Meet The Cast Derek Dooley –
Will the Dame save the day yet again?
Dame Sprat
No stranger to the boards in Kilkenny, Derek made his debut to the Watergate stage in 1999 in Brian Friel’s Philadelphia Here I Come. This was quickly followed with appearances in the musical scrooge, The Sting:iest Man in Town, and the Arthur Miller play Death of a Salesman. Previous to his Watergate debut, Derek featured in many of the Ormonde Players productions such as Playboy of the Western World, Shadow of Gunman, My Three Angels, Lovers Meeting. He also played with Anner Players in Dreams, Schemes and Miracles by local playwright Willie Egan. This is Derek’s 14th panto since 2000 when he played the King of Beauty and the Beast. In June of 2015 Derek played the part of the canon in Moll by JB Keane presented by Watergate Productions.
Niall Bambrick –
Jack
This is Niall’s third show with Watergate Productions after appearing in Da in July 2014 and as one of the Three Little Pigs in last year’s Pantomime “Little Red Riding Hood”. Niall has many people he would like to thank for getting the part of Jack, mainly the people who turned down the role, Alan Grant, Ciaran Dunphy, Fergal Millar etc…. Niall has been KATS Theatre Group treasurer for 3 years now but will be stepping down at the AGM later this month because people are finally starting to wonder where exactly all the money has gone. Niall’s TV credits include standing behind Ted Walsh at the Galway races waving like a fool and also shouting at the end of a DJ Carey interview in Langton’s back in the early noughties. He would like to wish all the cast and crew of the Pantomime the very best(except Shay Lawlor, who he really doesn’t like) and would like to advise if his singing is off key at any stage it is purely Kevin Reade’s fault.
Laura McCarthy –
Jill
Laura has been a keen member of Kilkenny Musical Society since 2010 and has since been part of the chorus in all productions by KMS including their most recent production of “Sweeney Todd” and their award winning production of” Michael Collins- a Musical Drama”. She is vice-chairperson of the KMS Committee and is also an active member of KATS theatre group having performed with them in the past. Laura is a primary school teacher in Presentation Primary School in Kilkenny and a tutor in Jesters Stage Academy Laura is delighted to be making her panto debut as Jill and would like to thank all cast, chorus and production team for their hard work over the past few months. Break a leg to all!
Declan Taylor –
Thom Thumb
This will be Declan’s eleventh Panto in the Watergate and is delighted to be upgraded from a moronic but lovable dancing pig in last year efforts, to being the baddie this year. “This year’s role will allow me to be even more narcissistic and annoying than I normally am, and I get to do a lot of sulking and stomping” he adds. Declan has just finished directing his first Musical with KMS and is available for all types of directing work, from children’s parties to Irelands Got talent (you have my number Cowel) and everything in between. You’ll normally find me hanging around Ger Cody’s office begging for parts. “I’m not worried in the slightest about all the new and fresh faces that are in this year’s show, taking parts off us older lemons” Smirks Taylor. “On stage can be a dangerous place and accidents can happen”.
Ben Warner –
Captain Peachybot tom
Originally from England, Ben made his Irish stage debut earlier this year as Tim Moran in an adaptation of Eugene O’Neill’s ‘The Web’. Last September, as part of KATS hugely successful production of ‘The Elephant Man’, he took the role of Ross Merrick’s unscrupulous owner. As a musician and tutor, Ben is currently undertaking a mammoth project with Kilkenny Community Church revitalizing a number of classic hymns for the Instagram generation! He has two tracks currently signed to an independent record label and is working with a number of talented local individuals on solo projects in a variety of genres. Ben is also an avid film enthusiast and was almost lucky enough to feature as an unaccredited (and unpaid!) background artist in the recent Alan Partridge movie, ‘Alpha Papa’ set in his home city of Norwich. He didn’t make it to the final cut, but can just about be seen buried in the DVD extras! Ben is currently writing a radical updating of Shakespeare’s ‘King Lear’, adding a few more laughs to balance out the excess of misery and death! This is Ben’s first stab at panto since playing a particularly Ugly Sister in a youth theatre production of ‘Cinderella’.
Shay Lawlor –
Dennis
Although this is Shay’s first pantomime, he has highly amoosed in previous roles in Kilkenny Moosical Society and KATS Theatre Group, playing such great parts as the man in the blue suit and a Pirate being threatened by Matt Berry. He’s looking forward to udderly milking his role and while the steaks are high he’s filleted his time well between rehearsals and seeking bovine inspiration. While many say One Flew over the Cuckoo’s Nest was the pinnacle, I say Bull, the part of Dennis the Talking Cow is the most beefed up part he’s played for heifer (just ribbing!!) He would like to point out that Niall Bambrick knew all about the extra cash before it “disappeared ” from KATS and is looking forward to sharing the stage with Declan Taylor. Shay would like to wish all the cast the very best of luck and can only assume that what you are about to witness will show that the whole team has ensured a high brow treat.
Eve Brennan –
Itsy
Eve has been involved with many shows in the Watergate since the age of 6. Starting off in Jesters Stage Academy for 12 years and Dancewise Academy for 9 years she’s no stranger to the stage. Taking part in the annual panto in Kilkenny since 2006 as a member of the chorus and last year played her first lead in the Panto as Little Red Riding Hood, she’s delighted to be involved again for this years production of Jack and the Beanstalk.
Joe Murray article WHY BILLY WALSH LEFT IRELAND by Joe Murray A young local man has, inadvertently, stumbled upon the real reason why Irish boxing coach Billy Walsh left Ireland for the U.S.A. In a bizarre story which will feature in a criminal case to go before the courts in the new year, details will emerge of a plot to kidnap Mr. Walsh and other high profile figures in Irish life. The young man has been hailed a hero for his part in bringing to justice an infamous kidnapper. The kidnapper, who could be described as a giant of criminal enterprise, was brought down to earth by the courage and tenacity of this brave and intrepid young seeker of justice and is to stand trial for his nefarious crimes. The names of the protagonists in this sordid affair cannot be printed here as the case is currently sub judice. We will refer to the young man as J and the kidnapper as Mr. Big. This reporter has learned from reliable sources that J sprang into action on learning that his sister had been kidnapped. It’s understood that he garnered information, with no small risk to his well being, from criminal elements, which led him to believe who was responsible for his sister’s abduction; the aforementioned Mr. Big. It’s also understood that after the young man had been stalking the perpetrator for some time he discovered where his sister was being held and so began his brave rescue bid. It is an astonishing story of crime and retribution which involves a rare musical instrument, an invaluable farm animal, some very dubious characters and a list of potential kidnap victims. This reporter has learned that upon finding the location where his unfortunate sibling was
being held against her will the young man J set in motion a train of events, the details of which cannot be revealed here, which led to her eventual liberation, the dramatic felling of Mr. Big and the discovery of the list of potential kidnap victims. A spokesperson for the Garda Press Office, Superintendent John Doe, who wishes to remain anonymous, has confirmed that there is such a case pending. “I don’t wish to be quoted on this,” said Superintendent John Doe, “but it is true that this young local man had been stalking Mr. Big in order to find his his sister. And it’s true that Mr. Big is a criminal of gigantic proportions. Thankfully the young man succeeded in his efforts to fell him from his lofty perch.” As to the list of potential kidnap victims, the Superintendent had this to say; “Yes, there was such a list. Among the names on the list were those of Billy Walsh, businessman Dennis O’Brien, Daniel O’Donnell and Panti Bliss. We advised each of them that even though Mr. Big was in custody, he may have accomplices who would carry out his wishes. So that’s why Billy Walsh moved to the U.S.A., Denis O’Brien moved to Portugal and Daniel O’Donnell moved to Tenerife.” And Panti Bliss? “Well, he’s afraid but she’s not. So they’re staying put.” This reporter understands that the details of young J’s exploits will be revealed to all when Watergate Productions present the Pantomime Jack and the Beanstalk at the Watergate Theatre.

Edwina Cummins –
Bitsy
Native Kilkenny girl Edwina, has been living in sunny Florida for a number of years now, but home was calling her back and she had to answer. Since arriving back on our shores, Edwina has been active in any and all things theatre. This is Edwina’s second year doing panto. She loved being in the chorus for last year’s Little Red Riding Hood, and is thrilled to be returning this year as a cast member. Edwina is also a member of the Kilkenny Musical Society, and was part of the chorus for the AIMS nominated show Sweeney Todd.
Amy Mullholland –
Fitzy
Amy has been involved in musical theatre since the age of 12. She has appeared in numerous productions, playing Scaramouche in We Will Rock You, Syrie in The Likes of US, Swallow in Whistle Down the Wind and Christine in The Boys in the Photograph. Amy was also heavily involved in stage managing with UCD’s dramsoc during her time studying there. After a 2 year break, Amy is very excited to be back and taking part in this year’s panto. She wishes everyone the best of luck for the run and hopes everyone enjoys the show.
John Holland –
Touchy
John lives in Gowran and works in Castlecomer as a solicitor. He has been involved with Gowran, Castlecomer and Kilkenny pantomimes at different times since 1996. A long time member of KATS Theatre group, he has also acted on set for Young Irish Film Makers. This is John’s first appearance with Watergate productions.
Phillip Brennan –
Feely
This is Philip’s first return to the Watergate boards after sojourning from the stage in favour of writing, and ‘educational pursuits’. He started acting as a child by staging short and annoying (but adorable) plays with his friends, and forcing their parents to watch. Then he joined Jesters Stage Academy, where he learned to smile and face the audience. After that, he found his place acting and writing among the troupe at Dreamstuff Theatre - where things were a little edgier. Then he wasted a few years and money in university, but to return to Kilkenny’s theatre scene.
Linda Sweeney –
Thumbelina
Hailing from Tullaroan, this will be Linda’s second year with Kilkenny Panto after joining the chorus for Little Red Riding Hood last year. Linda has been singing from a young age and does many weddings around Kilkenny with her uncle Paddy Cleere, this year will see her ‘thumble’ into the acting scene!! Linda also joined the Kilkenny Musical Society last year and was part of the chorus for Sweeney Todd. “It has been great meeting new people through both Panto and KMS and I’m really looking forward to the show in January playing Thumbelina!”
Maeve O’Flynn –
Ann
A Kilkenny native, Maeve is no stranger to the Watergate having been a member of Kilkenny Musical Society since 2008. This will be her first foray into the world of Panto, however she believes that her current class of Junior Infants in Gaelscoil Osraí have provided her with plenty of opportunities to practice. Maeve is also a member of KATS theatre group and has directed and acted in some of their recent productions including Last Respects (May 2015) and Spoiler Alert (May 2014). She is a serving member of KATS committee and was involved behind the scenes in their September 2015 production of The Elephant Man. Maeve would like to take this opportunity to thank all involved in the production of Jack and the Beanstalk for their continued hard work and would like to say break a leg to all of the cast and company.
Jacqui Purcell –
Geraldine
“Jacqui is in her final year of a B.A. (hons) Arts in Theatre Studies and has performed throughout the years in numerous Site-specific, Street, Promenade and Community Theatre pieces with companies like Barnstorm, Kcat, Talking Birds, Macnas, Asylum and Trasna. She worked backstage in the Watergate in last year’s panto as well as on Sweeney Todd with K.M.S and Elephant Man with Kats. However, this year’s panto will mark her first time on the renowned Watergate Theatre’s stage. Jacqui made the mistake of admitting in auditions that she was scared of singing onstage, so obviously she has been cast as the magical singing harp! Regardless, she is SUPER excited and hopes audiences, cast, chorus and crew have a blast this year!”
Kevin Mooney –
Director
Kevin has been involved in theatre from the age of 8, first treading the boards of this very stage with Young Irish Film Makers in their production of The Children’s Crusade. At the end of his first scene, it is reported that Kevin waved offstage to his mammy in the audience, breaking the fourth wall, and setting the trend for Kevin’s future work in theatre! Kevin has been involved in local theatre company Devious Theatre, since it’s creation in 2006 and has worked as an actor, director, writer and producer with them. Directing credits with Devious include Heart Shaped Vinyl, Cannibal! The Musical, Stags and Hens. He also directed Time’s Tide with Disaffection Theatre in the New Theatre in Dublin. Recent acting work includes The Elephant Man with KATS, The Union with Devious Theatre and Bridge Street Will Be... with Trasna Productions. Kevin is delighted to be working with such a talented and hard-working cast and crew on this production and is honoured to be given this fantastic opportunity by Watergate Productions. He hopes to continue to make fun and exciting theatre in the magical land he loves so well! He would like to take this opportunity to wish everyone the best of luck on this production of Jack and the Beanstalk!
Kevin Reade –
Musical Director
Kevin made his debut with Kilkenny Musical Society as a 13 year old in 1997 in the title role in Oliver. From there he moved on to several roles with Kilkenny Youth Musical Productions and has featured in several KMS shows. Recent roles with KMS include Will Parker in Oklahoma, Fagin in Oliver, John Tallentire in The Hired Man, Seymour in Little Shop of Horrors and Frederick in The Pirates of Penzance. With Oyster Lane in Wexford, Kevin played Lumiere in Beauty and the Beast and with St. Michael’s Theatre Musical Society, he played Roger de Bris in The Producers, and Freddie in Chess. He was nominated in 2008 by A.I.M.S. as Best Comedian for Oklahoma. In 2010 his role as Fagin in Oliver was recognised with a nomination in the Best Actor Category.
