WELCOME LETTER Hello readers Well, after a lot of ‘will they, won’t they’, ‘can we, can’t we’, by the time you read this, restrictions may – or may not – have been lifted. I’m writing with crossed fingers (which isn’t easy, let me tell you!) in the hope that the Prime Minister will announce a ‘free pass’ back to life as we once knew it. Hopefully, the vaccine will be working and will have been sufficiently distributed through society to make it safe for us all to once again enjoy our freedom. As things have slowly eased over the last few months it has been so nice to once again see the local area bustling, businesses reopening and enjoying a thriving trade, and people interacting with one another. It’s the beginning of a return to the vibrant area that we know and love! We’re fortunate to live in such a wonderful, close-knit community with people who support each other and our local businesses. Hopefully this will help the area to bounce back quickly from the past eighteen months of upheaval and uncertainty, emerging stronger and more resilient as a result. As travel restrictions encourage most people to holiday in the UK rather than abroad this year, we may well be welcoming more visitors to our towns and villages as people enjoy the stunning area that we’re lucky enough to call home … and many of us will be venturing further afield to explore other regions of the UK. Team ATL have been individually enjoying a bit of time away in various locations around Britain recently, from the Northumbrian coast to Whitby, London, and – a little closer to home – the delights of a lodge at Mercia Marina! Well, a break is a break, isn’t it! If you’re looking for somewhere for a nice day out or even an overnight stay without travelling too far, it’s highly recommended. Of course, you don’t even have to go that far – you can literally ‘holiday at home’ and spend some time enjoying the wonderful local restaurants, pubs, shops, museums, country houses, lakes, waterfalls and walks that are right on our doorstep. From watersports at Carsington Reservoir, to the delights of Chatsworth House and Calke

Abbey, the Museum of Making at Derby Silk Mill, Wirksworth’s Heritage Centre or Belper’s own Strutt’s North Mill Museum, there are activities and events to entertain all ages. The new swan boats are happily a-swimming on the Derwent in Belper River Gardens ready for people to ride and, if you turn to page 38, you can follow the route to take a scenic walk from High Peak Junction on Cromford Canal up to Black Rocks where you’ll be rewarded with a stunning panorama of the Derwent Valley. Another way to get a great view of this is from the cable cars at the Heights of Abraham … yet another day out to add to your list! So, if you’ve not been lucky enough to book a trip this summer, don’t worry – a ‘staycation’ at home could be just as much fun. Talking of luck … if you enter our competitions you could be the lucky winner of a two course meal for two, kindly provided by The Queens Head at Little Eaton, or a bottle of champagne! Just a Thought...

Acting Like a Total Idiom! My work has afforded me the opportunity of speaking with people from across the world this past month. Beautiful, diverse and interesting cultures and languages including Pakistan, India, Finland and Germany. Aside from the fabulous connection and rich heritages I was being welcomed into, one thing really stuck out … the absolute and profound confusion created when the idiosyncrasies of the English Language come out to play! Humour me whilst I elaborate, dear reader! The head of a Down’s syndrome organisation in Karachi was left in uncontrollable hysterics after I described how someone had, ‘Waltzed in and taken over a meeting’ I was once in.

I totally derailed an activist in Vantaa when I explained that I could be at her meeting, ‘At the drop of a hat’. To be honest, on reflection, even I don’t really get this one! And my stand-out favourite was when I was speaking to a fellow author in Leipzig and I was recanting a time when I had been, ‘on a wild goose chase’ … silence … query around the loss of the goose … silence … concern over what had made the goose go wild?!? I was going to apologise for the total discomfiture I seemed to have evoked but, when I think on it, our language IS our heritage and I am proud of that, just as we should ALL be proud of our different cultures, heritages and backgrounds. So … go and act like a total idiom and let’s hope we get a ‘taste of our own medicine’!

She simply could not stifle the giggles at the very idea of someone entering a room and conducting a ballroom dance sequence by means of introducing themselves! A book reviewer in Bangalore was utterly befuddled when I exclaimed that people go, ‘Swanning off’ as they feel like it. She had a sincere concern for the swan: where it came from and subsequently went to!

Travel: Staycation Forest Holidays in the North

From the starry skies of Galloway Forest Park to Kielder’s wildlife-rich woodland, some of our country’s most magical forests can be found in northern England and Scotland. We’ve put together three of our favourites, perfect for your next staycation. Galloway Forest, Dumfries & Galloway, Scotland Where better to start than with the UK’s largest forest? At 297 square miles, Scotland’s Galloway Forest Park is a sprawling playground of ancient woodland, magnificent scenery and an astonishing range of wildlife.

Light pollution is so low here that the forest has been recognised as a Dark Sky Park – meaning that its skies are perfect for stargazing. After a night camping out under the stars, start your adventures from one of the park’s three visitor centres. Kirroughtree is your gateway to more active adventures, including the award-winning 7stanes mountain bike trails. If wildlife spotting is more your scene, look out for roe deer and rare red squirrels, or visit the park’s Red Deer Range. Galloway isn’t just woodland either. There are around 250 lochs to discover as you explore the park’s scenic walking and cycling trails. Kielder Forest, Northumberland, England When it comes to size, Northumberland’s Kielder Forest is also a front runner. Spanning 235 square miles, it’s the largest forest in England – and the second largest in the UK. Kielder is also home to the biggest man-made lake in Northern Europe, making it a popular spot for water sports enthusiasts. With miles of beautiful trails,

including forest walks and adrenaline-boosting mountain bike tracks, Kielder invites you to have your own mini adventure. The forest is a haven for wildlife too. Around 50% of England’s native red squirrels call it home, and rare wildlife including ospreys, pipistrelle bats, roe deer, salmon otters and water voles can also be found here. Just like Galloway, Kielder is famous for its dark skies. The forest’s remote location in Northumberland means it’s virtually unaffected by light pollution, making it a stargazer’s paradise. Don’t miss a trip to Kielder Observatory, where you can book ahead to attend a number of fascinating astronomical events. Glen Affric, Inverness, Scotland A medley of native woods, glittering lochs, snow-capped mountains and dramatic moorland, Scotland’s Glen Affric could easily have been plucked out of Canada. With over 30 miles of ancient pinewoods, the forest has one of the largest ancient Caledonian pine woods in Scotland. The woodland is so treasured it’s become part of the Scottish government’s regeneration project, with a target of 25% forest cover to reach by 2050. Wander amongst the pine trees to the sound of woodland birds, looking out for ospreys, otters and red deer stags. Or tackle some of Affric’s hiking trails, punctuated with thundering waterfalls and jagged canyons. This is Scotland at its most spectacular. Dog Falls are a must-see and provide a good starting point for several walking trails. Climb the gradual ascent to the spectacular viewpoint overlooking Loch Beinn a’ Mheadhoin, or picnic beneath the pine trees by Coire Loch.

For all the cat people out there, International Cat Day is on the 8th of August. Cats have been worshipped for thousands of years. They have been associated with magic and mystery for centuries. The Egyptians venerated our feline friends: they honoured them by dressing them in jewels, some ancient Egyptian deities were depicted with the head of a cat, and cats were often mummified after death, showing the high level of respect this civilisation had for them. Cats are independent creatures. They are wise companions to have in the home. We could all learn something from their ability to laze at every opportunity. Having a cat lowers stress and blood pressure: cat owners are said to have a 40% lower risk of having a heart attack. Their gentle purring is a comforting sound. This purr expresses their emotions and is a form of communication. Some research suggests that a cat’s purr can assist their healing from injury and illness. It is also healing to humans and very good for bone health. The myth that cats have more than one life is a worldwide phenomenon, however it is not always 9. For example, in Spain they are said to have 7 lives. For all the dog people, International Dog Day is celebrated on August 26th. Dogs are not referred to as man’s best friend for nothing. They are always happy to see you and welcome you home with a waggy tail. Dogs connect you with the outdoors; they get you out walking in all weathers. They

Word on Wine With summer now in full swing, why not try a chilled white wine in the sun? The wine I would like to introduce to you is Picpoul de Pinet. Picpoul is an ancient grape variety from the Languedoc region of France. Sometimes referred to as Piquepoul, meaning ‘lip-stinging’, the wine it produces has high acidity. It has produced good quality wine since the early 17th century, and was exported north from the Midi region in large quantities in the 17th and 18th centuries. However, the vines are susceptible to fungal diseases and the phylloxera outbreak in the late 1800s almost wiped it out. In the early 20th century it was found that the vines like the sandy soils of the coastal hills in southern France. Picpoul comes in 3 guises of Blanc, Noir and Gris. The Noir grapes produce an alcoholic, richly scented, colourless wine which is often used to soften strong red wines like Châteauneuf-du-Pape. The Blanc variety is the one being used to make white wine from the Languedoc / Roussillon region using 100% Picpoul. Picpoul de Pinet uses Picpoul Blanc grapes, creating a clear to green-gold coloured, full-bodied wine with lemony citrus flavours. This has become one of the area’s signature wines and has given the Languedoc / Roussillon region its own appellation d’origine contrôlée (AOC). It is one of the few French wines that actually use the name of the grape in the name of the wine. Tourists to the area can now visit the cooperative at Pinet, the most important winery in the region. It cannot be missed, as it is heavily signposted and at the side of the main autoroute along the Mediterranean coast. The wine that reflects the characteristics of the grape is the Ormarine’s Villemarin Picpoul de Pinet 2020 from Majestic Wines. They describe the wine as mouth-wateringly crisp and refreshing. The plateau of the area is covered in vines, wild herbs (juniper, thyme, rosemary and lavender) and pine groves stretching down to the vast Thau Lagoon. Warm days, cool nights and sea breezes create a wine full of citrus, apple and stone fruit flavours with a saline minerality. One writer described the wine as having ‘its head in the breeze and feet in the sea’. Technical Details: Grapes: 100% Picpoul Appearance: Clean, clear wine. Nose / Aroma: Floral aromas of lemon, white peach and apple. Taste: Citrus / lemon with wet stone, green apple and stone fruits. The world’s heaviest potato was grown by UK resident Peter Glazebrook in 2011. It weighed nearly 5kg. Potatoes have more Vitamin C than oranges, more potassium than bananas and more fibre than apples. The sweet potato is only distantly related to the regular potato. Potatoes develop green skin when exposed to light. Not only does this skin taste bitter, but it’s also toxic. Beer A New Wave of British Lager Lager has had a bit of a chequered history in this country. The first known lager to be brewed in the UK was back in 1835 in Edinburgh by Muir’s Brewery, but it didn’t really take off until two German immigrants from Saxony established the Wrexham Lager Beer Company in 1881. They found some success by exporting it but, unfortunately, it was a little too early for the majority of tastes of the UK beer drinkers who were still drinking the sweeter beers, like mild. In the 1960s and ‘70s when people started to travel to the continent and experience lager in warmer climes, the popularity of this golden, crystal clear beverage exploded. The introduction of mass marketed keg beer in the UK at this time was, in part, the reason for the consumer group CAMRA to be established, as a bit of a kickback against this onslaught and to preserve the heritage of real ale. More recently, within the craft beer scene, which has been synonymous with IPAs, pales, sours and stouts, we are seeing some breweries focus solely on lager, offering an alternative to the largely popular brands you expect to see on most bars. Lost & Grounded - Starting life in 2016 this Bristol brewer gained an instant reputation for being one of the best in the UK. With Alex Troncoso and Annie Clements at the helm it was never going to be bad. Alex was part of shaping Little Creatures into where it is today, and helped to build Camden Town Brewery into the monster that was eventually bought out, which is when this brewer and his partner left to follow their dream of their own brewery. Donzoko – based in Hartlepool, they are inspired by the rich beer heritage of the UK, Germany and Europe using techniques from modern UK and American craft brewing processes to create delicious beers for every day.

Braybrooke – started in 2017 in Market Harborough and they have just one aim: to make really good lager. They have a commitment to quality and complementing their core range of Kelles, Helles and Session lagers with Cold Brew Lager, Honey Marzen, Smoked Lager and India Pale Lager.

Utopian – based in the middle of Devon in Crediton, they pride themselves on using only British ingredients, reducing their food miles. The UK leads the way in growing natural, disease-resistant hops and sourcing them locally helps Utopian with their sustainability pledge, as these are also more environmentally friendly. Most beers spend over 100 days in tanks, meaning they are crystal clear, crisp and dry. Expect styles such as a British Pilsner, Czech inspired lager, Maibock lager and Black lager. I was fortunate to try some of these beers, as part of the @belperbeerclub. All members were all suitably impressed with the care and attention that is being poured into them and would highly recommend giving any of these a try if you are wanting to source British lagers.

Quinoa and Feta Burgers with Tomato Relish A vegetarian burger packed with flavour and topped with a simple tomato relish. Preparation time: 15 minutes Cooking time: 40 minutes Makes: 6 burgers Ingredients: 80g / scant ½ cup quinoa 2 tsp bouillon vegetable stock powder or a vegetable stock cube 2 tbsp olive oil ½ red onion, finely chopped 2 garlic cloves, crushed 1 tsp ground cumin 1 x 400g can kidney beans drained 115g / 4oz feta cheese, crumbled 1 tbsp parsley, chopped 1 tbsp mint, chopped 2 tbsp cornflour Salt and pepper Tomato Relish: 4 tomatoes, quartered 1 red onion, quartered 1 tbsp olive oil ½ small chipotle chilli, soaked in warm water for 20 minutes 1 tbsp fresh coriander 2 tsp xylitol 2 tsp balsamic vinegar Nutritional information per serving: Calories per burger with relish (no bun): 215kcal Protein 8.5g Carbohydrates 24g (of which sugars 6.2g) Fat 9.7g (of which saturates 3.4g)

Method: Add the quinoa to 250ml water with the bouillon powder or stock cube and bring to the boil. Lower the heat and simmer with the lid on for 15 minutes until cooked. Keep the lid on and let the quinoa sit in the pan for another 10 minutes. Place in a bowl. For the relish, preheat the oven to 180C/ fan 160C/gas mark 4 and place the tomatoes and onion on a baking tray. Drizzle over the oil and cook in the oven for 15 minutes until soft. Place in a food processor with the remaining ingredients and pulse to form a thick and chunky puree. Allow to cool. Heat 1 tbsp of the olive oil in a frying pan. Add the onion, garlic and cumin. Cook, stirring for about 5 minutes. Season with salt and pepper. Add the beans, feta and cooked quinoa. Stir in the herbs and cornflour and mash with a potato masher to break up the beans. When cool enough to handle, divide into 6 portions and shape into burgers. Heat the remaining olive oil in a large frying pan on a medium-high heat. Add the burgers and cook until browned on each side, about 5-6 minutes. To serve, place the burgers into burger buns and arrange over the toppings of your choice.

Motoring The History of the Land Rover Discovery The Discovery has been a popular and a core part of Land Rover’s line-up for decades, incorporating premium touches and a comfortable interior while retaining off-road prowess. Let’s take a look at the history of the Land Rover Discovery: 1989: The Discovery arrives SUVs started gaining in popularity in the late ‘80s and, although Land Rover had offerings in this segment with both the Defender and Range Rover, the firm didn’t have an option between them. To address this, Land Rover introduced the Discovery at the 1989 Paris Motor Show, and it was offered as a three- or five-door model. It was facelifted in 1994, and a stripped-back commercial version was also launched. 1998: The three-door version gets dropped After almost a decade, the second-generation Discovery arrived looking more like a mid-life refresh. However, with a comprehensively new chassis and a five-door-only layout, it was substantially changed. This new model was more practical, with a more spacious interior. Again, Land Rover introduced a facelifted version later on in 2002. 2004: A whole new look Despite still being square and boxy, the look of the Discovery 3 was a more radical departure from earlier models, and every single component was new.

2009: Slicker than ever The fourth Discovery arrived in 2009 but was more of a facelifted ‘3’. The looks remained largely unchanged, though the headlights were more a modern design while the grille was more complex – subtle updates that ensured the Discovery continued to look fresh. Land Rover made some big changes to the Discovery’s powertrains, while a range of special editions was launched, such as the XXV, released to celebrate the car’s 25th anniversary. 2014: Discovery becomes a sub-brand The start of the 2010s represented a turning point for SUVs. Gaining in popularity, off-roaders and four-wheel-drives were being snapped up quickly, with many manufacturers producing high-riding options. Land Rover decided to scrap its Freelander, replacing it with the Discovery Sport – a more compact 4x4 that used the Discovery name to capture some of the premium appeal of the larger model. 2016: The fifth generation arrives Land Rover revealed its striking fifth-generation Discovery at the 2016 Paris Motor Show, unveiling a car that was substantially different to the car it replaced. Sales kicked off from the start of 2017. The interior made another shift upmarket, while the latest range of Ingenium engines provided more than enough performance. The level of technology on offer was considerably improved, yet the Discovery’s off-road abilities were retained, thanks to even more complex terrain assistance systems. 2021: Today, the 2021 Discovery update has brought electrified powertrains to the seven-seater, in the form of mild-hybrid petrols and diesels.

Fitness Matters Menopause Madness Ahh, the time in a woman’s life when she doesn’t know if she’s coming or going, on fire or freezing, happy or sad, wants to diet or eat everything in sight. One thing’s for sure, all women will reach this point. Some women will sail through the menopause with little or no symptoms, whereas some will feel like they have been hit by a tsunami. But we would all benefit from educating ourselves and finding out about what is available and what works for us. Perimenopause: Our hormones start to change, and symptoms may begin to appear, these are just a few: hot flushes, changes to periods, night sweats, joint pain, muscle ache, loss of sexual desire, brain fog, migraines, vaginal and urinary symptoms, hair and skin changes, mood swings, fatigue, struggling to sleep. This can last for months and, for some women, years. After your periods have stopped for a year, you’re then classed as being in the menopause, but unfortunately the symptoms can continue. Treatment: Do your research into what you think you’d like to try, ask to speak to a menopause specialist doctor,

and don’t be fobbed off with anti-depressants. Unfortunately these are often prescribed but a lot of women aren’t depressed, we’re menopausal! Don’t be scared to go down the HRT route if you need to; there are different patches depending on where you are in this journey. Other ways to minimise the negative impact this is having on your life is: • Stop smoking • Minimise drinking • Keep fit especially using weights • Eat a well-balanced diet • Meditation/relaxation • Educate yourself • Talk to friends/others As women we’re almost ashamed by how we feel, especially if you have always been seen as a strong woman, but this can not only turn your life upside down but also your family’s lives. Footnotes: Itchy Feet Many people suffer from itchy feet from time to time and I don’t mean the urge to travel or move on to a new situation. Most cases of itchy feet turn out to be a fungal infection, normally referred to as Athlete’s Foot. However, this isn’t always the case as there are other conditions which can cause intense itching. Perhaps the most common of these is dermatitis in one form or another. An increasingly common type that we come across is footwear dermatitis caused by the patient becoming sensitive to chemicals used in the manufacture of shoes. The sensitivity can be to many things ranging from the adhesives used by the manufacturer to Chromium used in the tanning of leather, or even the dyes used. The only way to deal with this is by avoiding your normal footwear for a while to see if the symptoms decrease. If it turns out that the patient is indeed allergic to a particular pair of shoes then the only sensible thing to do is throw them away. Another condition which arises from time to time is Pompholyx – a type of dermatitis which is easily recognisable due to there being tiny fluid filled spots resembling individual grains of tapioca. These are treated by soaking the feet with a very weak solution of potassium permanganate and, in severe cases, the use of steroid creams. A walk that explores parts of Derbyshire’s Industrial Heritage whilst also giving stunning and wide-ranging views that include Crich Stand, Carsington Reservoir and the Derwent Valley. Generally good paths which can be muddy in places with one very short, stepped, steep section. It is worth noting that if you reversed the route there would be a long and steep climb at the start to the top of Sheep Pasture Incline. The Route 1. From the back of the car park (grid ref. SK 3148 5609) turn right over the bridge, cross the River Derwent to reach Cromford Canal and High Peak Junction. At High Peak Junction it is still possible to visit the old workshops where the chains and haulage equipment used on the old High Peak Railway were maintained.

2. Turn left to walk along the canal, past the steam operated Leawood Pumphouse. Shortly after, at an old canal lock gate, cross the canal and continue along the opposite side of the canal. This stretch of the Cromford Canal is now a nature reserve which, in recent years, has seen the return of water voles to its banks. 3. Just before Leawood Tunnel leave the canal path, taking the footpath on the right, signed for Homesford Cottage. Cross the bridge over the Derwent, go under the tunnel and follow the track to the A6. Cross the A6 and follow the track opposite behind the houses. 4. As you approach a metal gate, take the track which heads uphill but look for a gap in the fence, almost immediately on your right, to follow a clear footpath uphill through Birch Wood. As you walk along the top of the wood you will reach a tarmac track; continue straight ahead along this to re-enter the wood by the entrance to Birch Wood campsite. 5. At the end of the campsite’s first field take the footpath into its second field and follow the path to the barn opposite. It is from this point that the views open

up to extend from Crich Stand to Alport Heights. Cross a track, the Midshires Way, to follow the signed footpath straight ahead across four fields. In the fourth field don’t take the stone stile directly opposite out of the field, instead take the footpath, through the gap, on the right of the field. 6. Continue straight ahead across three fields to emerge at a track lined with gorse bushes; follow this to a farm track. Continuing straight ahead, follow the track past the farm to the road. Turn right downhill towards Bolehill. 9. Bear left, then right, to a track leading downhill to Black Rocks. If you wish to explore Black Rocks there is clear path at the back of the rocks that takes you onto the top of the rocks. Although this involves a bit of scrambling and it is exposed on the top of the rocks the views across the Derwent Valley are stunning. 10. After passing Black Rocks, turn right onto the High Peak Trail, which follows the route of the old High Peak railway line. Follow the trail back to High Peak Junction first passing the old Engine House at the top of Sheep Pasture Incline and then the ‘Catch Pit’ at the foot of the incline. Cross the canal and return to the car park via the bridge over the River Derwent.

7. Just before the first house in Bolehill, take the footpath on the right, uphill. When the steps end, continue straight ahead, uphill. As the ascent eases look out for the stile into the wood on your left. Continue along the path, uphill, through the wood to emerge, via a gate, at Bolehill’s summit trig point. From here Carsington Reservoir and Middleton Moor come into view. 8. From the summit, take the path on the left heading downhill next to the fence. Ignore the first gate in the fence but take the second gate through the fence to follow the stepped path down to a post with green and blue circles.

Lauren’s Legacy Lauren, affectionately known as Loz, was an extraordinary daughter, sister, godmother and young lady. A girl who loved life with a reputation for partying hard, but a loyal and passionate friend to all who knew her. An avid Sheffield United supporter and dedicated to her chosen career as a nurse. Lauren was diagnosed in September 2014 with a treatable but not curable Sarcoma which started a 5-year battle with this dreadful disease, during which Lauren never complained or let it get her down.

Lauren’s Legacy directly helps teenagers and young adults going through cancer treatments by granting wishes. The aim is to be able to continue granting wishes but also to purchase a holiday home for families to spend quality time together away from the hospital environment. Their fundraising is continuous, and they are incredibly grateful to national and local companies who have helped. Likewise, individuals who have put themselves out to do sponsored events, raffles and birthday fundraisers. Pennine Garden & Trees have a special bond with Lauren’s Legacy and each month make a donation to the charity from their profits.

Instead, she took her family and friends on a wild rollercoaster ride for the next 5 years until sadly Lauren passed away on June 26th 2019 at the age of 22 years. During these years Lauren embarked on numerous charity events with the family motorcycle club, The League of Zeal (LOZ) and raised over £90,000 for the Teenage Cancer Trust. Intent to carry on Lauren’s memory and her desire to help others, her family and friends have formed Lauren’s Legacy, a registered charity based in Heage.

Quirky Britain Tales from Britain’s ‘Food War’ Zones

Holidaying in the UK this year? Then you may be looking forward to sampling some great local cheeses, cakes and artisan brews. But, before you tuck in to all that delicious produce, you should be aware of the strong emotions a well-loved local dish can inspire. Cream tea wars One of the main causes of strife between the people of Devon and Cornwall is the innocent cream tea. Ask a native Devonian to eat a cream tea and she or he will split the scone, pile clotted cream onto each half then add a dollop of jam on top of the cream. Serve someone from Cornwall the same teatime treat and they will spoon jam onto each half scone, then spread the cream on top. Last year a National Trust poster designed to attract visitors to Lanhydrock House in Cornwall caused outrage when it used a photo of a cream tea with the jam on top of the cream. In response, locals threatened to boycott the National Trust property, while one indignant Facebook member commented: “There are some things you don’t do National Trust, and putting a picture of a DEVON cream tea for a CORNISH cream tea event is disgusting.” Shape-shifting sausages Ask any traditionally-minded Scot what shape a sausage should be, and the answer is likely to be “square”. The ‘Lorne sausage’, ‘slice’ or ‘square sausage’ is a tasty mixture of minced meat, rusk and spices, served as part of a traditional Scottish breakfast. However, the ongoing culinary debate in Scotland is not, as you might think, about a sausage’s shape,

it’s about what it should be called. In 2016 a Scot called Andy O’Donnell went so far as to create a Facebook page dedicated to the name ‘slice’ (to describe the square sausage). The page now boasts many members who regularly post photos and tongue-in-cheek comments. Whose tart is it anyway? Here in Derbyshire, the Bakewell Tart is the star turn of every cafe and bakery in Bakewell. This confection of jam, frangipane and flaked almonds inside a shortcrust pastry shell is a variant of the town’s famous dessert, Bakewell Pudding. Bakewell’s residents may be proud of their local speciality, but there’s no evidence that the recipe actually originated in the town. To make matters worse, a rival tart was discovered in 2013, when Gloucestershire’s council leader Paul James came across a recipe for a ‘Gloucester Tart’ – with almost identical ingredients – in a local history book. The discovery prompted Gloucester’s local media to gleefully exclaim: “Gloucester Tart revived – and it’s better than the Bakewell!” So before you set off on your summer break, you’d be well advised to brush up on your diplomatic skills: but get ready to run if you mix up your tarts, call a ‘slice’ a ‘Lorne sausage’ or – heaven forbid – spread your scone the wrong way. Short Story Shades of White Lockdown has been a nightmare for all of us. Confined to our homes, many of us have been going plumb crazy with nothing to fill our time and keep us occupied. To combat the boredom, my wife and I decided to repaint the inside of our house – in hindsight, something we have deeply regretted. When we first moved into our thatched cottage seven years ago, we painted all the walls and ceilings of our new home, brilliant white. We did this to save money. However, my decorating skills have a lot to answer for. After much deliberation and heated arguments, we finally agreed to repaint the walls a fetching shade of dusky pink. Not a wise choice, as it turned out! The colour looked absolutely nothing like it did on the manufacturers’ paint chart! I’m the world’s messiest painter. Somehow, I manage to slop paint everywhere – on the floor, in my hair, in my wife’s hair, down my clothes … when I calculate how many tins of paint I need, I have to allow for fifty percent wastage! And so … now, we’ve decided to hire the services of a qualified decorator to carry out the work – which is what we should have done in the first place. Let’s face it - a professional decorator will do a much better job and in a fraction of the time. My next-door neighbour has recommended a man she knows who ‘does a good job and doesn’t charge the earth.’ Sounds just the ticket. I’ll give him a call. ‘Andy? I’ve been given your number by a friend,’ I say. ‘I need you to come and paint the interior walls of our house, please.’ ‘No problem, mate,’ he replies. ‘Any ideas of colours?’ ‘White,’ I reply, playing safe this time. ‘What shade of white?’ ‘Well, I don’t know – just white.’ ‘Yes, I understand, but there are several shades of white to choose from.’ ‘I had no idea.’ ‘For example – you could go for James White or Joa’s White? They’re a subtle shade of white.’

continues: ‘But don’t discount Old White, or even New White. Both very popular.’ I’m speechless, and totally confused. I never realised choosing a paint colour could be so challenging. ‘Have you considered a shade of white with a hint of colour?’ asked the decorator, sensing my frustration and doing his best to be helpful. ‘No.’ ‘Worth a thought, mate,’ he said. ‘House White has the merest hint of yellow. Or Great White is very sophisticated with the slightest lilac hue.’ ‘I’m not sure. Makes me think of sharks.’ ‘Elephant’s Breath?’ ‘Sounds smelly!’ ‘You’re probably right. It’s not really white.’ He paused. ‘Cabbage White?’ ‘No – same reason.’ ‘Lime White? Or White Tie, a very pale shade of blue?’ I scratch my head, which is now spinning, and beginning to throb. ‘Of course, you don’t have to go for white. How’s about a relaxing shade of yellow, or grey, or green, or blue, or even red? Lots of vibrant colours to choose from there, mate. You’re spoilt for choice.’ ‘Yuck, no!’ I reply, losing my cool. ‘You know what? I might just leave the walls the colour they are now – bright pink! Save some money. Not even bother to paint them. Sorry, Andy, you’ve just done yourself out of a job…mate!’

‘Never heard of those gentlemen!’ I say. ‘Or School House White is very nice.’ ‘But I don’t live in a school house!’ I retort. ‘Or Shaded or Shadow White – a couple of shades darker.’ I stare at the telephone receiver. ‘Can I have an off-white?’ ‘Yes, they do an Off White – a mid-tone white.’ Andy

Dolphins: The Smart, Sociable Heroes of the Sea At the Institute for Marine Mammal Studies in Mississippi, USA, Kelly the Dolphin has been causing quite a splash. As part of the institute’s training programme, these much-loved marine mammals have been taught to pick up any litter that drops in their pool in order to swap it for a fish reward. The system was working well until one dolphin, known as Kelly, had other ideas. After finding a large piece of paper floating on the water, she hid it under a rock at the bottom of the pool instead of giving it to her trainer. She then tore off bits of the paper, getting a fish for each new piece she presented and thus maximising her fish quota. By hiding the paper in the first place, Kelly showed that she was able to delay gratification, and researchers have admitted that her scheme to split the paper into separate pieces shows quite sophisticated thinking on her part.

The shell trick

A recent study published in the scientific journal Current Biology shows just how resourceful dolphins can be. In Shark Bay, Western Australia, a whole pod of dolphins has been observed using empty shells as spoons. This activity, which has become known as ‘shelling’, involves a dolphin chasing a fish into a giant shell then trapping it by pushing its nose into the opening. After that, the dolphin will take the shell up to the surface and shake it to release the excess water. When the water has poured out of the shell, the dolphin tips the trapped fish into its open mouth.

Our relationship with dolphins goes back as long as people have fished and travelled the seas. They were familiar in Greek and Roman art, where illustrations on coins, pottery and mosaic

floors show leaping dolphins ridden by gods and demigods. The ancient Greeks believed them to be messengers of the sea god, Poseidon, and they were also sacred to the gods Aphrodite and Apollo. Killing a dolphin was considered a sacrilegious act. The Romans took their spiritual connection with dolphins one step further by imagining them to be guides who led the souls of the dead to the Islands of the Blessed. There have also been many stories that describe dolphins as rescuers of ships and drowning humans.

A dolphin hero

One such dolphin, nicknamed ‘Pelorus Jack,’ was famous for helping ships pass through the dangerous waters of Cook Strait, New Zealand, between 1888 and 1912. Despite the rocks and strong currents, no shipwrecks were ever recorded when Jack was present as a guide. Named after a nearby coastal area called Pelorus Sound, he was so important to shipping that he became the only individual sea creature to be protected by law in any country in the world. Mankind has long believed that dolphins are gifted with a rare intelligence and studies such as those carried out in the USA and Australia are helping us understand just how brainy they really are. No wonder we feel such a strong bond and sense of kinship with these lively, graceful and resourceful sea creatures. By Kate McLelland

Gardening Liquid Gold Water conservation and management in the garden. As you swivel the magic turnkey that releases a gushing stream of clean and sparkling water into your can, pause for a moment. Marvel at the luck of the draw that finds us living in a part of the world where water is available for us to use and to misuse. The water that you pour into summer hanging baskets and sprinkle liberally on your beds and borders was once excreted by huge reptiles. Your café latte contains dinosaur pee. Indeed, water on Planet Earth has been here for almost five billion years and the total amount is just about the same as ever. It represents the ultimate success story in terms of recycling. So, what’s the problem? Portability is the problem. Gardeners will be familiar with the weight of a big can of water – bringing in water where it’s needed isn’t always easy. And when crops fail in Africa, knowing there’s ample water in the world for everyone is no help. Climate change is causing a warmer atmosphere. We either have too much water or too little; Goldilocks would rarely judge things to be ‘just right’. What we all need to do is our bit, so what ‘bit’ is best in a garden, and how can gardeners help? • Creating space for water within a garden can be life-enhancing. Aim to slow rainfall down – allow some of it to be absorbed in vegetation, then catch and retain some more. Provide a pond that collects water run-off, then enjoy watching the biodiverse-rich habitats that develop. Surround your pond with plants that can cope with flooding and drought. They will help to absorb some

of the excess during times-a-plenty, but they won’t die of heat exhaustion during a prolonged dry spell. Some examples are: Acanthus, Astilbe, Brunnera, Cornus, Eupatorium, Hemerocallis, Iris, Kniphofia, Miscanthus, Persicaria, Rudbeckia, Scabious and many more. Experimentation is all part of your gardening fun. • In places that require hard materials, choose porous options through which the rain can drain. • Divert your downpipes into water butts – these can be surprisingly beautiful if you shop around. It means you capture some of the rainwater for use when you need it the most. • Choose drought -tolerant planting for the driest parts of your garden. These plants will generally have silvery-coloured leaves or foliage that is covered in fine hair, which reduces evaporation. Once established, they should survive the hottest, driest weather that they are ever likely to get, without needing to be watered. Surround them with gravel, pebbles or boulders as this will conserve what little moisture there is in the soil, plus it looks great too. • Use plants to help your plants. One species can prop up another and provide shade if they are planted close together. Avoid bare patches of soil that will dry out in hot weather. • Consider adding structural reinforcement to your shed roof so that you can add plants. Parenting Camping with Kids Top tips to making sleeping under the stars a whole lot more enjoyable… Fly the flag If, like me, you have the navigation skills of Nemo’s best friend Dory, you may find yourself getting lost occasionally. A telescopic flag pole and windsock is a useful marker, particularly if you’re planning to give the kids a bit more freedom. To wee or not to wee No one enjoys a 3am trek to the loo, so a portable toilet is your friend. A potty is fine for younger children, but you’ll need something a bit more substantial for older kids (and adults). If you have room, a bucket style loo is ideal. Otherwise, try a collapsible toilet. We recently bought the Bivvy Loo, which folds down small, supports up to 23 stone and comes with biodegradable bags and powder to transform liquid to gel. Let there be light You’ll need headtorches to find your way around after dark. A rechargeable camping lantern is also useful for evenings (and those 3am toilet breaks). And a string of solar fairy lights around your door will help you to identify your tent at night. (They also look rather pretty.) A decent night’s sleep If you’re only planning to camp occasionally, air beds are usually fine. However, they do tend to deflate somewhat overnight and don’t exactly have the longest lifespan. While camping beds are more expensive, they can work out far better value in the long run. And you’re likely to get a much better night’s sleep. Dress for the occasion Even the hottest British summer’s day can turn cool at night. Close-fitting PJs (or leggings and a T-shirt) will help to keep the warmth in. Make sure you pack plenty of layers. You’ll appreciate a fleecy jumper when you’re huddled

up sheltering from the rain. Speaking of rain, it can be difficult to get dry in a tent, so waterproofs are a good idea. Eat, drink and be merry A camping stove is essential for anything longer than a weekend break, even if you’re planning to mainly barbecue or eat out. Stick to easy-to-cook meals, from breakfast fry-ups to fajitas. Don’t have an electric hook up? A cool box with ice blocks makes a useful fridge. You’ll need to refreeze the blocks each day, which you can usually do in the site shop. My kids love ‘camping cereal’ (aka mini variety packs). Pour the milk directly into the cereal bag. No bowl = less washing up. Ideally, start collecting condiment sachets a few weeks before your holiday, so you have plenty of ketchup, mayonnaise, vinegar etc. to see you through. And, what camping trip would be complete without toasting marshmallows? Other essentials worth packing include: • Washing line – string it between your tent and a tree to dry swimming costumes on • Baby wipes – handy no matter how old the kids are • Dustpan and brush • Doormat • First aid kit • Extra-thick thermal socks (Heat Holders are ideal) • Gaffer tape for tackling leaks • Travel games, a ball and a frisbee By Kate Duggan

The Diary of a Local Mum

Here, There and Everywhere… As I write this, we’re once again on tenterhooks waiting for an ‘announcement’ regarding the easing of restrictions. Will it be a case of ‘more delay’ or ‘go out to play’? We’re all keen to resume life as we once knew it, but there are aspects of lockdown that were, dare I say it, easier. Ok, ok, I know, we’re on the cusp of freedom and I’m harking on about what I’ll miss about lockdown?!? I must’ve lost the plot! I realise this sounds like madness, but bear with me … There were LOTS of really difficult things about lockdown but, for me, one of the silver linings in the fact that no-one could go anywhere was just that … no one could go anywhere! For once, life wasn’t a hectic hurtle ruled by a ticking clock, dashing from one place to the next with the precision of a military operation … and the simplicity made a refreshing change. Don’t get me wrong, I wouldn’t want it to be a permanent state. The kids really need to live their lives, complete with hobbies, events and social interactions. Staying at home would certainly drive us all bonkers in the long-term. But now these activities are back with a vengeance and I’m looking back with some heavily rose-tinted glasses on. There are two reasons why I’m finding this difficult: firstly, I’m simply out of practice. The calendar – once the most important tool in the family home – was, for many months, just a blank sheet hanging below a nice photo. Now it’s back to being Control Centre, and I’m a very rusty operations manager. I used to know timings of clubs, journeys etc. off by heart – now I constantly need reminding what time things start/finish and how long it takes to travel a once familiar journey. The other, bigger, reason is that my kids are now teenagers, so I’ve lost any element of control over arrangements. They are very good in that they ask if they can go places and keep me updated if plans change, but that’s just it – they very frequently do.

What was once a well-oiled machine is now more like a pan of spaghetti. I feel like a pilot on standby, waiting for that call which is inevitably “Can you come and get me now?” (Or “Can you come half an hour later?” when you’ve already set off). Trying to coordinate activities when you’ve only got a vague inkling what their (very fluid) ‘plans’ may be is, frankly, almost impossible. It’s like herding cats and I’m constantly met with the retort “Mum, I told you that!” when I forget who needs to be where, when. Trying to make my own plans around this chaotic state is, well, a pretty fruitless pursuit. And, while part of me thinks “Just leave them to it, they can make their own way home” the feeling that your kid is out there and may need your help is so overwhelming that it’s hard to relax and enjoy even the snatched moments of calm. Now, I can hear those of you with a small toddler hanging off your leg while you dream of at least having a wee in peace saying “Stop moaning woman! I’d give my right arm for a few minutes at home alone!” and yes, I agree – there was a time when I’d have thought this was a luxury, too. But honestly, it’s not all it’s cracked up to be. It’s a sort of ‘semi-childfree state’. You can’t make plans, go anywhere, even run a bath because you’ve only got 10 minutes turn-around time or you’re constantly waiting for that call to action. Like Bruce Wayne, but not. I mean, Batman couldn’t sit with a glass of wine in the garden on a sunny evening either, just in case. So, that’s pretty much my life at the minute. I feel like I’m on some TV challenge show where I have to dash around the countryside picking things up and dropping them off at various rendezvous points, against the clock. Maybe there’s a prize at the end? The funny thing is, as much as my head’s constantly spinning with all this mayhem, I know I’ll miss it when it’s gone.

All Things Local has joined forces with Rachael Collins (pictured) from Fleur Florist of King Street, Belper to offer readers the chance to show their appreciation for a fellow member of the community. The recipient of this issue’s bouquet is Mrs Sanderson from Stanley Common. She was nominated by Mr Reeve, Headteacher at Stanley Common C of E Primary School. Here’s what he wrote:

“The children and staff at the school were recently honoured to present Mrs Sanderson with her Long Service Award, celebrating 25 years of continuous service with Derbyshire County Council. In recognition of this, I would also like to nominate her for the Friendship Blooms bouquet. Mrs Sanderson began working for Derbyshire County Council in 1995 as a relief school crossing patrol. From January 1998, she began working at the school as a lunchtime supervisor and later was employed as an education welfare officer. She has continued to work in various roles as an educational welfare officer or teaching assistant up to the present. A lady of many talents, Mrs Sanderson stood in as the school’s caretaker in 2005! She has also worked for Morley Primary School, running their breakfast and afterschool clubs and in 2017 she was employed by Stanley Common C of E Primary School to set up and lead their breakfast and afterschool wrap-around care. She is a highly valued member of the school community. She works as a Teaching Assistant in Year 5/6 as well as a midday supervisor and play leader. Mrs Sanderson also continues to ensure the children have a safe and enjoyable time at the Adventurers Club – the wrap-around care for our school. The whole community is extremely proud of her; she has dedicated 25 years to enriching the lives of the children of Stanley Common and Derbyshire and the number of children that she has nurtured and inspired is in the hundreds, if not thousands. Local History Something from Strutts

Herbert Strutt School has always had people at heart. During the summer of 1940, Belper hosted children from Westcliff High School, Southend-on-Sea, Essex, evacuated as part of a mass operation to clear people from the south-east of England, seen as a target for attacks from German forces invading France. Along with many homes and locations within the town, the school became directly involved. These children had literally been told to ‘pack up and go’, arriving in Belper with nothing but an ID tag, suitcase and gas mask. They stayed until October, 1942, sharing the school with morning lessons for local children and for Westcliff in the afternoon. Strutts visitors will be familiar with the hall lectern, presented to the school in recognition of this event, bearing the memorial inscription: ‘From the Masters and Boys of the Westcliff High School June 1940 – October 1942 “I was a stranger and ye took me in”.’ Former Belper Strutts pupil Bruce Townsend recalls the air raid shelters built by playing fields across the road, Gibfield Lane swimming baths being drained to accommodate Rolls Royce office workers and pupils having to carry all their belongings around in a satchel each day, due to the sharing of desks. Bruce also mentions that teaching was a reserved occupation, therefore exempt from obligatory National Service, however some decided not to take advantage of this scheme, including the woodwork teacher, appropriately named Mr Pine.

Recently, Derbyshire Toy Libraries relocated and now operates from one of the ground floor rooms, with shelving and storage packed full of brightly coloured exciting things! Established 21 years ago, the toy library is a charity, run by a small team of dedicated and passionate volunteers offering a toy hire and equipment service throughout Derbyshire. With over 1000 toys and over 260 members, it’s very popular with those playing and paying! Members pay a membership fee then hire any of the toys or equipment from the online database. With a wide variety of toys, instruments, indoor and outdoor equipment and fancy dress too, there’s something for everyone. Ideal for parents or grandparents hiring just what’s needed, ‘try before you buy’, or adding extra fun for events or family gatherings. They provide a great service, advice and recommendations too. An inspired intergenerational project, ‘Young at Heart’, also provides appropriate items to care homes locally so, from newborn onwards, there’s no age limit! Stock is thoroughly cleaned and checked after each hire and regularly replenished with monthly toy sales, donations to other charities or families in need.

Upbeat: Dad and Daughter Duo Doing Derbyshire Proud Derbyshire Constabulary has welcomed a new father-daughter duo that have joined the force to keep those living in, working in, and visiting the county safe. PC Chris Clayton has 28 years’ service with the force. Now, his 19-year-old daughter Lauren has started at the same section as a PCSO. Lauren still lives at home with her Dad and is interested in pursuing a career in the footsteps of her Dad by becoming a PC in the near future. PCSO Clayton said: “I have always admired my dad’s work ethic and hearing about the kinds of situations he encounters whilst on shift. “The way he has always described how rewarding it is to

provide people with reassurance when they are their most vulnerable made the career sound extremely exciting, fulfilling and rewarding. “When I came across an opportunity to become part of Derbyshire Constabulary, I knew I would have to make the most of it, which I am sure has made my dad very pleased to say the least!” Speaking with pride, Dad PC Chris Clayton said: “It’s certainly been a journey bringing Lauren up and only seems like yesterday I was carrying her on my shoulders up the mountains of the Lake District in the hope she would be inspired by the breath-taking panoramic views, only for that to be crushed at her delight in getting phone signal!” After living it himself, Chris is very much looking forward to the experiences Lauren is yet to face within her career. He added: “It’s the working with a shift who, without prompting, are prepared to turn out and lend some support when needed that makes the job everything that it is. I know Lauren will barge my shadow out of the way and be an asset to any shift.” Lauren said: “As a PCSO, I am most excited to be a visible presence in the community and help tackle the issues which will improve the overall quality of life for the residents. It is an amazing feeling knowing you’ve helped someone and contributed to their happiness and wellbeing.”

Bereavement Matters One thing that you discover working in the funeral industry after a while is how innovative it is, with new products and services designed to help people remember or honour their loved ones being made available all the time. In the past we’ve had launches of glass jewellery containing the loved ones’ remains, coffins decorated with pictures and silver pendants bearing the fingerprints of a deceased family member, all of which either help to make the funeral unique or provide a fitting lifelong memento. Now, even in the current climate, new products are still being introduced and we are taking a closer look at two new ways in which flowers at services can either be preserved or substituted with an alternative product without losing the stunning effect a bouquet can add to the occasion. I think the days when funerals were awash with floral tributes are long gone. For many years now families have asked for donations instead of flowers, with floral tributes tending to be limited to just relatives and close families.

It is possible to get a small proportion of the flowers preserved in resin so that they will remain an everlasting and decorative memento of the funeral which can be appreciated long afterwards. Alternatively, we have met with a supplier who uses silk flowers to provide floral tributes that look as good as the real thing, but which can be collected and taken away after the cremation – she does not do burials – and reused for another family. This gives people who maybe do not have the room or inclination to take the flowers away with them an alternative option, while it’s also cheaper than a display of real flowers. Will they catch on? We don’t know, but choice is key for families these days and, just as we have with previous new products and services, we’ll take a look before deciding whether or not to offer it to our clients.
