An Amazing Blue
O
n an early morning run a bird flew out quickly from the bank beside the road. Flying at an unusually low level, it startled me. The first time it happened I didn’t give it much thought but when it happened the next day at the same spot, I figured there must be a nest close by. The bank along the roadside is a little over seven feet tall and nearly vertical. Even though is fairly bare, there are patches of dried plants and sticks with a few green leaves breaking through here and there. The nest was hard to find. Attached to the steep bank, made of mud and twigs, with a lining of soft grasses, it held four tiny eggs of the most amazing shade of blue. I hadn’t gotten a good look at the mother bird that streaked past but seeing the eggs I was thinking “Robin’s egg blue” but I wasn’t sure. These eggs were not the soft faded shade of Robin’s egg blue that we know from the shell fragments often found on the ground this time of year. They were electric sapphire amazing! Situated on a narrow ledge just a little higher than eye level, this nest, with little protection from predators was a small treasure. I worried about its location and vulnerability predators. Knowing that there was nothing I could (or should) do to protect the eggs I did decide to take a photo each day. I had no idea when the eggs had been laid and was surprised when two days after my discovery I found two tiny, pink chicks, mouths wide open, tiny heads wobbling, as they chirped and awaited food from mother. I could see them change and grow each day. It didn’t take long for their tiny white feathers to appear, followed by ones more suited for flight. As they grew, rather than chirping they remained quiet and still as I peeked in on them. Fifteen days after my discovery they had grown strong enough to fly and they were gone. I’ll always remember that shade of blue.

SINGER-SONGWRITERS Songwriting and singing can be traced back through civilizations around the world. A vehicle for story telling, as much as entertainment, singer-songwriters can capture an incident, an era, a sentiment. Alleghany, Ashe, and Grayson Counties share a rich heritage of singer-songwriters that have told stories of hardships, taught lessons, and celebrated life here. Many songs, written long ago, still ring true today. Historic songs and tunes from the Carter Family, Doc Watson, Ola Belle Reed, among many others, are played along with new and original compositions at performances and jam sessions. I’d like to introduce you to three talented and passionate singersongwriters: Aubreana Lovell from Ashe County, Nolan Biggins from Alleghany County, and Joyce Rouse from Grayson County. Each of them have their own style and a love of music and storytelling.
Aubreana Lovell A
t the 2018 Wayne Henderson Music Festival and Guitar competition, near the end of the festival when Wayne Henderson invites special guests to join him on stage, a wonderfully rich voice rang forth with The Storms are on the Ocean, an old Carter Family song. The singer was Aubreana Lovell of Ashe County. Aubreana, a 14 year old singer songwriter, began singing at age four, started playing the piano and guitar when she was eight. The only one of 3 daughters in her family that plays music, her love of music was inspired by her grandfather who played in bluegrass and country bands. She accompanied him to many of his gigs to sing. These days he accompanies her. “I like to play good music,” she says when asked what genre of music she prefers. “I play a lot of country but I like to play whatever feels good.” An avid songwriter Aubreana has written around 15 songs she feels are complete but has many others including songs she would tell her grandma to write for her before she could even read. Her original songs are a mix of topics – inspiring and uplifting – that share her thoughts and feelings. “I try to write songs about things not written about before.” says Aubreana. “I’d like my songwriting to connect with people, to touch their life.”

Along with writing songs on her own, Aubreana has attended several songwriting workshops: the Ola Belle Reed Songwriting Retreat in Ashe County twice, and the Backwoods Beat Music Festival in Alleghany County where she won her age group songwriting competition. She has also attended Steve Seskin’s songwriting retreat in Nashville. “I really enjoy songwriting workshops, they are a great way to learn from others.” says

Miss Lovell. “I can go with the beginning of a song in my mind and end up taking a completely different direction by the time I’m done.” A few of my favorite songs I’ve written are: “Dear Mom”, “Stand”, “Porch Lights”, “That Night” and “What Would Jesus Do?” When Aubreana sets her songwriting aside, she enjoys singing in her church choir, volunteering in her community,
playing soccer for her school team, skiing, and being outdoors – “loving every day”. Aubreana’s music can be found online at all major music outlets like Apple and Amazon Music, Youtube, along with Facebook and Instagram @aubreanalovellmusic. Her EP (Extended Play) can be found in a variety of shops in downtown West Jefferson.

Nolan Biggins S
aying that Nolan Biggins is passionate about music is an understatement. He loves to talk music – past and present.
Living in California until he was eleven, Nolan moved moved to Alleghany County with his father. Having family here cousins and an uncle – made it easy to make Alleghany County home. He has ventured away but, so far, always come back. Learning to play the guitar, song structure, and writing lyrics for fun, he played in his first band at age 14. By age 16, he had begun writing “songs” he would actually call songs. Influenced by artists like Jackson Brown, Tom Petty, Fleetwood Mac and The Eagles, Nolan’s love for the classic rock tunes of the 1980’s is reflected in the rhythms and lyrics of his original tunes. “I like writing songs that are easily understood. I usually start with a chorus and then build the verses around it. It can take 5 minutes, 2 years, or even 10 years to finish a song and even then they can evolve,” says Biggins. Nolan feels that writing his own songs has been a natural evolution for him with his involvement in music. In 2017 he won

It’s speaking to the universe,” says Nolan. “It can take you back to a

oyce Johnson Rouse is a singer-songwriter, educator, and environmental activist. As “Earth Mama”, Rouse shares her passions through music in high-energy, high-content and entertaining performances that connect with audiences of all demographics. Rouse is the composer of numerous published, recorded songs and commissioned works. A producer of 13 recorded CD projects used around the world for ecology, peace, and justice education, Joyce is a published author in educational literature, using arts/balanced brain learning to enhance critical thinking and problem solving. Living in Independence, Virginia, for more than 24 years (currently and in the late 1980’s), She grew up in rural Iowa. For 16 years Rouse lived in Nashville, Tennessee, drawn there to study songwriting and work in the recording industry. A 20-year voting member of the Grammy Awards, she has more than 140 recordings bearing her writer credits. “Working alongside Bryan Sutton, Trisha Yearwood, Catherine and Kerry Marx, Dale Ann Bradley and others, seeing their work ethic, dedication, and precision is both humbling and inspiring.” says Rouse. Maureen McGovern, Marie Osmond, Jana Stanfield, Ireland’s Drumalis Choir and others as well as other pop and country music artists have recorded Rouse’s songs. Some of her work has been featured in movies and used as theme songs for local, regional, and national events. Her original music has been used extensively by educators and peace organizations such as the United Nations Food and Agriculture Organization, The Smithsonian Institution, UNESCO, and International Earth Charter in educational projects. A true highlight of Rouse’s music career includes writing and recording “Standing on the

Shoulders,” a song that became the official theme song of the 75th anniversary of the Nineteenth Amendment to the United States Constitution in 1995. The song has been featured at many official events in Washington, D.C. and is featured in a historical volume of significant songs for winning and maintaining the vote for women in the US, scheduled for publication in 2020. In 2008, Rouse wrote and recorded Virginia Beauty, a Love Song for the Commonwealth, an anthem that has been circulated widely as a notable song for promoting Virginia history, geography, and tourism. Rouse notes that she is currently working with a school in the Tidewater area on a new arrangement for middle school singers. “My 11th Earth Mama CD, 'A Sense of Place,' was recently released; 'HerStory', my 12th CD, has also been recently released—just in time for Women’s History Month” said Rouse. “With the 2020 Women’s Suffrage Centennial celebration, events in all 50 states are being planned along with a national celebration. I’m grateful that Standing on the Shoulders is again being played and sung at many ceremonies, including the unveiling of a new Suffrage Monument in Memphis, this summer, and a special performance by the Seattle Women’s Chorus to kick off the 2020 celebration." She adds, "other songs written with some favorite co-writers from my Nashville days add a little punch of pop and rock to tunes like Women Rock the World and the title song, HerStory." "Several new music videos of these songs, ideal for the young GIRL POWER movement are in process, as well as the eco music videos we continue to add to the Earth Mama YouTube channel. Teachers have been wonderful about creating teaching videos of the songs (with permission) then allowing my team to post them to our channel, of course with a shoutout to their school!”

Live Earth Mama performances can be seen regularly in a variety of commnity venues, including libraries, grade schools, universities, churches, retreat centers, conferences, museums, and festivals. As Earth Mama, Rouse also participates in workshops and seminars, with a focus on working with youth to plant the seeds of “earth wisdom” in the next generation.
A spiritually oriented educator, Rouse has worked with many faith communities as they explore their deep concern for earth and/or new understandings of our cosmological context. Rouse says she and her husband are very happy to be again living in Grayson County where they are involved in a variety of community organizations. “It gets harder to hit the road for music and teaching events when the garden is planted and sweet cool breezes are blowing here in the highlands” she adds. “But I love creating new music for changing times and reaching hearts of all ages with tunes for a healthy Earth and a just future.” “Protecting water, soil, air and food for future generations is perhaps the most important contribution I can make in my lifetime,” says Rouse, “and as part of our commitment to ‘live what we preach,’ my husband and I have built an eco-efficient home where we generate sixty percent of our power with wind and solar energy. Booksharing Here! Started in 2009 Little Free Libraries are found and loved nationwide and around the world. This year the Little Free Library program celebrates its 10th year and we are so fortunate to have these wonderful boxes of books that hold adventures and inspire ideas Here!
Built on the premise of take-a-book, leave-a-book, Little Free Libraries are boxes that hold from 40 to50 books – depending on the size of the book. They can be found throughout Ashe and Alleghany Counties in a variety of shapes and sizes. Creativity in their construction and appearance makes each of them unique and fun. Little Free Libraries appeared in Alleghany county in 2015/2016 with the initiative and help of Shippy McDowell and the Alleghany County Public Library.

An avid reader and bibliophile, Ms. McDowell had seen one in place while visiting family in Oregon and loved the idea. Around that same time, the Alleghany County Public Library and received funding from the Blue Ridge Read, an initiative of the Alleghany Arts Council that encourages reading and community-oriented conversations (alleghanyartscouncil.org), for a proposed project – Little Free Libraries for Alleghany. Ms. McDowell sponsored the construction and installation of five Little Free Libraries. The Alleghany County Library found volunteers to build five more. For the first year and a half or so, the mainstay of books in the LFLs were provided by Ms. McDowell and the Library. Now the inventory of books is mostly self-sustaining with occasional supplementation from Ms. McDowell and the library

“There was a time when we had a bookmobile that visited our communities,” says Debbie Brewer, Librarian of Alleghany County Public Library. “These Little Free Libraries provide access to books to communities and people that might not get to the County Library as often as they’d like.” “In Ashe County,” says librarian, Suzanne Moore, “Our library doesn’t have branches so with a play on words, we call our Little Free Libraries ‘Twigs’.” With community support and funding from a grant awarded by Ashe Community Foundation in 2013, the “TWIG” program began. Supported by the Ashe County Library and volunteers, seven Little Free Libraries can be found in rural locations around the county. The first Little Free Libraries were built and donated by the Ashe/Alleghany Home Builders Association. Each one is unique and carries a story of its creation. One has carefully selected and placed “twig” siding, another is decorated with a colorful mosaic. Another “Twig”, located at the Fleetwood Post Office is built from old bleacher boards that were rescued when the Beaver Creek High School was torn down. Several Library volunteers, known as “Guardians of the Twig”, look after and replenish the Little Free Libraries each month with books and the county library calendar. The selection of books vary and usually hold something for everyone. People who want to share their favorite books can easily find the Twig closest to them by locating its story

Glen said, “Thing is, birds have wings, which means they can show up in unexpected places…you never know.” Glen also said a lot of other things; and I was a very lucky guy to have Glen Eller as a mentor during my rejuvenated interest in birds. He retired to his home state of Tennessee several years ago, and along with that change, my best excuse to close the doors to my shop and head out with him to his birding hotspots left as well. We always had a ‘good birding’ day. Spring migration is all about the wood warblers for those hooked on birding. The deal is, they are now feathered out in their dating colors, meaning the males are spectacular. Given that in spring we have those easier visual identification clues, that the boys are singing their hearts out, and

that the leaves have yet to explode into shade size, we get the chance to actually see and hear them. These jewels of the avian world are a thing not to miss. But there is a small window. Most of these warblers are moving further north so are just passing through. That being said, many stick around in the Blue Ridge to breed, so we need to sort this out. As Glen said, “You ain’t gonna see them if you don’t look”. Wood warblers, family Parulidae, are small, thing billed gleaners of insects, mostly. Highly active, they flit from leaf to branch sideways and vertically, challenging the bird watcher with every move. But it’s worth it—trust me.

Timing is everything. Some warblers actually winter in or near our area, especially the “Myrtle” race of the Black Throated Warbler
yellow-rumped, (or ‘butter-butts’ as Glen called them), which can be seen throughout the year. Those species that do breed in these counties covered by Here!, will be moving as well, sometimes seeking higher elevations after winter’s worst. Though many warblers are neo-tropic migrants, meaning that their winters are spent south of our borders, some hang out along the southern coastal areas from North Carolina to Louisiana and Texas, and will be heading north earlier than the border hoppers. A return to Mahogany Rock overlook at milepost 235, south of Sparta, from midApril to early May is a great place to find warblers in migration (along with other neotropic passerines). An advantage of this spot is that many birds can be seen at eye American Redstart

level. Another advantage is the real possibility that you will run into seasoned birders that can assist in identification. Let’s begin with the species that are known to breed in our Blue Ridge region. A trip to Grayson Highlands State Park, Whitetop Mountain, Elk Garden (just below Whitetop), and Grindstone Campground (6.1 miles from Troutdale, VA on route 603), are excellent places to look for warblers such as chestnut-sided, black-throated blue, Canada, black-throated green, Magnolia and yellow-rumped warblers. I have had the good luck to see Blackburnian warblers in the summer months, a stunning bird. Along the New River and other lower lying stream side habitats, you can find yellow warbler, Louisiana and Northern waterthrushes, and common yellow-throat. Other possibilities include, prairie, pine, bluewinged and golden-winged (both quite difficult to find, preferring abandoned farm land), Northern parula, yellow-throated, American redstart, hooded, worm-eating, ovenbird, Swainson’s, cerulean, Kentucky, and yellow-breasted chat.
In my yard, 7 miles west of Independence, VA, I have logged breeding parula, black-andwhite, redstart, ovenbird and hooded. Ovenbirds make a lot of noise, but unless it is early

Mourning Warbler spring, it will be difficult to find them. They nest on the ground in woodlands, and Nashville Warbler create a nest that looks very similar to the old bread ovens, just a lot smaller. Referring to the field guide, you will need to study habitats as well as field marks and song descriptions as these are all essential elements to finding and identifying these wonders of nature. Some, such as the Blackburnians, are upper level tree gleaners, while the Swainson’s warblers are skulkers of the understory in ma-
ture hardwood forests…for instance. Patience is key, and nothing replaces practice. The following is a list of those just passing through, but can be seen at various locations: Nashville, orange-crowned, Tennessee, Cape May, palm, blackpoll, bay-breasted, mourning, Connecticut, and Wilson’s. As you can see by now, there are quite a few species of wood warblers to sort through. Because of the similarities of our mountain ecology to that of the boreal forests of Canada, we have the good

Bay-Breasted Warbler fortune to share warbler habitat with our northern neighbors. A quick glance at the range maps in your field guide will reveal this phenomenon quite readily. But you will also note that nearly all of ‘our’ breeding warbler species also breed up north. After retirement and before his move to Tennessee, Glen and I would bird several times a week. He birded every day weather and health allowed, and he knew all of the good spots essential to finding certain species. In my first

Wilson Warbler attempt to see a Louisiana waterthrush, we pulled over at a wooded, swampy area, thick with challenging vegetation and muck. While I poked around in the mud, listening to the allusive waterthrush, never finding it, Glen stood up on the road, laughing at my efforts mercilessly. He had been there, done that. That same day he took me to a place he often saw Kentucky warblers and together we found one…the only I have ever seen. He was a fantastic guide and totally fun to spend time with. Mystic Forests of Three Top Mountain THREE TOP MOUNTAIN IS A 5,000-FOOT AMPHIBOLITE MOUNTAIN IN ASHE COUNTY. MUCH OF THREE TOP MOUNTAIN IS PRESERVED AND MAINTAINED BY THE NC WILDLIFE RESOURCES COMMISSION, WITH A COMMONLY-USED TRAILHEAD TO THE SUMMIT ON THE MOUNTAIN'S WESTERN SLOPE.

rominent among the rippling blue ridgelines of the southern Appalachians, Three Top Mountain’s sagacious slopes meet celestial High Country skies.
The trek up Three Top’s southern slope begins on a sharp uphill pitch. Beside deep ruts rainfall carved into a steep and seemingly abandoned gravel driveway, the faint trace of a trail emerges to the left, marked by hot pink blazes tied to low-hanging branches — a promise of passage, and hint that something worth seeing is revealed where those blazes stop, somewhere in the mountain’s thick forest. Up an eroded gravel driveway looms an unkempt home peering eerily through the trees. Not nearly as inviting as the prospect of an unexplored trail on a sunny spring day. Opposite where the pink-blazed trail begins, half of an old chimney sticks up from the ground, its stacked stones vi-

brant green, coated in fuzzy moss. The rest of the rocky chimney is heaped against the brown forest floor. The trail is not well-walked, but the pink markers are consistent enough to make stomping on fallen branches and hopping over a long-felled tree trunks feel like a contribution to this developing path — clearing the route for the next passerby. In the early weeks of spring, the ancient forests of Three Top Mountain are awakening. The bare bones of tree branches ready to sprout a coat of fresh leaves. Deeper into the forest, crystal waters trickle cheerfully through a little brook on the way down to Buffalo Creek. Trout Lily blooms sprout from the decaying leaves that cover the forest, fragile little yellow flowers wafting the scent of spring to slumbering bees.

The pink trail markers continue across the sparkling brook and out of sight, and the trail fades, becoming indistinguishable from the leafy ground. Where the beaten trail ends, the mountain climbs even steeper. Further uphill the pink blazes lead, their appearances become further and further apart, and the slick decaying leaves covering the forest floor make ascension a slippery endeavor. After clawing up and finding footing in a rocky clearing on Three Top’s midsection, the trusty pink blazes suddenly stop. The question begs: continue forward where others turned back, or press on and up in search of a mountaintop?

Some hundred yards yonder, four deer deftly navigate Three Top’s precipitous terrain on their daily trek through the forest, quickly bounding out of sight. One of Three Top Mountain’s wrinkled earthen fingers saunters down to where the last pink trail marker flits in a cool spring breeze — worth a try at climbing higher, with weather as fair as it is. A few strides past the last pink trail marker, the docile forest floor is overtaken by gnarled laurels. With no easy passage through the steep thicket of shrubby branches, it is no wonder the mountaineer who laid this trail stopped where he did. By Luke Weir, Freelance Mountaineer

Place trout over indirect heat and grill, turning once, until cooked through, about 20 to 40 minutes depending on the size of the fish and the temperature of the grill. The fish is done when it flakes easily with a fork. During the last few minutes of grilling, toss the lemon slices on the grill to warm and turn occasionally so they don’t scorch. Serve right away.
