2017 Australian Kart Championship Round 2 Program

CHAIRMAN’S MESSAGE WELCOME to the second round of the 2017 Australian Kart Championship presented by Jayco and Castrol EDGE. Once again we’ve got more than 260 entries across the nine classes, which is great sign for the sport here in Australia. It’s fantastic to see so many drivers from all across the country, along with New Zealand and Singapore, set to line up on the grid. We will also have all nine Australian Kart Champions from 2016 in action. Over the years, the Geelong circuit has hosted a significant number of national events. The Australian Kart Championship was last here in 2015 for the final round where some fantastic racing culminated in the Champions being crowned. After the challenges thrown up to everyone in Newcastle, none more so than the stifling heat, it looks like it is going to be a lot more comfortable this weekend in Geelong. I’m sure that will please Teams, Competitors and Officials alike. Looking at the results from Newcastle it was very pleasing to see so many new faces finish on the podium with seven drivers winning their class for the first time. I look forward to seeing who will be the next group drivers to star and write their name in the record books by standing on the top step of the podium in Geelong this weekend. Over the past few months we have welcomed both MercedesBenz and SP Tools as official suppliers to the Australian Kart Championship, alongside our long-term partners Jayco and Castrol EDGE. These brands accompany the likes of Bridgestone, Dunlop, MG Tyres, Vortex and IAME as great supporters of our sport and we encourage you to support them all where possible. In closing, I’d like to wish all of the Competitors and Teams the best of luck across the weekend and hope that you all have an enjoyable weekend in Geelong. Mick Doohan Karting Australia Chairman

PADDOCK TORQUE...... SOMETHING OLD IS NEW AGAIN

Almost 20 years after his Uncle Jason claimed a pair of National Championships in Geelong, Zakiah Varley will this weekend compete with an almost identicial Arrow AX6 kart. While Jason’s original AX6 has pride of place in his father’s shed, Zakiah and his father Paul have spent the past two months building up an identical kart since the opening round of the 2017 Championship in Newcastle. All of the build has been under the guidance of Reg Varley. Bringing a 1998-built AX6 up to modern specifications and sourcing parts was somewhat a challenge, however, thanks to the support from the team at Southern Star Trucks, Tommy Gallo from PCR Australia, Shayne Piper, Jason from Leussink’s Engineering along with Remo Luciani, Zakiah will be in action this weekend in the iconic kart.

SUPERCAR DRIVERS IN ACTION

This weekend’s round in Geelong will see former Bathurst Champion Nick Percat make his return to the Australian Kart Championship. The 28 year-old will compete in the elite KZ2 class, where along with the top drivers from all across the country he will also be joined by his Dunlop Super2 Series team-mate Macauley Jones. Percat believes the challenge of driving the high-powered KZ2 machines is a great training regime in between events in the Virgin Australia Supercars Championship. “The beauty of racing the KZ is that the physical challenge is extremely high and getting every bit of speed out of them is a fine art,” said Percat. “They certainly keep you sharp and ensure that you’re right on top of your game for when you climb back into the Supercar.” Garry Rogers Motorsport Endurance driver James Golding will also be in action in Geelong this weekend.

BRING A MATE!

Karting Australia has launched a new initiative to allow even more people to experience the thrill and excitement of driving a kart through it’s ‘Bring a Mate’ program. Just as the name suggests, Bring a Mate has been designed to allow people who are interested to try karting to get behind the wheel on one of Karting Australia’s 88 licenced tracks across the country in a real racing kart. “The Bring a Mate program is an opportunity for women, men, boys and girls to experience kart racing,” said Karting Ausralia CEO Kelvin O’Reilly. “Our research over the years has confirmed that around 70% of our licence holders became involved in the sport courtesy of a friend or family who were involved in karting, the Bring a Mate program makes it even easier for these people to get involved.” The Bring a Mate days will be organised by Karting Australia Clubs across the country. If you want to give your mate a go in a kart, be sure to contact your local club and ask them when their next Bring a Mate day will be held.

RICCIARDO KART DOMINATES The Ricciardo Kart factory team has achieved a haul of four class victories at the Australian Kart Championship presented by Jayco and Castrol EDGE in Newcastle, the most successful haul by the brand. Ricciardo Kart pilots took victories, Troy Loeskow scored a decisive victory in KZ2 gearbox, Lachlan Hughes in the elite Junior KA2 category, Jace Matthews in his senior karting debut in KA1 and Marc Tulloch secured his first round win in X30. Defending Australian Champions, Ryan Tomsett (Exprit) and Brendan Nelson (FA Kart) took victory in Cadet 9 and TaG 125 respectively, while Kody Garland (KA3 Senior), Zac Crichton (KA4 Junior) and Rhys Smith (Cadet 12) took breakthrough wins in their respective categories. It was the most successful weekend for the Patrizicorseoperated Ricciardo Kart team since the brand entered the sport three seasons ago. Loeskow pushed hard throughout the weekend and was able to get the best of the start from the outside front row in the final. He jumped weekend long combatant, Joshua Fife (Energy Corse) and that was the move which proved decisive. Fife was valiant throughout the race, pushing hard to close the gap to Loeskow, however the early race laps by the Bundaberg-based leader was too much for the youngster to close down. Finishing third was new CRG Australia recruit, Daniel Price, the South Australian celebrating his birthday on the podium. In KA2, a turn one pile-up accounted for eight competitors, forcing officials to trigger a full course caution to clear the carnage. On the restart, Hughes got the best of it and pushed away. Qualifying pole-sitter, Reece Cohen went with the Gold Coaster and the duo began to pull away. They staged a

terrific battle for the lead which lasted the majority of the 18 lap distance. Entering the final lap, a broken bearing carrier bolt on Cohen’s Top Gun Racing JC Kart stopped cruelly robbing the debutant of a maiden KA2 podium. This elevated another first time KA2 campaigner in Cody Burcher to second and Taylor Hazard to position three – the first time he has stood on an Australian Kart Championship dais. KA1 all weekend long was about Jace Matthews. The Queenslander was supreme in his CXR Racing Engines Ricciardo Kart throughout all four heat races and in the final staged a clinic to take victory by 9.8 seconds in his first KA1 Championship race. Sydney-sider, Kyle Henry-Smith steered his Scuderia PCR entry to second place and his second AKC podium, whilst Kosmic pilot, Daniel Edmonds was awarded his first ever Australian Kart Championship trophy in third. Much like Matthews, Marc Tulloch was without peer in X30. Tulloch, he had a field that included drivers like 18-Australian Champion David Sera and defending Australian Champion, Adam Mercer. Tulloch led the entire 18-lap distance in the final to take his first ever Australian Kart Championship round win, winning by 0.581 over Joshua Car (CompKart) and Leigh Nicolaou. Victorian, Dylan Hollis ended a troubled weekend strongly - finishing the final in 10th position after starting 35th. He scythed his way past the strong field, leaving the majority of it in his wake. Another dominant first time winner was New South Welshman Kody Garland in KA3 Senior, Garland, in a field of 37 competitors jumped away to a 3.3 second win over veteran multi-Australian Champion, James Sera and Dean

O’Brien who had been solid throughout the course of the weekend’s competition. Defending TaG Champion, Brendan Nelson picked up where he left off last year in taking a 0.850 second win in TaG 125. The Queenslander didn’t have the dominance of last year in making it to victory lane, pushed all the way by Mitchell Hewitt, who pulled out a big final performance. Finishing third in the final was heat winner from Saturday, Zac van Leeuwestyn, who got the best of Joshua Davey - the duo being in the middle of a race long battle. One of the more entertaining finals of the day was in KA4 Junior. Zac Crichton pushed his way to the lead in his JC Kart but had a busy pack following him. Kai Allen got his CRG into second position after battles that involved defending Australian Champion Cooper Webster and Jay Hanson. Once in second, he set sail for Crichton and ended up closing right up to him. It went down to a last lap finish, with Crichton narrowly getting the win over the fast charging Allen and South Aussie Blake Purdie in his Zanardi Kart. In Cadet 12, Rhys Smith won the final heat race of the weekend, but by virtue of a low result in heat one had to start the final from position seven. It didn’t take him long to pick off those in front of him and get his PCR to the lead. It was behind that the battle was interesting. James Wharton, Ethan Feather, Adrian Haak and Tex Starr-McCoy were in the thick of it. In the end, Shamick Racing CRG pilot Wharton came home second with Haak in third after leading the race early. The closest finish of the day came in Cadet 9 when defending Australian Champion, Ryan Tomsett left it to the last corner to edge past Victorian Harry Arnett for the win. The margin of victory was just 0.074 seconds as the pair were side-by-side at the line. Marshall Crofts elevated his CRG to third after a strong battle with Maddison Feather and Macka Hazard.

FAST FIVE WITH LOCHIE HUGHES When and why did you start racing karts? I started racing karts in 2012 after going on a holiday to Phuket where we went to the local hire kart track and I had a go at. When I got back home I wanted to keep doing it so Mum took me to Slideways Go karting where I met Jesse Dixon who then got me into the sport. What has been the highlight of your racing so far? My highlight of my racing career so far has been 2nd in the florida winter tour championship in 2014 and 2nd at the WSK Gold cup in 2015 but hopefully there are some even better results to come. Who are the drivers you admire and look up to the most? The drivers I admire for what they have achieved are Daniel Ricciardo, Ayrton Senna and Jim Clark. My Dad is the person I look up to the most and more than anyone, especially for all the hard work he puts into my racing. What is the best piece of karting advice anyone has ever given you? The best advice anyone has ever given me would probably be Micheal Patrizi who told me that if you put the effort into it and work hard enough anything is possible. What are your goals for 2017? My goals for 2017 are to just keep winning races in the 2017 AKC and the Championship will eventually fall into place. I’ll also be aiming to get some very strong results when I race overseas.

FAST FIVE WITH KYLE HENRY-SMITH

When and why did you start racing karts? I started in karts at 10 years old being a weekend warrior, it then got serious and I started with the PCR Australia team with Tommy Gallo in 2013. Tommy has been the biggest influence on my career and always been hugely supportive of my racing. What has been the highlight of your racing so far? While I don’t have one event in particular, it would probably be just being able to compete in KA1 in the Australian Kart Championship and DD2 in the Rotax Pro Tour. Who are the drivers you admire and look up to the most? I’ve always admired the way John Grother and Matt Waters go about their racing. What is the best piece of karting advice anyone has ever given you? The best piece of advice given to me would be to ‘roll’ and make sure you are gentle on the throttle. I’m continually reminding myself to keep this in mind, especially with the Vortex DVS engine. What are your goals for 2017? To make the most of my opportunities in the KA1 class and hopefully get a solid finish in the championship.
