On June 28 , just over 30 runners runners aged 7-71 took part in our debut fun run event held at Queens Park (described as “the most underused park in Manchester”). A number of MCA students marshalled the event with one student participating. There were two courses available, a shorter 1km for families and a 3k race for the more able participant. Despite the torrential rain, it was a huge success, as £280.00 was raised for the Brainhouse Academy.

On October 13 MCA hosted the second night of the Hand Made Film Festival with a trip down memory lane and a screening of ‘Angels with Manky Faces’. Over 100 Members of the Once Upon A Time group enjoyed the matinee performance with over 140 community members and press enjoying the 7pm showing. The school corridors were transformed into a terraced street with historical excerpts of radio being broadcast.
Piccadilly Symphony Orchestra On Saturday 22 February MCA hosted the inaugural performance of the Piccadilly Symphony Orchestra. Over 200 people packed the sports hall to watch the 75 piece orchestra perform music by Bernstein, Shostakovich and Gershwin. The event was a huge success with over £300 raised for The Brainhouse Academy. The conducter, Tom Newall and orchestra leader, Tom Rowan Young mingled with the audience at the interval, answering questions and chatting with attendees. The evening was extremely well received. One guest described the performance as “Wonderful, absolutely wonderful,” another said “I can’t believe how lucky we are to have experienced such talented young people on our doorstep!”

Community Cinema The community cinema has been used on four occasions throughout the year. During November and December MCA showed ‘Some Like It Hot’ and the festive movie ‘It’s A Wonderful Life’. 30 individuals attended the showings and further films have been requested with a Western due to be shown in the new Academic year. As part of the Whit Holiday Programme 120 children watched the modern Disney classic ‘Frozen’. It was an amazing opportunity to provide a packed auditorium at no cost to local families. Finally, Abraham Moss have hired the cinema for their Christmas party, hosting 140 children.
Throughout the year, the community team has hosted a number of events encouraging a combination of Once Upon A Time subscribers, adult learners, community club members, students and their families and also neighbours to attend MCA. Over 100 individuals have accessed our community restaurant. The restaurant evenings have been hosted by MCA Year 9 cookery students. These have included 2 curry nights and a Pie and Peas evening for the Hungarian families at the Academy. The curry nights have been a roaring success uniting the community through food and chat and enabling our students to excel in a restaurant setting. Entertainment was provided by three talented Year 7 students who sang.
Community Theatre MCA has hosted a number of community theatre events utilising community groups that use MCA as their base. RW Street Dance Street Dance School performed a Brainhouse Fundraiser in October which saw 80 dancers perform to over 100 local people raising £223 for The Brainhouse Academy. All of the dancers were from our local postcodes including 10 MCA students. MaD Theatre performed 2 productions through the year. ‘Bailiffs and Blind Dates’ was the year’s first MaD Theatre production, with four MCA students involved and over 80 people watched the hilarious festive comedy which raised just over £100 for The Brainhouse Academy.
