CHAIRMAN’S MESSAGE O
n behalf of Karting Australia I would like to welcome everyone here to Ipswich for the penultimate round of the 2016 Australian Kart Championship presented by Jayco and Castrol EDGE. Along with our regular drivers and teams a special welcome goes out to our visiting drivers and their families from Singapore along with BirelART President Ronni Sala and one of his factory drivers Jordon Lennox-Lamb. Over the years there has been some fantastic races been contested here at the Ipswich venue and I’d expect this weekend to be no different as the chase for the Championships continue to heat up. With the points leaders in five of the nine classes have less than a 25 point lead every point is going to be valuable across the remaining two rounds. The tightest championship battle appears as though it will come from our youngest class – Cadet 9 where a single point separates Ryan Tomsett and Alex Ninovic at the top of the standings. In the corresponding round last year, local driver Nicholas Andrews was impressive on his way to victory in the TaG 125 class, until this point no-one has been able to stop Brendan Nelson from taking three straight victories in the class during 2016 – maybe Andrews could be the one to put an end to Nelson’s winning run on his home track. That will be just one of many intriguing battles that will be played out this weekend. I wish all Competitors and Teams the best of luck across the weekend and look forward to seeing the podium finishers enjoying the spoils of success on Sunday afternoon.

KREMERS LEADS PATRIZICORSE TRIFECTA
D
utchman Marijn Kremers broke through for his maiden victory in Australia by leading home a Patrizcorse trifecta at Round Three of the Australian Kart Championship presented by Jayco and Castrol EDGE in South Australia. Kremers led home a Patirizcorse team trifecta in the KZ2 final with Troy Loeskow and Chris Hays joining the Ricciardo Kart pilot on the podium. It is he first time in the history of the Championship that three drivers from the same team have filled the podium. After moving into the lead on the opening lap Kremers was never headed in the main event before crossing the line almost two seconds clear of Loeskow. Kremers set the pace for the majority of the weekend in the X30 class only to be led across the line by Leigh Nicolaou in the final. A post-race driving infringement penalty for Nicolaou handed the win to Kremers ahead of Zac Soutar and Adam Lindstrom with Nicolaou classified fourth. “It has been an incredible weekend. I was struggling for speed in practice in the KZ2 class but we continually worked hard at improving my speed and came away with the win,” said Kremers. “To have three Parizicorse drivers on the podium is just amazing. I’m so happy for everyone in the team. “After trying so hard over the past two years to get a win in Australia, it is a great feeling to finally break through for a win.” For much of the KZ2 final New Zealand driver Ryan Grant appeared to fly in the ointment for the Ricciardo team having slotted into second place. However, a misfire would end his run towards his second podium finish in 2016.
Canberra teenager Joshua Fife set the pace in the early part of the weekend but a mechanical issue and an engine failure at high speed while leading the final two heat races dropped him down the starting grid for the final. He would eventually finish 11th. Gold Coast teenager Jack Doohan moved to the top of the Championship standings in the KA2 class with a faultless display in Monarto. After dominating the qualifying race action the Red Bull-backed driver was pressured by Damon Papasergio in the final before holding on for his second straight victory. Papsergio finished second ahead of Harrison Hoey. Local driver Ben Delaney was one of the front runners in the KA3 Senior class across the weekend. After enjoying victory in the final heat race, he then showed his opposition a clean pair of heels in the final to cross the line first ahead of Cody Donald and Matthew McLean. Following a strong showing at the previous round in Puckapunyal, Shamick Racing youngster Harry Arnett continued his improvement this weekend in Monarto to battle for the Cadet 9 victory. Arnett grabbed the lead from the outside front row at the start of the final before Alex Ninovic fought back to reclaimed the lead a handful of laps later. The duo then raced nose to tail for several laps before Arnett fought back at half race distance and edged away for the victory. Jay Hanson, Beau Harris and Joashua Smith enjoyed a three way battle in the KA4 Junior final before Hanson held on for the win. Queenslander Brendan Nelson secured his third consecutive round win in the TaG 125 class aboard his FA Kart. After dominating the qualifying races Nelson

opened a handy buffer over the Joshua Car in the early laps of the final. Car closed in late in the race to pressure Nelson but was unable to find a way past the Championship leader and had to settle for second place. Shamick Racing’s Kai Allen was nothing short of dominant all across the weekend in the Cadet 12 class. Allen won every race across the weekend and crossed the line 4.7 seconds clear of Fletcher Harris in the final. Local driver Blake Purdie crossed the line third after an intense battle late in the race. Purdie did however receive a post-race penalty elevating his Zanardi Corse Australia team-mate Christian Cowie onto the podium.

FOR THE LOVE OF KARTING For anyone that has spent any time with, or around, Michael Patrizi they would very quickly realise that he is one of the most passionate people going around in motorsport. Whether it is himself or one of his drivers behind the wheel Patrizi always wears his heart on his sleeve. It is this passion that has driven Patrizi to success both on and off the circuit.
DURING his karting career in the nineties and early 2000s Patrizi was one of the frontrunners in the sport having secured an Australian Championship and finished runner-up at the World Cup event in Japan. He also spent several years driving for the factory Birel team in Italy. He then went on to compete successfully in open wheel racing on three continents including the FIA F3 Euro Series, Champ Car Atlantic in the USA, Formula BMW in both Asia and the UK. He also undertook testing duties aboard GP2 and World Series by Renault Machines before returning to Australia where he contested both the Porsche Carrera Cup Series and V8 Supercar Championship for several years. The proud Western Australian, who now resides on the Gold Coast, leads the Patrizicorse team in the Australian Kart Championship with the Birel ART and Ricciardo Kart brands. “I enjoy karting more than most, it’s a big passion of mine and I believe some of Australia’s best motor racing drivers are competing in the Australian Kart Championship,” said Patrizi. “Patrizicorse is my project which allows me to provide some fantastic opportunities for young drivers who are looking to make a career in motorsport. “I get as much satisfaction and thrill from being a team owner and driver mentor for my younger drivers as I did when I was competing myself. “Courtesy of my links with the BirelART factory and the Ricciardo Kart brand we have some great initiatives this year that will see some of our top drivers here in Australia be provided with opportunities never seen before in this country.” Fresh from a one-two-three finish in the KZ2 class at the most recent round in Monarto, added to Chris Hays’ victory in the opening event of the year, the Patrizicorse team is getting some good results on the board in this year’s Championship. Three top line drivers from Singapore – Jayden Jin, Yeo Hong Yang and Ethan Goodman - along with former KZ2 World Cup Champion Jordon Lennox-Lamb will add further depth to the Patrizicorse outfit this weekend. “We’ve enjoyed a great start to the year, to get the first ever KZ2 win for BirelART in Australia at Round One and then back it up for a one-two-three last round, the first time it has ever been done, has been incredible,” said Patrizi. “I’m very excited about the weekend in Ipswich. Some very talented drivers from Singapore along with BirelART factory driver Jordon Lennox-Lamb and BirelART President Ronni Sala will be joining us. It is the first time that Mr Sala has attended an Australian Kart Championship event, we are looking forward to putting on a great event and provide them with some more fantastic results.” While his days of a professional driver at the highest level of motorsport may be behind him, there’s little doubt that Patrizi’s passion will continue to live on for many years to come through his team and drivers.

hat started as a dream for a kid has turned out to be a reality for Harrington Doyle Racing Arrow Karts’ Craig Doyle. As a youngster, Doyle repainted many of his Matchbox cars to be the same colour as his Father’s Team of Speedway Saloon Cars. He dreamed of one day running his own racing team, something he is now doing as a part of the Australian Kart Championship. “From a young age I’d always been involved in motorsport. Both of my parents, Aunty and Uncle all raced speedway when I was much younger and I was there week after week watching them or sleeping in the back of our HQ station wagon at the track,” reflected Doyle. “While I raced motocross and flat track for much of my youth, I always had four wheels in mind for the future. I dabbled in Karting in the mid 1980’s, before turning to Speedway sedans and then later, 450cc Microsprints (small Sprintcars). My first home mortgage quickly took over my budget in the mid 1990’s and I turned back into being an online motorsport fan for quite a while.” Doyle had very little to do with motorsport for more than a decade while focusing on his accounting
career, but when the time felt right he re-acquainted himself with Karting. He first brought a Kart for himself, but soon after he also offered to field a Kart for his young neighbour David Gledhill ultimately forming a small team, which has evolved over time and is now the Harrington Doyle Racing Arrow Karts outfit. This year the team is celebrating ten years in the sport, and the Ipswich home round is planned to be an exceptionally special event for reuniting the Team, its Partners and supporters. “It’s kind of ironic really, I just started Karting to have some fun for myself and to get my motorsport fix, then the opportunity came to be able to give David his first chance to race and the team was ‘formed’,” added Doyle. “We then bought another kart and co-opted another neighbour, Travis Edwards to join up. We couldn’t get the Karts sorted properly from a handling perspective, which is when we started to work with Gary, James and Matt Greenwood and ultimately also brought them in as part of our Team. “Over the past ten years we’ve had a total of 27 individual drivers as a part of the team. We’ve always maintained great ongoing relationships with many of these drivers and their families
throughout the years, long after they have moved on to other forms of racing.” Doyle and Co-Team Principal Dean Harrington clearly understand the fact that presentation and professionalism are just as important as being fast on the race track – especially when you’ve got national and international companies as corporate partners as they do. “I was always big fan of Mark Larkham and took note of how his longtime sponsor Orrcon Steel leveraged its involvement in his team and the V8 Supercars Championship,” said Doyle. “It was not always just about results on the track; knowing that they are very important to being successful, however, it’s also about the relationships and opportunities you create for your corporate partners and how they can leverage their involvement with our team. “Stewart Smith, who managed Orrcon Steel’s sponsorship program for 11 years, was an inspiration to our team in this regard. He took that particular sponsorship platform to an amazing level and we’ve always tried within in our budget to mimic that model where we could.
10 YEARS
“As a team in the Australian Kart Championship we understand it is the pinnacle of our sport and it is the product that is marketed to the outside world. We simply do our best on every occasion to professionally represent the sport and be good ambassadors, always wanting to help it grow. To be recognised with the Best Presented Team Award in 2012 and again last year was very humbling.” While many others who own a racing team would probably look at their next step challenge to be Formula 4 and then maybe Dunlop Series Supercars, Doyle says that Karting is where his team will always stay. “We’re involved in Karting because we love the friendships, Harrington Doyle Raccing Arrow Karts Team Principals Dean Harrington (left) and Craig Doyle (right) it’s affordably within our budget, it’s accessible around our work the upside of the next rise. It’s certainly the best category commitments and schedules, you can be competitive with and way for us to help young people to be actively involved in equipment that’s off the shelf and you’re not continually trying motorsport.” to re-engineer the world,” said Doyle. Harrington Doyle Racing will field eight drivers this “We have absolutely no aspirations beyond Karting; as it weekend with reigning Aus #2 Scotty Sorensen (KA1) leading has got everything that we want and plenty of challenges the Team of Dunlop Series Supercars driver Todd Hazelwood still yet to be achieved – both for us personally and for our (KA1), Townsville Flyer Luke Flynn (KA1), Brenton Simonds corporate partners. THE NEED FORSPEED T
roy Hunt is one of Australia’s accomplished kart racers, he’s raced against – and defeated – some of the best drivers this country has ever produced. During the early nineties Hunt honed his skills on circuits throughout New South Wales before bursting on the National scene with victory in the 1996 National Championship. He would then go on to secure six more throughout his career – his last coming in 2007. In his time at the top of karting as a driver Hunt competed in Formula Super A, one of only six Australians to ever do so, with the Top Kart factory team in the European and CIK FIA World Championships. During his first year Lewis Hamilton was his team-mate, later he would become opposition along with six other drivers that are now or have previously competed in Formula One. For the past 17 years Hunt has been sharing his knowledge of karting through the Top Gun Racing Academy with success both in karting and many other forms of motorsport. “When I was racing I had some great people around me that I was able to learn from, which is why I developed the Top Gun Racing Academy,” said Hunt. “Over the years I’ve worked with some amazing young talents, many of them have not only succeeded in karting but also circuit racing. “When I look at some of the names that I’ve worked with and where they are now it gives me a great sense of accomplishment to know that I have been able to share my knowledge with them.” Some of the drivers who have received tutorage from Hunt throughout the years have included Formula 1 driver Daniel Ricciardo, Supercar driver Tim Slade, GT Asia driver Jonathan Venter, current Australian Formula 4 Champion Jordan Lloyd, USA Pro Mazda competitor Jake Parsons along with Australian GT Championship competitors Nathan Antunes and Tony Walls. These are all in addition with the hundreds of young kart racers that Hunt has assisted to develop their skills. “It gives me a great sense of accomplishment to see people improve themselves after I have shared my knowledge and experience with them. This can be in various ways depending on the level of competitor and the goals in their racing,” said Hunt. “Many of my most satisfying moments have come not from seeing one of my drivers with a Championship on the big stage but from seeing the smiles on their faces after they’ve simply improved on their personal best or won their first race. When asked about the best racer he’s ever competing against, seen compete or tutored, Hunt indicated that it was difficult to pick just one. “It’s hard to single out one driver. I was lucky enough to race against so many world class drivers throughout my career,” said Hunt. “In Australia I was lucky to race against and have many great battles with drivers like Winterbottom, Courtney and Briscoe and in Europe it was guys like Lewis Hamilton, Robert Kubica, Alessandro Manetti and Davide Forè. “I respected all those drivers but one thing they all share is their relentless determination to be the best. This is something that I focus on with all of my drivers today – to be the best they can be every time they race.” A total of ten drivers will take to the Ipswich circuit under the Top Gun Racing Academy banner this weekend.
