Manchester Communication Primary Academy opens its doors to reception children in September 2014, with a new building, complete with a 52 place nursery, opening in September 2015. The Academy is a new, mixed, non-selective school with no religious affiliations, serving local children of all abilities. Our lead sponsor at the Primary Academy is BT, who have a long and successful record of involvement in education and is the sponsor of Manchester Communication Secondary Academy. We believe passionately in the power of an excellent education to transform lives. At Manchester Communication Primary Academy we will ensure that each child is provided with the best possible start to their learning journey to develop their interests and become confident, independent learners who care about themselves and others. We have the exciting opportunity to establish a challenging education within a supportive and caring environment. We will operate a stage not age approach which will encourage all children to make rapid progress; with an emphasis on numeracy, literacy and communication. We will have high child to staff ratios which will enable children to receive the support and challenge that they need. We will also focus on enabling children to apply what they have learned, encouraging independence, team work and questioning. Our children will learn with specialist teachers in a variety of curriculum areas, including: science, sport, technology, music, languages, food and drama. They will also be able to access specialist facilities which will be available at, MCA Secondary Academy, including state of the art technology facilities, science labs and a 4D room. In terms of personal development; we will work with families to ensure, that together we nurture our children to become positive, confident young learners who contribute positively. We will have an emphasis on positive behaviour for life and learning which will underpin our ethos. We work on the principle that every child can be successful. We believe that all of these things will enable our children to thrive and surpass expectations. The proof of our success will be in the quality of the daily experience we provide for our children. We have the highest expectations in terms of teaching, learning and the standards our young learners achieve.

BT is proud to be lead sponsor for Manchester Communication Primary Academy, helping to create a new local school that will provide children with a supportive, challenging, and unique learning environment. We are in a position to build on the success of our sponsorship of Manchester Communication Academy. We are looking forward to using our knowledge and real world experience to bring the Academy’s specialism of communication to life and support children to develop their communication skills. Communication is an important skill and we will help all our children learn about speaking and listening, languages and drama, and digital communication. Looking ahead, part of BT’s commitment is to help young people improve their employment opportunities, and we will provide opportunities to learn from industry experts. We will be delighted to welcome local children to the Primary School and to work in partnership with them and their parents to provide the best possible education - BT.

These are the core values that will underpin all of our day to day work and they will be demonstrated in all aspects of Academy.

Manchester Communication Primary Academy will be a centre for excellence in its communication specialism and for teaching and learning. It will provide the best start for your child’s education. Children will benefit from our nurturing environment on a daily basis.

We believe that all children should have a fair and equal access to learning. We will provide all the equipment that your child needs to access learning; including free educational trips. Special Educational Needs Manchester Communication Primary Academy will provide a range of interventions to support children with particular learning needs. We will follow the statutory code of practice in identifying, assessing and supporting pupils with special educational needs. Through individual education plans we will provide support which is tailored to cater for each pupil's’s unique situation. Support may be given in class, in a small group or through withdrawal groups and will be delivered by a skilled team of teachers, teaching assistants and specialist behavioural support workers. If we believe that your child needs to be assessed by an Educational Psychologist, we will work with you to ensure that your child is supported and then provided with the learning, social or medical intervention they require. English as an Additional Language Supporting EAL is an Academy specialism; we will provide well matched extra support for pupils with additional language needs. Our emphasis on language acquisition via a combination of induction sessions and intensive EAL one-to- one/ small group teaching will ensure that children receive extra support until they reach the expected levels in English.

We will celebrate diversity, encourage first language development and enable children to gain qualifications in their first language. Supporting EAL parents - We will produce communication in a simple format, emphasizing key information and provide translation, wherever possible. Parents are invited to family and adult ESL sessions as part of MCA’S community offer. Behaviour For Life The Manchester Communication Primary Academy will be a calm and orderly environment where children are well mannered and show the highest respect for each other and their community. We will build a culture of high expectations and high achievement, which will require hard work and resilience from all. We believe that it is important to teach good manners, respect for others and social responsibility. The Academy has a very clear code of conduct and expects the highest standards of behaviour from all pupils, both within the Academy and in the wider community. We have three simple school rules that we expect children and their parents to support: EYFS Take part and try hard Think about others Listen then do

Year 1 - 4 Learn well

Years 5 - 6 Put your learning before everything else Look after your Academy and everybody in it Follow instructions from the MCPA staff team

Specific programmes will help children develop strategies for maintaining excellent behaviour and well- motivated approaches to learning. We are a non-shouting school and will always deal with incidents in a positive, rationale way, involving, parents with both sanctions and rewards. Good attendance is essential to success at school and all pupils are expected to have an excellent attendance record and be punctual. If your child becomes ill at school they will be referred to the school nurse who will decide whether they are fit to stay in school or need medical attention. Sex and Relationships Education The Academy incorporates aspects of personal relationships education, which is provided for all children in a planned programme. It is delivered sensitively as part of the science scheme relating to the human body and is firmly based on the ethos of the school, which emphasises the importance of personal relationships and recognizes the value of family life. During Years 5 & 6 children will study the ways their bodies change during adolescence and more in depth work will be covered on aspects of sex and relationships education. Parents are given information beforehand and their permission is sought before this part of the curriculum is taught. Parents have the right to withdraw their child from specific lessons related to sex education and should do so by sending a letter to the Principal.

The Academy day will start at 8.50am and finish at 3.15pm with additional sessions planned for KS1 and KS2 until 4:30 pm from Monday to Thursday. We will have a free breakfast club available for our learners and we will provide a pre -school and after school club for parents who require this facility. We will operate a June – May academic year, to ensure that learning is continuous and to ensure a smooth transition to the next class/ phase. So for example, after KS1 assessments pupils will progress to KS2, Year 3. An Example School Day Timings
