WELCOME LETTER Hello readers
Well, it has certainly been a wet and blustery couple of months since we last wrote! With the country taking a battering from three successive storms in the space of a week – Dudley, Eunice and Franklin – and with a great deal of rainfall as well, many homes and businesses in the local area have sadly been affected once again by flooding as well as storm damage.
However, our wonderful local community, as always, stepped up with offers of support and assistance. In the face of adversity we can always seem to rely on the strength of our community to get us through! Don’t forget, if you know someone who has gone out of their way to help, offer support, or even just be a shoulder to cry on at any time, for any reason, you can say a public ‘thank you’ and give them the recognition they deserve by nominating them for a ‘Friendship Blooms’ bouquet courtesy of All Things Local and the fabulous Floraline Florist (Gregory’s Way, Belper). Find out details and read about this issue’s deserving nominee on page 77. They say that March roars in like a lion and goes out like a lamb … so we’re looking forward to some nice spring-like weather. It’s the perfect time of year to get out in the garden. With Easter coming up and three Bank Holidays in April and May hopefully we will be able to enjoy our first barbecues of 2022! And, of course, now that Coronavirus restrictions have been lifted and we have the freedom to see who we like, when we like, we can once again enjoy socialising with friends and family. If you need any help getting your garden looking presentable for garden parties and gettogethers we have plenty of local businesses in our ‘Homes and Gardens’ section who will be
happy to help you out with everything from patios to pergolas, ponds to planting! Let’s face it, the weather can be all over the place in April and May though – even snow’s not unheard of! So, for those days when it’s best to stay indoors, you can keep yourself entertained by having a go at our Prize Crossword and Champagne Sudoku competitions (on pages 6 and 20 respectively). This issue’s crossword prize is Sunday lunch for two, kindly supplied by The Sitwell Arms in Horsley Woodhouse. And of course there are plenty of articles to read in the following pages too, with everything from recipes to local history! We hope you will enjoy this edition of All Things Local – we’ll be back in a couple of months with our June/July issue. Until then, take care and have a lovely spring! Team ATL

Pets Sourcing a Pet Where to source a pet is an essential consideration if you want to buy an animal. Licensed puppy farms, for example, are not illegal, but might not provide the ideal start for a dog. Unlicensed farms are illegal, as are third-party commercial puppy dealers. Any young animal coming from a breeder needs to be healthy and to have had care, attention and socialisation during its first few weeks of life. We should all be aware that what you see on the internet isn’t necessarily a true-life picture of the animal that you are buying. Animal rescue organisations report that over 80 per cent of calls regarding young pets concern those found online. Health issues can result from mass breeding and rearing within inhumane conditions, including lack of space, light, warmth and inappropriate feeding. Although the internet is an excellent place to learn about animals of all descriptions, word of mouth is generally the best way to actually find a pet. Using personal
recommendations means that you can check out addresses and hopefully see several members of an animal family, including at least one of the parents. Animal shelters should also be considered very seriously because the rate of pet abandonment during the last few months has increased by more than 25 per cent. This means that more animals than ever before are looking to be rehomed. There are hundreds of dogs, cats, rabbits, hamsters, rats and even horses looking for new owners, and one of them could be the perfect pet for you. By Caroline Knight

Pillow Talk Did you know that May 29th is ‘Put a Pillow on Your Fridge Day’? This is a modern interpretation of placing some linen in the larder. This tradition originated in the 1900s and is said to bring good luck and fortune to the family. Historical pillows The pillows of yore were certainly not the lovely, cushioned items we use today. Pillows of the past were used to prevent insects crawling in your ears and setting up home for the night. This practical nature meant they were often made of rock and stone. In ancient China, pillows were fashioned from jade, bronze and bamboo.
If a single woman sleeps with a piece of wedding cake under their pillow, they will dream of their future husband. Either that or end up having a midnight feast. Pillow weight According to some studies, up to a third of a pillow’s weight could be composed of sweat, dead skin cells, dust mites and their droppings. Sweet dreams…
Royal pillows Ancient Greeks and Romans valued comfort a little more and crafted pillows from cloth, straw and feathers. However, many people regarded the use of soft pillows as a sign of weakness. King Henry VII banned the use of pillows for this reason. Only pregnant women were allowed to rest their heads in comfort. Professional pillows Pillow fighting has gone professional! The first ever Pillow Fight Championship (PFC) was held this year in Florida. Although most competitors were martial arts trained, the competition is open for anyone to enter. With a $5000 prize up for grabs, it might be worth training for. However, check beforehand whether historical pillows are permitted in the ring. A pillow fighting tip to remember – never challenge Death to a pillow fight… unless you can handle the reaper cushions. Dream pillows As we lay our heads upon our pillows each night, we are transported to our dreams. This connection has led to people keeping items like crystals or worry dolls under their pillows to promote restful sleep. In some cultures, it is recommended to sleep with a knife under the pillow to ward off nightmares. This sounds a bit extreme. It might also frighten the tooth fairy or even give her nightmares. Pillow superstitions Guests in Asia might only be provided with one pillow. Any extra pillows might tempt a spirit to rest next to them.

Travel Palermo
On the north-west coast of Sicily, Palermo nestles around a lovely natural harbour looking out to the Tyrrhenian Sea. In this deep-water bay surrounded by mountains, myriad civilisations came and went, each golden age leaving its mark on the city. With its palaces and churches, the capital claims several UNESCO sites, starting with the medieval cathedral mirroring the city’s history over the centuries. Now in neo-classical style, the splendid interior can be complemented by a ‘rooftop walk’ with panoramic views. Other must-sees include the Baroque gem of Gesu Church and the Palatin Chapel, famous for Byzantine mosaics, in the Norman Palace. A former residence of Sicilian rulers, this has been beautifully restored and is the seat of Sicily’s Regional Assembly. Also built for royal pleasure were Cuba and Zisa, superb examples of Norman architecture in Eastern style. But most intriguing perhaps is the Chinese Pavilion, designed in 1799 for the future King of the Two Sicilies. Lord Nelson and his mistress were among the guests.
Vucciria, awash with melons, peaches, tomatoes, aubergines, herbs, walnuts and more, plus delicious orange juice squeezed on the spot.
Heritage aside, Palermo has a lot to offer along its tree-lined avenues. There’s luxury shopping in the high street but the heart of town is around Politeama, a favourite place to meet family or friends on the spacious piazzas that seem to flow into each other. Visitors gaze at the nearby theatres, Garibaldi with its circular colonnade and triumphal arch and Massimo, the largest opera house in Italy, but the locals just like to sit in the shade and watch the world go by. They call it ‘piazza culture’ and this is the time to sip a cool drink on a café terrace or feast on glorious Sicilian ice cream. Yet the prettiest square, they say, is Piazza Pretoria with its monumental fountain festooned in nude classical statues.
Within walking distance, the Botanical Garden invites you to relax among water features, palms, shrubs and some 12,000 species of plants. Most exciting is the giant fig tree with aerial roots, and you might spot the parrots that escaped from Via Giulia, the city’s oldest park, loved for its marble sundial and alcoves in Moorish style. Now you can almost hear the waves as the promenade beckons along the sea, laced in meandering paths and grassland full of wild flowers. Boats glisten in the marina, rigging tinkles and, in the fishing harbour, men mend their nets on a flotilla of blue boats. Then just out of town you will find turquoise water, tingling sand and fragrant hills with fabulous views.

Potted plants pop up along the cobbles, washing hangs from the balconies and here and there a secret chapel might just take your breath away. One of the best is the Oratorio di Santa Cita, dripping in gleaming white stucco with angels and playful cherubs.

Just a Thought... Inclusion Revolution
I was required to fill in a hospital consent form recently for my daughter. The form asked for the following pieces of information ‘Mother’s Name and Occupation’ and ‘Father’s Name and Occupation.’ I was astounded. In the year 2022 we are still assuming that a family is made up of two opposite sex parents.
that if your family does not have one mother and one father then you are abnormal, unusual, difficult to process. Inclusion is the mark of any society of note or worth and we are failing on multiple levels – this is just a small example with an enormous impact. So I have rallied for change because creating real change needs all of us to stand up and have our thoughts heard. For all our families, our friends, our fellow humans it is time to act. It may not be easy but it is possible, and it needs all of us – including you, dear reader.
I asked myself what the same sex parents should do here. Should they misgender themselves to fit the box? Or what about solo parent families who may be so due to a variety of painful reasons including death or abuse? I suppose they should just live with the painful reminder of a blank space staring back at them. How about families where another family member has parental responsibility, like a grandfather or an aunt for example – are they less of a parent because they are not a mother or a father? This is a blatantly archaic statement of exclusion. It says loud and clear

Beer Mild As we approach the month of May my mind starts to think of this underrated beer style, with CAMRA designating this month ‘The Month of Mild’. Normally, during May, good local real ale and craft beer establishments celebrate by ensuring that they have at least one mild on at any given time, with many breweries brewing this beer seasonally for just this time of year. Modern mild ales are mainly dark-coloured with an ABV ranging between 3% to 3.6%, although there are lighter-hued examples as well as stronger examples reaching 6% ABV and higher. With a predominantly malty palate, it originated in Britain in the 17th century and originally meant a ‘young’ ale as opposed to a ‘stale’ aged or old ale. It is now more often interpreted as a beer that is mildly hopped. Once sold in most pubs, mild experienced a sharp decline in popularity in the 1960s and was in danger of completely disappearing, but the increase of microbreweries has led to a modest renaissance and an increasing number of milds (sometimes labelled ‘dark’) being brewed. Until the 1960s, mild was the most popular beer style in England. Pockets of demand remain, particularly in the West Midlands and North West England, but it has been largely ousted by bitter and lager elsewhere. If you can find any of these beers, they come highly recommended: Boxcar – Dark Mild 3.6% Boxcar, based in Bethnal Green, pride themselves on making fresh, seasonal and experimental beers for a modern world. And this mild is a great example of doing just
18
that. The malt profile brings fruit, chocolate and nut flavours to the fore and, by adjusting the water profile, Boxcar have been able to enhance the mouthfeel and body, making it a beer that really has a lot of flavour for one with a modest ABV. Sarah Hughes – Dark Ruby 6% On many people’s list of beers to ‘try before you die’, this Dark Ruby mild combines a balance of intense colour and flavour, delivering a deep malty backbone complemented with hints of caramel and chocolate and a finish of fruit cake. Still brewed on the original premises at the Beacon Hotel, in the shadow of the Sedgley Beacon hills, this English Heritage listed building with a national important historic pub interior is still a place where time stood still. Ampersand Brew Co – Forenoon 3.5% This mild ale is brewed with additions of milk, sugar and cold steeped coffee beans. Previously they have used a mocha blend of beans roasted in Norfolk by local roaster Tropic Coffee. Expect a smooth full body from the lactose with dark caramel and chocolate flavours from the coffee. By Sean McKeown Follow Sean on Twitter @joonip3r

Word on Wine
wines while old vines give more structured, complex and alcoholic wine which ages well.
At our February meeting, we had a tasting of Spanish wines from John Hattersley Wines in Bakewell and I was reintroduced to a great red wine that I have previously reviewed, from just outside Valencia in Spain.
This wine is 100% Bobal grape and comes from vines around 1000m altitude and 60km east of Valencia. The area benefits from hot, dry summers, cold nights and poor limestone soil which keeps the vines relatively clear of diseases. The estate is dedicated to organic production and produces crisp white wines as well as this concentrated, fruitdriven, spicy red wine. The wine is produced from the oldest low yield vines grown in loam plains and is fermented in barrels before undergoing malolactic fermentation, then being stored for 6 months in French barriques before bottling.
The wine is the ‘Pasión de Bobal’ 2019 made by Bodega Sierra Norte at Finca Fuentesseca in the Utiel Requena region of Spain for Boutinot wine in the UK, and it was just as good this time round! The Bobal grape is Spain’s second most planted grape and is native to the Utiel Requena region. It is rarely found outside the region and makes up to 80% of the region’s red wine. The name comes for the Latin word ‘boval’ meaning bull’s head, as the bunches of grapes resemble the head of a bull. The variety does well in this warm area of Spain and previously has been used as a ‘work horse’ being blended with lesser wines by adding depth to the wines. Younger vines tend to produce light fruity

Derbyshire Walking: Higger Tor & Burbage Rocks from Longshaw Distance – 5.3 miles / 8.6 km Ascent – 600 feet / 182 metres Time – 3 hours 20 minutes Grade – easy/moderate Author – Lou Johnson Start – OS grid reference SK266800 Postcode S11 7TZ (approx. location only) what3words start: senior.jumped.fish
This short half day Peak District walk is a route full of contrasts. In the early stages the walk crosses some wild moorland and includes the well-known rocky viewpoint of Higger Tor. From here the views across the valley to the gritstone Burbage Edge are excellent. The return route follows the infant Burbage Brook which includes a delightful section towards the end of the walk. Finally you have a chance to explore some of the grounds of the National Trust’s Longshaw Estate. Refreshments are available at the start and end in Longshaw Lodge. The Route 1. The start is the main National Trust car park for the Longshaw Estate (grid ref. SK266800). After parking, follow the signed footpath towards Longshaw Lodge. On reaching the main drive turn right and walk to the B6521. Cross this road
carefully and bear right to take a signed footpath on your left (grid ref. SK265802). 2. Follow this clear path through light woodland until you reach the busy A6187 at Burbage Bridge. Cross when safe and follow the road to the left. Once across the bridge take the first footpath on the right.
3. The onward route crosses Hathersage Moor. It can be a little wet underfoot after rain. The path is distinct and well-trodden trending roughly northwards to Carl Wark, an ancient fort which rises above the surrounding moorland. 4. Descend a little and keep on the same bearing towards Higger Tor which is the next objective. This gritstone mass rises quite sharply although the ascent is relatively short lived. Once you have reached the top it is worth spending a few minutes exploring as there are some fine views to be enjoyed in all directions. 5. Continue in the same direction leaving Higger

Before you reach the road turn left (grid ref. SK261806), cross the footbridge over Burbage Brook and follow the path down the stream. This is a pretty stretch and in fine weather is a popular place to relax and perhaps paddle in the brook. Tor. Bear right at the first major junction of paths to walk parallel to the road on your left. This road is rather quaintly known as Fiddler’s Elbow, probably because of its alignment. 6. On reaching the road (grid ref. SK260829) bear right and cross Upper Burbage Bridge. From here you have a lovely view of your return walk.
7. Once across Upper Burbage Bridge turn right and follow the broad path along the east side of the valley. To your left are Burbage Rocks – a favourite spot for climbers. This is easy walking and you will get a fine view of Higger Tor on your right as you gently descend. 8. You reach the A6187 just east of Burbage Bridge (grid ref. SK262805). Cross this busy main road and take the footpath opposite. After a short way you reach the path used in the early stages of the walk.
10. Continue down to the next footbridge (grid ref. SK257800). Cross this bridge and walk up to the B6521. Cross the road and bear right to take a signed footpath on the left. This leads up Granby Wood, passes a small lake and leads to Longshaw Lodge and back to the start.

Footnotes: Deep Vein Thrombosis Deep vein thrombosis, or DVT, develops in one in 3,000 people under the age of 40, rising to one in 500 in the over 80s. One very important factor leading to the increased risk associated with ageing is immobility. A DVT is a clot that forms in a deep vein of the leg. Reduced blood flow in the legs from sitting in one position for a length of time can lead to DVT with symptoms of tenderness, pain and swelling in the affected leg. The pain usually feels worse on standing and walking. The greatest danger occurs if part of the clot breaks off, as it can move around the bloodstream until it becomes lodged in a narrower vein. If this is in the lung, it causes a blockage known as a pulmonary embolism which can be life-threatening. Much has been made of the dangers of flying, but long coach and car journeys can be just as dangerous – as can sitting in one place for long periods of time at home watching TV! Regular movement is important and the legs should be stretched at least every 2-3 hours, preferably by walking a short distance. Rotating the ankle, tapping the foot and wriggling the toes all work the muscles of the leg and help to pump blood around the leg. So please keep moving! By Peter Waugh, Amber Feet

Health, Beauty & Fitness
Fitness Matters
Managing Stress You will never get rid of stress completely and, as mentioned, stress can actually be healthy in some situations.
The Impact of Stress on Our Bodies I am always talking to clients about just how much stress can impact the body. You can’t fool the body – you may think you’re ok but your body may tell you differently. When you’re sitting in traffic or late for a meeting and watching the minutes tick away our hypothalamus, a tiny control tower in the brain, orders: ‘Send in the stress hormones!’ These are the same hormones that trigger your body’s ‘fight or flight’ response. Your heart races, your breath quickens, and your muscles get ready for action. This response was designed to protect your body in an emergency by preparing you to react quickly. But when the stress response keeps firing, day after day, it could put your health at serious risk. Stress is a natural reaction to life experiences. Everyone suffers stress from time to time, from everyday responsibilities like work and family to serious life events such as a death in the family, redundancies, or an illness. For immediate, short-term situations, stress can be beneficial – it can help you cope with potentially serious situations. However, for a lot of people this stress response doesn’t stop firing. The levels stay elevated which can massively impact on health.
The key is managing your stress. Identify the things that cause stress (your triggers) and figure out which of these things can be avoided. Find ways to cope with those negative stressors that can’t be avoided. Managing your stress levels may help lower your risk of stress-related diseases and it’ll help you feel better on a daily basis, too. Basic ways to start managing stress: - Maintain a healthy diet - Aim for 7-8 hours of sleep each night - Exercise regularly (boxing is amazing for releasing stress!) - Minimize caffeine and alcohol intake - Stay socially connected so you can get and give support - Make time for rest and relaxation or self-care - Learn meditation techniques such as deep breathing If you can’t manage your stress, or if it’s accompanied by anxiety or depression, see your doctor right away. These conditions can be managed with treatment, as long as you seek help. You might also consider consulting with a therapist or other mental health professional. Motoring Lexus NX Review What is it? The new NX is the first time Lexus has offered a plug-in hybrid powertrain (PHEV), and the mid-sized SUV has been made more competitive with rivals such as Volvo and BMW. This is Lexus’ best-selling model in the UK. What’s new? There’s a newlook exterior, new powertrains and a more enjoyable driving experience. Key changes are the new infotainment system and redesigned interior. The whole car is slightly larger than the old NX and has extra safety and convenience technology. What’s under the bonnet? The powertrain options are 350h and 450h+, both with a petrol engine paired to electric motors on both axles, giving 241bhp and 305bhp respectively. The 350h regular hybrid reaches 60mph in 7.7 seconds, compared with 6.3 seconds in the PHEV. The PHEV’s bigger battery gives it a 47-mile electric-only range. Economy figures were disappointing – although 53 per cent of our journey was on electric-only power, overall consumption was about 36mpg (compared to the pointless official measurements of up to 314mpg). So keep the battery topped up! What’s it like to drive? Even our test car in F-Sport trim gave good ride quality, with the smooth, silent electric motors making the NX feel refined. The engine can be quite gruff, but the modern CVT gearbox is no longer a weak link. How does it look? The firm’s angular design ethos and imposing front grilles make it stand out from the crowd. The spindle grille is more upright, while the chrome frame has been ditched. The rear end is muscular and the car looks fairly compact.
What’s it like inside? The cockpit is familiarly Lexus, but without the overly complicated cabins of previous models. The high-resolution touchscreen is a step up, with clear graphics and quick responses. It has a great driving position, high-quality materials and there is plenty of space for passengers. What’s the spec like? Entry-level models are well-equipped – starting at £38,300 for the 350h and £48,800 for the 450h+, this feels like the best-value option. Standard equipment includes extensive safety equipment, dual-zone climate control, reversing camera, heated front seats, LED headlights and 18-inch alloys. The Premium Pack is standard in the 450h+, adding privacy glass, heated steering wheel, wireless charger and more. F Sport models start at £47,300 (350h) or £54,800 (450h+) and include adaptive variable sports suspension, an extra drive mode, sports steering wheel, F Sport leather upholstery and 20-inch alloys, plus the Premium Plus pack of LED cornering lights, larger touchscreen display and adaptive high-beam. These models have an optional Takumi pack, adding a Mark Levinson sound system, head-up display and sunroof (450h+) or panoramic roof (350h). The top-spec Takumi starts from £51,800 (350h) or £57,800 (450h+) and includes fully automated parking, the stereo upgrade, a ‘card key’, leather upholstery and 20-inch alloys. Verdict The new NX is a genuine alternative to premium marques like BMW and Mercedes-Benz. Comparing rationally, it’s difficult to recommend the NX over, say, a Volvo XC60 or an Audi Q5, but it won’t disappoint.

Net Cars If you are looking to buy or sell a car, look no further than the local, reliable, friendly father and daughter team at Net Cars, Ilkeston. Dave and Carly Betts have combined experience of over 40 years in the motor trade, and take huge pride in the vehicles they sell. Focusing on quality over quantity, they generally stock around 18 cars at any time, from those ideal for first-time drivers to larger family cars or 4x4s. “We’re very fussy about the cars we stock” explains Carly. “We sell reliable, value for money cars to suit every budget and everything is thoroughly checked, sold with an MOT, HPI clear, valeted and smelling nice! We provide warranties on all cars with family-run warranty company Bluechip, with the option to extend warranties too. We are also an AA assured dealership which means as well as working to the highest standards by passing additional AA checks, we include free AA breakdown cover with every sale for your peace of mind.” They also buy cars too, offering the most competitive rates they can. So, if you have a car to sell don’t head online or to a large car superstore for a valuation – give Net Cars a call instead. They will come to you to value and collect your car at a time that suits; it’s the easiest way to sell! If you’re looking to upgrade they also offer part-exchange and, to further ease the financial burden of purchasing a car, finance is available on most cars over £2,000. They can arrange all of this for you.
The family-run business is pleased to have gained 5* Autotrader approval and has over 400 verified Autotrader customer reviews. “Our reviews mean everything to us – they show us we’re doing things right and our customers are happy. We always strive to sell the best vehicles we can and go the extra mile to ensure a smooth, convenient and hassle-free purchase. We offer honest advice with absolutely no pressure to buy. All we want is for you to be happy and confident with your new car!” For more information visit www.netcarsilkeston.co.uk or call 0115 9699815. You can also text or Whatsapp 07734 476530. Viewings are available by appointment at Single Ply Yard, Ilkeston, Derbyshire DE7 8JF and nationwide delivery is available on all vehicles.

Gardening Plant a Tree for the Jubilee: The Queen’s Green Canopy Her Majesty the Queen has enjoyed 70 years on the throne this year and we are urged to ‘plant a tree for the jubilee’ to create the Queen’s Green Canopy. This national tree initiative encourages everyone to plant trees – from a single garden specimen to an entire woodland. It is hoped that individuals, community groups, schools, businesses and councils will all take part in a bid to green up the UK and help fight the climate crisis. Trees absorb pollution, store carbon, produce oxygen, stabilise the soil, help prevent flooding, improve biodiversity and provide shelter. Some trees are better than others in terms of eco credentials. Oak, beech, London plane, black walnut, many larger maples and eucalyptus are some of the best at carbon storage, and larger trees are generally better than smaller varieties. Broadleaved species have a larger surface area of leaves, which enables them to carry out photosynthesis. They absorb water, sunlight and carbon dioxide in order to produce oxygen. Oaks are kings of the habitat providers, but smaller trees, including a wide range of birch, are excellent too. Some smaller trees and shrubs excel at this particular role, including elder, spindle, blackthorn, wild cherry, crab apple, hawthorn and holly. The key lies in planting a diverse mix of species in order to provide as many benefits as possible to wildlife. Think in terms of food sources as well as creatures. Insects are just as important when considering the food chain. Pests and diseases Avoid planting a monoculture of one species of tree, as disease can potentially kill the entire group. This applies to street trees as much as it does to hedges, copses and woodland. Instead, include a mix of species, which will be more resilient. It is also sensible to extend the range of trees in the UK to include non-native, hardy trees. Always source trees

from reliable, ‘plant-healthy’ suppliers. Be aware of the general health of trees, including disease that causes loss of limbs, thus posing a safety risk in public places. • Ash dieback is likely to cause the loss of up to 80 per cent of this tree in the UK. Affected trees near public areas should be removed. • Phytophthora ramorum is sometimes called a water mould. It causes bleeding canker symptoms on trees, including larch and sweet chestnut in addition to conifers such as Douglas fir. It can also cause sudden oak death. • Phytophthora pluvialis has recently been discovered in western hemlock and Douglas fir in the West Country. It causes needles to turn brown and drop, eventually resulting in dieback. • Oak processionary moth is an insect pest (present in London and surrounding counties) with silken nests and processions of caterpillars that defoliate oak trees, thus leaving them vulnerable and unable to carry out photosynthesis. • The fungal disease massaria is spreading amongst London plane trees, including those at Buckingham Palace and some of the royal parks. It causes lesions on branches, which die back and are eventually shed. By Caroline Knight

Property Matters
your first port of call. Their imagination and vision can yield unexpected results from even the most awkward of sites.
Too much garden and not enough time for gardening? Some of you out there have very large gardens that you either don’t want or don’t need. Turn them into building plots, make some money, put your lawn mower away and put your feet up…
Is it the right time? Most Local Authorities are short on housing supply – they need more sites with planning approval for houses. Whilst they would love to meet this need with just large sites of, say, 300 houses, the small sites with just one or two plots still contribute to their housing targets. So, why wait? If you think you may be sitting on a plot of land you have nothing to lose!
Are You Sitting on a Building Plot?
Not everyone can do this, but if you have an unusually wide and/or long garden, especially if you live on the corner of two streets, there’s a strong chance you may have a building plot! Reduce the risks and maximise your profit Small scale developers and certainly individuals looking to build their dream home need the comfort of knowing the site has planning permission. It doesn’t cost a lot to get what’s known as ‘outline planning permission’ compared to the uplift in the value of the land. Don’t waste your money having full designs prepared and obtaining full planning permission – the people thinking of buying your site may have their own ideas and be unwilling to pay more for your expensively arrived at design solution. Employ a good designer A good local architectural practice with experience in housing that knows the local planning policies should be

Watch points: Getting planning permission in a conservation area is a bit trickier. As a general rule you can’t apply for outline permission in a conservation area – most Local Planning Authorities will ask for a full detailed planning permission. As with conservation areas you can’t get outline permission on listed buildings. You have to prepare and submit a fully detailed design and planning application. If you’re in greenbelt land – forget it! The only things generally permitted in greenbelt are those that preserve the open nature of the greenbelt, like a golf course. Book Reviews: Books for Wellbeing The Comfort Book Matt Haig Author Matt Haig has been very open about his struggles with depression. His latest book is a collection of sayings, thoughts and recollections that offer comfort when times are hard. Many of us find it difficult to focus when we’re feeling down, anxious or burnt out. With The Comfort Book, you can just flick through and read the quote that catches your eye. That might be a story snippet, a list, music recommendations or a recipe. Stolen Focus: Why You Can’t Pay Attention Johann Hari We often berate ourselves for spending too much time scrolling through social media or getting distracted when we should be concentrating. Johann Hari explains why the inability to focus is not a personal failing – it’s an all-too-common side effect of modern life. Crucially, he also shares sciencebacked advice to help you reclaim your ability to focus. Good Vibes, Good Life Vex King Stuck in a rut and not sure how to move forward? In Good Vibes, Good Life, Vex King gives practical and inspirational tips for tackling negative thoughts, improving self-esteem and finding the motivation to make positive changes. Ultimately, his goal is to help you to both love yourself for who you are now and to make the changes that will improve your life for the better.

Broken (in the best possible way) Jenny Lawson We all need a good belly laugh sometimes. Broken gives you that, plus so much more. As the blurb says, it’s a book about ‘living, surviving and thriving with anxiety’. It’s written like a stream of consciousness in parts, as Lawson shares anecdotes and lessons from her life. Raw, honest, relatable. The Sleep Book Dr Guy Meadows Anyone who struggles to sleep knows the impact it can have on daily life. The Sleep Book isn’t a recent release, but it’s one of the most well-researched – Dr Meadows has worked with more than 2,000 insomniacs. The result is a five-week plan to solve insomnia, mainly focusing on mindfulness and ACT (‘act and commitment’) therapy. It’s not a magic cure, but the advice is practical and easy to follow. Reflections Holly Willoughby In Reflections, TV presenter Holly Willoughby shares her ‘toolkit’ for living a happier, more connected life. She talks of the rituals, techniques and positive habits that have helped her to reconnect, tackle anxiety and feel more grounded. It’s a deeply personal book – she discusses body image, burnout and other challenges – but it’s not an autobiography. While most of us don’t lead a celebrity lifestyle, there are still many nuggets of wisdom that readers will find useful. By Kate Duggan

Short Story The Frosty Campaign “It keeps making that awful whining noise.” Valerie had interrupted Brian’s programme to announce she intended to buy a new freezer. “And I’m fed up with going out to the garage to kick it.” “I’ve not heard anything.” Brian took out his ear plugs. He had noticed a strange noise in recent weeks but had just put it down to workmen digging up the tarmac. “Besides, the exercise will do you good.” “It’s not like I can’t afford it.” He nearly choked on his custard cream. Ever since she’d won the bingo Valerie had been on a spending spree – posh loo roll, that scented candle and butter instead of margarine. The money had gone to her head. She would fritter it all away and he would never get any benefit. He’d got his eye on one of those electric foot massagers for his bunions and had left the catalogue open on the coffee table. So far Valerie hadn’t taken the hint. “Waste of time getting a new one.” He turned up the TV volume (that freezer really was making a racket). “We never use it for anything anyway.” Valerie had narrowed her eyes and returned to the kitchen to bash some pans together, which she always did when she was sulking. Since then, things had taken a strange turn at mealtimes. Valerie had, in thirty years of marriage, always been an excellent cook, but the menu became experimental. On Monday she’d served up what she insisted was chicken pie with mash and peas. It turned out to be apple pie, ruined by a lathering of gravy. Tuesday was a single fish finger and a spoonful of spaghetti bolognaise. On Wednesday things got even weirder – baked bean vol-au-vents.
the back of the freezer.” Valerie unfolded a napkin on her lap. “You know, the freezer you claim we never use.” “Well, if this is all you use it for, we’re better off without it,” Brian muttered glumly (he’d been looking forward to his mid-week oven chips). “It’s giving me indigestion.” On Thursday Valerie cheerfully served up chilli con carne and a frostbitten turkey leg she claimed was left over from Christmas. Brian wasn’t sure which Christmas because they’d gone to his mother’s for the last three years. “I’ve changed my mind about buying a new one after all,” Valerie shouted over the sound of the freezer as she cleared away the dinner trays. “There’s plenty of life left in the old one yet.” “Thank goodness for that.” It had been a long, testing week for Brian’s digestive system. “You’ve saved yourself some money there. You should treat yourself.” “Do you think so, Brian?” Valerie smiled, drying her hands on a tea towel. “Something rash and indulgent?” “Why don’t you sit down, love?” Brian seized his opportunity and pulled the coffee table nearer, arranging the catalogue pages. “I bet your feet are killing you, what with all that running back and forth to the garage?” “They really are,” Valerie rested her feet on the table and wriggled her toes, “but I think I know what’ll fix that.” “That’s nice, ducky,” Brian nodded, relieved she had finally taken the bait. “I’m sure you know what’s best.”
“Have you seen this recipe in one of your magazines?” Brian asked warily. “Because I think you should cancel your subscription.”
“So I’ve booked myself into a health spa for the weekend.” Valerie plumped the cushion behind her. “You don’t mind fending for yourself, do you? There’s plenty of food in the freezer.”
“They’re frozen vol-au-vent cases. I found them at

The Diary of a Local Mum Mum Guilt
When we join this rollercoaster journey called parenting there are many things we’re unprepared for, but one thing I was particularly in the dark about was the phenomenon known as ‘Mum Guilt’. From day one I was immediately aware that I really didn’t know what I was doing with this parenting lark; every day really was a school day. What I didn’t know was that every little thing I did or didn’t do from now on would come with a hefty side order of guilt. And unfortunately, as my kids have grown older, this does not abate. Those feelings of ‘Have I done it right?’ or ‘Have I done enough?’ are constant. In the early days you worry about whether you should let them cry or pick them up, whether you’re cuddling them too much or not enough, if they’re hot or cold, if you should take them out or if they’ve been in the car seat for too long, whether they’re eating enough/too much/the right things … the list is endless. You can berate yourself and tie your tired mind into knots worrying about the possible consequences of making the ‘wrong’ choice at any stage. There’s always a nagging feeling that everything you do or say could impact their growth, development or future happiness and that’s an overwhelming responsibility. As they get older, this relentless questioning of your decisions and actions continues: ‘Did I shout too much?’, ‘Should I have said yes when I said no/no when I said yes?’, ‘Have they had too much screen time?’, ‘Are they watching the wrong things?’, ‘Do they get enough sleep?’, ‘Are they involved in too many activities/not enough activities?’, ‘Should I be working more/should I be at home more?’ You second guess Every. Single. Thing … it’s utterly exhausting (not to mention, utterly pointless!). Often these feelings of guilt are entirely contradictory. One day we can feel bad for not giving our kids enough space and then the next day
we’re feeling guilty for spending time away from them. We can feel guilty for working too much and then feel guilty that we’re not working more and earning more. Even ‘expert’ advice can be contradictory, which doesn’t help. How can we do the ‘right’ thing when no-one seems to know what that is? Some things are totally out of our hands, but that doesn’t seem to stop the guilt – recently my son’s birthday plans had to be changed because I’d come down with the dreaded virus (this was at a time when self-isolation rules were still in place … plus, I felt really ill!). I knew this was beyond my control but did that stop me feeling incredibly guilty about it? Did it heck! I felt personally responsible for ruining his birthday when actually a) it wasn’t ‘ruined’, just rearranged and b) he really wasn’t bothered anyway! These feelings of guilt can come sometimes stem from our own internal insecurities but often they’re a result of outside influences or comparisons, compounded by the curated versions of people’s lives that we scroll through daily on social media. We know on a rational level that it’s not real life but that doesn’t stop us striving for this false objective. Comparison is risky in all aspects of life but in parenthood – the journey that we’re trying to navigate in the dark with no map – it’s really ill-advised. The confident, happy, smiling faces you see online are probably concealing just as much guilt and self-doubt as you’re carrying. Those feelings may be nonsensical, irrational and totally pointless but you can bet your bottom dollar everybody has them. The daft thing is, no-one else judges us as much as we do ourselves. So, next time the guilt washes over you try to stop for a moment. Take a deep breath and give yourself a break. You’re doing the best you can… just like everybody else is. Pobody’s Nerfect.

Belper School Welcome to Belper! Belper School’s creative writing group interviews two new additions to the School’s Senior Leadership Team…
Gavin Warren GavinBrookes Brookesand andMatilde Matilde Warren
Having recently joined Belper School as the Senior Designated Safeguarding Lead and Assistant Headteacher, Gavin Brookes began his role amidst the chaos of home learning due to the pandemic. Despite that, he has still made himself very involved in the community, being a resident here himself, he notes “the significance of a community on a school”. Gavin also highlighted that, for him “supporting students” and “shaping a better future for students” roots in pastoral support. Furthermore, placing students at the centre of a school is the way to “ensure students have the opportunity to develop as people in their lives beyond school life”. In his out of school hours, he is also a devoted scout leader… Whether it be holding up a tent, or holding up expectations of behaviour, Gavin is always ensuring students have the right tools to survive in and out of the classroom.
learning and retrieval. Matilde is keen to apply even more strategies and other steps to better our education. So, we were obviously intrigued to find out the thought process behind it all (and find out a little more about our new member of the Senior Leadership Team).
Why teaching?! …Was the next question. Gavin revealed a heart-warming story about why he wanted to work with and support children. He attempted to begin his career as an accountant, but decided it was not for him (we don’t hold him accountable!). “I was genuinely at a loss,” he states. After getting some advice from a PE teacher, he started assisting with their PE lessons as a volunteer. What he described as his “defining moment,” was helping a student go from a fear of the water to gaining an aptitude for swimming over a 6 week time period. “It was an incredible feeling, watching someone succeed.” After that, he knew he wanted a career in teaching.
Matilde believes that education is “transformational”. She has been working on research like this for the last 27 years. This research includes everything from “how students learn best” to “how teachers can teach in the best way possible”. Matilde made it clear that teachers are also learners too and this is something we students can definitely forget! She has also told us that she, like Gavin, places students at the centre of the school and “loves to learn and loves working with young people” and can’t wait to work on new strategies to move us and the school forward. In her spare time, Matilde loves the outdoors and walking in the countryside and we are definitely grateful that one of those walks has led her to Belper School.
Having not only one, but two, brilliant new additions to Belper School, we also interviewed Matilde Warden, our Deputy Headteacher who has recently implemented the ‘knowledge organisers’ for key stage 3 pupils to help with their
68 68
Matilde has a history in education stating that she has “worked in a lot of schools in the East Midlands”. When she applied for the role at Belper School, she “got a sense that the students were at the centre of everything” and felt that it is “a welcoming and caring place”. Her role in the school includes finding and researching better ways for the students to “increase their learning” and we are very excited to see these implementations come into fruition over the next few months and years so that we can get back on track with our learning in school after the previous few years.

Local History
Something from Strutts… Historical Find at Strutts Community Centre Over a century after the opening of the brand new and hugely promising Herbert Strutt School in 1908 the building still holds many reminders of its grammar school days. Some of these are obvious, such as the achievement boards displayed round the hall, whilst others have been found in lofts, cupboards and storerooms. A few years ago we found two impressive large sports trophies, dating back to the early years, which were discoloured and badly dented. We decided to upgrade them by polishing the wood and removing the central shields to push out the dents. To our surprise the removed shields revealed two copies of the newspaper The Daily Sketch, dated October 31st 1913 and November 5th 1913 respectively. Not only did these dates coincide with the recently opened Strutts School beginning to recognise the achievements of its students, but it also highlighted a very important period in our country’s history. In 1913 it was little over a year since the unthinkable loss of the Titanic and in eleven months’ time the country would be plunged into the dark years of war, which would decimate an entire generation. A significant period of history indeed.
So what is on the covers of these newspapers? Well, the mood is upbeat and carefree! One contains images of immaculately groomed men and women engaged in tango tea dancing, the latest London craze. On the other, Duke Ernest, son of the Duke of Cumberland, is seen riding in triumph through the streets of Germany in the company of Kaiser Wilhelm, provoking an irony which is only clear in retrospect. Other articles include a review of James Barrie’s The Adored One, graphic pictures of Portsmouth in flood and advice as to how to look good in the London fog! There are weddings, funerals and tips to make you an economical housewife. The editorial asks if we are bored with the tango. (Strictly, no we aren’t!) The many students who held up these trophies, celebrating their sporting successes over the years, were unaware of the little scraps of history buried within them which, but for chance, might have remained undiscovered forever. These students have become part of this glimpse of the past; through those names engraved for all time. Also, I can’t help thinking about the hands which folded those newspapers; were they holding a gun just a short time later? Or did the craftsman survive the war and go on to produce more beautiful artefacts which would still be treasured a century later? We will never know. Amber Valley Stroke Group Amber Valley Stroke Group has been supporting stroke survivors and their carers for almost forty years and has recently received substantial funding from the National Lottery to help them to continue their excellent work, supporting anyone who has been affected by stroke at any age.

Amber Valley MP Nigel Mills and Town Mayor Councillor EmmasWilliams visited the Amber Valley Stroke Group to present the £10,000 cheque and join in some activities with the members. A games afternoon was planned, with participants competing for the honour of being the first recipient of the John C Ward memorial cup – a tribute to a much-loved former member of the group. MP Nigel Mills joined in with the games, trying his hand at a spot of indoor curling! The games afternoon was just an example of the regular activities that the group enjoys together, which are not only designed for fun and socialising but also to promote balance, coordination and independence, which can all be severely affected by a stroke.
The John C Ward memorial cup.
Amber Valley Stroke Club has been there for local people for 40 years, starting in 1982 as Ripley Stroke Club before being renamed in 2002 as Amber Valley Stroke Club and becoming a registered charity. Some members have been going to the group for many years and have benefitted immensely from the friendship and support it offers. Their activity sessions can involve anything from speakers and entertainers, to arts and crafts, interactive DVD quiz games and indoor games and the group also enjoys several trips and outings each year.
Secretary Terry Shiels explains: “The face of stroke has changed in recent times. We are seeing younger and younger people suffering strokes, even children and babies! Our aim is to try and change the perception that stroke only affects old people; it doesn’t! It affects all ages and we are here for all stroke survivors and their carers. Our simple aim is to show people there can be meaningful life after stroke.” “This year with the funding we have just received from the National Lottery we are addressing the mental health and well-being of our group members with a host of exciting outings. We have planned things such as a canal boat trip and afternoon tea on a train. We are visiting the seaside in Llandudno in the summer, sailing at Carsington Water, the Black Country Museum and other trips. We are here to support anyone who has been affected by stroke during what can be an incredibly difficult time and we hope to welcome new members to our friendly, supportive group.” THERE IS LIFE AFTER STROKE! affected by stroke during what can be an incredibly difficult time and we hope to welcome new members to our friendly, supportive group.” THERE IS LIFE AFTER STROKE! Upbeat Appeal to Public and Landlords to Spot Signs of Cannabis Grows. In recent weeks eight grows have been found across Derbyshire – with four being discovered in a single day in Derby. Officers are appealing for the public’s help – and in particular landlords – to be aware of the signs to spot that a cannabis grow might be in their community. Detective Chief Inspector Darren Pope said: “Cannabis grows pose a really serious risk to the public – not only from the criminality that they bring to an area – but also the dangerous ways in which electricity is bypassed to provide power to the grow. “In Derbyshire, as has been seen across the country, we have seen a real increase in the numbers of grows being found and the force is working hard to bring those responsible to justice. “However, we need the public’s help to do that. In particular landlords and letting agents hold a key position when it comes to stopping criminals from being able to establish a grow.” Damage from cannabis grows can cost landlords tens of thousands of pounds and, if they do not undertake certain checks, run the risk of a five-year prison sentence and an unlimited fine.
DCI Pope said: “Criminals will use fake documents in order to let homes and other buildings – and it is imperative to ensure that any documentation you are given is legitimate. “Some points that should raise suspicions are poor quality ID, a driving licence is offered as ID (this is not legal), no proof of employment, tenant wants to deal in cash only, difficulty in gaining access to the property after renting.” Key signs for the public that a grow might be in their area: • Are the curtains permanently closed or windows covered? • Is there a loud or distinctive sound of fans whirring? • Are there a large number of food deliveries being made to the property? • Have you never seen those living inside the address? • Is there a distinct smell of cannabis from the property? Anyone, whether a landlord or member of the public, who is concerned can contact the force using any of the below methods: • Facebook – send us a private message to /DerbyshireConstabulary • Twitter – direct message our contact centre on @DerPolContact • Website – complete the online contact form www.derbyshire.police.uk/ContactUs. • Phone – call us on 101.

Make sure of what you wish for make a will Most of us have an idea of what we want to happen after we have gone. Who will look after things in the first few days, who will arrange our funeral and most of all, who we would choose to inherit after our death. Without a will, legislation decides who is entitled to your money, and that may not be who you would want it to be. Trust us to advise you on such important arrangements. Make sure you have a Will in place - later may be sooner than you think.

Friendship Blooms Show your appreciation for a fellow member of the community; it may be a friend, a family member or maybe someone you’ve come into contact with who provides a wonderful service Beverley Kennedy or who works hard to make a difference. Let All Things Local surprise them with a fresh bouquet of flowers. All Things Local has joined forces with Beverley Kennedy (pictured) from Floraline, Gregory’s Way in Belper, to offer readers the chance to show their appreciation for a fellow member of the community. The recipient of this issue’s bouquet is Frances St Lawrence from Belper, who was nominated her friend Sue Smith, also from Belper. Here’s what Sue wrote: “Can I please nominate my friend Frances St Lawrence. I am a new resident to Belper and I got to know Frances through a mutual contact, 8 years down the line she was and continues to be my supportive ear when my mother died last year suddenly through the dreaded virus. She is also Treasurer of the local project ‘Sharing Not Wasting’, and she has risen to the role with admirable gusto and also calm. She deals beautifully with crazy banks and their odd ways! As Chair of the project without her input these last few months, life would have been a challenge. She works hard for all the various organisations she is involved with including the Unitarian Chapel as a reader and general sorter outer. I do hope you will consider Frances for a bloom gift, it would make her month.” Sue Smith Nominate someone to receive the next bouquet. All you have to do is state, in no more than 100 words, who you are nominating. Include their address and the reasons why you are nominating them. You can nominate more than one person if they are living/working at the same address… and remember – flowers don’t just have to be for women! The only rule is that the person receiving the flowers must live or work in the distribution area of All Things Local, Belper Edition (listed on front cover). Just write your nomination on a piece of paper and send to Friendship Blooms, All Things Local, 74 Woodhouse Road, Kilburn, Belper, Derbyshire DE56 0NA or e-mail your nomination to helen@allthingslocal.co.uk putting ‘Friendship Blooms’ as the subject. Please include your full name, address and daytime telephone number on your nomination.
