Mick Doohan - Karting Australia Chairman It gives me great pleasure to welcome you to the opening round of the 2020 SP Tools Australian Kart Championship. To have more than 300 of the best drivers from all across Australia and several other countries in attendance, it is a great credit to everyone involved in our sport of karting in Australia and something we should all be very proud of. 2020 marks the sixth year since the Karting Australia Board moved all of our National Championship Classes to a multi-round format, and it has been great to see it build year-on-year to now be one of the best supported National Championships anywhere in the world. This weekend’s venue for the opening round of The Bend Motorsport Park is certainly world-class and a real credit to Sam Shahin and his team for their investment into such magnificent infrastructure for not only Australian karting but Australian motorsport as a whole. I wish all of the teams and competitors a safe and enjoyable weekend to start their Championship campaigns and if you’re here just checking out the action I hope you get the karting bug and you’re on track soon. The Bend Motorsport Park has been built with the goal of providing the sport with a venue of high international standard. I do hope that we can contribute to the growth of this great sport of karting both at a state and at a national level, and I thank everyone who has entrusted us with the faith to put on this event. I do feel the weight of responsibility on my shoulders and I hope we live up to everyone’s expectations. KZ2Trophy A new era for KZ2 The step into the elite KZ2 gearbox class has traditionally been an intimidating one for those drivers moving through the karting ranks from the direct drive classes.
However, with the introduction of the KZ2
Trophy division in 2020 the barriers have been broken down. The drivers will be using previously homologated engines, controlled components and regular premium unleaded fuel rather than the racing fuel and latest equipment able to be used by competitors in the KZ2 class. Drivers in the KZ2 Trophy division will be battling for an outright round trophy and their own pointscore which will see the overall winner receive free entry and racing tyres for their campaign in the 2021 Australian Kart Championship.
KA2 is bursting at the seams The elite level of Australian junior karting - KA2 - is bursting at the seams with an incredible 47 entries having been received for this weekend’s opening event of 2020 at The Bend Motorsport Park. The entry list surpasses any other records in an elite junior category and included in the field are representatives from every State of Australia, six drivers from across the Tasman and an Italian licence holder. Last year’s champion Luke Pink has moved into the senior ranks, opening the door for a new star in the junior ranks who will aim to emulate the likes of former champions such as Broc Feeney (Super2 Series), Jack Doohan (FIA Formula 3), Tim Slade (Supercars) and Ryan Briscoe (IndyCar/Sports Cars) along with former round winners Oscar Piastri (FIA Formula 3), Zane Morse (Super2 Series), Aaron Cameron (TCR Australia).

The JC Kart team has moved from JC Kart to Parolin chassis for 2020 with the team now known as JC Sport. With the formerly-named Zedcorse team merging with Shamick Racing, Parolin is expected to make a big impact in 2020.
Several new teams have formed, or expanded, during the off season. Former KZ2 Champion Tyler Greenbury has started his own team for the Australian Kart Championship as has Kiwi Champion Daniel Bray while Anarchy Motorsport has expanded significantly.
The most successful driver in the history of the CIK/AKC, Pierce Lehane, announced his retirement from the top level of karting late in 2019. The multiple-time Australian Champion will this year be sharing his wealth of knowledge as a Driver Coach for Rush Performance.
The Patrizicorse team has several new faces in its line-up for the 2020 Championship. Jac Preston joins the team alongside reigning Champion Troy Loeskow in the KZ2 class and Hugh Barter has joined the team in the KA2 class.

his weekend Queenslander Chris
Hays becomes the first driver to reach the milestone of 50 rounds of Australia’s elite karting Championship. After enjoying success in the National Championship as a junior, Hays leapfrogged straight into the elite KZ2 class when he moved into the Senior ranks at the start of 2010. After a baptism of fire against some of Australia’s most experienced karters, Hays broke through for his first round win in Newcastle at Round Two of the 2012 Championship. He would continue his good run to be crowned Champion following victory at the final round in Melbourne later that year. Over the ensuing two years, Hays would be engaged with some titanic battles with former KZ2 World Cup Champion Joey Hanssen who was based in Australia. He would then continue to be a serious contender at every round and throughout his 10-years at the highest level of the sport Hays has proven to be one of the most consistent drivers ever seen in the championship.
Highlighting his
consistency is the fact that Hays has finished inside the top ten in 78% of the rounds he has contested - including ten consecutive top ten finishes over the past two years. Throughout his career so far, Hays has recorded five round wins, 18 podium finishes and 27 top five results.
