WELCOME On behalf of the Karting Australia Board, Staff and Members I’d like to welcome you to the opening round of the 2021 SP Tools Australian Kart Championship presented by Castrol EDGE. After a challenging year in 2020 following the onset of COVID-19 in March, I’m looking forward to leading the sport into 2021 as we aim to achieve some sort of ‘normality’ as the year progresses. To have close to 300 entries for the opening round of this year’s Championship is an incredible start to the year and continues to build on the fantastic past few months for our Clubs. As we have emerged from the COVID-19 restrictions across the country, it has been encouraging to see so many people getting out and
enjoying the sport. This weekend is the culmination of several months of work for the team at the Ipswich Kart Club and follows on from a massive start to their Club Championship only a couple of weeks ago where they had a very impressive 343 entries. 2021 marks seven years since the Karting Australia Board moved all of our National Championship Classes to a multi-round format, and it has been great to see it build year-on-year to now be one of the best supported National Championships anywhere in the world. To be able to have people from all across the country converge in this weekend’s event gives me great pleasure and to see our sport showcased in a night time spectacle for the finals is an added bonus for the event.

What is the AKC?
The SP Tools Australian Kart Championship presented by Castrol EDGE is the premier karting Championship in the Southern Hemisphere. Contested across five rounds throughout four states of Australia, the Championship attracts the best drivers from all across Australia to compete for the honour of being crowned Australian Champion in their respective Class. The elite KZ2 class is recognised internationally as the pinnacle of karting in the world with drivers utilizing sixspeed gearbox engines and reaching speeds in excess of 140 km/h on most circuits in the Championship. The KA2 class is Australia’s elite level of junior competition. Former Champions and Round Winners in this class are making a significant mark in the world of motorsport including the likes of 2020 FIA Formula 3 Champion Oscar Piastri and recent Ferrari Academy Inductee James Wharton. X30 has attracted significant interest over the past few Championships with drivers using the IAME X30 125cc powerplant. TaG 125 is Australia’s multi-engine category that sees the Rotax Max, IAME X30 and PRD Galaxy used by various drivers while KA3 Senior is a staple of Australian karting with the IAME KA100 engine easily able to be transformed from the KA4 Junior class into KA3 Senior. The Cadet 9 and 12 classes are the sub-junior classes in the championship with drivers as young as seven dicing it out in the Cadet 9 division. For these drivers, it is as much about learning car control and driving techniques during their formative years as it is about greeting the chequered flag first. Drivers in both of these classes are powered by a 60cc Vortex Mini Rok engine, which is used in a similar specification in more than 20 countries around the world.

HUNT-ING THE BEST Having been involved in the sport of karting for more than 30 years, Troy Hunt is one of the most experienced and knowledgeable in the pit area at any Australian Karting event. The Sydney-sider enjoyed a stunning career behind the wheel across more than two decades and included an impressive seven National Championships while competing against the likes of Jami Whincip, James Coutrney, Mark Winterbottom and Ryan Briscoe. Since hanging up the driving helmet in 2009, Hunt’s success has become just as formidable as a Driver Coach and Team Manager. Through his Top Gun Driver Training Academy Hunt has seen his drivers enjoy success at all levels of the sport – Club, State, National and International. He has also played an integral part with numerous young drivers who have gone on to forge successful careers in other forms of motorsport. “For me it’s always about working with my drivers to extract the most out of their ability and setting realistic goals – it always has been and always will be,” said Hunt. “These goals vary from
driver to driver. For some it’s about improving their personal best lap time, others it’s about succeeding at a Club Day event or securing an Australian Kart Championship. Karting is a sport that provides so many opportunities, both on and off the track, for people to be able to develop themselves. “The most important thing for me is that everyone I work with enjoys the sport for what it is.” Working closely alongside of Hunt during 2021 will be the higly experienced mentors and mechanics Tim Slade, who is a Top Gun graduate and current Supercars driver, Cody Brewczynski and Andy Kondaparakis to help guide the Top Gun Racing Academy drivers throughout the 2021 SP Tools Australian Kart Championship.

The results of the qualifying session will determine the grid for Heat Race one (1) and two (2) from fastest to slowest. Grid positions for Heat Race three (3) will consist of the lowest accumulated point scored from Heat Race one (1) and Heat Race two (2). The Driver who has accumulated the least points in Heat Races 1 and 2 will start on Pole Position for Heat Race 3. The Driver who has accumulated the second least points in those Heat Races will start on Grid Position 2 for Heat Race 3 and so on until the grid is filled to Track Density. The Driver who has accumulated the second least points in those Heat Races will start on Grid Position 2 for Heat Race 4 and so on until the grid is filled to Track Density. WHEN MUM’S HAPPY As the saying goes “When Mum’s happy, everyone’s happy!” That’s certainly the case when Mother of two, Barbara Anagostiadis is at the karting circuit. Having raced at the highest level of Australian karting during her teenage years, Anagostiadis is now re-living the childhood she had with her father, alongside her husband Adam with their two children Aiva and James. Following their Mum’s footsteps into the karting arena, the Anagostiadis youngsters are certainly making a name for themselves in the SP Tools Australian Kart Championship. This year, Aiva will take on the elite junior drivers in the KA2 ranks while James will line up in the highly competitive Cadet 12 class. After moving out from a team environment to a family-run outfit for the start of the 2020 Championship, Anagostiadis says that it has been both challenging and rewarding at the same time. “Operating more independently has had its challenges but it has also been very rewarding” said Anagostiadis. “We’ve managed to surround ourselves with an amazing group of people, which
includes Aiva’s mechanic and mentor, Paul Gallo, who has multiple achievements to his repertoire including a World Championship.” “We had been a part of the Tom Williamson Motorsport team for a few years and it was amazing and a great learning experience for us, but by running our own racing program it has brought back a lot of the memories that I had with my Dad when I was racing in the late nineties. We’ve also been focusing on more racing closer to home at Club and local level, which has been really enjoyable. Karting is where most of us grew to love motorsport, it’s motorsport in it’s purest form and we wanted to make sure both Aiva and James were able to enjoy their experience in karts for the pure fun and racing that it is. “We’re a very close family and karting is a huge part of our lives, it’s great now to be able to go away all over the country and spend time together as a family - motorsport has always been my thing and always will be. I’m so happy that now my kids and husband love it as much as what I do and that we are able achieve our goals together. At the end of the day, that’s what it’s all about!”
