WELCOME LETTER

Hello readers

Welcome to the August/September issue of All Things Local – wow, this year seems to be flying by! We’re all so busy catching up with activities that have been rearranged from the past couple of years! Local events are back with a vengeance and it’s been great to see carnivals and festivals in full swing in our towns and villages, bringing communities back together as they should be, from Jubilee street parties to music festivals, Belper Goes Green, Little Eaton and Duffield Carnivals to name but a few … with plenty more to follow over the summer months including Pride in Belper in August, which you can read more about on page 83. As we go to print we’re in the throes of an early heatwave which hopefully won’t be the only bit of summery weather we see this year! The warm weather is wonderful but do make sure you stay safe – we’re not used to it! Slather on that sun cream, stay hydrated and take care in the heat. Make sure you’re paying extra attention to pets too, as they can suffer when it’s hot. The warm weather can quickly get too much for them so ensure they’ve got plenty of water and a shady spot to shelter. The lighter evenings at this time of year make it ideal for late afternoon walks … and if they happen to end in one of our lovely local hostelries for some well-earned refreshments then all the better! We’re blessed with some beautiful countryside for a local ramble including far reaching views from higher ground like The Chevin, woodland walks and streams to dip your toes in to cool off; you really don’t have to venture far from the door to enjoy stunning scenery. If you do fancy exploring somewhere a little further afield, our walk this issue (on page 34) takes us on a short trip along the A6 to another lovely location – Bakewell – where you can enjoy a gentle stroll followed by some sightseeing in this picturesque town. Of course, summer is traditionally barbecue season and we Brits are usually fond of a spot of al

fresco cooking any time the weather allows – let’s face it, we don’t always get many opportunities! There’s nothing nicer than an evening enjoying food and drinks outside with friends and family. After the sun sets, clear summer nights are perfect for a spot of stargazing … or perhaps UFO spotting if that’s your thing! If you want some help getting your home or garden ready for entertaining guests this summer, turn to our Homes and Gardens section to find reliable local businesses who’ll be happy to help you bring your plans to fruition. If you’d prefer to dine out we’re lucky to have a huge choice of cafes, restaurants and pubs locally, catering for every taste, and one of these – The Sitwell Arms – will kindly be providing a Sunday lunch for 2 for the winner of our Prize Crossword on page 6. Try your luck to be in with a chance of winning! Or, to add some extra sparkle to your summer, why not enter our Champagne Sudoku on page 22? You never know … you could be the lucky person popping that cork! However you’re spending the next couple of months, we hope you have an enjoyable summer and we’ll be back in the autumn with our next issue. All the best, Team ATL

Just a Thought... Absolutely No Point!

Maybe it’s just me, but it seems like at this point in the year we’ve lost all patience and tolerance with and of ourselves. It appears that we are not prepared to do anything unless we can do it with full force and unquestionable dedication. It may be anything from juicing to jogging, or boxercise to baking and even mindfulness to milks, we just can’t give ourselves a break for trying. There are no shades of grey just the good and the bad, the winner and the loser, the success story, and the forlorn failure. It is not a good place to be mindset wise, is it? So perhaps you wanted to get fit – good for you! You took up Zumba in January and committed to 3 sessions a week, but life got hectic, and you are currently attending once a week, or a fortnight. The result is that you decide not to bother at all. Or

maybe you decided to go vegan and for a few weeks you were hitting all the nutritional goals and now your only real changes are Quorn Dippers and soya milk – and you berate yourself for even thinking you could try it. I just want to say one thing – WOAH! Life is punishing enough without you starting to criticise yourself for even trying to make improvements in the areas you feel need support. Now is the time to congratulate yourself for all the small shifts, the little changes and the mini miracles you weave into your life. #Bekind must be applied to you before you can apply it to others. PC Tips from your ‘Local’ Computer Tutor Spam Emails & Bogus Calls I have received both during the last week. As always, with a call, I put the receiver down. The emails can be very convincing. The first to my business address from Norton close to the expiry date, thanking me for renewing for 3 years at $399. Needless to say I was rather surprised as I had cancelled the automatic renewal. This in mind I began to look more closely at the email & from whom it came. The address was not from Norton. I wondered what the scammer could achieve from this email; maybe hoping the ‘customer’ would phone them about the amount. In turn, ‘Norton’ offering to refund to their account, thus gaining bank details? What ever their aim it would cause great anxiety. Keep Alert! Mesmerising Morocco Mazes of medinas, saffron-scented souks, sweeping deserts and epic mountain ranges: Morocco is a country of dizzying diversity. Just a mere three-hour flight away from London, it’s the perfect introduction to Africa, with a tantalising blend of adventure, culture and plenty of sunshine. There’s heaps to explore, so we’ve gathered together the top experiences to tick off while you’re there. Lose yourself in Marrakech’s medinas Marrakech is a city that sweeps everyone off their feet. It’s an assault on your senses, filled with enough sounds, sights and smells to keep you mesmerised for days. Trace intricate tilework, admire Islamic architecture, get lost amidst a maze of power-pink medinas and stop for some retail therapy in Djemaa El Fna square. A trip to the souks here warrants plenty of extra room in your suitcase – and your stomach! Spend some time in the Sahara Imagine falling asleep beneath a glittering tapestry of stars in the world’s largest desert. Few places on Earth compare to the Sahara, a sprawling expanse of vast plains and sun-baked dunes that occupy nearly all of North Africa.

were painted by the Jews who settled there after World War II. Put your camera to good use in the winding streets of the old medina, and browse the souks for trinkets and treasures. To top it off, Chefchaouen’s proximity to the Rif mountains also gives you access to beautiful hiking trails. Relax by the beach Boasting 2,500km of coastline, Morocco offers its fair share of blissful beaches too, but the most popular are in Agadir. This southern city is framed by a beautiful stretch of sand, and is also a popular spot for golfers. Known as the ‘Wind City of Africa’, Essaouira is another popular choice, particularly amongst windsurfers and kitesurfers who stay here for the city’s gusty coastal winds. Navigate the medina, admire the art galleries and watch the locals working on the electric-blue fishing boats that line the waterfront.

You can experience the magic of the desert yourself, with heaps of tours departing from all of Morocco’s major cities. From camel trekking and quad-biking trips to sandboarding and desert camping experiences, there’s something here for everyone.

Trek the Atlas Mountains Hiking a portion of North Africa’s highest mountain range is an experience not to be missed. The High Atlas runs across Morocco for almost 1,000km, spanning arid desert landscapes, snow-capped peaks and lush valleys. The range is also home to Morocco’s nomadic Berber population, who have an indigenous history dating back to 10,000 BC.

Visit the blue city of Chefchaouen Nestled in the heart of the Rif mountain range, Chefchaouen’s blue-washed buildings easily make it Morocco’s prettiest city. The reasons behind the blue aren’t entirely clear, but it’s believed the walls

With an elevation of 4,167m, Toubkal is the range’s highest peak and is well worth the three-day climb for the views alone. If you fancy something a little easier, don’t fear – there are scenic trails to suit every fitness level.

Pets

Hot Dogs (and Other Pets) Animals are not able to release heat through their skin as humans do, which makes them particularly susceptible to overheating in very hot weather. Leaving your dog in a hot car makes it prone to heat stroke within minutes, even if you’ve left the windows open and provided water. Equally, walking your pet in full sun, even for a relatively short period of time, is really unhealthy for them and comes with the added risk of burning the pads of their feet on the pavement. Cats don’t normally pant until they are already in distress. While most cats instinctively move to cooler locations as soon as they feel too warm, they could become trapped in a hot area like a greenhouse, garage, shed or conservatory. Smaller caged animals can’t move out of the sun of 22, 0, 0, 0check HSL: 200, course, and this makes itCMYK: essential you the88, 87 position of their cage, especially if leaving the house for CMYK: 91, 55, 63, 50 HSL: 180, 100, 12 some time.

Too late? Signs that your pet has overheated include panting (a very strong sign in cats), red gums, vomiting or displaying a lack of coordination, and you need to act quickly. Obviously move them into a well-ventilated, shady spot. Offer them cool (not cold) water and with larger animals wrap them in cool damp cloths, particularly the head. Finally, don’t assume your pet will just recover. Contact your vet immediately and be honest with them about what’s caused the problem. They’d rather work towards saving your animal’s life than judge you for a mistake.

Tantalising Telegraphs There are many special days in life. Birth, marriage, graduation… But did you know there’s a special day dedicated to telegraph poles? That’s right, get September the 21st recorded in your calendar and prepare to appreciate. In case you haven’t considered appreciating telegraph poles before, read on… As well as being super useful for carrying power or telephone lines, they are aesthetically pleasing (according to some folk) too. Pleasing enough for a society to be created in their honour. Now fellow telegraph pole enthusiasts can connect and share their love. Martin Evans began observing the dramatic beauty of poles stretching across the landscape of North Wales. He compares them to “dancers embracing the countryside”. They are a mainly rural sight as urban wires have often been moved underground instead. Excitingly, he has even been featured in the ‘Dull Men’s Club’ calendar as Mr November. Other featured dull people include a drain cover spotter, a roundabout enthusiast and a security envelope collector. Yes, these people are captivated by what most of us would consider mundane.

• Defunct telegraph poles have the potential for a new life in landscaping projects or as fencing amongst other things. • Ideas for appreciation day – hug one, photograph one and use the photo as your screensaver, write a poem about their majestic presence, or simply notice them on a walk. • Telegraph poles are also commonly used to communicate information about car boot sales, lost cats and the visiting circus. If you feel called to delve into the world of telegraph appreciation, a lifetime membership is a mere £9.99. Not only do you receive a certificate you can proudly display for all to see, you will receive just what you always wanted… Yes, the heralded ‘Telegraph Pole Appreciation for Beginners’ written by the founding member himself. This handy book will make sure you appreciate them in the proper manner. Please note, I have not been commissioned to promote this whimsical society. But - rather worryingly, after writing this, I think I’ve actually convinced myself to join…

By Jessica White

This quote from Martin Evans highlights his particular passion for the poles: “The notion of a specific appreciation day came on one of those fine late September mornings when I observed a fine run of poles disappearing off into the early mist over undulating fields. Rooks cawing from atop and with cobwebs glistening like jewels from the linesman’s steps and I thought more people need to feel what I’m feeling now.” It was this poetic sight that inspired him to create the Telegraph Pole Appreciation Society. Now over 1,000 members can share their excitement and enthusiasm for these silent sentinels. Some facts sourced about telegraph poles: • The average height of a telegraph pole is nine metres. They must be ‘planted’ at least 6 feet (1.2 metres) into the ground. • Telegraph poles are a common sight in the UK and Ireland. Wooden poles were removed in Holland as lines were moved underground, so this is not a dream destination for enthusiasts. • They are tested for safety after 12 years, then every 10 years thereafter. One pole is still going strong after 100 years! • Wooden poles are typically made from three tree species: Douglas Fir, Southern Pine and Western Red Cedar. • Originally, the cross arms at the top of telegraph poles faced in the direction of London. Use caution if using the poles as a sole navigation tool.

Heat 1 tbsp olive oil in a large pan (large enough to also hold the aubergine). Add the anchovy and garlic and sauté for 1 minute. Add the passata and season, then simmer for 10 minutes to thicken the sauce. Heat the remaining 1 tbsp olive oil in a frying pan and sauté the onion, pepper and celery for 5 minutes to soften. Word on Wine Hopefully the summer is in full swing with outdoor picnics and barbecues everywhere. You will therefore need wine to enjoy at your outdoor event. I was lucky enough to visit a Château in central France a few years ago, and sample some great easy drinking white, rosé and red wines made by an Englishman. Gavin and Angela Quinney brought Château Bauduc in the Entre-Deux-Mers region in 1999 and moved their family there, having previously lived and worked in the city of London. The Château is around 15 miles from Bordeaux, 15 miles from Saint-Émilion and is surrounded by some 200 acres of wood, fields and of course vineyards. A third of the land is covered by over a thousand rows of vines in a glorious landscape of rolling hills. They produce Sauvignon Blanc, Sémillon, Cabernet Franc and are permitted under the appellation d’origine contrôlée rules to also grow Malbec, Petit Verdot, Cabernet Sauvignon and Carménère. Some of their older vines were planted in 1947 by the previous owners of the Château. Their

white Sauvignon Blanc and rosé wines have become the house wines for Gordon Ramsey and Rick Stein’s restaurants. Gavin and Angela decide in advance which sections of the vineyard will be used for the rosé wine, from all the sections of red grape vines they will use for their red wines. The rosé wine is made using 40% Cabernet Franc, 40% Merlot and 20% Cabernet Sauvignon. The grapes are picked in late September, earlier than if they were making straight red wines, and are lightly pressed to extract the white internal juice of the grape and only getting minimal contact with the red skins. This produces a light, crisp, pale strawberry coloured wine. The wine is produced in their own winery using 30 temperature-controlled stainless steel tanks. Bottling and labelling is done by a mobile bottling plant that visits the vineyard when the wine is ready. The bottled wine is stored at the Château before being sent to Northern Ireland, Ireland, Switzerland and, of course, the UK. Technical Details: Grape: 40% Cabernet Franc, 40% Merlot and 20% Cabernet Sauvignon Appearance: Clean, pale pink strawberry hue. Nose / Aroma: Light nose of fresh fruit. Taste: Hints of raspberry and strawberry with a light finish Alcohol by Volume: 12% Food match: Pasta and fish dishes or on its own. Available from: Direct from Château Bauduc - £12.50 per bottle (plus quantity and loyalty discount) For more information about Château Bauduc and to buy their wines, visit their website www.bauduc.com. Delivery is next day on most orders as the wine is stored at the London Bond Company warehouse in Burton. Beer Homebrew, for many, conjures up memories of warm, barely drinkable beer being brewed from a kit (that only needed to have water added) and stowed in the airing cupboard, in an attempt to stimulate the yeast to work its magic and turn the sugar into alcohol. Tales of exploding fermenting vessels were commonplace, however the craft has moved on a fair bit in the 30 to 40 years that followed. It’s not a given that, just because people love to drink beer, they will inevitably be led down the path to homebrewing. However, for an increasing number of people that is indeed the case. Their motivations and inspirations may differ, but their curiosity generally starts with wanting to peer behind the curtain. That certainly was the motivation for me. I dipped my toe in probably 12 years ago with a friend, making a few batches from malt extract and adding the dry hops and yeast at the end of the boil. Inadequacies in our brewing equipment (a stock pot and a plastic fermenter) meant that we didn’t do everything by the book. A couple of fairly successful beers later, we started to get complacent, thinking we knew all about this brewing lark and started to play at being Willy Wonka. A festive beer was the next brew, with seasonal spices being the plan; what we got, however, was an undrinkable beer that wouldn’t be out of place in a charlatan doctor’s medicinal bag. A hiatus then ensued. A few years ago, with the stimulus to make beers that I would like to drink, I invested in a ‘Grainfather’ (all-in-one brewing system, hailing from New Zealand). This piece of brewery kit makes the brewing process a slick one,

24

notwithstanding the need to sterilise and clean between brews. At its most basic, you can follow a recipe already tried and tested by the Grainfather brewing community, via the very handy app, which neatly communicates to the brew kit. At its most complex, it’s a scaled down brewery with unlimited possibilities. All grain brewing is definitely where the fun and rewards come from. Sourcing the right malts and hops for your own curated recipe is fulfilling. Spending five hours brewing your chosen beer isn’t a chore, especially if you make it a social occasion and brew with a buddy, where talk inevitably turns to ideas for future beers. Fermenting the beer is where you need to show patience and resist the temptation to take a peek. Introducing oxygen into a beer during this stage is likely to introduce off flavours and aromas and having somewhere that is temperature controlled, rather than leaving it to chance under the stairs, allows you to predict how the beer will turn out and repeat it, if it turns out to be a banger. More recently, I upgraded my kit again, with a now 100-litre capacity (oh, and I built a brewery in the garden!). A recent trip to Brussels has inspired me to brew a Belgian Golden Ale and a Biere De Garde, which I will be able to enjoy the fruits of during the summer months. Motoring

Motoring First Drive: Megane E-Tech Does the Megane E-Tech Electric show the future of Renault? Jack Evans finds out what it’s like: What is it?

The Megane E-Tech Electric is the first of a new generation of Renault EVs. So, what can it deliver?

What’s new?

Crucial to the new Megane E-Tech Electric is the CMF-EV platform underpinning it, which is dedicated to electric cars and results in better packaging and a more efficient layout. Fitment of the batteries underneath the car’s floor should give better handling and improved cornering.

What’s under the bonnet?

There are two powertrains, offering either 129 or 215bhp, plus options of a 40kWh or 60kWh battery bringing respective ranges of 186 or 292 miles. 0-60mph takes 10.3 seconds or 7.2 seconds respectively. Renault gives an eight-year battery warranty and it’ll replace it should the battery drop below 70 per cent of its nominal capacity. It can accept a charge of up to 130kW, meaning 186 miles of range added in 30 minutes to the smaller battery option via a rapid charger. A full charge via a 7.4kW home wall box will take just over six hours for the smaller battery version or just over nine for the larger.

What’s it like to drive?

Our most powerful version of the Megane E-Tech has good power and brisk acceleration. Renault has quickened the steering and though this is helpful around town, it can feel a little light at greater speeds. Through fast, flowing bends it felt composed and settled, and it’s also fantastically quiet and refined.

How does it look?

It’s great-looking, with interesting features and futuristic

touches. The design makes it seem a little bigger than it actually is. At the back is the now ever-present light bar and a quite high boot line, giving the car a raised-up appearance.

What’s it like inside?

The regular Megane focused on practicality inside a relatively compact package, but headroom and legroom are quite tight for rear passengers, while the letter-box-sized rear screen means restricted rearward visibility. The front passenger and driver have a good view ahead and plenty of space. The 440 litre boot has a very high load lip that drops into a deep area. There’s underboot-floor storage for the cables, though you’ll need to empty the boot to access them.

What’s the spec like?

The Megane E-Tech adopts a new, good-looking, twin-screen wrap-around – the main infotainment screen is detailed but easy to operate and the driver display is much the same. The infotainment setup adopts Google’s technology, and features such as Maps or Spotify are well-integrated. We wish Renault had cleaned up the stalks at the side of the wheel; three on the right-hand side is too many.

Verdict

The Megane E-Tech Electric is a progressive step forward for Renault. It looks great, will have enough performance for most and has a good rate of charge. Practicality needs improvement but it’s likely that Renault will correct that and deliver a car with more space. But, as the first push into a new age of electric Renaults, the Megane is a very exciting prospect.

Anything we haven’t got in stock we can usually get on the same day.” Best Grip’s main brand is Nexen – a value for money tyre that offers quality without the price tag of the bigger names. The brand is now frequently fitted by car manufacturers due to its quality and competitive price. Nexen offer the

reassurance of a tyre lifetime guarantee, providing either a puncture repair or replacement in the event of a problem (dependent on level of wear)*. Offering tyres, wheel alignment and puncture repair for all types of vehicles from cars to vans, 4x4s and light commercials, the team at Best Grip Tyres provide a free, no obligation tread and pressure check to make sure your vehicle is safe and running efficiently. If you’ve got any concerns about your tyres, call to see the team for an honest evaluation of their condition. For reliable tyres and a good, honest service call Best Grip on 01332 883103 or pop into 182 Derby Road, Denby (near the Kilburn Toll Bar traffic lights). Health, Beauty & Fitness

Fitness Matters

Change starts with your mindset; that’s the most important thing. Make changes slowly. Focus on a small change each week and achieve that week’s goal. Then, add another the following week.

So You Want to Lose Weight?

Diet books have a formula. If you look at numerous books you’ll see they all approach losing weight in pretty much the same way. They start by identifying a reason why you’re struggling to lose weight, and show you how your health could be made so much better by eating the method stated in the book. They convince you that your health problems aren’t your fault, that you’ve been misled, and promise a new method to help beat this enemy. They set out a rigid plan and promise that if you follow it you will finally be set free – this way of eating will be the miracle cure. Seriously! This is a multi-billion pound business and, the reality is, if you keep falling off the wagon you’ll then buy into another method to try. I manage a condition through being good with food, so I’m the first to realise how important food is and the devastating effect the wrong foods can have on our bodies, but I also realise that life is short and you have to pick a plan that you can maintain, which becomes a way of life.

The average person knows that eating more vegetables is good for them, but may not understand how to identify protein in a meal. They probably know that eating too much fast food is not ideal but often knowing isn’t the problem, it’s understanding how to do it. This is why diets often fail, because they don’t help people to eat better by just telling them what to avoid, you help people by giving them better systems that allow them to adapt to what they prefer and make better choices. You need to build better habits or rewire the way your brain thinks about obstacles, so you’re strong enough to handle a curveball, rather than a rigid plan that isn’t built for real life. If you want to become healthier, stop stressing over every single food you eat and instead focus on methods of self-improvement, habits, mindset and stress reduction. If you possess the ‘how’, then the ‘what’ becomes easier. By Alex Robinson Level 4 Personal Trainer with additional qualifications in GP referrals – Pre- & post-natal exercise. Footnotes: Why Are My Toenails so Thick? Thick toenails are often assumed to be caused by the growth of fungus under the toenails and in the toenail itself. In many cases, this assumption is correct. However, there are other things that will make a toenail look thick and distorted – injury to the root of the nail can cause temporary thickening, while severe or repeated injury can cause a nail to become permanently thickened. Skin conditions such as psoriasis and eczema may also affect a nail if the skin around the nails is affected. If the problem is being caused by a fungus, there is usually some yellowish or brownish discolouration of the nails. Topical treatments for fungal toenail infections are often not very effective because they don’t soak into thick toenails very well. The challenge is to get the nail as thin as possible and then apply a preparation that has the ability to penetrate down through the layers and contact the fungus. In severe cases I will use a special kind of rotary burr to reduce the nail thickness as much as possible to give the anti-fungal preparation every chance of getting to the root of the problem. This alone usually vastly improves the appearance and comfort of the affected nail or nails. By Peter Waugh, Amber Feet

Derbyshire Walking:

Peak District Walk – Cracknowl Hill and the Monsal Trail from Bakewell Distance – 3.5 miles / 5.7 km Time – 2 hours Grade – Easy Author – Jake Robertson Start – OS grid reference SK223689 Postcode DE45 1GE (approx. location only) what3words start: lightens.late.umpires This is a very gentle Peak District walk along the Monsal Trail and over an unassuming but unexpectedly lovely hill pasture. It’s an idyllic hour or so escape from the crowds in Bakewell with some beautiful views over the town and surrounding countryside and the Derbyshire Dales. It’s a shorter walk, making it an ideal one for the warmer summer months, and can be followed by some time browsing or enjoying refreshments in the popular town of Bakewell. The Route 1. Park at the Monsal Trail car park at Bakewell Station on Castle Hill (grid ref. SK223689). Walk past the station buildings and turn left onto the Monsal Trail. 2. Follow the trail for about 1 ½ miles until you near the Toll Bar House. It’s flat all the way with views opening out towards Longstone Edge once the bookshop and café at Station Farm is passed.

gently onto the pasture. After a short climb it undulates for about half a mile to reach the high point at 210m (grid ref. SK 214697). Although not explicitly named on the maps, this hilltop is locally known as Cracknowl Hill, and it certainly deserves a name. Shy and unobtrusive it does have a quiet charm about it and is a delightful viewpoint for the higher surrounding hills. The view south over Bakewell with its church spire sticking out of the trees with the mass of Stanton Moor rising impressively to the south is especially good. 4. Continue along the track which begins to descend, passing through an open field with many fine picnic spots, to a gate. Through the gate the track becomes metalled and there’s a steep but short drop down to the road (Holme Lane) by the River Wye (grid ref. SK215690). 5. Turn left for a short way until you can take a path on the right down by the riverbank which is followed underneath the main road to the road bridge (grid ref. SK219687). 6. Cross the main road onto Station Road with the car park only a short five-minute climb at the top of the road.

3. Take a walled bridleway on the left (grid ref. SK214707), signposted to Bakewell, and climb

Dear Sir / Madam, Re: Would you like to sell your house this month? Hi, my name is Amanda. I am a local property investor. I am buying properties in your area as I am regularly asked by tenants for properties in this area. The differences between selling your house to me and using an estate agent:

• There are no “viewings” - with lots of people visiting your home, bringing with them the possibility of infection. • I specialise in buying properties very quickly, between 7 and 28 days is my normal purchase period • I can buy with cash so that you don’t get messed around by mortgage lenders slowing things down • I pay all your estate agent and solicitor fees - the price I pay is actually what you get • There is no board outside or advert in the paper, just a fast, smooth, relaxed confidential sale • To hear how real local people have found our service visit www.ethicalpropertypartners.com

Call me for a guaranteed offer on your property. If you accept my offer before the end of the month then I will either give you £250 cash in advance or pay your mortgage for you until we complete the purchase of your property! This could get the mortgage company off your back immediately! I hope that you don’t mind my direct approach but I thought that I’d write to ask you if you would like to sell your house quickly? If you are keen to sell within a month with no hassle from agents charging you fees, viewings that waste your time and buyers offering and then backing out, then I can definitely help. I offer a guaranteed purchase of any property which means that all you have to do is give me a call and I’ll give you a price that I guarantee to buy your property at. If you decide to sell to me you could have the money in your account within a month. If you want to sell quickly then give me a call today 01332 289572 I’ll look forward to hearing from you.

Kind regards,

Amanda Amanda Doyle, Ethical, Local Property Investor

Quote the code below when you call and I will pay you £250 cash in advance if you decide to sell ATL250

P.S. Call me on 01332 289572 TODAY and have the money for your property in your bank account in only 28 days! P.P.S. Don’t delay...take advantage of my special offer... accept my offer before the end of the month and I can start paying your mortgage for you IMMEDIATELY! Don’t miss out, CALL NOW on 01332 289572 RIGHT NOW!

Book Reviews Crafts, Hobbies and Weekend Projects Learn Drawing Quickly Sharon Finmark

This little book packs in a huge amount. You’ll find plenty of practical advice on composition, shading, perspective, proportion, choosing materials and so on, along with simple exercises and ideas for subjects. There’s everything from watercolour flowers to sketched urban street scenes. An overarching theme is finding the beauty in everyday objects – a kitchen shelf, kids playing on the carpet, a man’s shirt. If you want to start drawing, improve your existing skills or just get some fresh inspiration, this book is a must.

Woodwork: The Complete Step-by-Step Manual Published by DK

Many of us tried woodwork in school. And for most of us, that’s where we left it. If you fancy dusting off your skills, this book could prove invaluable. There’s detailed guidance on tools and techniques, as well as step-by-step instructions for a wide range of projects, from a simple chopping board and wine rack to a more ambitious glassfronted cabinet and gateleg table. Whether you’re learning how to sharpen a bench plane or make a bookcase, the full colour photographs and easyto-follow instructions will make your life a lot easier.

She’s in Ctrl Anne-Marie Imafidon

Perhaps you’re looking to turn a hobby into a career? Women are currently under-represented in tech. In She’s in Ctrl, computer scientist Anne-Marie Imafidon looks at how more women could be encouraged into engineering,

coding, physics and other STEM careers. She shares her own story, as well as those of other female pioneers who are helping to transform the world of science and technology.

Nature Cuts Georgia Low

Aimed at beginners and enthusiasts alike, Nature Cuts is full of projects to get stuck into. You’ll find a list of required tools at the start of the book, as well as lots of advice and tips on cutting, scoring, choosing paper, folding, transferring designs and so on. And, of course, twenty beautiful, nature-inspired projects, from floral photo mounts to tealight lanterns.

Breadsong Kitty and Al Tait

Part memoir, part cookbook, Breadsong tells the story of Orange Bakery founders Kitty and Al Tait. At fourteen, Kitty sank into a cloud of depression so deep that she struggled to get out of bed. One day, her dad, Al, persuaded her to bake a loaf of bread with him. Soon they were baking daily, making loaves for friends and family, and experimenting with new recipes. Breadsong features the most successful of those recipes, from Sticky Fika Buns and Salted Caramel Happy Bread to Overnight Foccacia and Ultimate Chelsea Buns. A must for baking fans.

Property Matters

Extend and Refurbish, or Knock Down and Rebuild? If you’ve got an old house that needs serious renovations, it may be more cost-effective to simply demolish the property and build a new one in its place. Whilst the prospect of starting from scratch may be a little daunting, it usually makes better sense financially. Here are just a few reasons why: You can make VAT savings on a new build With a new build, you can reclaim the cost of materials used to construct the property, whilst labour is zero-rated. With an existing structure, however, you will need to pay full VAT on both labour and materials used. You’ll need to pay for the cost of demolition, but this will be more than compensated by the amount you save in VAT expenditure. New houses are better insulated Generally speaking, houses built several decades ago were not designed with energy efficiency in mind and insulation technologies were nowhere near as effective as they are today. If you build from scratch you can invest in cuttingedge insulating materials to keep the property warm during winter months. By doing so, you will save money in the long term by cutting down the need for central heating and slashing gas and electricity bills.

Lower chance of damp problems and improve ventilation Many older houses were not made for resisting damp, which is very pervasive and can cost a lot of money to get rid of. To get rid of unsightly mould patches and improve the health of your household in a new-build, you simply need to invest in a few cheap damp-resistant materials such as moisture-resistant flooring, paint and efficient extractor fans. In a new build you can also ensure that there are plenty of ventilation units to keep the air feeling fresh to avoid damp issues. Install green technologies Building a new house offers excellent opportunities to invest in green technologies, cut down your carbon footprint, and ultimately save money on electricity and heating bills. Consider things like roof-integrated solar PV panels, an air source heat pump heating system, a high-efficiency log fire, low-energy LED lights, underfloor heating, and a charging point for your electric car. Homes & Gardens

Gardening There’s More to Gardens than Plants Plants are the linchpin of a garden, the lifeblood of a space, lending movement, atmosphere, colour and soul. They provide calm energy and an essence of spirit, making a garden pulse with life, including the society of tiny creatures that coexist with vegetation and flora. But there is more to a garden than these essential, addictive growing forces of nature. It hinges around design and layout. It’s all about interest. If you can see everything at a glance, then your space could be improved. The eye likes to be led from one thing to another and a sense of intrigue is always a positive thing.

Use climbing plants that are suitable for the aspect and the height that you need. There are clematis for north-facing sites as well as sunnier situations. Climbing roses can be secured to steel planting wires or trellises, or choose something that is self-clinging such as Hydrangea petiolaris or a beautiful ivy with variegated leaves. Did you know that our native ivy, Hedera helix, is hugely beneficial to wildlife, supporting at least 50 different species? The value of adornments Sculpture, mirrors, ornamental pieces and trinkets can look wonderful… or not. Placement is key. Smaller items need to be partially hidden so that they seem to be part of the garden landscape, rather than appearing to have dropped out of the sky. Any number of statues can be placed amongst planting so that you barely know they are there. You might glimpse a beady eye when you’re admiring the geums or catch a flash of light from a mirror concealed within ivy. Introduce water, seating and shade Water adds a further dimension and even a tiny bowl can enhance the quality of any garden because it is a world in itself. Ponds can help to improve mental health in addition to lowering blood pressure.

Every garden can provide a desire to explore. A change in levels always helps, so a flat space might benefit from a step up to a patio or a step down to a seating area. It provides somewhere to ‘go’ and a reason to move throughout the space. If the garden has potential for a circulation route, provide one. A different entry and exit point will enable you to travel around the garden rather than stepping in and out via the same route. Then there is the illusion of blurring the boundaries. Nobody needs to feel confined by fences or walls. Those fences can be partially, if not wholly, hidden.

7272

Don’t forget to provide somewhere to rest, in which to feel safe and relaxed. Give yourself a protective screen and something to lean against. In an overlooked space where prying eyes seem to be watching you, consider a canopy, sunshade, pergola or tall shrub. Think of a garden boundary as the room, the hard landscaping as furniture and plants as the beautiful, soft interior furnishings that give the wow factor. Enjoy yours this summer! By Caroline Knight

Children & Education

The Diary of a Local Mum

Parenting under the Spotlight Millions of people watched the recent Jubilee celebrations but, despite the huge spectacles, parades, crowds, concerts and celebrities, there was one person who stole the show. A very little person … Prince Louis. Yep, while singers performed and soldiers marched, planes flew overhead and the royals gathered to celebrate the Queen’s 70-year reign, one small boy was just being himself and, for days afterwards, it was all anyone could talk about. His big brother and sister, with a few more years and the maturity to understand their expected roles, smiled and waved dutifully – the perfect example of ‘royal’ behaviour. But Louis, aged just 4, and possibly of a more naturally mischievous disposition (inevitably, comparisons with Uncle Harry have been drawn!) unsurprisingly fidgeted, pulled faces and displayed a bit of cheekiness after hours of having to sit, smile, stand still and behave, watching events that didn’t really float his boat. Of course there was some criticism (when is there not?) but largely the public found the boy’s behaviour endearing and strongly empathised with William and Kate, who did all they could to keep the young prince in check whilst their every reaction was being watched and analysed by the whole world. The merest hint of a cross look or some muttering through gritted teeth would have been analysed to the nth degree. Not only was the boy expected to behave, but his parents couldn’t be seen to put a foot wrong either. I can’t imagine anything worse. We’ve all been there. Whether it’s a wedding, christening, theatre trip, school event or a meal out, you name it, when there’s a social expectation or a strong desire for your young child to toe the line they’ll inevitably react. Even if they’re usually the most mild-mannered and compliant of children they pick up on the pressure and your feelings of unease, wait until they’re required to sit still and be quiet, and then do the exact opposite. How the Duke and Duchess got through those 4 days I will never know – and without the usual arsenal of bribes, too!

Imagine how much they’d have been criticised if they pulled out a bag of Haribo or let Louis watch Peppa Pig on Kate’s phone just to snatch a few minutes’ reprieve? Social media would have been on fire! And it’s not just during events where you can feel your parenting is being scrutinised. There are often people in our lives – they can be our own parents, in-laws, professionals, neighbours or even so-called ‘friends’ – who seem to judge and comment on the way we do things. Parenting is difficult and, without a manual, we only have our own instincts to go on. We often second guess what we’re doing, worry we’ve got it wrong and berate ourselves for the way we handled certain situations, so the last thing we need is for others to join in with the critique, too! No one is immune from this constant analysis, with many celebrity parents being judged for their choices or actions. David Beckham, often heralded as the ‘perfect’ father of four, sparked a huge debate when he was pictured kissing his daughter on the lips, Beyoncé was blasted for drinking wine when she was still breastfeeding her twins, and let’s not get started on the time David Cameron left his daughter in the pub… We’re all human. We all make judgement calls and sometimes, mistakes. I’m willing to bet that all the online trolls who are quick to call out celebrities, or the people in your life who cast aspersions, have also made mistakes. People in glass houses shouldn’t throw stones. What works for one doesn’t always work for another, so why not just accept that the way we choose to parent our kids is going to differ? If you’re feeling like your parenting is under the spotlight stop trying to second guess what you’re doing and just take a minute to think – does this feel right for you and your child? If the answer’s yes, just smile and carry on. And, if in doubt, ask yourself – ‘What would Kate do?!’

Poem: Spider Month! September mornings, still and stunning - garden lawns adorned with dew Clean and crisp, yet colder, as the last of summer passes through Schools return and autumn shows that she is not too far away September brings late sunshine - and ‘things’ that hid until today Concealed corners dark and dusty - from beneath your sofa, bed or chair A scuttling silent shadow swiftly escapes its loitering lair You’re not quite sure you saw it - the merest blinking of an eye But better safe to check again, to see if something speedily scoots by Eight legs that move so briskly, the shape has gone before you know No matter how hard your eyes may search - you can’t tell where it’s gone below You know it’s lurking somewhere - in which direction did it dart, Each movement, noise or just that thought, is no good for the heart! You should always check your bedclothes and routinely shake your shoes

Ensure nothing’s on hung dressing gowns, or inside boots you’ve hardly used You’ll spot them contrast clearly though, in shower trays, or sinks or bath But this un-invited visitor will make you scream and yell, not laugh There are folks that just don’t mind them - kind cupped hands that set them free, But, if spiders make you shudder, then you’re very much like me You know that most aren’t dangerous - look at the size of them to you In fairness we should let them be - what real harm can spiders do? So if you’re one of the many people, dreading spider webs in wait You’ll know arachnids have abilities to predict September dates!

Friendship Blooms Show your appreciation for a fellow member of the community; it may be a friend, a family member or maybe someone you’ve come into contact with who provides a wonderful service or who works hard to make a difference. Let All Things Local surprise them with a fresh bouquet of flowers.

Rachael Collins from Fleur Florist

All Things Local has joined forces with Rachael Collins (pictured) from Fleur Florist of King Street, Belper to offer readers the chance to show their appreciation for a fellow member of the community. The recipient of this issue’s bouquet is Thelma Blount from Ripley. She was nominated by Carol Ratcliffe of Denby Village. Here’s what Carol wrote: “I would like to nominate Thelma Blount from Ripley as she is such a kind and considerate lady. Thelma has been ill for some years now; she has had operations which haven’t helped her. She lost her son 3 years ago and then last year, 2 of her daughters were diagnosed with cancer. While the lockdown was on, she travelled to her friend’s to do her shopping as her friend was unable to do it. Thelma did this every Wednesday and still continues to do so. Thelma is so thoughtful and would help anyone regardless of all her upsets and I know she would be delighted to receive a bouquet of flowers.” Carol Ratcliffe. Nominate someone to receive the next bouquet. All you have to do is state, in no more than 100 words, who you are nominating. Include their address and the reasons why you are nominating them. You can nominate more than one person if they are living/ working at the same address… and remember, flowers don’t just have to be for women! The only rule is that the person receiving the flowers must live or work in the distribution area of All Things Local Village Edition (listed on front cover). Just write your nomination on a piece of paper and send to Friendship Blooms, All Things Local, 74 Woodhouse Road, Kilburn, Belper, Derbyshire DE56 0NA or e-mail your nomination to karyn@allthingslocal.co.uk putting ‘Friendship Blooms’ as the subject. Please include your full name, address and daytime telephone number on your nomination.

Local History Something from Strutts

The Strutts building is elegant and, in every way, pleasing to the eye. Its rooms are spacious and adaptable to most groups or situations and the fact that the school building was purpose built is immediately evident. However, what it does not have is a theatre so a stage or performance area must be created to suit the event, which in itself encourages creative thinking! These practical problems have never stopped the building from hosting some memorable theatre events and it has been exploited by generations of school pupils. I have memories of excellent productions such as Agamemnon and Murder in the Red Barn, to name just two, and I have read positive reports of earlier performances of Our Town and The Importance of Being Earnest, along with many others. School productions were well staged, visually creative and memorable. We have some excellent records in our school archive.

Strutts was also the first performance venue for some well-known actors. Alan Bates attended the grammar school between 1945 and 1951 and during that time took part in several school plays. As many people know, he then went on to star in films such as Whistle Down the Wind, Far From the Madding Crowd and Women in Love. His theatre work is less well known but includes the role of Cliff in Osborne’s Look Back in Anger and Mick in Pinter’s The Caretaker.

80 80

Timothy Dalton also attended Strutts School, where he demonstrated his acting talents, between 1957 and 1962, after which he trained at RADA. Later he was to work with The Royal Shakespeare Company and in a BBC production of Jane Eyre, in which he played Mr Rochester, before making films which led to him being cast as James Bond. But we should return to the school and to the Arts events which still take place there. Belper Players are major users of the facility and have presented a strong repertoire over the years and the Captive Audience Theatre Company regularly uses the premises. Throughout each year the community centre welcomes Arts events of all types; at present it is working with Live and Local with the intention of hosting a professional show annually for Belper audiences. We have also been known to stage specialist evenings celebrating the works of some of our major writers such as Shakespeare, Dickens and Jane Austin. We hope there will be more so please watch this space! The Arts can play a very large part in the lives of people of all age groups as a means of enhancing their approach to teamwork, problem solving and critical thinking. With many schools now side-lining artistic subjects in favour of the core curriculum, any exposure to live performance can only be good. So please come along to the performances from our various local groups and keep a lookout for guest appearances. We hope to see you soon. By Joan Hardy Strutts Society Committee www.strutts.org.uk

Upbeat

The Importance of Looking Up This summer, many of us will be taking advantage of the lighter evenings and warmer weather by heading out for a wander more often. However, many of us also don’t pay attention to our surroundings when out and about and statistics show that 30% of serious road incidents are related to pedestrians who are distracted in some way. Serious injury and even death can be avoided by us taking the time to unplug, ignore the phone and focus on what is going on around us. Traffic Management Officer Steve Hughes said: “There are an increasing number of distractions in our lives, especially as mobile phones and technology are always fighting for our attention. We are advising that everyone takes the time to put these devices down, look up and be aware of the potential dangers around them as a pedestrian. “We would also encourage adults to have conversations with young people about this issue, as over the past three years those aged between 10 and 19 have accounted for over 20% of pedestrian casualties in Derbyshire.” Advice from the Children’s Accident Prevention Trust urges

parents to lead by example, teaching children good habits from an early age. We also see a peak of incidents between 3pm and 4pm, which coincides with when many older children may be making independent journeys home from school and putting their road safety training into practice. Although pedestrians cannot be responsible for the actions of drivers, they can keep themselves safe with this advice: • Stop, look, and listen before crossing the road. • Use fully marked pedestrian crossings; they are the safest place to cross. • Pay attention to your surroundings and avoid using mobile devices whilst crossing any road. • Hold children’s hands when walking along the road. • If there is no footpath, walk/run/jog on the right-hand side of the road, facing oncoming traffic as close as possible to the side of the road and keep looking, keep listening If you do have concerns that a vehicle is being driven unsafely, please report this to us via the non-emergency methods: • Facebook – send a private message to /DerbyshireConstabulary. • Twitter – direct message our contact centre on @DerPolContact. • Complete our online contact form – www.derbyshire.police.uk/contact-us. • Phone 101. Pride in Belper This summer sees the return of the first ‘in person’ Pride in Belper since the pandemic! The first event, run in June 2019, was the brainchild of local couple Sarah and Helen Barley-McMullen and a committee of volunteers. They envisaged a small get-together on the Memorial Gardens but passion and support from the community drove it to become something much more exciting and it was a resounding success. Since then, virtual events have ensued, but this year the team are looking forward to getting everyone back together on 6th August for a celebration that’s bigger and better than ever! Pride in Belper originated with the idea of bringing Pride, which is often celebrated in major cities, to a smaller town to raise awareness of LGBT+ issues. But Pride in Belper is more than that – it’s an event for everyone! It’s all about positivity and inclusivity with ‘Pride’ as the overriding theme: pride in who you are, pride in what you do, and pride in the town where we live. Hence ‘Pride in Belper’ rather than ‘Belper Pride’. Committee member, local children’s author and inclusivity advocate, Fliss Goldsmith, explains: “The passion of it is that it involves the whole community. We’re spotlighting businesses, celebrating the town and all the wonderful things

about Belper. The focus is on inclusivity and accessibility, providing a space for everyone to come together and feel safe, supported and celebrated whoever they are and however they identify – because we’re better together!” The event begins with a unique twist on a Pride March, called ‘The Strutt’, starting from the Market Place at 12noon. Anyone can join in to strut their way down King Street, kicking off the celebrations. There will be family activities on the Memorial Gardens, stalls in the town centre, a café at No.28 on the Market Place run by Derbyshire LGBT+ (where a fabulous accessible toilet called the ‘Mobiloo’ will also be situated), and music in various locations all day. A special Pride in Belper Ale created by Shining Cliff Brewery will also be available. So put 6th August in your diary! It’s set to be a riot of colour, fun and music, with a party atmosphere that brings everyone together in a supportive, celebratory event. For more information about the day and events surrounding it, including a dog show on 7th August, visit www.prideinbelper.co.uk.

Bereavement Matters

There are a million and one things that people would rather do than sit down and make plans for their own funeral but, for those who do, the peace of mind it brings is well worth it. Like making a will, drawing up a pre-paid funeral plan, with the money set aside to pay for it, reduces the huge burden on their families when the sad time comes to put the plan into action. However every year brings many families a nasty shock, when the funeral plan their loved one set up fails to meet the cost of the arrangements because it was mis-sold or was offered by an unscrupulous provider whose promises didn’t meet the original buyer’s expectations. Sadly we hear about families in this situation all too frequently, which is why Gillotts has welcomed the Financial Conduct Authority’s recent drive to safeguard people’s investments in pre-paid funeral plans by agreeing to regulate schemes on behalf of consumers.

At the time of writing it had just announced the 24 providers that it was planning to authorise when its regulation begins on July 29 and, happily, our own chosen plan provider, Ecclesiastical Planning Services Limited, was among them. Ecclesiastical’s philosophy has always been to focus on safeguarding and investing funds to maximise the amount available when the time comes, which is very much in keeping with the ethos of the new regulations. In fact, the 24 plans on the authorised list hold 87% of all of UK customers’ plans, indicating that the vast majority of plans issued are deemed suitable, well-run and fair, and it requires that they will have to follow new FCA rules, which include a ban on cold calling and commission paid to intermediaries, as well as high standards on governance and financial resilience. All in all, it is good news for families and for the good guys in the pre-paid funeral plan world, and it goes without saying that anybody who is unsure about whether their plan is covered should seek advice as soon as possible in order to earn themselves that all-important peace of mind.

By doing so, this would give consumers greater protection for their money, including access to the Financial Services Compensation Scheme, and, importantly, would prevent providers of other non-regulated schemes from continuing to administer pre-paid plans.
