CHAIRMAN’S MESSAGE WELCOME to the Round Three of the 2017 Australian Kart Championship presented by Jayco and Castrol EDGE in Monarto. Over the past couple of years the Committee and Members of the Go-Kart Club of South Australia has put in a sterling effort to ensure the venue is presented in the best possible way and the event runs smoothly. I expect this weekend will be no different. With more than 220 entries received for this weekend’s event, including drivers from every State and Territory of Australia along visitors from New Zealand, England, the Philippines, Singapore and the Netherlands, it’s all set to be another very exciting weekend. As we hit the halfway mark in the Championship the battle for prestigious green plates are starting to heat up. The domination by Ricciardo Kart drivers Troy Loeskow and Jace Matthews has them holding a commanding position in the lead of the KZ2 and KA1 classes respectively – as does reigning Champion Brendan Nelson in TaG 125. However, all of the other classes are as close as ever – particularly the KA3 Senior class where the top five drivers are covered by a mere 27 points. If the past KA3 races at Monarto are anything to go by that intense battle will continue in earnest this weekend. Away from the on track action I’d like to thank Mayor Brenton Lewis and the Rural City of Murray Bridge for their continued support of the Monarto venue and especially this weekend’s event. In 2017 we’ve welcomed Mercedes-Benz and SP Tools as official suppliers to the Australian Kart Championship, alongside our long-term partners Jayco and Castrol EDGE. These brands accompany the likes of Bridgestone, Dunlop, MG Tyres, Vortex and IAME as great supporters of our sport and we encourage you to support them all where possible. I’d like to wish all of the Competitors and Teams the best of luck across the weekend and hope that you all have an enjoyable weekend in the Murray Bridge region. Mick Doohan Karting Australia Chairman
PADDOCK TORQUE...... INTERNATIONAL FLAVOUR
In addition to drivers from every State and Territory of Australia being respresented this weekend in Monarto there will also be a real international flavour around the place. Fresh from a runner-up placing at the second round of the European KZ Championship in Belgium, Dutchman Marijn Kremers will make a return to Australia. He will be joined on the X30 grid by former World Champion Tom Joyner from England. Kremers was victorious in both the X30 and KZ2 classes in the corresponding round last year after residing in Australia throughout 2016 while Joyner’s maiden visit to Australia for the final round of 2015 resulted in a ninth place finish in the KZ2 class. In addition to Kremers and Joyner, this weekend’s event will see a number of drivers from New Zealand along representatives from Sinagpore and the Philippines in action.
PERCAT BECOMES A REGULAR
Brad Jones Racing Supercars driver Nick Percat has committed to compete in the remaining three rounds of the 2017 Australian Kart Championship presented by Jayco and Castrol EDGE. The 2011 Bathurst 1000 Champion will join the CRG Australia team for the campaign. After finishing 11th during a cameo appearance last month in Geelong, Percat has got his sights set on running at the front of the elite KZ2 field. “Testing is so limited in Supercars you’ve got to make sure you stay on top of your game and for me there is no better training than actual racing,” said Percat. Percat says that without the support of his Supercars team owner Brad Jones, racing a kart at this level would not be possible. “At the end of the day we’re all racers, if its got wheels we’ll race it and deep down Brad is one of the purest racers you’ll ever meet. He can really see the benefit of karting and I thank him for allowing me to be able to race and do what I love doing,” said Percat. “Racing a KZ2 gearbox kart is more physical than driving a Supercar. You’re doing something between 25 and 35 gear changes per 40 second lap, with karts right in front and behind you – it’s intense.”
CHANGING CAMPS
As the 2017 Australian Kart Championship reaches the halfway mark this weekend in Monarto, several young drivers have found new homes for the remaining rounds. After competing the previous round aboard an Arrow AX8 KA4 driver Zak Varley, nephew of dual Australian Champion Jason Varley, will line up this weekend with the Scuderia PCR Australia team. “Tommy (Gallo) of PCR has been a great supporter of mine recently and I’m delighted to be able to join him and the Scuderia PCR Australia team,” said Varley, who recorded a top ten finish last round. Also changing teams for this round is KA2 driver Travis Worton who will join the Patrizicorse outfit in a BirelART chassis and Jackson Walls will make his debut in a JC Kart.

LOESKOW LANDS ANOTHER WIN Troy Loeskow’s quest for his second Australian Championship continues to gain momentum with the Ricciardo Kart driver claiming his second consecutive round victory in Geelong. The Bundaberg driver’s victory in the KZ2 class ahead of South Australian CRG pilot Daniel Price sees him now hold a 38-point buffer a top of the standings. Loeskow’s came in a final that saw a turn one incident claim no less than eight competitors triggered when Macauley Jones was spun in front of the charging pack. Starting from pole position Loeskow quickly established an advantage over the field and was able to maintain the gap right to the chequered flag, securing the win over the CRG driver. Aaron Cameron had been in the thick of the action aboard his JC Kart throughout the weekend and he salvaged a hard fought third placing with Jason Pringle finishing fourth and KZ2 stalwart, Sam Houston gaining a career-best finish in fifth. After a challenging weekend 2011 Bathurst 1000 Champion, Nick Percat had an entertaining late race exchange for ninth place with his Brad Jones Racing stablemate, Macauley Jones - with the battle of the Supercars drivers going the way of Jones after recovering from the turn 1 melee. Continuing the good form of Ricciardo Kart was Jace Matthews in KA1. Matthews backed up his Newcastle win to make it two on the trot since moving to seniors. Providing some entertaining across the weekend, the KA1 class saw the likes of Matthews and defending Champion Scott Sorensen joined by some fresh faces at the pointy end of the field. While Matthews and Sorensen were comfortable in first and second in the final, third placed raged right to the end.
It fell the way of Scuderia PCR driver, Kyle Henry-Smith, but it could have easily gone in many different directions. The second Ricciardo Kart of Thomas Steele, Ryan Sanderson’s Formula K and Matthew Stenner’s Kosmic all had dalliances with the final step of the podium. In KA2, the elite junior category, a two-kart battle was staged for the round win between defending Australian Champion Jack Doohan and Broc Feeney. Feeney led the majority of the race in his Kosmic before Doohan closed down and made the decisive move two laps from home. Christian Pancione in his FA Kart survived a late race surge from Jordyn Sinni to finish in third. KA3 Senior delivered the closest finish of the day with Leigh Nicolaou taking his Shamick Racing Arrow to victory by just a tenth of a second over Matthew McLean. Australian Champion McLean had to work hard to close the gap to Nicolaou and did so in the end, however it was the only race all weekend that McLean had been headed - those results keeping his Title defence well on track. New South Welshman Oscar Priest put a strong performance in to finish third and remain within eight points of the championship lead. Joshua Car took a solid win in the TaG 125 category aboard his Comp Kart. The Sydneysider pushed hard to advance himself into the lead and had enough to outlast a surge by Queenslander Brendan Nelson. Nelson skipped ahead of a battle between Joshua Rogers and Paul Rodgers which lasted the entire 26-lap distance, which eventually fell the way of the latter. Nelson was again denied in the X30 final in what became a battle of the FA Karts. After leading early, he dropped to second behind South Australian Morgan Feast who took off at the front. Nelson’s biggest challenge came from West

Australian Ben Harders - who also had a stint at the front of the pack. In the end, Feast led the FA Kart trifecta to take the second AKC round win of his career over Nelson and Harders, with Car coming home in fourth. In KA4 Junior, Kai Allen played his role perfectly in waiting until the final moments to strike. Weekend long combatants, Cooper Webster and Jay Hanson were battling up front for the lead with Zac Crichton and Kacey Mann playing a supporting role with Allen. Allen was able to close the gap
to Australian Champion Webster and Hanson and then waited for the opportunity to snare the lead, this led to a wild sequence of events on the run to the chequers where Allen took the wind by 1.5 seconds over Webster and Hanson with Mann and Crichton close behind. Cadet 9 provided a milestone moment for karting in Australia with the first graduate of the SP Tools Junior Sprockets program - Cadel Ambrose - taking the round win. It is the first time a ‘Sprocketeer’ has come through for victory at an Australian Kart Championship round and he did it with
style. He outlasted several challenges throughout the course of the race, the most potent from second placed finisher, Shamick Racing pilot, Harry Arnett and Toby Dvorak - who came home third. In Cadet 12, James Wharton was able to extend his points advantage in the Championship with a dominant victory. His Shamick Racing FA Kart took the win by 3.228 seconds over Fletcher Harris who was comfortably in front of Marcos Flack in third. It was in fact the biggest winning margin of the weekend in any category.
FAST FIVE WITH RUEBEN GOODDALL When and why did you start racing karts? I started practicing in March 2014 when I was 10 years old and started racing in October in the Rookies category. I started racing karts because I’ve always loved watching V8 Supercars and Formula One and one day wanted to become a V8 Supercars or F1 driver, so I tried hire karting and loved it. I soon became a “pro” and asked Dad to take me back every week and eventually asked Dad to buy me a kart so I could race competitively against others my age, so Dad and I got into the sport.
What has been the highlight of your racing so far? The highlight of my racing so far would of been the 2015 River City Titles in the Cadet 12 category. I came second for the meeting after having some great races with my team-mate Blake Purdie who won. Who are the drivers you admire and look up to the most? I admire a lot of drivers but one that stands out is Sebastian Vettel because he is a great driver with a funny catch to him. What is the best piece of karting advice anyone has ever given you? The best piece of advice is from Flavio telling me after a mistake or accident to “stay calm whilst driving because when you are mad you make more mistakes” or from David Brewer teaching me to drive smooth and slow in and fast out. What are your goals for 2017? My goals for 2017 would be to finish on the podium in the SA Kart Championship and top ten in the Monarto round of the Australian Kart Championship.

FAST FIVE WITH CORY ARNETT
When and why did you start racing karts? I started racing karts when I was eight years old. My family has been involved in the sport for many years and because Dad used to race I spent alot of time at the track. I wanted to race just like he did. What has been the highlight of your racing so far? The highlights so far would have to be finishing on the podium at State and National events. Who are the drivers you admire and look up to the most? When Joey Hanssen was racing here in Australia I was able to spend a lot of time with him and learnt a lot. He is certainly someone in karting that I really admire and in the Supercars it would have to be Shane van Gisbergen. What is the best piece of karting advice anyone has ever given you? The best piece of advice that I’ve ever been given was to always go out there and have fun while doing the nest that I can. What are your goals for 2017? My goals for 2017 is to consistently finish in the top ten. This weekend I’m making my debut in KZ2 after racing X30 for the first couple of rounds, so that will be a huge learning experience.
