n behalf of Karting Australia I would like to welcome everyone to the fIfth annual Race of Stars at the Xtreme Karting Complex in the lead up to the Vodafone Gold Coast 600. Over the past four years, this event has continually grown as it showcases not only the best drivers from all across Australia but also some of the best in the world. If the racing from the past few years are anything to go by, everyone is in for a real treat this weekend. Last year, a number of the finals were decided by less than a kartlength. The final of the KZ2 class is regarded by many as the best kart race they’ve ever seen with World Champion Paolo De Conto, David Forè and Marijn Kremers dicing it out. It was also a fantastic effort by young Gold Coaster

Tomas Gasperak to finish fourth. With all four of these drivers on track again this weekend in a KZ2 field that is full of Stars, I’m sure the racing will be just as good this year. We welcome everyone who has travelled to event. I hope you all enjoy the Race of Stars as well as some of the great sights that the Gold Coast region has to offer. During the past four years this event has been a real showcase for the sport of karting and generated a significant amount of interest throughout the motorsport community across Australia and also the karting community around the globe, I expect that this year will be no different. I would like to thank Ian Holm and his Xtreme Karting team for their continual support of the Race of Stars concept. Thank you also to

James Warburton and the staff at Supercars Australia and the many other supporters of this fantastic event. Karting is a sport that can be enjoyed by people of all ages, so if you like what you see here today, be sure to visit karting.net.au to find your local club and get on track.

Supercars Australia is again delighted to be a part of the process. Karting is a fantastic sport. One where kids learn the skills needed to forge a motorsport career, and also where professionals continue to sharpen their skills long after they’ve graduated from the junior ranks. Many of the current Supercars drivers continue to drive karts to keep their ‘race fitness’ between events, and several of them, including Bathurst 1000 winner Nick Percat, are here this weekend.

he Race of Stars is now a permanent fixture on the Vodafone Gold Coast 600 official off-track program, and an integral part of the build up to the big race weekend in Surfers Paradise.

Race of Stars is the first major event on the official off-track program, kicking off a big 10-days of action in the lead up to the Vodafone Gold Coast 600 next week.

It is a great event, displaying the future of motorsport. This is where most of the Supercars field got their start and develop the rivalries that last a lifetime – think Whincup vs Winterbottom and Mostert vs McLaughlin.

Supercars is delighted to again deliver the Gold Coast’s largest annual event, showing the world the amazing things this famous tourist strip has to offer. The iconic Vodafone Gold Coast 600 delivers around $40 million of

economic benefit to the City and the state and this year will bring some of the biggest music acts in the country to perform including Aussie Hip Hop icons the Hilltop Hoods, Brisbane rockers Violent Soho, Pop Princess Delta Goodrem and Daryl Braithwaite. After 27 years of racing and sensational stories, this event continues to deliver high-octane entertainment and excitement like few others. It will see the winners of the PIRTEK Enduro Cup crowned, after a battle that has run across the Wilson Security Sandown 500, Supercheap Auto Bathurst 1000 and the Vodafone Gold Coast 600. To everyone who has made the trip to the Gold Coast for Race of Stars and the Vodafone Gold Coast 600, I wish you a safe and fun time at one of Australia’s most iconic tourist destinations. Enjoy!

support crews who will no doubt enjoy the attractions of the Gold Coast during their stay. Karting has an enormous and growing level of support in the community and it is great to see the sport being showcased as part of a program of events that will contribute to the marketing of the sport as well as the Gold Coast as an exciting tourism destination. The Xtreme Karting Circuit here at Pimpama is very proud to be a participant in the off-track events for the Vodafone Gold Coast 600 to showcase karting at its best. Karting Australia has assembled an outstanding list of world class drivers in their respective classes and given our local and Australian champions the opportunity to race the world’s best. The racing in this world class event at our circuit will be outstanding and it is great to have the fans of Go Karting and the Motorsport community back at our circuit to enjoy the spectacle. I am continuing with my vision to build this facility into one that will cater for many forms of entry level motorsport. Once again this year the whole of the track will be utilized to its full potential for the enjoyment of drivers and spectators alike. To all drivers and teams good luck with your racing…. to the spectators I hope you enjoy this immensely exciting program of competition and the outstanding talent on show. CLASSES EXPLAINED

K

arting is a sport that caters for people, both men and women, of all ages. At this weekend’s Race of Stars event on the Gold Coast, seven of Karting Australia’s different classes will be in action. While drivers can start racing as young as seven years of age in the Cadet 9 class, the youngest drivers on track this weekend will be those in the Cadet 12 class. In this class drivers aged between nine and 12 years of age are powered by a 60cc Vortex Mini Rok engine on a chassis fitted with a Bridgestone JYL tyre. The next step in the karting pyramid is the KA4 Junior class. This is for drivers between 12 and 16 years of age. The Class uses the IAME KA100 engine, fitted with an exhaust restrictor reducing the maximum output to approximately 13 horsepower. After gaining the necessary licencing endorsements, youngsters may opt to move into the more powerful

KA3 Junior class. Using the same IAME KA100 engine, but with the exhaust restrictor removed allowing the engine to produce approximately 22 horsepower. Drivers in the KA3 Junior class use the controlled Dunlop DFM (medium compound) tyres. The elite junior class in Australian karting is KA2. Using the high-powered water-cooled 125cc Vortex DVS-Junior powerplant on a chassis fitted with Dunlop DFM tyres. Drivers in this class, aged between 13 and 16 years old, are expected to reach speeds in excess of 120 km/h this weekend. The traditional entry-level class for Senior competitors is KA3 Senio. All characteristics in this Senior class are the same as the KA3 Junior class, the only exception is the minimum driver and kart weight that increases from 144kg at a Junior level to 159kg at a Senior Championship level.

TECH INFO Cadet 12 The mid-range Senior class in terms of performance is the TaG 125 class. It is in this class where spectators will witness a variety of homologated 125cc watercooled engines such as the Rotax, IAME X30 and PRD Galaxy. All three engines produce similar overall horsepower of approximately 28hp, however, the delivery characteristics of this power is different between the various makes producing some very exciting racing. The pinnacle in the world of karting is the KZ Gearbox class. With six-speed water-cooled 125cc engines producing approximately 44 horsepower, the elite drivers in this class will reach speeds in excess of 160km/h around the 1690m Xtreme Karting Complex this weekend on board their chassis fitted with the MG FZ-Prime tyres.

HONOURING JIM MORTON The Race of Stars remembers one of Australia’s leading motorsport mentors Australian drivers in the KZ2 class at the Race of Stars be battling for a new honour in the annual event - the Jim Morton Perpetual trophy presented by Castrol EDGE. The trophy will have the name of the highest placed Australian in the international KZ2 field etched on it each year. Morton, who lost his battle with aggressive cancer, Mesothelioma, in December 2014, was responsible for providing a start to some of this country’s biggest names through his karting and Supercars development teams including James Courtney, Ryan Briscoe, Mark Winterbottom, Jason Bright, Michael Caruso, Warren Luff, Alan Gurr, James Gurr, Adam Clarke and Adam Graham. Morton was the original DAP kart importer in the 1980s with drivers Tim Pauling and Ben Horstmann. He then set up the successful Castrolbacked Tony Kart operation which set a new benchmark in Australian karting and which was the breeding ground for some of this country’s greats. 2010 Virgin Australia Supercars champion, exF1 test driver and current Walkinshaw Racing star, Courtney won his junior karting world championship in 1995 under Morton’s watch before winning his world senior title in 1997, setting him up to chase his F1 dream. “Jim played a massive role in my career, especially in the early stages,” said Courtney. “More than that he remained a terrific mate through my entire career. “I was massively close to “Morto”. He was really one of the unsung heroes of Australian

12 - RACE OF STARS

motorsport in the role he played helping so many young kids. “He was genuinely one of the world’s best guys – a really good man and you can’t ask for more than that.” Another who had one of the closest relationships with Morton is current Nissan Supercar driver Michael Caruso. Caruso started his karting career with Morton and maintained a place under his wing before a couple of seasons in his Decina Development Series team in 2006 (4th) and 2007 (2nd). Ironically, Jim’s wife Janelle taught Caruso hospitality at high school. “Jim basically gave me my start, not only in karts, but particularly V8 Supercars with the Development Series ride for a couple of seasons,” said Caruso. “He mentored me in so many areas and really just wanted me to live my dream. “Jim and my father (Mick) were good mates and that really formed a great relationship between the two families. “I cannot tell you how grateful I am for everything he did for me.” Morton also provided a great opportunity for one of Australia’s most success female racers in Leanne Tander (nee Ferrier). The top placed Australians in the KZ2 class over the past four Race of Stars events have been Chris Hays (2014 - 1st, 2015 - 6th), Kyle Ensbey (2015 - 3rd) and Tomas Gasperak (2016 - 4th).

GIRL POWER

M

otorsport has been long considered as a maledominated sport, however, it is continually becoming the scene where more young females are lining up on

the grid.

At this weekend’s Race of Stars no less than a dozen female drivers will be suiting up. After last year being one of the front runners in the KA3 Senior class, Beck Connell has got her sights set on becoming the first female to take home a winner’s surfboard in 2017. Connell will be joined on the grid in the KA3 Senior class by Brisbane’s Briann Moyse. New Zealand sisters, Ashleigh and Madeline Stewart have been regular visitors to Australia over the past couple of years. This weekend Ashleigh is competing in the highly competitive TaG 125 class while Madeline will tackle the world’s best in the elite KZ2 class. Third-generation racer Alice Buckley is one of three girls in the Cadet 12 class where she will be joined by Summer Allen and Maddison Feather. Proving the sport isn’t not just for the young girls is mother of two Barbara Anagnostiadis. Having raced in her teenage years against the likes of Mark Winterbottom and Jamie Whincup, Anagnostiadis returned to the sport two years ago to enjoy it with her young family. She will compete in the TaG 125 class this weekend. Gold Coast’s Taylah Agius is really beginning to make her mark at the top level of junior karting in Australia. Two weeks ago she was crowned Queensland Champion. Agius is a part of the JC Kart team and she recently gained backing from Boost Mobile. Next month, she will make her international debut at the SKUSA SuperNationals in Las Vegas, America. Joining Agius on the grid in the KA3 Junior class is New South Wales driver Amy Woods. Agius should be a front-runner in this class this weekend. Agius will also be competing in the elite KA2 class. Two young female racers will be competing in the KA4 Junior class with Victoria Lopes and Jacinta Hoey taking to the circuit in the 31-kart field. 2017 RACE OF STARS - 15

GETTING STARTED K

art Racing is a sport that can be enjoyed by people of all ages, it’s not just for the youngsters but also fothe young at heart. Karting Australia licence holders range from as young as six to the oldest current member being 81 years of age. For Cadets and Juniors, Karting Australia has the SP Tools Junior Sprockets Program to provide the opportunity to experience the thrill and excitement of driving an authentic racing kart in a safe and controlled environment.

16 - 2017 RACE OF STARS

Under the expert tuition of seventime Australian Karting Champion Troy Hunt and his experienced instructors, each participant will progress through a series of activity stations where they will learn the basics of karting. The structured program operates in the School Holiday periods across the country. The 2018 dates will be announced on karting.net.au in the near future. For children who are already involved in the sport, Karting Australia recently announced the introduction of the SP Tools Sprockets PLUS program. This is designed for those children that are actively involved in the sport and understand the basics of karting. The program has been specifically tailored to focus on driving techniques and race craft to provide current licence holders with a boost in their racing.

The Bring A Mate Program allows Licence Holders to ‘Bring a Mate’ to try the sport of karting. The program is open to women and men, girls and boys so long as they are in the year of their12th birthday or older. ‘Bring a Mate’ is a demonstration experience that can be hosted by any Karting Australia Club across the Country.

PAOLO DE CONTO 2016 and 2017 World Champion

EURO STARS T

he 2017 Race of Stars will feature some of the biggest names in the world of karting. Italian Paolo De Conto has been almost unstoppable throughout the past 18 months. After claiming his maiden World Championship last September, De Conto has been on an incredible roll that has seen him win in Australia, America and all acorss Europe. His most recent victory was successfully defending his World Championship last month in Germany. 18 - 2017 RACE OF STARS

While there’s little denying the fact that De Conto is the best of the current crop, his fellow Italian Davide Forè is considered by many as the ‘Greatest of All Time’. With four World Championships and a World Cup victory, Forè has enjoyed a stellar career that has spanned three decades at the highest level. Now in the twilight of his career, Forè continues to show his prowess on kart tracks all around the world. Dutchman Marijn Kremers has been a revelation on the world

karting scene throughout 2017. After spending last year based in Australia, Kremers has spearheaded the BirelART factory team’s resurgennce to the pointy end of the field in the elite KZ class throughout Europe. Kremers is joined in the Patrizicorse outfit this weekend by former European Champion Rick Dreezen and New Zealand star Dylan Drysdale. Making his first Australian appearance this week is Swedish Joel Johansson who joins Tom Williamson Motorsport.

Davide Forè returns to Australia to chase his third Winner’s Surfboard at the Race of Stars this weekend.

Dutchman Mairjn Kremers has finished runner-up for the past two years at the Race of Stars. Following on from a strong European campaign, he’s got his sights set on the top step of the podium at the Race of Stars

HOT LAP T

he Xtreme Karting Complex is one of the fastest karting facilities in the world with the drivers in the elite KZ2 Gearbox class reaching speeds in excess of 160km/h. Victorian teenager Aaron Cameron upstaged a highly credentialed field at last year’s event to qualify on pole position. His lap time of 56.254 seconds saw him average 108.15km/h around the 1690-metre layout. A hot lap aboard a KZ2 kart will see the front running drivers hit 166km/h as they turn into the

sweeper at the end of the main straight. The slowest corner on the circuit, turn two, sees the karts drop to 42km/h in second gear before hitting 125km/h entering turn 4. Along the back section of the circuit they will reach speeds in excess of 130km/h before dropping to 40 through turn 9. They will negotiate the final turn at a speed of 50km/h in third gear before going full noise along what is understood to be the longest straight in the world of karting.

2017 RACE OF STARS - 29

LOOKING BACK

2016 - Dazzling De Conto

2015 - Fore’s Emotional win

Recently crowned World KZ Champion Paolo De Conto made his first visit to Australia a successful one with victory in the KZ2 class at the 2016 Race of Stars following an epic battle with fellow internationals Davide Fore and Marijn Kremers. Brendan Nelson was the star of the show in the TaG 125 class while HDR Arrow Karts’ Declan Fraser won his team’s first surfboard in KA3 Senior. Ricciardo Kart’s Jace Matthews won the drag race to the chequered flag in KA2 by 0.03 seconds while his younger brother Declan won KA3 Junior. After coming close the year prior, Josh Smith won KA4 Junior as Adrian Haak made a last lap pass on Blake Purdie for the Cadet 12 win.

CRG driver Davide Forè overcame a heavy heart and a serious challenge from local driver Kyle Ensbey to secure a back-to-back victories in the KZ2 class in 2015. In the elite junior category, Oscar Piastri was the first driver home. Emerald’s Ben Finch took an emotional victory in the hard fought TaG 125 class. Thomas Davies was able to get the run on the front straightaway for the final time to eclipse Shamick Racing’s Joshua Smith and Tyler Everingham in KA4 Junior. Cadet 12 delivered a tight finish between Jay Hanson and Kiwi Connor Davison. Davison pushed Hanson right to the line, the margin of victory just 0.026. In KA3 Senior, Bundaberg racer James Litzow was victorious after a last lap pass on James Adams.

2014 - Dominant Davide In his first competition on Australian soil in almost 20 years, Davide Forè qualified fastest, won all three heats at the 2014 Race of Stars and crossed the line first in the final. New Zealander Daniel Bray finished second ahead of Italian Lorenzo Camplese. Queenslander Cian Fothergill won the TaG 125 class in dominant fashion. Cody Brewczynski led an all New South Wales podium in Junior National after a hard fought battle with Jack Winter. Cooper Webster claimed the Cadets victory after Bayley Douglas was handed a penalty for a last corner incident. 30 - 2017 RACE OF STARS

2013 - Local Hero Gold Coast’s Chris Hays dominate the inaugural Race of Stars event in 2013. Hay both heat races before taking the KZ2 final ahead of Joey Hanssen and Kel Treseder. Bundaberg’s Troy Loeskow won the Pro Light (KF) category while Andrew Kahl was victorious in Pro Junior (KF3). Ben Stewart won TaG 125 after a remarkable final as Will Brown won Junior National and Benito Montalbano Cadets.
