Manchester Communication Academy Subject: BTEC First in Sport Exam Board: Pearson Edexcel Written Exam: One Unit is sat as an External Exam. The exam lasts for 1 hour and examines Unit 1. The questions are presented in various forms of multiple choice, short answers and then finishing with one final 8 mark extended writing question. There are 50 marks available. Students are required to achieve the following marks: Level 1 Pass – 17, Level 2 Pass – 26, Level 2 Merit PracticalThe remaining 3 units are a combination of Practical and Controlled Assessment work. Unit 2 – Practical Performance – Students will look at the rules, regulations and scoring systems of 2 practical sports and demonstrate their knowledge of this in a written and practical application, following this students will complete an observation checklist to highlight their strengths and areas for improvement within their two practical sport. Unit 5 – Fitness – Students will design a 6 week training programme and look to improve their fitness over 6 weeks through their application but also looking at benefits and barriers towards participation. Throughout the 6 weeks students will be required to keep a diary of their progress and experiences. Following this students will complete a review of their programme. Unit 6 – Leadership – Students will identify the qualities of a Sports Leaders and look into those who they consider a role model. Students will look to model their qualities by teaching their own peers in a skill of their choice. Following this students will complete a review of the teaching experience and planning. Our Support Package Students are invited to catch up on a weekly basis on a Tuesday Evening. Miss Gerrie is also offering Monday evening as a drop in session if students require any extra support with their work. Within lessons students are grouped according to their requirements and their abilities. Where required students are in small groups or have TA support. When close to exam periods, students are given evening revision sessions to assist with their revision in the run up to their exam as extra support. What students should be doing at home? Students are completing all of their work on online Academy sites. Students are able to access these at home and make improvements to their work. Students are required to advise their teachers of this in order to ensure marking is up to date. In preparation for the exam students have been given a revision booklet in order to help prepare for the exam. Students should look to create revision notes/ cards from this. Past papers are available within lessons. Revision schedule: Students should be revising one topic per night in the run up to their exam in order to keep all topics fresh. Students should look to make revision cards to highlight the main points but be able to expand and give practical examples. How parents can support their child: Students should ask their parents to test them in preparation for their exam. Parents should look to encourage students to attend revision/support sessions and work to their best ability to achieve the highest grade possible.
