ANDY IRVINE

THE VOICE SQUAD

Legendary Irish singer/songwriter Andy Irvine is coming to the very special surroundings of St. John’s Priory, John St. With his impressive repertoire of Irish traditional songs and dexterous Balkan dance tunes, he creates an exciting new fusion of Irish and World Music - not to be missed!

The Voice Squad - Phil Callery, Gerry Cullen and Fran Mc Phail - are a group of traditional acapella close harmony singers (Gerry and Fran are from Drogheda and Phil is from Dublin) who have been singing together for almost 30 years, performing extensively in Europe, North America and Canada. Famed for a unique and powerful sound, which arises from a mixture of the two tenor voices of Fran and Phil and the underlying bass of Gerry, they have collabarated with artists such as Dolores Keane, The Dubliners, Elvis Costelloe, The Chieftans, Van Morrisson and many more. We are delighted to welcome back The Voice Squad to Kilkenny following their memorable, sell-out performance at the Kilkenny Arts Festival in 2012.

Having travelled the world with bands such as Sweeney’s Men, Patrick Street, Planxty, and more recently Mozaik, Andy continues to pursue new combinations and styles of music. He has broadened his musical horizons over the course of his forty-year career to encompass the musical styles of countries he visits, such as the Balkan folk style of playing. Between the achievements of his solo, group work and collaborations, he is a highly revered troubadour of the Irish music world. Andy Irvine never fails to deliver a pulsating, heartfelt performance.

Their combined talents provide for a vibrant and exciting live show of music and song. Beginish first came together in 1996 (under the name Samhain) with a series of performances throughout Ireland that spawned overwhelming pubic interest and a string of television appearances. Since 1997, Beginish have toured in Ireland, Finland, Canada, England, Scotland, Switzerland and Germany as well as many cities in the U.S.

EDEL FOX & NEIL BYRNE With Caoimhín Ó Fearghail Edel Fox (concertina) and Neill Byrne (fiddle) have developed their style from countless hours and sessions playing together over the years. This is evident from the beautiful synchronicity in their playing, moving through their set with some inspired sets, key changes and a lightness of touch that seems effortless. Both have performed across Europe and the States extensively and are widely regarded as top class musicians and teachers. They are joined by Caoimhín Ó Fearghail, recent winner of 2012 TG4 Young Musician of the Year, on guitar for what is sure to be a fantastic trad session in Cleere’s.

When three such influential and creative musicians work together it creates a great excitement with followers of Irish music and this has been very evident with the number of people that have flocked to see their performances already over the past three years. The material performed is a mix between old and newly written music by the trio as well as a few songs by Dónal. Dónal Lunny is founding member of bands such as Planxty, The Bothy Band, Moving Hearts and Coolfin, all who have helped shape Irish music in an innovative way as only he can. He is probably the most respected and well known Irish musician of all time.

Pádraig Rynne is one of the most in demand musicians in Ireland at the moment. He is founding member of Guidewires and is involved in many ground-breaking projects of our modern era in Irish music. He is considered to be one of the trend setters in Irish music and is involved in many fusion projects. Sylvain Barou is Breton music’s finest. January 2012 saw the release of his first solo album and he is credited by many as having helped Breton music evolve in a new way. He has a number of recording credits to his name in various genres and has been working with the best known musicians in world music over the last number of years.
