CHAIRMAN’S MESSAGE O
n behalf of Karting Australia I would like to welcome everyone here to round three of the 2016 Australian Kart Championship presented by Jayco and Castrol EDGE here at the Monarto Karting Complex. With this weekend marking the half way point in the championship I’m looking forward to seeing even more great racing like we have experienced in Dubbo and Puckapunyal. The racing in all classes at Puckpaunyal was exceptional, particularly in KA4 Junior and KZ2. Seeing the skills of those junior racers in the final was great to see and the battles at the front of the KZ2 field between Dave Sera, Kyle Ensbey and Josh Fife was exhilarating. If last year’s Australian Kart Championship round here in Monarto is anything to go by, we’re in for some sensational racing and a great event with the support of the Go-Kart Club of South Australia committee and the Regional City of Murray Bridge. It’s always great to take our championship to a region that is so supportive of our events and we thank Mayor Brenton Lewis and his team of Councillors for their continued support of karting and the Monarto venue. I wish all Competitors and Teams the best of luck across the weekend and look forward to seeing the podium finishers enjoying the spoils of success on Sunday afternoon. Mick Doohan Karting Australia Chairman
SERA RETURNS TO THE TOP STEP AFTER spending the majority of 2015 on the sidelines with injury David Sera has emerged as the driver to beat in the 2016 Australian Kart Championship. Sera dominated the preliminary events during the opening round before fading to ninth in the KZ2 final but in round two he made a return to the top step in round two of the Championship supported by Jayco and Castrol EDGE. After once again setting the pace early in the weekend the 17-time Australian Champion endured multiple challenges in the 25-lap final – particularly from CRG driver Kyle Ensbey. Sera jumped in front of Ensbey at the start, however the Queenslander would not be denied. Mid-race, Sera left the door slightly ajar heading into turn one and Ensbey pushed down the inside. The result of the move was that Sera dropped back to fourth position and was forced to bide his time. A move from Joshua Fife on Ensbey allowed Sera to come back into the picture. Forcing his way into the lead Sera established a gap before his rivals once again closed the gap to harass the rear of his Deadly Kart. Sera showed all the guile that has led him to become the most prolific Australian Champion in history to hold out the 15-year-old Canberra driver. At the end of the race, an exhausted Sera said that he had to push hard to keep the competition at bay to secure his first win since September 2014. “It was tough, I was really doing everything to keep the field behind me, I didn’t have the pace if I was to be honest,” Sera reflected. “I’m exhausted, it was a really taxing fight, but a good feeling to be back on top, it has been a while!”
Meantime, Ricciardo Kart’s Marijn Kremers was closing the gap to the top two after managing his MG tyres and getting up into third position from deep on the grid. HDR Arrow Karts’ Scott Sorensen returned to the top step of the podium in KA1 taking a comfortable victory in what was an entertaining final. Round one winner Reece Sidebottom took his Reevu Helmets Kosmic to second while 14-year-old category debutant, Cory Arnett came home in third position in an impressive showing. Queenslander Jack Doohan won his first-ever elite junior (KA2) Championship round. Doohan had a difficult weekend, however it all came good for him in the final. He worked his way through the field in his Kosmic Kart to take the win. He led home a Kosmic trifecta that also saw Cameron Longmore score his best ever finish in the category in second and Lachlan Hughes finish third. The KA4 Junior final produced arguably the best race seen since the inception of the Australian Kart Championship era. No less than five drivers were involved in the battle for the win with the lead swapping on multiple occasions. Benito Montalbano emerged victorious for Scuderia PCR Australia with Cooper Webster bringing his kart home second and round one winner Travis Worton finishing third. Adam Mercer put on a clinic in the X30 category, taking a victory by 2.5 seconds aboard his Australian-made Arrow kart. KA3 fell the way of Cody Donald. The Arrow driver had enjoyed a fierce battle with Shamick Racing’s Jordan Nicolaou throughout the course of the weekend and

it looked as though it would be the same in the final, however Donald got to the lead and then started pulling away. The 15-year-old in just his second AKC race was ecstatic with victory, whilst Nicolaou came home second and Spencer Ackerman brought his Tony Kart home in third after a sensational weekend. In Cadet 12 Kobi Williams took the win over Fletcher Harris. That came after a battle that also involved Shamick Racing CRG pilots, James Wharton and Kai Allen. The two Victorians ended up fighting among themselves in the closing stages with Wharton salvaging third at the end of the race. Alex Ninovic recovered from a disappointing qualifying result to win in Cadet 9 while Brendan Nelson made it two on the trot in TaG 125. Nelson was challenged throughout the weekend by Joshua Car before taking a comfortable win in the final.

TASMANIA’S NEXT GENERATION
T
hroughout the years a number of top motorsport stars have come from the Apple Isle - none more so than V8 Supercars Champion and former NASCAR star Marcos Ambrose and Bathurst 1000 Winner John Bowe. In karting, there has also been some great talent emerge from the most Southern part of Australia with Hobart’s Ben George having tasted success at the Rotax MAX Challenge Grand Finals in 2006. Ten years earlier George was crowned Australian Champion in the Junior National Heavy class. He is one of only a handful of Tasmanian drivers to don one of the prestigious green plates, however, that could all change in the coming years thanks to the emergence of the AWC Motorsport Academy. Announced late in 2015, the AWC Motorsport Academy has seen long-time supporter of the sport Andrew Walter join with Ambrose to develop the next generation of Tasmanian racing drivers. “Supporting and developing junior talent is vital to the long-term future of all sports, and I am proud to be able to launch the AWC Motorsport Academy,” said Walter. “The AWC Motorsport Academy provides the perfect stepping stone for Tasmanian karters who wish to compete at the elite level in karting in Australia.” In the Australian Kart Championship, the team fields two drivers in the ultra-competitive X30 Class with Brody Appleby and Nathan Zuj, who has been the benchmark in Tasmanian competition for several years. After having claimed a pair of Tasmanian Closed State Championships in recent years, Jackson Callow has this year made the step up into the KA2 class at the National level under the AWC Motorsport Academy
umbrella. After a very successful Cadet career Lachlan Dalton has made the transition into the KA4 Junior class for 2016. “Whilst this will be a learning year for our team and I look forward to seeing all drivers continually improve as the year continues. It’s also great that Tasmanian entities like SRT Logistics, Gowans Motor Group and Motorsports Tasmania have realised what we’re trying to achieve here and have come on board to support our program,” said Walter. The AWC Motorsport Academy drivers benefit from the guidance of National and State champion James Sera, who will be providing logistics, kart preparation, and mentoring, technical support provided by experienced Tasmanian karter and engine tuner Zane Wyatt, and under the watchful eye of Team Director Johnathan Males.

50 ROUNDS OF KZ2 T his weekend marks the 50th round for the KZ2 class at the National Championship level in Australian karting. The KZ2 class was first contested at the opening round of the 2002 Australian CIK Championship, where Jason Burns was victorious. There has been 18 different round winners in the high performance 6-speed gearbox class since that inaugural round. The now DPE Kart Technology boss Bart Price is the most successful driver of all time in the class with eight round wins to his name. Price was almost unstoppable aboard his Arrow chassis on his way to claiming back-
to-back crowns in 2004 and 2005. The only driver to claim a victory other than Price during his Championship years, was Western Australian Paul Williams. It’s no surprise to see Price’s dominance assist Arrow to be the leading chassis in the category with 15 wins from the 49 rounds contested, CRG is second on the list with 12 round wins. Should Daniel Price, Jonathon Mangos, Ben Redjepi or another local driver stand on the top step of the podium at Monarto this weekend, they will become the first South Australian driver to do so. While
Adelaide’s Tyson Pearce claimed the 2003 Championship aboard his South Australian-made Omega kart, he did so without winning a round. On a similar note, the last NSW driver to enjoy victory in the class was Justin Ruggier when he won the final round of the 2003 title chase in Geelong. Over the years the KZ2 class has produced some scintillating racing, none more so than at the most recent round where David Sera, Kyle Ensbey and Joshua Fife were dicing it out at speeds in excess of 140 km/h. This weekend should be no different as the drivers suit up to do battle for the 50th round of KZ2 action.

DARE TO DREAM
T
wenty-one years ago Zanardi Corse Australia boss David Brewer began his racing career in Canberra, little did he know that it would turn into a love affair with the sport of karting and provide him with a burning desire to succeed. “I first got into the sport just for a bit of fun as a teenager. It was great family fun back in the nineties, ever since then I’ve been involved in one way or another,” said Brewer. Since hanging up the helmet on a full-time basis a number of years ago Brewer has focused on assisting young South Australian drivers coming through the ranks - a philosophy his Zanardi Corse Australia brand is now built on. “When I was racing I had some really good people around me, they helped me learn a lot about the sport - especially in the early years,” said Brewer. “Despite my racing years being well and truly behind me I’m enjoying the sport now more than ever. It is a funny feeling as my the desire to compete is still there but it’s now from overseeing a team of young drivers and helping them come through the ranks rather than me driving myself.” The South Australian-based Zanardi Corse Australia team currently has a number of the State’s top young drivers in its stable with Blake Purdie and Christian Cowie two of the stars in the Cadet 12 ranks. At the other end of the scale in KZ2,
Ben Redjepi has been a significant improver throughout 2016 with the support of Brewer and his team, this weekend the Dillon brothers, Lee and Luke, will also be on the grid. With multiple Australian Speedway Championships between them, the Dillons are no strangers to success in motorsport. After both drivers sampling the top level of the Australian Kart Championship for a round during 2015 they’ll be set to test themselves again this weekend in Monarto. All up, there will be no less than 18 members of the Zanardi Corse Australia team in action this weekend at Monarto all of which will be under Brewer’s guidance as he ‘Dares to Dream’ and see one of his drivers claim their maiden Australian Kart Championship round victory.
