LIKELY CANDIDATES FOR EXTERNAL MENTOR
1. Name: Lloyd Jackson Email: lloyd.jackson@puregym.com Contact: 0773 876 5987 An interesting person I have considered being an external mentor, asides from Interior Designers, is the manager of Pure Gym in Stockport, Lloyd Jackson. I interviewed Lloyd for my Advanced Research Module where I was compiling relevant research for my fitness centre concept. Lloyd has been in the fitness industry for over 17 years, his knowledge and expertise would prove greatly valuable in order for my design concept to be a success as he has experience with numerous fitness centres across the North West of England. 2. Name: SHHArchitects Email: info@shh.co.uk Contact: 0208 600 4171 SHH Architects has designed two large-scale health and fitness facilities for the 37° brand based in London. The bold colours and unusual material choice used by this company correlates with my own design preferences . The company was originally established 21 years ago and currently employs an international team of 50+ people. SHH Architects have also had 75+ creative award wins and nominations across three continents. Their prowess within the design industry along with their experience of designing a fitness centre could potentially be useful for my own gym design. 3. Name: NoChintz Email: info@nochintz.co.uk Contact: 0161 236 1412 Whilst researching existing fitness centres for my Advanced Research Module, I came across two particular gyms, unique in their design, I found myself immediately fascinated by their approach and both of which are located in Manchester called Train, and QDos. I discovered that these gyms were designed by the company NoChintz that are based in the Northern Quarter in the city centre of Manchester. NoChintz design with a creative, contemporary style and the two gymnasiums they created are quirky with a different vibe to the traditional gym in order to be more motivational. This is the exact approach I am looking to form whilst designing my fitness centre, so as you can imagine, this company is incredibly inspirational to me. 4. Name: StudioSofield Email: contact@studiosofield.com Contact: 212 473 1300 Studio Sofield is a company based in New York. I became very intrigued by their work when I came across a beautifully designed fitness centre called David Barton Gym that is designed by this company. They incorporate a club-like vibe in to the gym with live DJ’s as the music to engage the customers to their fitness regime by making the environment have a motivational atmosphere. I feel Studio Sofield’s creative design flair in the interior design industry would greatly influence my own fitness concept. 5. Name: ZYNK Email: enquiries@zynkdesign.com Contact: 0207 193 1430 ZYNK Interior Architects & Designers is a company based in London who have designed many innovative health and fitness centres across the UK. ‘Our designs reflect not only our creativity but also our in depth operational knowledge of this market’ - quote taken from ZYNK’s website about their health and fitness work. Due to their sheer scale of work they have produced within the industry for numerous different brands, I think this company could provide me with useful information for my Final Major Project design.

Dear‌ I am a third year student studying Interior Design at Salford University, and I am just about to commence with my Final Major Project (FMP). This module is a representation of the amount I have learnt in the past three years of my creative practice. In total I have completed 14 individual design projects, 1 design practice placement, and a number of written work regarding critical issues in design. These projects have all been prepping me for this final climax module. The question I am basing my FMP on is; How can we adapt current training spaces to something more motivating for both adults and children to improve their health and fitness? This question has been composed from the extensive research I have recently compelled based on the vast amount of social issues there are regarding health and fitness that need addressing.
07909442007 Your professional expertise in this area is extremely inspiring to myself and kjackson.jk@gmail.com katejackson.wix.com/kjdesigns your approach to designing contemporary fitness centres with a twist is so fascinating. The knowledge you have within the field would be incredibly useful to adapt to my own design, and so I would be greatly appreciative if you could collaborate with me and act as my external mentor for my FMP. The basis of this collaboration would be to schedule interim meetings with myself where I can present the progress of my project and receive professional views on how I can develop my concept in to making it a more in-depth, realistic design. This collaboration would greatly benefit myself and hopefully prove to be an enjoyable and interesting experience for yourself. It would allow me to gain vital experience in collaborating with a creative design professional which is crucial for my future design practice. I understand that you may be extremely busy with your own projects, so therefore I would be genuinely grateful for any input you have to offer in my FMP. The meetings would be scheduled at your convenience, and these could be either be in person, or in the form of a video call, or even an email. To conclude the collaboration, I would ultimately wish that you accept an invitation to attend the assessment presentation and also the end-of-year degree show in which my FMP would be exhibited later this year at Media City, Salford. Attached is a copy of the design brief and project plan for my FMP, along with a link to my personal website which will display my project as it unfolds. I would like to say many thanks for your time in reviewing this request and I very much hope to hear from you soon regarding being my external mentor. Yours Sincerely, Kate Jackson

DESIGN BRIEF OUTLINE THE CONCEPT... The brief outlines a proposed fitness centre in which both adults and children can go to take part in physical activity. The concept is to encourage and motivate everyday people to make a conscientious decision in allowing them to become more active by engaging in a lively, exciting environment. There will be a specified area of the fitness centre that accommodates both adults and children allowing them to train in the same environment so families can come and exercise together, have fun and bond as a family. The primary advantage to this is that children are encouraged to become more physically active by incorporating games and activities in to their lives with the main focus of being fun rather than work. There will be a separate area of the fitness centre designated for adults only which will offer alternative methods of training that differ from the traditional methods to make exercising more exciting rather than being seen as ‘boring’. This will involve various pieces of functional training equipment that is designed to prepare and improve on movements that correlate to the day to day lives of the general population. This ground breaking and innovative fitness centre will be based in Manchester City Centre within a construction known as ‘The Hive’. A new modern building which promotes its green credential, an aspect that correlates with the design requirements. The location has been ultimately chosen due to the amount of space that is available, the rooftop outdoor area included, and also because of the sustainable qualities that building has. The successful design will be an exciting place for all ages to do physical activity whilst enjoying themselves. It should be visually appealing, encouraging, and inspirational to all different types of people. To appeal to every possible market, the gym needs to be affordable. Sustainability is a must within the fitness centre. THE VISION... The vision is to create a communal space that attracts a wide variety of people from various sociological backgrounds resulting in different ages and cultures interacting and motivating each other whilst improving their health and fitness. The design will create an exciting space for adults and children, giving them the option of training together or individually. This will provide an opportunity for families to exercise together setting an example as to how the nation can become more physically active. There will be a mix of state-of-the-art equipment along with back-to-basics equipment that will provide an enjoyable and diverse workout environment. High quality design details will be used to enhance The Hive’s building elements and positively engage peoples’ attention by motivating them to exercise. The design will improve the lively atmosphere currently at The Hive and it will compliment their creative community.
