WELCOME LETTER

Hello readers

Welcome to the June/July issue! We’re pleased that the weather has improved since we last wrote and we’re currently enjoying a healthy dose of sunshine to top up those depleted vitamin D levels!

We’ve said it before and we’ll say it again – there’s really no better place to be than the Derbyshire countryside (although our walk this issue does venture over the border to Nottinghamshire, but that’s lovely too!). With an extended Jubilee Bank Holiday weekend from 2nd – 5th June it’s a perfect opportunity to get out and enjoy all that our local area has to offer. There’ll be loads going on to celebrate our monarch’s Platinum Jubilee from street parties for ‘The Big Jubilee Lunch’ to services and events as communities come together to celebrate the Queen’s historic reign. The Queen isn’t the only one celebrating a big anniversary though – June marks 15 years since the launch of All Things Local! So, while you’re celebrating the Jubilee please raise a toast to ATL too! We’d like to say a HUGE thank you to all our readers, advertisers, contributors and distributors who’ve helped to make ATL a success for 15 incredible years. If you’re planning to make the most of the extra Bank Holiday and get away, you don’t need to venture far from home – avoid all those motorway queues and enjoy a break away from it all just a stone’s throw from your own front door! We’re blessed with many wonderful campsites locally where you can wake up to fresh air and stunning views. Or, if the prospect of a night on a slowly deflating air bed doesn’t appeal, there are plenty of local holiday lets too! Of course, now that we’re able to travel further afield, many of us will be enjoying a long-awaited holiday abroad over the next few months. Team ATL are all looking forward to breaks that have been rescheduled from 2020! All the advice seems to suggest that it’s currently taking longer than usual to get

through airports so, for a stress-free start to your holiday, make sure you allow yourself plenty of time. If you need to book a taxi transfer, our advertisers Connect Cars (page 15) and Holbrook Travel (page 16) are highly recommended. Don’t forget that Father’s Day is on 19th June, so make a note to say ‘thank you’ to the father figure in your life. There’s a perfect Steak Chimichurri recipe on page 23 if your dad is a barbecue fan or, if you enter our ‘Champagne Sudoku’ competition on page 22, you could be toasting him in style! There’s also an opportunity to win a delicious 2 course weekday lunch for 2 courtesy of Angelo’s Bistro at The Kings Head in Duffield in our Prize Crossword competition on page 6 – if you haven’t tried Angelo’s yet you’re really missing a treat! So, all that remains for us to say is have a fabulous couple of months! We’ll be back again soon but in the meantime enjoy all that our June/July issue has to offer – and please keep shopping locally and supporting our wonderful array of local businesses. All the best, Team ATL

Life List Trip off the Tongue Not sure whether to holiday abroad this year? Do you lack foreign language skills, and suffer from an inability to add up in any currency other than pounds and pence? If so, help is at hand with our staycation ideas, tailored to your needs. If funds are low you might feel most at home in Northern Ireland, visiting BALLYMONEY or LACK, or across the water in CASHMOOR. Do you enjoy arguing about the service charge and whether to leave a tip? Why not try YELLING and BATTLE, or a weekend in CHEAPSIDE?

SALE, DEAL or ANDOVER? Feeling nostalgic for an Essex break? Don’t look back in ONGAR because your trip might turn UGLEY. Dog owners could find a warm welcome in LEEDS or BARKING. Not so sure about CATFORD though. What about a specialist coach tour for the follically challenged, stopping at AYR, WIGTOWN and BARNET? (But never BALDER!)

Feeling peckish? With DUNDEE it’s a piece of cake, and you can enjoy a full English at FRYUP.

If you don’t take yourself too seriously, RYE or GIGGLESWICK could be good for a laugh. Or maybe you’d be happy to settle for SETTLE, unless you have BIGGAR dreams?

If you’re pushed for time leave EARLEY to beat the traffic and get a ticket to RYDE, but you may want to think about a BACUP route.

Did you know? AMESBURY has been continuously occupied since 8820 BC, which could explain the traffic on the A303.

Feeling the Heat As much as humans and animals alike love some sun, your dog needs a little bit of extra care at this time of year as the weather warms up. Paw Pads Although warm weather and long walks go hand in hand, your dog’s sensitive paw pads can be scalded by hot pavements. Walking early or late and on the shady side of the street helps, but you could also apply paw wax to prevent the pads from drying and cracking. Pesky Pets Fleas and ticks love the summertime so check for any parasites, particularly when you’ve walked your dog in wooded or grassy areas. Ticks should be removed as soon as possible as they can start transmitting disease within a couple of hours. CMYK: 22, 0, 0, 0 HSL: 200, 88, 87

your dog a favour. But although in theory it makes them cooler, it also removes all their sun protection – and covering your pet with factor 50 is never going to be a fun job. A good brushing as the weather warms up is a great start, as it removes any build-up of dead hair. Taking your pooch to a professional groomer will mean enough – but not too much – hair is clipped. The close attention that your groomer will give to your pet will also ensure they’ve had a look at ears, paws, nails and skin, and picked up any developing problems before they become serious.

Five Reasons to Visit Sardinia Sun-bleached beaches, glistening shores and mouth-watering food: Sardinia is a holiday destination from heaven. Here are five reasons why this Italian island should be on your radar when booking your next escape. 1. It’s a beach lover’s paradise Whether you’re a family looking for shallow waters or a couple seeking a secluded spot off the beaten track, Sardinia has a beach – or spiaggia – for everyone.

cheese, garlic and mint leaves, layered with a sweet tomato sauce.

With over 1,800km of pristine coastline, you’ll be spoilt for choice on where to stay. Cala Brandinchi, nicknamed ‘Little Tahiti’, is the island’s most famous beach. Its shallow waters are perfect for swimming, while the surrounding pine trees offer plenty of shade.

3. It’s more than a beach break From colourful villages and rustic towns soaked in history to ancient stone buildings dating back thousands of years, Sardinia has plenty of sights and experiences to coax you away from the sand. Walk the city walls of Alghero, explore Nora’s Roman ruins or take a hiking trip into the island’s lush green mountains.

Or if you’re looking for some peace and quiet, look no further than Spiaggia di Piscinas along the Costa Verde. This ribbon of golden sand is home to a vast expanse of dunes, rising up to 60m.

If you’re feeling adventurous, but want to stay close to your resort, you could even try some water sports. Sailing, windsurfing and scuba diving opportunities await!

2. The food is divine Sardinia’s food is enough reason to visit alone. A wealth of local culinary traditions mixed with the island’s Italian roots combine to create a delicious cuisine heavy in grilled and spit-roasted meats, and a mouth-watering array of cheeses.

4. It’s the land of luxury Wake up to a view of the sparkling sea and while away your afternoon in designer boutiques before enjoying a dinner fit for a king: there’s a reason why Sardinia is so popular with the rich and famous.

You’ll find all the classic Italian favourites such as pizza and pasta on most menus, but the local specialties are well worth a try. Su Porcheddu, or roast suckling pig, is a must-try for meat-eaters while vegetarians will love Culurgiones – pasta filled with potato, pecorino

The glistening Costa Smeralda region, stretching from Porto Cervo to Portisco, oozes style and sophistication. Pick your favourite superyacht, treat yourself to lunch in a gourmet restaurant and keep an eye out for famous faces. Sardinia’s beauty attracts celebrities from all over the globe! 5. The holiday season is long Blessed with a warm Mediterranean climate from April to October, Sardinia is renowned for its ‘six-month summers’. The island is at its hottest in July and August but Sardinia also enjoys a balmy climate in April, May, September and October, giving you the chance to stretch out your summer for longer. The shoulder season is a great time to visit if you’re looking for a quieter escape and slightly cooler temperatures. It’s also a prime time to buckle up your walking boots and do some exploring.

The Point of Pens We use them a lot and possibly take them for granted, but the humble ballpoint pen is an essential item. In honour of Ballpoint Pen Day on the 10th of June, let’s take a look at the world of the biro... Ballpoints revolutionised writing Gone is the frustration of a leaky fountain pen! The ballpoint pen is a cleaner alternative preventing ink spillages ruining written work. They are easily transported and don’t need to be refilled. Ballpoints make art Many artists use the medium of the ballpoint pen. Being cheap, mess free and convenient are just some of the advantages. A range of artistic styles are achievable, from photo-realistic pieces to dramatic geometric drawings. Mark Powell is a Yorkshire based artist who creates beautiful biro drawings on antique documents. He chose the biro as “it is the most simple and readily available tool to hand.” He inspires people to have a go at creating their own artwork; a pen and scrap of paper are all you need.

this pen, you’ll never see it again’ phenomenon. I imagine we are all guilty of this crime; perhaps it is just part of a pen’s natural life-cycle? Some biros are dangerous... Banks and building societies are notoriously distrustful of their pen stocks. This must be the reason they chain them up. Not only does this prevent them from being stolen – or borrowed – they are unable to slip into a wormhole and end up on planet ballpoint. Don’t forget to recycle them! Belper Town Council provides a pen recycling point in the porch at Saint John’s Chapel. This is an eco friendly alternative to letting them wander into space.

They break records The largest ballpoint pen was made in India by Acharya Makunuri Srinivasa. It measures a whopping 5.5 metres and is decorated with scenes from Indian mythology. The only problem is it takes a small group of people to lift it, so it’s not the pen of choice for a quick shopping list.

in the heart of Shining Cliff Woods, Ambergate • Open all year • Accommodates up to 20 people

Not useful for space travel The ballpoint mechanism relies on gravity, so pack a pencil instead for your trip into orbit. Douglas Adams, author of The Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy, imagined “a planet entirely given over to ballpoint life forms” populated with unattended ballpoint pens. That’s why you can’t find that pen you used just the other day. They WILL be ‘borrowed’ Biros appear to travel independently. You swear you left it on your desk, but next time you look it’s gone. This can be explained by the ‘can I borrow a pen?’ phenomenon. More accurately titled the ‘I’m taking

Just a Thought...

Put Some Pride in Your Stride! As the Heather Small song goes, ‘What have you done today to make you feel PROUD?’ Well, if you ask me, being you is certainly something to be proud of! You are so many things to so many people. Your very existence in this world is miraculous when you consider that the likelihood of ever being born is an estimated 1 in 400 trillion! Let that soak in for a second, pop your cuppa down and breathe in that incredible information – the possibility of you even existing is that enormous. It is almost the point of impossibility in scientific terms.

question yourself, you speak unkindly to yourself, and you stop believing in yourself. This is your reminder that YOU, dear reader, are impossibly sensational. So, when you go about the rest of your day, I would like you to move differently. Be Proud of who you are – let that shine out. And, once you have absorbed that feeling of Pride, pop a note on your calendar that Saturday August 6th is Pride in Belper and that is an event for everyone to come and feel proud of who they are. See you soon Proud People.

You can continue with your cuppa for the rest of the article, you have my permission. I know that life can feel overwhelming. I understand that there are ever increasing worries regarding finances, jobs, homes, schools, decisions and more. I see the demands on our time and energy out stripping our available resources. And I know that all of this means that some days you

Word on Wine Staying on the Spanish wine theme from the last issue, it occurred to me that everyone may have heard of Spain’s main red wine grape but not know much about ‘Tempranillo’. The name is derived from ‘Temprano’ which in Spanish means ‘early’. The vine buds burst around the same time as other grape varieties, but the grapes ripen anything up to 3 weeks before any others. Being Spain’s most widely planted vine, you would think that it would like the hot dry climate of Spain, but it thrives best in the cooler, high altitude Atlantic influenced regions of Rioja, Rioja Alta and Rioja Alavesa, as well as the high altitude region of Ribero del Duero in the west, where the days are warm and sunny and the nights cool and windy. The grapes are produced in tight bunches which can make them susceptible to fungal disease, but it is kept away by the night’s breezes. The vines like clay, limestone and chalky soils. The Tempranillo grape is also known by various other names, dependent on the region. Cencibel in Castilla La Mancha, Tinta del Pais in Ribero del Duero and Ull de Llebre (‘eye of the hare’) in Catalonia. In Portugal it

Win a bottle of Champagne courtesy of All Things Local!

is known as Tinto de Toro, Aragonez, Tinto Fino and Tinta Roriz, where it is used in the production of Port and still wines. As the Spanish influence spread around the world, Tempranillo began to be grown in Argentina, Chile and California; it has even been tried in Australia and New Zealand. The wine I would like to present is the Finca Carello Tempranillo 2018 from Majestic Wines. Their buyers found the first Finca Carello wine in the cellar of a top-name producer, where they struck a bargain to buy the top quality wine at a discounted price and have kept this tradition going over the years. Although this is 100% Tempranillo, it is a blend of grapes Castilla y Leon and Ribero del Duero, creating a wine that could cost twice the price that Majestic sell it for. This produces a jammy, dark fruit flavoured wine from both the hotter region of Castilla and the cooler region of Ribero del Duero. The end result is an easy-drinking wine with elegant tannins, spices and a good finish, to be enjoyed with red meats particularly roast lamb. Technical Details: Grape: 100% Tempranillo grapes Appearance: Clean, deep red. Nose / Aroma: Warm cedar, black cherry and blackcurrant notes. Taste: Deep dark cherry and red fruit flavours with a hint of spice and vanilla with balanced tannins and finish. Alcohol by Volume: 14.5% Food match: Full flavoured beef or lamb dishes, or hard cheese and charcuterie. Available from: Majestic Wines, Derby - £9.99 per bottle (reduced to £6.99 as part of a box of 6). For more information and to buy the wine visit the Majestic Wine shop on Ashbourne Road in Derby or www.majestic.co.uk. Recipe Barbecue Steak with Chimichurri Dressing Chimichurri is a delicious spicy herb sauce ideal for serving with meats. For maximum flavour, marinate the steak in a little of the sauce overnight. When barbecuing, remember that cooking times will vary depending on the thickness of your steak and how you like it cooked. Instead of using the barbecue you can also griddle the steak. This recipe serves four as a light dish or two as a larger main. Serves: 4 (light dish), 2 (larger main) Preparation time: 15 minutes Cooking time: 8 minutes Marinate: 1-2 hours or overnight Ingredients: 2 x 150g lean beef fillet steaks 200g bag of mixed salad leaves 4 radishes, sliced thinly ½ a cucumber, cut in half lengthways and sliced Chimichurri sauce 1 garlic clove, crushed Pinch of sea salt Pinch of black pepper ½ a red chilli, deseeded and chopped Large handful of flat-leaf parsley leaves Handful of coriander leaves Pinch of ground cumin 30ml apple cider vinegar 75ml olive oil Nutrition per serving: 285kcal, fat 24g (of which saturates 4.7g), carbohydrates 0.9g (of which sugars 0.7g), protein 17g

Method: Place the sauce ingredients in a blender and process to form a chunky sauce. Place the steaks in a shallow container. Spoon a third of the sauce over the beef. Cover and place in the fridge for 2 hours, or overnight if possible. Remove the steaks from the fridge and allow to reach room temperature. If barbecuing, make sure the barbecue is medium-hot. Alternatively, heat a griddle pan until hot. Cook the steaks, using long-handled tongs to turn, until cooked to your liking (2-4 minutes on each side). Turn the steaks once only during cooking – any more and the juices escape, which can make the meat tough. Remove from the pan and allow to rest for 5 minutes. Slice thinly. Place the salad on a platter and top with the radishes and cucumber. Place the steak slices on top. Drizzle over the sauce to serve.

Beer Witbier A hazy wheat or ‘white’ beer traditionally uses a recipe that includes equal amounts of very pale barley malt and unmalted wheat, plus a small percentage of oats. This combination of malted and raw grains provides a creamy, almost milk-shake quality that forms the backbone of the beer’s balance and creates the notable mouthfeel you get from this style of beer. Historical styles hovered around the 3 to 4% ABV range; modern versions are closer to 5% ABV. Hopping is very light. Classically it is a spiced beer, with coriander and bitter orange peel lending pleasant spicy and fruity notes on top of what the fruity yeast strain delivers. Done right, witbier shows off a splendid opalescent sheen, a result of residual starches from the traditional mashing process. The style originates around Leuven and Hoegaarden, in central Belgium. Once the everyday drink of the region, by 1960 it was a dead beer, until it was revived by a man named Pierre Celis, who resuscitated and nurtured the style back to health, creating the Hoegaarden brand as he did and the popularity of this style has steadily grown since. If you can find any of these beers, they come highly recommended: Allagash Brew Co – White 5.2% A mention of witbier without highlighting this excellent beer would be amiss. Formed in Portland, Maine, Rod Tod has been brewing this beer since 1995. Spiced with coriander, Curaçao orange peel and an undisclosed secret ingredient (which many believe to be Grains of Paradise), this beer is crisp and refreshing, with

24

big citrus notes and spiciness. Expect a full-bodied mouthfeel, and little to no bitterness on the finish. After a slow start, with beer drinkers unsure of what to make of it, thanks to the support of craft beer bars, Allagash White’s reach widened. Then there was the whole surge in popularity of Blue Moon, which helped to push Allagash’s craft beer roots to the forefront. Merakai – Understanding People 5.6% Hailing from East Sussex, Merakai are fast becoming one of my favourite breweries. This classic to US style witbier, a collaboration with Danish brewery People like Us, is lightly hopped with Amarillo and lemondrop hops. This has loads of spice from the coriander, a fresh citrus aroma and a moreish ‘orangeness’ that makes it a pleasure to go in for another mouthful. Chapter Brewing – Netting the Sun 4.2% This is a smooth witbier with a light sweetness and a delicate lift from coriander seed, lemon, orange and grapefruit zest, finished with a touch of camomile. It is further dry hopped with Citra, Amarillo and Willamette. This is so refreshing, the zest additions really add a lemony, fruity vibe and the addition of the camomile gives it a dry herby, floral finish. By Sean McKeown Twitter: @belperbeerclub

Motoring

Motoring The Cars Best Suited to Longer Journeys For many people, long-distance driving is a common occurrence. Be that for work or personal reasons, sometimes doing big miles is a part of daily life – and a car that’ll conquer big trips without breaking a sweat can make a real difference. So here, we’re going to be looking at the cars that’ll take the backache out of long-distance journeys.

Mercedes S-Class

We’re starting with a car that is famed for its comfort and refinement. The S-Class – which was recently revised – has always brought a sumptuous quality to driving and this latest version is no different. Thanks to air suspension and armchair-like seats, the SClass is a car with which the hours will fly by – be that for passengers or drivers.

If you’re after all-out comfort then Citroen has historically been one of the best options. Its latest C4, despite its distinctive design, has kept this time-honoured tradition to heart, maintaining high levels of comfort and refinement. There’s also an electric version that, with its 217-mile range and rapid charging capabilities, isn’t just restricted to local drives.

Peugeot 3008

Peugeot, much like Citroen, has many years’ worth of experience when it comes to creating cars that are comfortable over long distances. The new 3008 is no different, with well-sorted suspension combined with comfortable chairs in one refined package. Many drivers will appreciate the somewhat raised-up driving position it offers, too.

BMW 8 Series

BMW has a fine history when it comes to making comfortable yet involving grand tourers and the 8 Series is a great extension of this. It’s superb to drive and will monster even the longest stints with no hesitation.

Genesis GV80

There’s also an excellent diesel that, though not the most sporting of options, gives the 8 Series excellent long-range abilities.

Skoda Fabia

Cars don’t need to be large in order to be comfortable. The Fabia is a great example of this, packing big-car refinement into a compact set-up. It’s surprisingly spacious, too, while a range of efficient petrol and diesel engines means it’s not expensive to run, either. Skoda has also kitted the Fabia out with loads of features, ensuring that those long journeys remain as comfortable as possible.

26 26

Citroen C4

Genesis is a relative newcomer to the UK, but it has already seen great success in countries like America. The GV80 is a car infused with stateside appeal; it’s big, spacious and – importantly for this list – comfortable. The interior is particularly plush, while a silky straightsix diesel performs very well over long distances.

Audi Q5

Audi’s extensive line-up of SUVs might mean it’s a little tricky to choose, but we’d still opt for the Q5 given the choice. A mainstay of the firm’s range for many years now, the Q5 is a great option for families or those who need a little extra space. But if you’re after the best possible ride comfort, don’t be tempted to opt for a Q5 on larger alloy wheels – they tend to upset the suspension somewhat.

Short Story Dirty Nelly’s “I think the best light is through the French windows.” Gladys dragged the chaise longue across the room. “Jean, would you stop skulking around and help.”

“Who is he, anyway?” Jean asked. Not that she would know, Gladys thought, she hardly knows anyone with any culture.

Gladys was all of a flutter. Before breakfast, she’d received an email from a gentleman photographer who’d been so impressed with her portrait that he’d asked if she would mind posing so that he could recreate it.

“A gentleman called Callum Duffy.” Gladys checked her appearance once more in the mirror. “Though I’m not familiar with his work.”

“What portrait?” Jean scratched her head.

“I’ve no idea who that is.”

Gladys’s only guess was the pastel portrait done by a neighbour’s nephew who was taking a GCSE in art, commissioned when she was Chair of the Friends of Yarrow Avenue. After briefly adorning the community centre noticeboard, it now hung above her downstairs lavatory.

“He works behind the bar at Dirty Nelly’s.”

“You’re very quiet.” Gladys thought her assistant Jean, who was never especially vibrant, seemed downright sluggish today.

“He’s got a camera on his phone.”

“I was at Dirty Nelly’s last night celebrating my birthday.” Jean yawned. “Won a bottle of Cava for best fun fact in the quiz.” Gladys considered ladies of a certain age had no business celebrating birthdays. And in Dirty Nelly’s of all places. She had never been in, but if the sign above the door of a busty barmaid holding six pints of beer was any indication of what went on inside, then the place was clearly a den of iniquity.

“Not Duff-head Duffy?” Jean’s eyes widened.

“Well obviously it’s not him.” Gladys brushed her hair rigorously, ignoring the sinking feeling in her stomach. “Though these penniless artists do need to subsidise their income with menial work.”

Jean was testing her patience when she wanted to look serene and poised for her portrait. And, right on time, the doorbell rang. “Answer that, will you.” She composed herself on the chaise longue. “Send him directly into the drawing room.” “Where?” “In here.” Within moments Jean shuffled back with a skinny young man in tow.

“Which you drank, and are now paying the price,” Gladys tutted. “So what was your fun fact?”

“Duff-Head’s here.” Jean plonked herself down on the arm of Gladys’s best sofa.

“It was just about the pub sign. I never claimed it was true.” Jean clamped her mouth shut.

“Callum, how nice to meet you.” She extended her hand for him to kiss like she’d seen artists do in films. “How do you want me?”

Gladys sighed. Jean was getting worse. Pub quizzes, birthday celebrations, she’d be getting her ears pierced next! “This ‘artiste’ is arriving any minute, so look lively,” Gladys snapped. “He won’t want you hanging about.”

30 30

“Right. Take hold of these six pint glasses.” He pulled them clinking out of his rucksack. “I’ll grab my phone and we’ll get started.” By Jackie Brewster

Health, Beauty & Fitness

Fitness Matters

• The best nutrition plan is one you can stick to within your lifestyle and time commitments. Adopt a mantra of ‘better not perfect’ when it comes to your eating habits.

Tips to Be Ready for Summer

Are you fed up with feeling frumpy, unfit and dreading having to get rid of the baggy clothes that hide a multitude of sins? Summer is almost here and you should be looking forward to enjoying the best season of the year. While we are all aware that we should look after our health and wellbeing all year, the reality for most people is that it only becomes a priority as an occasion or holiday is looming, when we realise how those extra pounds make us feel.

“A goal without a plan is just a wish” • Set a realistic target, whether it’s to lose weight or inches, or to be able to walk 5km. Break this down into smaller goals and focus on them as you keep heading in the final goal’s direction. • Nutrition is key if your goal is to lose weight or inches. We don’t need to count calories but calories do count, so be aware and try to focus your mind on eating for health and energy. You’ll automatically eat fewer calories and begin to shed body fat.

• One of the most common questions I ask clients is ‘How much water do you drink?’ Not tea (unless herbal), coffee or alcohol – just water. Ideally, set a goal of 2-3 litres a day. You may think you’re hungry when you’re actually dehydrated. • Exercise has so many benefits including improving heart health, flexibility, balance, sleep, and mental health. Moving each day should become part of your routine. There are no shortcuts… but we can train smarter. Set challenging but attainable goals so you won’t feel like you’ve failed on week 1. • Remind yourself ‘why’ by keeping your goal in sight daily – whether it’s a photo or an item of clothing. Focus on the small steps like 1lb weight loss in week 1. In 14 weeks that becomes a stone. Focus on each day and the week will look after itself. If you self-sabotage one day, forget it and get straight back on it – we are all human. Footnotes: First Aid for Summer Feet I hope that by the time you’re reading this it will be summer or maybe even beach holiday weather – you may even be tempted to walk around barefoot. If you do and happen to get a cut or graze on your foot, here are a few tips on how to deal with them: Small wounds on the feet of otherwise healthy people heal best if the wound surface is thoroughly clean and protected from pressure. Small, clean wounds where there is little or no tissue loss are best simply covered by a dry dressing such as a plaster. Dirty or infected wounds require application of an antiseptic. Creams should not be used on moist wounds, since they will cause further wetness. Wet wounds require dry powder or alcohol solution medications. A good option is to use a small piece of cotton wool to apply a coat of Friar’s Balsam to the wound; this may sting for a second or two until the alcohol evaporates but it is a very good antiseptic and, as a happy side effect, makes plasters and dressings stick very well to the skin. Dry, clean, simple wounds normally heal quickly and easily. Deeper or infected wounds may well take longer and may need redressing at early and frequent intervals. Healing may also be slow in people with diabetes or poor circulation, or the very elderly. If you don’t feel that a wound is healing as it should or is becoming painful or hot or showing any signs of swelling or discharge, don’t hesitate to see a doctor or practice nurse in case antibiotics may be required. Walking: Newstead Abbey from Linby Distance – 5.8 miles / 9.3 km Ascent – 250 feet / 76 metres Time – 3 hours 10 minutes Grade – Easy Author – Wendy Vivian Start – OS grid reference SK534509 Postcode NG15 8AB (approx. location only) what3words start: slowness.promoted.natural

This issue we’re crossing the border into our neighbouring county of Nottinghamshire for this scenic walk around Newstead Abbey. This circular walk starts from Linby, a conservation village, and uses part of the dismantled Great Northern Railway line to get to Newstead Abbey, the ruins of an Augustinian Priory built by Henry II in 1170. The return to Linby is through Abbey woods and Papplewick village. The Route 1. From the Top Cross in Linby village (grid ref. SK534509) walk up the hill to the traffic island. Turn right onto the path signed Linby Trail and National Cycle Network. This is along a railway cutting which follows the route of the Great Northern Railway. Here you will walk alongside a pond and see plenty of wild flowers and plants associated with railway lines. At one point on the left some of the present day railway line called the Robin Hood line which runs into Nottingham can be viewed. To the right there are large conservation areas.

2. This straight path continues for some considerable time until some large boulders are seen ahead partially blocking the path. Here the path turns sharply to the right, still signposted the National Cycle Network alongside a woodland walk which may be visited if time allows. 3. The path then joins a tarmac road at one of the lodges to Newstead Abbey estate. Passing through this gate (there is no charge for walkers) follow the road until Newstead Abbey ruins come into view. The road is mostly flat apart from a couple of short climbs through glades. There are views over the countryside and horses grazing in the fields on either side. 4. As the road descends towards Newstead Abbey the upper lake and stable block can be seen to the left followed by a waterfall and then the magnificent aspect of Newstead Abbey comes into view with the garden lake to the right. Although originally an Augustinian Priory built in 1170 it is best known as the ancestral home of Lord Byron. There is a charge to visit the museum which houses Byron memorabilia and gardens. On the grassy areas in front of the Abbey there is usually an abundance of ducks and peacocks grazing. 5. Follow the road round to the left between the ruins and the upper lake. Ahead is the stable block and bell tower. After passing a car park on the left and the cricket pitch to the right there is a crossroads. Turn right here and follow the tarmac road winding through the woods until a pair of wrought iron gates appears ahead. 6. This is the entrance to another lodge; a footpath for walkers is marked to the right of the gates and follows alongside a hedge. At the other end there is a metal kissing gate to pass through before

following a wide grassy path ahead with hedges on either side.

continue alongside a hedge bordering an arable field until it emerges onto the main road B6011 into Linby.

7. At the end, proceed through a metal gate and onto an unmade road which bears to the left and has large properties on either side. Follow this road called Hall Lane until a tree can be seen ahead in the middle of a small grassy area with a seat where the path meets the main road B683.

10. Turn right and follow this road into the village passing the Bottom Cross on the right and the old village school. On the left hand side, next to the bus shelter, is an interesting Parish Map of Linby explaining the history of the village. Continue up the hill to the Top Cross to the start of the walk.

8. Papplewick Hall can be seen immediately to the right at this junction. Turn right along the road, with a footpath, following it into Papplewick village. It bears sharply right past a row of cottages and then right where there is a wide gap after Papplewick lodge showing a sign to The Church of St James Papplewick and a public footpath signposted to Linby.

Please note: There are no specific car parks in the village but beside the bus stops on either side of the road there are lay-bys to park in with no restrictions and no yellow lines.

9. Pass through the wooden gate and follow this tarmac road in the direction of the church, which unfortunately is kept locked when not in use. Before reaching the church there is a well-trodden signed path on the left through the fields to Linby. At the end of the field, pass through a metal gate and over a wide footbridge over the River Leen and then

Property Matters

Thinking of extending your home or building a new house? Do you dream of bright, airy spaces and beautiful, elegant windows? Would you like a larger, lighter, brighter home? Or are you thinking of building your own home to get exactly what you dream of? BDS Architecture are expert home designers, who understand your vision of a smoother, sleeker home, and will strive to make it your reality. Each issue we will be offering our advice on various aspects of the home design process. Natural Lighting If you want a bright house with natural lighting instead of artificial bulbs, let’s take a look at the options… Often a house actually gets plenty of light, but that light isn’t used effectively. Trees and bushes cut out a considerable amount of light, even when they are a distance away. Curtains encroaching on the sides of windows can cut down the clear area of glass. Leadwork also reduces light more than you would expect!

Choose windows with minimum amounts of frame. White frames make a great choice because they also reflect more light. Light coloured floors brighten the whole room, especially if you place a roof window above so the light can be reflected upwards. Replace solid internal doors with glass doors and you’ll maximise the amount of light passing through your house. Skylights let in bright daylight for most of the day and really let you maximise the light available to you. You can even install a sun pipe if you’re dealing with a windowless room. Where possible, position windows in the east for the sunrise and in the west for the sunset. Roof windows collect light all day and really make the most of those golden hours! To discuss your project call us today on 01332 830313.

Homes & Gardens

Gardening What Do We Mean by Exotic Plants? When we talk about exotic plants, it simply means those that are non-native. But did you know there are now only around 30 truly native species, plus subspecies and hybrids that have naturalised themselves here? The term ‘native’ is generally defined as trees that established themselves in Britain around 10,000 years ago. This was the end of the last ice age, at a time when the English Channel was gradually forming. The Ages of Discovery and Enlightenment saw more and more explorers setting off around the world and bringing back unusual plants. Many ended up in private collections or in botanical gardens. This extended the range of plants within the UK, and we have come to love and admire many of these introduced species. The glorious Liquidambar, or sweet gum, for example, is native to Asia, parts of the Mediterranean and North America. Many acer trees originate not only from Japan but also from China and Korea. The tulip tree, Liriodendron tulipifera, hails from North America, and many of the flowering cherries originate from Japan, China and the USA. Even apple trees have an exotic history! The original ancestor of many modern apple cultivars can be linked back to an ancient apple: Malus sieversii. This wild apple is native to the

mountains of Kazakhstan in Asia, where they can still be found today. It’s not surprising that UK trees have succumbed to many devastating problems. One of the first to be widely recognised was Dutch elm disease, which was said to have been accidentally imported from Canada in the late 1960s. It is thought to have killed over 30 million elms. Ash dieback was first reported around ten years ago and this disease is expected to kill up to 95 per cent of Fraxinus excelsior. In the last 30 years there have been more than 20 serious problems caused by imported pests and diseases. Many diseases are caused by fungus pathogens, such as Phythopthora ramorum, which is affecting larch trees, and Phythopthora pluvialis, which affects western hemlock, certain types of pine trees and the Douglas fir. The latter was originally found in Oregon in the USA. The Oak Processionary Moth, native to southern Europe, is now found in London and restrictions on movement of oak trees have recently been put in place by Defra (Department for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs). Should we avoid planting exotics, or welcome species that are not native? UK trees are declining so rapidly that there is a strong case for extending the range. This means planting non-natives that will safeguard the future tree canopy, especially now that we know the true value of trees in respect of tackling climate change. There is a lot to be said for strength in diversity. Our woodlands, garden planting and the wider landscape requires futureproofing and cannot adapt fast enough without our help. The right plant in the right place, for both now and the future, has never been so important. By Caroline Knight

Children & Education

Parenting: Encouraging a Love of Reading According to BookTrust, children who enjoy reading tend to have better literacy skills, increased vocabulary and enhanced general knowledge. Reluctant readers may need some extra help to discover their inner book worm, however. Lead by example Show your child how much you enjoy reading, even if it’s just by flicking through a cookbook or burying your head in a magazine. You could also take family trips to the library, give books as gifts and talk to your children about the books you’re both reading. The BookTrust also recommends that parents and children try reading the same book occasionally. You could take turns reading a chapter aloud or you could both read on your own and then discuss what you like and dislike about the book. Let them choose There’s a temptation to guide children towards ‘suitable’ books but try to let your child choose their own. Some may prefer factual books, such as Horrible Histories, over fiction. Others may prefer magazines or short stories that they can dip in and out of. Meet authors Libraries, bookstores and other venues often have visits from local authors, who will give a talk, read an extract from their latest book and answer questions. Book festivals or events often include talks by children’s authors – to find out what’s going on locally sign up to the library’s mailing list, search for ‘author’ on www.eventbrite.com or go to www.literaryfestivals.co.uk. Interactive books Children who find reading too passive an activity might prefer books with interactive elements. Usbourne’s Puzzle Adventure books are a good place to start. They tend to feature two main characters who have an adventure and are faced with a series of puzzles, such as coded letters and cryptic clues, which the

7474

Gavin Brookes and Matilde Warren

reader helps to solve. You could also look for ‘choose your own adventure’ books, where the story unfolds depending on which paths the reader decides to take. Picture books for older children Picture books aren’t just the preserve of prereaders. Series such as ‘Diary of a Wimpy Kid’, ‘Dork Diaries’, ‘Tom Gates’ and ‘The 13 Story Treehouse’ are illustrated books aimed at children aged around 7 to 13. They’re relatively quick reads, which can help to inspire confidence. Omegas Omega oils have long been linked with brain power, and new research has found that a combination of omega-3 and omega-6 fatty acids may improve children’s reading abilities. This research was carried out on behalf of supplement brand Equazen which found that children on Equazen’s omega supplements showed a 64% greater improvement in reading comprehension than the group not on supplements. Extra activities Some publishers have websites for young readers. At www.clubs-kids.scholastic.co.uk, for example, you can read interviews with authors, enter competitions and download activities. At www.penguin.co.uk/puffin, parents can sign up to receive a free downloadable pack of word searches, crafts and other book-inspired activities, and www.penguin.co.uk also has a range of extracts, quizzes and children’s book recommendations. Visit www.booktrust.org.uk for more advice on inspiring a life-long love of reading.

The Diary of a Local Mum

Slipping Through My Fingers… We recently enjoyed a three-generation trip to the theatre in Nottingham to see Mamma Mia – myself, my daughter and my mum. It was a brilliant night and really precious to be able to spend time together enjoying each other’s company with lots of laughter. But, as always, one song in that musical really got to me. Despite having had a really lovely evening, the following day the song ‘Slipping Through My Fingers’ echoed around my head and, in ABBA’s words, I was left with “that odd melancholy feeling” … I wished “that I could freeze that picture, and save it from the funny tricks of time”. I’ve talked a lot about the passage of time and the ways that it ebbs and flows throughout the years as your children grow up. It can crawl by or fly by, and usually not the way you’d want it to either. But those ABBA lyrics always tug on my heartstrings… “Slipping through my fingers all the time I try to capture every minute The feeling in it Slipping through my fingers all the time…” There are many moments of my kids’ childhoods that I wish I could rewind. Memorable times that I’d love to relive, but also vague memories I can’t quite grasp – experiences that are on the periphery of my mind, recollections that I’d like to properly cement in full, vivid colour to ensure they’re never lost. And then, there are the insignificant moments, where there’s nothing really to remember but a look, a feeling, just time spent – those “Sleep in her eyes, her and me at the breakfast table; barely awake, I let precious times go by” moments. How many of those have I let slip by?

leave home! We’ve done a lot … but we also haven’t done a lot more. It’s undeniable – they are slipping through my fingers. They’re growing, changing. They have their own minds, their own interests, opinions, ideas, goals, aspirations … they’re doing exactly what they’re supposed to and growing up into fine young people ready to go out and make their own way in the world without needing to hold my hand. “Do I really see what’s in her mind Each time I think I’m close to knowing She keeps on growing Slipping through my fingers all the time” But then, as I sat nursing “a surge of that well-known sadness” I had to give myself a proverbial kick. I’d just enjoyed a wonderful night with my mum and daughter – what a privilege! I am so lucky to be able to do this and I know many people sadly aren’t as fortunate. Instead of focusing on what’s gone by, the times we can’t relive, I should be focusing on what we have, what we’re doing here and now and what’s to come. Yes, it’s true – as little ones they’re ‘slipping through my fingers’ and they’ll grow up and eventually leave home … but I’ll still be their mum. The nature of our relationship will grow and change of the years, but that’s something to cherish too. When I thought of all the people all over the world who have been suddenly robbed of the privilege of time with loved ones, I felt very guilty for mourning days gone by instead of appreciating everything I have here and now. So ABBA, I’ll say a wholehearted “Thank you for the music” but, for this particular tear-jerking song, I’m no longer going to dwell on the lyrics.

There are the memories we didn’t make too: “What happened to those wonderful adventures? The places I had planned for us to go? Well some of that we did, but most we didn’t And why I just don’t know” As the kids get older I feel an increased sense of urgency to ‘cram it all in’ before they up sticks and

Friendship Blooms Show your appreciation for a fellow member of the community; it may be a friend, a family member or maybe someone you’ve come into contact with who provides a wonderful service or who works hard to make a difference. Let All Things Local surprise them with a fresh bouquet of flowers.

Rachael Collins from Fleur Florist

All Things Local has joined forces with Rachael Collins (pictured) from Fleur Florist of King Street, Belper to offer readers the chance to show their appreciation for a fellow member of the community. The recipients of this issue’s bouquet are Ann and David Harris from Kilburn. They have been nominated by Derbyshire Children’s Holiday Centre Support Group. Here’s what they wrote: “We would like to nominate Ann and David Harris for the ‘Friendship Blooms’ award for the following reasons: David has served the local community for many years as an active member of the Kilburn Community Association, Church Warden at St Clement’s in Horsley and the Rotary Club of Belper. The charity nearest to his and Ann’s hearts has been the ‘Derbyshire Children’s Holiday Centre’ in Skegness. David has been the chairman and fundraising officer for 25 years and served as a trustee for many years prior to this. The hours David and Ann have devoted to this charity cannot be calculated; they have truly given their all. David has recently stepped down from his work with the charity and all of us who have worked and fundraised under his guidance will miss the wonderful times we’ve had together. Many thanks.” Derbyshire Children’s Holiday Centre Support Group. Nominate someone to receive the next bouquet. All you have to do is state, in no more than 100 words, who you are nominating. Include their address and the reasons why you are nominating them. You can nominate more than one person if they are living/ working at the same address… and remember, flowers don’t just have to be for women! The only rule is that the person receiving the flowers must live or work in the distribution area of All Things Local Village Edition (listed on front cover). Just write your nomination on a piece of paper and send to

Ann and David Harris with their lovely bouquet.

Local History Belper People of the Past: Edward Gaylor

Arguments about compulsory vaccination are not new. In 19th century Belper opinions were strong about the rights and wrongs of vaccinating children against smallpox and one name which continually popped up in the Belper News and Derby Mercury is Dr Edward Gaylor. Born in Morden, Cambridgeshire in 1832, he moved to Belper as a young man, married Elizabeth Johnson of Little Eaton in 1856 and studied medicine in Edinburgh and Glasgow before setting up a medical practice here. The couple lived on King Street and Bridge Street before moving to The Limes on Chapel Street. Two children were born, Norman and Gertrude. Later he was appointed Medical Officer to Belper, Alfreton and Ripley District Councils and in this position he was not shy of controversy. Smallpox was greatly feared and it was compulsory to vaccinate children. Anyone who refused to present their child would incur a fine and many objections were made to this law. In a medical publication, “Compulsory Vaccination: Defensive and Explanatory”. Dr Gaylor claimed that statistics showed that vaccination worked. To the Belper News in July 1899 he wrote: “the death rate of the unvaccinated is 57.1% compared with 9.5% of those vaccinated. It shows the thoroughness with which the vaccination law is put into effect.” In another letter to the paper he supported measures being considered in Maryland which forced those working with fresh food to accept vaccination or lose their jobs. “Can we in England have more forcible illustration of epidemic and its treatment, than this method adopted by our shrewd, sensible cousins?” He was also worried about measles, also much feared in the nineteenth century. As District Medical Officer, in a precursor of modern lockdown, he asked local churches in Crich to close their Sunday Schools to prevent infections. Non-Conformist Chapels agreed, but the Vicar of Crich refused, to

the dismay of the District Council, which realised that this would only prolong the outbreak. Doctor Gaylor attended many inquests and trials, but not all stories about him are positive. He annoyed Florence Nightingale over an outbreak of typhoid in Holloway when she complained that he had taken a sample of water from a village pump, then forgotten about it. His assistant threw it out because he said it stank and the doctor then announced that the water was unfit for human consumption. This caused consternation in the village and an indignant Florence Nightingale called for a proper scientific analysis of the water. Gaylor’s personal life was tragic. His daughter died at 14 and his son, who was also a doctor, died at 23. His wife Elizabeth died in 1885 and on her grave is inscribed “With God and my children”. His own death in 1906 led to one final demonstration of his belief in modern The Gaylor Family Vault in Belper methods. He was the Cemetary, now overgrown with Ivy and overshadowed by trees. first Belper person to be cremated, leaving instructions that his body should be cremated in Manchester before his ashes were interred in the family vault. Of his bequests, his will stated “no part be expended in outward signs of mourning, as he did not believe in its reality or efficacy.” He was a man of principle and not afraid to speak his mind. Like others I have discovered in the cemetery, I would have liked to have met him. By Viv Scott

Could Someone You Know Make a Difference? Whether it’s a career for life or a few hours a week volunteering with the local community, there are opportunities for everyone to make a difference with Derbyshire Constabulary.

We will be recruiting police officers throughout 2022 and there are lots of different ways to join. From people leaving school or university, people who would like to ‘earn while they learn’ or people joining from another career, there’s an option to suit everyone. It’s a job like no other – whether you’re protecting the vulnerable, saving lives or simply making the community where you work feel safe. It’s exciting, demanding and vitally important work. There are also a variety of staff roles, meaning someone you know could be tackling the problems

which matter to the people of Amber Valley or being there at the end of the phone in their time of need. And for those who only have a few hours to spare, our Special Constabulary gives people the chance to do something rewarding alongside their busy lives. Police Constable Wendy Wright, from Belper’s Safer Neighbourhood team, said: “I have been a beat officer in Belper for two and a half years, after being a traffic cop before that. It’s a pleasure to serve the community in Amber Valley. I find it’s such rewarding work helping vulnerable victims, dealing with their problems and helping them in small ways to make their lives better.” “If anyone is interested in helping the local community and helping them change their lives for the better, I would highly recommend a career in the police service.” Anyone who wants to find out more about any of these opportunities can visit careers.derbyshire.police.uk.

Thomas Ryde & Son Funeral Directors The name Thomas Ryde is well-established in Belper – the independent family funeral directors dates back to the 1800s, and today its roots are still firmly set in the local community. Current Funeral Director Mark Godfrey is a Belper man himself, and feels privileged to help and support the people of his home town. Mark is assisted by Michelle Vickers and together they are proud to offer a very personal level of service. “You entrust your loved ones into our care, and we do all we can to look after them – and you – through every step.” Offering everything from the traditional to the unique, or simple direct cremations to flamboyant funerals, the most important thing is that your loved one’s send-off is fitting and appropriate. From glittery coffins to horse drawn hearses, VW campervans, bespoke floral tributes, or their own fleet of 6 Jaguar limousines to match their gunmetal grey hearse, there are many ways to say goodbye. “The simple things can make a big difference and we’ll adapt details in any way that you like – such as changing the colour of our ties from traditional black to bright pink – if that’s what your loved one would have wanted! We are here with you every step of the way to offer comfort and support,

and guide you through the decisions as we take care of the arrangements.” Working in partnership with Golden Charter, they can offer pre-paid funeral plans so that the finances are taken care of or, through ‘Funeral Wishes’ they can offer a ‘plan’ with no financial commitment – your wishes will be held on file so that you know you’ll receive the funeral you want. They also offer a range of memorialisations including memory pins, finger print jewellery or ashes to glass. “Over and above the service that we provide, we go even further to support the community – sponsoring a junior football team, raising money for local charity ‘Special Friends’ and holding an annual Christmas carol and memorial event at the Lion Hotel. We’re much more than just a local business – we’re proud to be an important part of the community that we serve.” Thomas Ryde & Son Independent Funeral Directors is located at 35 Bridge Street, Belper DE56 1AY. Bereavement Matters It gets harder and harder to do the maths with each passing year but at the last count we reckon that there is more than 80 years’ worth of qualified and professional funeral experience within our office here in Heanor. That comprises roughly my own 30 years as a qualified funeral director, as well as more than 20 years’ experience as a qualified embalmer, my colleague Helen Ellis’s 20+ years as a qualified funeral director and our funeral arranger Amanda Outram’s own 4 years as a funeral arranger and administrator. This is something we’re very proud of, and professional qualifications are something we believe in as a company even though – incredibly, to my mind – you don’t actually need a professional qualification to be a funeral director. I say this because I can’t think of many roles that deal with members of the public at a time when they are at their most vulnerable. Every day we have people visiting us whose worlds have been turned upside down, who struggle to see through the tears and have difficulty taking in the information they need to make decisions.

These are people who have lost loved ones to an illness, or to a tragic accident, suddenly and often unexpectedly and are trying to come to terms with what has happened to them. In those situations they need the help of trained professionals who can tell them all they need to know: people who have earned the qualifications that prove they have been trained in dealing with the complexities of registering a death, arranging for the care of the deceased and putting together everything necessary for a fitting send-off. And, at the same time, are a sign that they are able to demonstrate the calmness, care and respect that they deserve. This is why at Gillotts we insist, wherever possible, on our staff having role specific qualifications, because if you care about your work – and care about those you work for – why would you not?
