Safety and Security measures followed in the Karunya Institute of Technology and Sciences
Safety and Security of students and Staff are of paramount importance to Karunya Institute of Technology and Sciences (KITS). Keeping this principle in view, KITS has an effective system of security and safety in place. The campus – both the University and hostel premises – is under a 24×7 surveillance by a group of dedicated security personnel, who monitor the movement of every person entering and exiting the premises. They maintain an authentic recordofall visitorsin theform ofaregister, whichis periodicallyscrutinizedbythecompetent officials of the Institute.
They are ably assisted by the CCTV surveillance system in place. There are 912 cameras installed in all strategic points and directions of the Institute. The Control room, located at the center of the University, is manned by a team 24×7. The CCTVE Surveillance system has an effective back-up system, which makes vigilance and review at all times possible. The centralized monitoring system also serves as the instantaneous alert system, whenever any untoward incidents happen inside and in the immediate vicinity of the University.
Students and staff are expected to wear ID cards/tags. With a view to doubly ensure that only a bonafide student/ person entering through gates, the biometric system has been in operation not only in all entry/exist points, but also at building, lab entrances and lifts. The biometric system is integrated to the ERP system of the Institute, known as ‘Eduserve’, which generates and sends online reports to the designed officials of the Institute.
Fire-fighting equipments are placed in buildings and floors, as per the fire-safety norms of the Fireand RescueDepartment ofGoT. These equipments areperiodicallyre-calibratedto ensure their effective use at times of dire emergencies.
KITS follows a ‘Zero-tolerance’ policy towards drug abuse, smoking, drinking, eve-teasing and ragging
in letter and spirit. In pursuance of this policy, the Institute has special committees to look into specific complaints from students and staff. These Committees –Internal Complaints committee, Grievance Redressal Committee, Anti-ragging Committee, Women Harassment Prevention Cell, to name a few – are active. To enhance their effectiveness, besides the awareness display boards with sensitizing messages, the reach-out mobile number of each of these committees and those of the Karunya hospital are also prominently displayed in several vantage points of the Institute and in the hostels. “TELL US” is yet another grievance redressal mechanism in place at Karunya. Students and staff could send their complaints and suggestions to the top rung of the administration through this special email ID and be sure of getting a response within 48 hours.
KITS seeks to provide safeguards against any medical emergencies to its student and staff. Karunya Hospital - with its 100 beds in-patient wards, emergency and Causality wards, a wellequipped operation theater, X-ray and scanning equipments, out-patient care – is beacon light
–
for students and staff in this area and also for a people of several villages around Karunya Nagar.
Karunya Hospital, besides providing medicare and referral services, also offers counseling services by a professionally trained team of psychiatrists to the community of students and staff. The hospital has ambulance services to those students and staff who need such services. During the COVID-19 pandemic, Karunya Hospital helped to save the lives of several people in the local community. It has opened up special wards to treat those who were afflicted with COVID-19. It also undertook awareness campaigns inside the University and hospitals and amongthevillagersaround, educatingthemonbesthygienicpracticestobeadoptedinpersonal and social life.
