shortly thereafter. The duo's next musical, Martin Guerre, opened in London in the mid-'90s. Schönberg also produced an opera album with the Monte Carlo Philharmonic Orchestra and Julia Migenes-Johnson, and participated in all of the castings for Les Misérables.

With a front entrance on Parliament street and a side entrance onto Abbey Street, O’Riada’s pub is nestled in what is probably the most historic part of Kilkenny city. On the same street that boasts Kilkenny Court House – once home to all theatrical events in the city, Rothe house, built between 1594 and 1610 and steeped in rich local and national history and is a must to visit in the medieval city of Kilkenny. Poke your nose out on the Abbey side of the pub and you will find the Abbey church where in 1244 the Dominicans were given permission by then Bishop to draw water from the well (Kenny’s well). Also a stone’s throw from the Watergate Theatre, carrying on the theatrical tradition of the city. And of course O’Riada’s which is directly across the road from the entrance to Smithwick’s brewery where in 1710 John Smithwick led the first horse down the cobbled path to his new brewery and where we now have the Smithwicks Experience.
O’Riadas and history – sure you couldn’t make that stuff up.
