O
n behalf of Karting Australia I would like to welcome everyone to the fourth annual Race of Stars at the Gold Coast Motorsport Training Centre as a part of SuperFest surrounding the Castrol Gold Coast
600. Over the past three years, this event has showcased not only the best drivers from all across Australia but also some of the best in the world. If last year’s racing is anything to go by, we’re in for a real treat this weekend. Last year, a number of the finals were decided by less than a kartlength. With David Forè back to try and make it three straight wins and the current World Champion Paolo De Conto also here, along with the best in Australia, I’m sure the racing will be great. We welcome everyone who has travelled to event. I hope you all enjoy the Race of Stars as well as some of the great sights that the Gold Coast region has to offer. During the past three years this event has been a real showcase for the sport of karting and generated a significant amount of interest throughout the motorsport community across Australia and also the karting community around the globe, I expect that this year will be no different. I would like to thank Ian Holm and his Xtreme Karting team for their continual support the Race of Stars concept, in addition to the Queensland Government, Gold Coast City Council, Supercars and the many supporters of this fantastic event. Karting is a sport that can be enjoyed by people of all ages, so if you like what you see here today, be sure to visit karting.net.au to find your local club and get on track. T
he Gold Coast Motorsport Training Centre…… home of Xtreme Karting welcomes competitors and spectators from all over the world and Australia to the 2016 “Race of Stars” here at Pimpama on Queensland’s beautiful Gold Coast. This is our fourth year as the host circuit for this fantastic unique and spectacular Karting event. The “Race of Stars” has grown to be an integral part of SuperFest in the lead up to the V8 Supercars Gold Coast 600. Past events in 2014/2015 were extraordinary successes and this year the 2016 competition will build on that solid foundation. Current World Champion Paolo De Conto will race against two-time Race of Stars and former World Champion Davide Fore along with a galaxy of karting superstars to deliver three days of excitement plus. This will be the first time in 20 years a reigning World Champion has competed in Australia. The “Race of Stars” has built a reputation as Australia’s Number 1 International Karting event attracting crowds in excess of 5000 people showcasing International and Australian
karting talent. Congratulations to Karting Australia as organisers of the event and the V8 Supercars organization for including the “Race of Stars” as a feature of SuperFest in the lead up to the Gold Coast 600. Thank you also to the Gold Coast City Council for again giving special dispensation for the event to take place. The international reputation this event has built along with the obvious economic benefits to local business on the Gold Coast are hard to ignore. This year we will see the largest number of competitors racing cheered on by their families and support crews who will no doubt enjoy the attractions of the Gold Coast during their stay. Go Karting has an enormous and growing level of support in the community and it is great to see the sport being showcased as part of a program of events that will contribute to the marketing of the sport as well as the Gold Coast as an exciting tourism destination. The Xtreme Karting Circuit here at Pimpama is very proud to be a participant in SuperFest to showcase karting at its best. Karting Australia has assembled an outstanding list of world class drivers in their respective classes and given our local and Australian champions the opportunity to race the world’s best. The racing in this world class event at our circuit will be outstanding and it is
great to have the fans of Go Karting and the Motorsport community back at our circuit to enjoy the spectacle. I am continuing with my vision to build this facility into one that will cater for many forms of entry level motorsport. Once again this year the whole of the track will be utilized to its full potential for the enjoyment of drivers and spectators alike. Facilities such as this are becoming harder to realize as vocal minorities continue to harass local government. Junior training programs are a must to develop the many young people who have an interest in motorsport. Facilities and training programs effectively delivered at locations such as ours make for a much safer community. Without these type of facilities the young motorsport talent of Australia will find it difficult to explore their full potential having to travel overseas to train and compete. To all drivers and teams good luck with your racing….to the spectators I hope you enjoy this immensely exciting program of competition and the outstanding talent on show. I hope to see you back at the track in one of our karts sometime soon. To our neighbours who support the facility thank you for your support and ongoing assistance it is very much appreciated. Ian Holm Owner – Gold Coast Motorsport Training Centre
T
he Race of Stars is now a permanent fixture on the Castrol Gold Coast 600 SuperFest program, and an integral part of the build up to the big race weekend in Surfers Paradise. It is a great event, displaying the future of motorsport. This is where most of the Supercars field got their start and develop the rivalries that last a lifetime – think Whincup vs Winterbottom and Mostert vs McLaughlin, Supercars Australia is again delighted to be a part of the process. Karting is a fantastic sport. One where kids learn the skills needed to forge a motorsport career, and also where professionals continue to sharpen their skills long after they’ve graduated from the junior ranks. Many of the current Supercars drivers continue to drive karts to keep their ‘race fitness’ between events, and several of them are here this weekend. Race of Stars is the first major event on the SuperFest program, kicking off a big 10-days of action
in the lead up to the Castrol Gold Coast 600 next week. Supercars is delighted to again deliver the Gold Coast’s largest annual event, showing the world the amazing things this famous tourist strip has to offer. The iconic Castrol Gold Coast 600 delivers around $40 million of economic benefit to the City and the state. After a quarter century of racing and sensational stories, this event continues to deliver high-octane entertainment and excitement like few others. It will see the winners of the PIRTEK Enduro Cup crowned, after a battle that has run across the Wilson Security Sandown 500, Supercheap Auto Bathurst 1000 and the Castrol Gold Coast 600. To everyone who has made the trip to the Gold Coast for Race of Stars and the Castrol Gold Coast 600, I wish you a safe and fun time at one of Australia’s most iconic tourist destinations.Enjoy! DAVIDE WINS AFTER EPIC BATTLE

F
ive-time World Karting Champion, Davide Forè added a second Winners Surfboard from the Race of Stars to his extensive trophy collection after an epic race last October. Qualifying for the final on pole by virtue of his heat race finishes, Fore was stunned by his CRG team-mate Kyle Ensbey who made the best of the outside front row to take the lead in the early running. The icon of world karting then chipped away staging a number of thrilling side-by-side attempts to get past Ensbey into turn one in excess of 160 kilometres per hour. The gritty Queenslander hung tough though and was able to hold the lead until three laps remaining in the final, when the Italian superstar made the decisive move. Ensbey was pushing on attempting to stage a last lap lunge on his team-mate, however didn’t take into account Ricciardo Kart youngster, Marijn Kremers. The 17-yearold from The Netherlands surprised Ensbey with a move with one corner left to go. He worked his way forward from 12th on the grid. A devastated Fore dedicated his victory to his ‘Nonna’ who passed away on Friday, the 41-year-old returning to Italy within hours of the event finishing. “I cannot thank the team enough for keeping me motivated and ensuring my focus on this race,” said Fore. “It has been a very tough weekend for me, but I am so happy to have got the second Race of Stars win here, it has been a wonderful weekend for CRG here in Australia. I dedicate this race to my Nonna, who I love very much and she has always pushed my career.”
Jason Faint crossed the line fourth ahead of Jaie Robson (CRG), who earlier in the day blew an engine, and inaugural Race of Stars Champion, Chris Hays. In the elite junior category, KF3 Victorian Oscar Piastri was the first driver home. The FA Kart driver had a hard fought three way battle with Queenslander Joshua Rogers and Aaron Cameron, who, like Piastri has been racing in the European KF3 Championships this year. Piastri narrowly led Rogers (Kosmic) across the line, just a tenth of a second splitting the pair. Cameron (Kosmic) was third with Broc Feeney having his best KF3 race in fourth and Flynn Jakes an exceptional fifth. Emerald, Queensland based racer, Benjamin Finch took an emotional victory in the hard fought KA TaG class. It was his first major event victory that he dedicated to his father who passed away last year. It was a tough battle that also included Chris Farkas (Tony Kart) and at times, pole-sitter, Jack Black (Exprit). Harrington Doyle Arrow driver, Luke Flynn worked his way forward to be on racing terms with Finch, chipping time out of his fellow Queenslander through the final stages of the race. In the end the margin was just 0.021 between the pair. Farkas came home third with Brendan Nelson fourth and Blake Worboys fifth. Troy Morrissey started deep in the 38-kart pack and came through for sixth placing, at one stage running third. KA Junior provided one of the closest finishes in the history of Australian karting with the top three covered by 0.053 of a second. Thomas Davies was able to get

the run on the front straightaway in his PIRTEK backed kart to eclipse Shamick Racing’s Joshua Smith and Tyler Everingham - the pair who were at the front of the race for the entirety. Thomas Sergeant took a terrific fourth while Declan Fraser rounded off the top five. The KA12 category for drivers between 9 and 12 delivered a tight finish between Jay Hanson and Kiwi Connor Davison. Davison pushed Hanson right to the line, the margin of victory just 0.026. Oscar Comley staged a terrific through the field drive to finish in third position while Emerson Harvey and Thomas Cooper rounded out the top five. In KA1, Bundaberg racer James Litzow made it another CRG victory after a terrific race.
Litzow led the race early however a skirmish with fellow CRG pilot, Brett Robinson allowed James Adams to establish a lead. Litzow cleared Robinson and then set about chasing down Adams. It took him until the final lap to make the decisive move and record a memorable victory. Robinson was able to come home third, while in KA1 Masters - the race-within-the-race, Paul McNeil took victory over Perry Evans and Michael Dorman. A huge crowd once again turned out for what has become one of the iconic races on the international karting calendar. SIMPLY THE BEST
T
wo of the biggest names in the karting world, Paolo De Conto and Davide Forè, are lining up at this weekend’s Race of Stars powered by SuperFest. De Conto’s Australian debut is his first race since having been crowned World Champion and the Italian can’t wait to head ‘Down Under’. “It is a very exciting opportunity for me. I’ve never been to Australia and everyone tells me the Gold Coast is beautiful,” said DeConto. “Davide speaks very highly of the event, and the Australian people, he has been to the Gold Coast for the past two years and always has a smile on his face when anyone mentions Australia.” It will be the first time in more than 20 years that a current World Karting Champion has competed in Australia. The 24 year-old Italian has joined the CRG Australia team for this weekend’s event. Forè who is the reigning champion and two-time winner
of the event, joins the Hashtag Racing outfit for his 2016 campaign. The five-times World Champion will be accompanied by youngster Tomas Gasperak aboard a pair of Gold Karts in the KZ2 field. “I really love Australia. The past two years I’ve had an amazing time there and I’m very excited to have the opportunity to come to the Gold Coast again,” said 42 yearold Forè. “I first met Tomas at the SuperNationals a couple of years ago. We then met again when I was at the Race of Stars last year where I found out more about him and his racing. I’m really excited to be working with him for the Race of Stars.” During last year’s Race of Stars final, Forè was engaged in one of the greatest races of all-time with Sunshine Coast racer Kyle Ensbey. The pair raced wheel to wheel at close to 160 km/h as they challenged each other for the lead before Forè finished as the winner.
JUNIOR SPROCKETEERS I
n the modern era, children have more sporting options than ever before across the world. How does karting become the number one sport for a child? Unlike football, where you can purchase a ball at a reasonable cost and kick it around the street or a local field, karting around the world has an inherent barrier - unless you own a kart or are lucky enough to have a friend to borrow a kart from, you won’t know until you’ve invested a significant amount of money if your child enjoys it. Then there’s all of the safety gear, licencing and tools. It’s a big investment just to find out if ‘Little Johnny or Little Lucy’ likes driving a kart. Over the past two years Karting Australia along with corporate partner SP Tools, has developed an introduction program called Junior Sprockets. The program is designed to help breakdown the barriers for young drivers looking to sample the sport of karting. “We’ve been involved in Supercars for decades and we wanted to do something for the grass roots of racing, which is where we worked with Karting Australia to develop the Junior Sprockets program,” said SP Tools’ Managing Director Kevin Davis.
“It’s all about helping people find the best pathway into motorsport, and the Junior Sprockets is providing a great springboard for youngsters to get behind the wheel for the first time.” It’s not about racing, it’s not about how fast they go, it’s not even about how many laps they complete in a session; it’s about providing them with a sample of karting in a safe and controlled environment. Using a fleet of Kosmic Micro Karts and Arrow Cadet and Junior Karts powered by Vortex and IAME engines, Junior Sprockets sees young drivers aged between 6 and 14 years of age get behind the wheel for the first time. Australia’s leading karting driver coach Troy Hunt through the Top Gun Racing Academy leads the program. For more than 15 years the former Top Kart factory driver has been educating and developing young Australian drivers through the karting ranks, and has dreamt of one day developing a program such as Junior Sprockets.
“For a long time I’ve wanted to develop such a program and with the partnership between Karting Australia and SP Tools along with the support of the karting industry, I’m delighted with what we’ve been able to put together,” said Hunt. “Seeing the smile on the kids after they hop out of the kart for the first time is just priceless. We all know how great karting is as a sport , but it’s just about breaking down the barriers to get more people to be able to experience it.” With the focus on providing a quality experience for the participants, each Junior Sprockets Day is limited to a maximum of 30 children ranging in age from 6 to 14 years old. Through the support of SP Tools, guests during the day also include Supercar drivers such as dual World Karting Champion James Courtney and Holden Racing Team counterparts Garth Tander, Jack Perkins and Warren Luff. After all participants are given the appropriate instructions by Karting Australia personnel, it’s time for them to suit up in the custom made Xzuit Junior Sprockets suits. Before they put on the Reevu helmets, Hunt and his assistants provide the participants with an insight to the karts and most importantly the safety aspects of the sport.
Unlike the traditional ‘Come & Try’ Days where participants simply hop in a kart and go around to complete several laps, the Junior Sprockets program builds the participants skills before letting them sample a full practice session as the final module. “In all other sports that I know, the participants attend training sessions to learn the skills before building them up to play their first match. Traditionally in karting, we’ve put them straight into the ‘match’ by getting them to just complete laps and then try to teach them the skills afterwards,” said Hunt. “The Junior Sprockets program is about building them up slowly and getting them ready to play the ‘match’.”
Nick Blaxell, who attended the first program of 2016 in Albury with his wife and two sons, believes the program provided him and his family with a great introduction to the sport of karting. “I’ve always been interested in motorsport and as a result my kids have followed,” said Blaxell. “My six year-old is the biggest motorsport fan of us all and after driving six hours from Sydney to attend the day, he went into his ‘shell’. He went all shy and didn’t want to get in the kart. “If his first experience in a kart was just me and him I don’t think we would have got past the first step. The
Junior Sprockets team walked him through every step of the process and gradually built him up to the point where he started doing laps and just didn’t want to get out. When he did, he was giving everyone high fives and had a smile from ear to ear. “For the youngsters, the Junior Sprockets is a really great initiative by Karting Australia, and I’ve already recommended it to a few friends whose kids are keen to experience karting. I think it will be one that will continue to grow.” All events are all scheduled in the school holiday periods to achieve the maximum impact. As Australia is a large country, the program’s
transport partner ALM Sales has travelled 13,500 kilometres with all of the program’s associated equipment. Throughout the six venues that the program will be held at across Australia in 2016, more than 200 children will be introduced to the sport of karting for the first time. With the pilot program in 2015 seeing 30% of participants transferring into licence holders, it represents a fantastic marketing tool for the sport in Australia. The Junior Sprockets program is the first step in Karting Australia’s Development plan for the coming years. While up to 10 Junior Sprockets days are to be planned for 2017, there will also be a ‘Bring a Mate’ program developed to encourage the friends and family of current racers to get involved in the sport. “The Junior Sprockets program has been designed to provide a structured approach to enable young drivers to experience the thrill of kart racing, while also educating them about the sport at the same time,” said Karting Australia Chief Executive Officer Kelvin O’Reilly. “It’s all about making it easier for people to get involved in the sport and the Junior Sprockets program is the first step – aimed purely at the children. The ‘Bring a Mate’ program is aimed at the next age bracket. “Our research shows that 70% of our current licence holders started racing because they had a friend or family member involved, so it’s all about using that to our advantage. “All in all I’m very proud of what the team behind Junior Sprockets has achieved but it’s just the start, we’re very focused on developing programs that assist with the growth of the sport in the long-term.” The Junior Sprockets program is proudly supported by SP Tools, DPE Kart Technology, Arrow, Kosmic, Dunlop KartSport, Reevu Helmets, Vortex engines, IAME engines, Bridgestone, Castrol, Jayco and Top Gun Driving Academy.
