Charami M. Constantopoulos E. Equal participation in all aspects

The city of Rio is situated in a strategic position in the map of Greece, always connecting the Peloponnese with central Greece. Until 2004, the travelers –Greek or foreign that arrived in the port of Patras- used the ferry boats to move and Rio used to be a convenient break for their trip. Nowadays after the construction of the bridge most of them bypass it. The fortress of Rio, that is the area of intervention of our thesis project, lies in a problematic spot between the two ports (that function depending on the wind), almost under the bridge. Taking into consideration the nearby University of Patras, we want to give an educational character in our proposal. The fortress is situated in the edge of the city and is exposed to the elements: wind, rain, storm, groundwater elevation‌ So, the energy sources, which we can use for the autonomy of the project and also the education of the visitor, are abundant. An open museum of sustainability is to be created, combined with a park in the yard of the fortress.

The construction of the fortresses of Rion and Antirrion started in 1499, during the Turkishvenetian war, when the sultan Bayezid II decided to exclude under siege Naupactus ruling the narrow passage nearby. The fortress of Rion was built in 3 different phases: (a) 14991687: ottoman fortification, (b) 1687-1828: Venetian extension, (c) 1828-today: interventions during WW2 (temporary military base and prison), during the construction of the bridge nearby, contemporary landscaping in the yard. Nowadays, big part of the walls is restored, while works continue to take place in the north side. It is possible to visit the site and also hosts uses, such as offices of the archaeological service, storage places, an exhibition space and the church of Zood贸chos Pig铆.

Arriving in the spot you leave your car/bike/moto... in the parking. There is a wall that doesn’t let you see what there lies in the other side. Still, there are some openings, a window, a passage under the ramp. Through the window you see an open space and it seems there will be a movie projection later this day; you see trees and of course the fortress. But you have to walk through the ramp to get there.

2

3

You get to the entrance; it’s a wooden construction “climbed” on the wall; it reminds you something of the old era; when the fortress really was a defense mechanism. Exactly! Like siege engines that try to reconquer the fortress!

You enter the first siege engine, and the rust lets you understand that there is water nearby. You learn through an info panel that there used to be a roman cistern in the spot, and now the rainwater is gathered/leached/stored and used for the irrigation.

12

Through an aerial bridge you can walk over the park towards the triple towers, as they are called. And on your left hand four glass “cubes”; these are the reading rooms of the library. You can’t wait to visit them! So maybe you can use the stairs of the towers or maybe through the next siege engine in order to exit the promenade and walk in the park level.

5

You can feel the wind blowing all over the area, but when you stood in the roof of the towers, and now that you are inside this siege engine it’s even more intense. You can hear the wind and you can see it: the shades that form the façade turn around freely and they also produce an amount of energy, enough to maintain the research lab and also illuminate the engine during the night.

6

You are reaching the northest part of the fortress and the view is amazing. It’s time for a coffee break, isn’t it? You can admire the bridge in contrast with the old walls and you can even see the Antirrion fortress, whose existence was always connected with the one you are in. What do you prefer? relax in this terrace or go inside the coffee place/ restaurant. Don’t worry about the sun! The shade panels can change depending on the season and the weather.

7

13

So, here you are in the engine of the sun! Photovoltaic panels in the shape of blinds reflect the sun during the day creating a dark space inside; during the night they open and the “tower is illuminated from the inside. You can see it from far away, just like a lighthouse! The stairs can lead you on top of the siege engine or in the beach outside the fortress!

8

After passing through the desalination engine you are almost there to the exit of the fortress. Or you can continue your walk in the park, and explore the fortress in a different way.

9

10

In case you choose to leave, you meet a public space where platforms towards the sea let you relax just above the water. And under the bridge a filter of columns separates the project from the rest of the coastline. And these columns turn into light during the night creating an almost magical landscape. There is already a plan for a waterfront promenade that will connect the open sustainability museum with the leisure uses of Rio.

Nowadays, within the urban space, the child seems often to be isolated inside the house. The changes made in the city’s form and size, render its environment hostile. But when the child goes out to the urban space, most of the times with the company of its parents, it prefers mostly unpredictable places. Even when it uses the ones created specifically for its play (squares, playgrounds...), the child tries to find out new ways, «better» and more amusing, to use the equipment provided. During the first years of its life, while it’s still trying to figure out and get used of its possibilities, the child plays with its mother in playgrounds or squares, and shows big interest to touch everything around it. As it grows up, though, group activities start to fascinate it. The child begins to discover and surpass its limits. It creates its own rules and games. Within the public realm, the child learns how to live in community. It makes its first friends and observes the adults surrounding it. It seems, and it is, extremely important that it has the possibility of this contact already since its first steps. That’s why social life would be essential to get transferred in the space in-between, in the streets that once were the heart of the city.

Course [kɔːs] n. A series of lessons, a route followed... The site of the intervention is the Strofyliá forest (19000ha), near the city of Patras (southern Greece), which is a unique ecosystem protected by NATURA 2000 among others. The main tree is the pine (pinus pinea) and the area hosts a big number of bird species in the lagoon nearby. It was requested to propose a small construction with the following characteristics: (a) minimum surface, (b) zero energy footprint, (c) biodegradable materials, (d) light temporary structure. Trying to achieve a better solution, our proposal is based on the idea of a repeated triangular unit, which generates many different versions when combined. Even though this system can be applied in a wide range of the area, we choose to create a specific number of structures along a specific route. Taking into account all the aspects of the site, we propose a centre for environmental education that consists of information, meeting and playing points and some lodgings. For the construction we use local natural materials, specifically reed and rope. On the triangular frame we apply three different types of overlay depending on the use: the lodging demands protection from the rain and privacy, so we create a dense layer of reed leaves; for the shading we use units with thin reeds that allow part of the sun to pass through; and when the unit serves as a floor, we choose a durable overlay made by thick reeds. The units described are based on the ground and suspended on the trees around when needed.

INFO

The site of intervention is an intermediary space, between the University campus and the city, which is characterized by the conflict of the natural elements of the landscape versus the infrastructure network of the city; the local stream versus the motorway. As the area is untapped except for the “Tofalos” sports centre, it is requested to research design strategies, conciliating the different situations, in order to form an “artificial nature” in the context of the creation of a sustainable park with a cinema complex. Through the mapping of the area and based on the already existing different textures of the ground, I create a polygonal system of design that simplified takes triangular shapes of surfaces. Changing the height and the angle of these surfaces I create different situations of space that permit different uses, having in mind the theory of Paul Virilio and Claude Parent about the “oblique“. Depending on the angle of the inclination one can lie down, sit, climb, play... L’oblique met l’homme en mouvement. And hidden under some of those surfaces is placed the cinema complex, a concert hall and a sports centre. The textures of the ground are intended to recreate the now existing vegetation, while some “squares” and the movement paths are covered by a more solid material that also lets vegetation to grow through.

Aiming an alternating urban landscape, we created moving structures used as scooter parking, which are lifted according to how full they are. As a result, these structures, which are observed from the level of the road, are constantly changing their height during the daytime. Additionally, all the facilities are placed underground, leaving free space for a square on the road level. The underground level is a second public space, including the reception, the repair and washing facilities and the classrooms. A central patio provides this space with ample light and fresh air. Therefore, the scooter riders use the ramp to enter the patio and park their scooter on the structures. The cyclists can park their bicycles on the south part of the square. Whoever approaches the square can spend some time under the trees sitting on the benches.

AC-CA Casablanca Sustainable Market Square

TYPE YEAR TEAM INFO PERSONAL CONTRIBUTION

International Architectural Competition 2012 Charami M. Polyzogopoulos K. Spyridonos G. http://www.ac-ca.org/en/home participation in all aspects

The merchants always used to gather in the caravanserais, to rest during commercial trips, while they also had the opportunity to exchange ideas and promote their merchandise in the courtyard, this special square. A place that seems to be equally social in the Arabic culture, is the mosque with its grandiose minaret that makes it visible from all the parts of the city. Based on those two forms, we create a public place where a perimetric promenade leads you to an observatory to the city. The market opens towards the internal square and permits the entrance in 3 parts of the plot. At the same time it’s a public passage, always open independently of the timetable of the market. Many of the products remain on the shelves forming a colorful façade to the street even after the closing of the market. The triangular shaped construction consists of repeated wooden frames, which permit the eye contact towards the interior. For the shading of the market blinds are used, with extra glass panels that when closed protect the exhibition shelves and transform them into the lighting source of the square and the boundary with the city. The water from the market and the rain, is led through channels to the square creating different spatial conditions during the day and the year, and end up watering the trees, that offer shade and create better microclimate. The square space permits the realization of events and cultural activities that everyone can watch from all the sides of the market.
