elcome to the opening round of the 2018 SP Tools Australian Kart Championship, presented by Castrol EDGE at the Monarto Karting Complex in South Australia.
It’s great to see almost 300 competitors assembled for the opening round of what promises to be an amazing year for the Australian Kart Championship. When I look back on the past three years of the Championship, it provides myself and the Board of Karting Australia with a significant amount of pride that the Karting Australia staff, hard-working volunteers, host clubs, members of the karting industry, drivers and teams have all worked together to elevate the standard of the sport in this country. Recently, we announced SP Tools as the title sponsor for the Australian Kart Championship. It’s a pleasure to have such a fantastic company join alongside long-term presenting partner Castrol EDGE for the Championship in a multi-year arrangement. Over the past few years, the Australian Kart Championship has developed into a very significant competition on the Australian motorsport scene – both from a talent and commercial perspective. We’re thrilled that Kevin Davis and the team at SP Tools have recognised this, and have expanded their partnership with Karting Australia. Alongside SP Tools and Castrol EDGE, the Championship is supported by Mercedes-Benz Vans, Bridgestone, Dunlop, IAME, MG Tyres and Vortex engines. ABOUT THE SP TOOLS AUSTRALIAN KART CHAMPIONSHIP The five-round SP Tools Australian Kart Championship, presented by Castrol EDGE is the highest level of karting competition in Australia. There are nine classes vying for National honours in the Championship across various age divisions. In the underage divisions, drivers compete in the Cadet 9, Cadet 12, KA4 Junior and elite KA2 class using the Vortex Mini Rok, IAME KA100 Reedjet and Vortex DVS-J engines. Senior competitors have the selection of five classes – three Classes that have a pathway from the Club, Zonal and State-level Compeittion (KA3 Senior, TaG 125 and X30) and two high-powered elite Classes (KA1 and KZ2). The 2018 Championship begins this weekend at the Monarto Karting Complex located just outside of Murray Bridge in South Australia. Round two of the Championship will be contested in Albury for the first time before the teams heads to Newcastle to mark the halfway point in the Championship on May 25-27. The penultimate round will be contested in Central Queensland on July 27-29. The Go-Kart Club of Victoria will host the Grand Final at

the Port Melbourne Karting Complex on August 31 – September 2. Over the years, the Port Melbourne venue has been the scene of some of the most memorable races in Australian karting and 2018 will see the Australian Kart Champions decided at the venue. Round 1 - February 23-25

NEWS FROM THE PADDOCK Aaron Cameron and Macauley Jones (pictured) are set for a couple of big weekends in South Australia. The pair will both line-up in the elite KZ2 Gearbox category this weekend at Monarto before competing as a part of the Adelaide 500 event next weekend. Cameron will be one of the inaugural competitors in the SuperUtes Seires while Jones will contest the opening round of the Dunlop Super 2 Series.
Reigning KA4 Australian Champion Jay Hanson is a major inclusion in the AWC Motorsport Academy outfit for 2018 as he makes the progression into the elite junior Class – KA2. Hanson will be joined on the KA2 grid by rising Tasmanian junior Callum Bishop. The Tasmanian-based team will field a total of seven drivers across a variety of classes including Lochie Dalton in the elite KA1 class, Tasmanian Champion Alistair Lee, Dean O’Brien, Fletcher Bellars and Zane Wyatt.

otorsport has been long considered as a maledominated sport, however, it is continually becoming the scene where more females are lining up on the grid. At this weekend’s opening round of the 2018 SP Tools Australian Kart Championship, no less than 16 female drivers will be suiting up. Gold Coast’s Taylah Agius will be one of three females in the elite KA1 Class - joining her is Victorian Olivia DallaZuanna and Kiwi Rianna O’Meara-Hunt. Agius’ fellow Queenslander Annabelle Rolfo will compete in the KA4 Junior Class. Local driver Amber Miller will make her debut in the elite junior class - KA2. Miller and Canberra’s Mia Bolton will be battling against the top junior drivers in the country. Beck Connell has been a contender in the KA3 Senior Class for the past few years, where this weekend she will be joined by local drivers Tayla Heath and Nikki Watson. New Zealand sisters, Ashleigh and Madeline Stewart have been regular visitors to Australia over the past couple of years. This weekend Ashleigh is competing in the highly competitive X30 class while Madeline will tackle the Australia’s best in the elite KZ2 class. Third-generation racer Alice Buckley is one of three girls in the Cadet 12 class where she will be joined by fellow Queenslander Maddie Feather and Victorian Aiva Anagnostiadis. Proving the sport isn’t not just for the young girls is mother of two Barbara Anagnostiadis. She will compete in the TaG 125 class this weekend, along with Sharnay Seal. All of the female drivers will be battling for a new award in 2018 - the Australia Kart Championship Ladies Trophy.

2010 Supercars and dual world karting champion James Courtney echoes Winterbottom’s thoughts. “Karting is where we all developed our craft, I look back on my karting days very fondly which is why I’m still involved now through my JC Kart brand,” said Courtney. “Looking up and down pit lane these days there are so many people you know from such a young age. I remember a few years ago it was myself, Mark (Winterbottom) and (Michael) Caruso on the Supercars podium in Sydney. I’d be confident in saying that there would be a picture somewhere of us in the exact same order from a Club Day at the Combined Districts Kart Club in the 1990s.”
