The bungee follows the strong structure of the plywood, however creates a flexible and softer element, to keep multiple gadgets safe. Made by the processes of lamination and CNC routing. Using the CNC to create groves and holes to house the bungee.
Fine art influence How fabric is manipulated and stretched in relation to other objects.
Textile detailing How textiles can be incorporated with a solid material.
QFC live project Rosea Rosea is designed for the evolving trend of open planned living. Varied shaped cushions can move to allow different levels of comfort and scenarios. Elastic details create further storage functions and take advantage of the open back.
The elastic on the back is pinned in places meaning smaller and bigger items can be stored, and items do not all fall out if one item is taken. The height of the sofa and where the elastic is placed means it can be accessed by everyone in the family. Three of the cushions are weighted not fixed, to be positioned to suit the user and situation.
Fabric detailing Using fabric to create functional details, or add storage using only fabric.
Form & colour Experimenting with shape and colour to achieve aesthetically beautiful yet functional design.
Umbra & John Lewis Soft Storage Youtube | Kate Scarlet designs Umbra & John Lewis Design Chanllenge 2017
Designed for rented living and the nomadic lifestyle, using felt for portability and leaving no damage. Using a simple and organised design to keep items accessible and neat. Also has adjustable straps for multi-function around the home.
It’s flexibility means Soft Storage can be rolled up and moved to another place within the home or when packing up and moving. The adjustable straps allow for multi-function, with either side able to be removed. An extra pair of straps means the removed half can still be used. These straps have grip backing to prevent slipping.
Requirements The clients supplied a colour scheme and requirements for inexpensive manufacture, packaging and specific target market.
Design trends Identifying upcoming and current design trends to design a product relevant for the target market.
Narrative & Ritual McCormack Youtube | Kate Scarlet designs McCormack (Narrative & Ritual Brief)
McCormack is a personal project, telling my own personal narrative of loss, creating an annual ritual remembering someone lost through sensory memories. Including a scented candle, moon object, engraved date and voice within a sensory video. All specific to my narrative.
My family of objects are developed from sensory memories which form the annual ritual. A permanent and temporary part, one melts away leaving the permanent half. The moon shaped void revealed is what is left behind, which I create something out of (a moon candle), a healing process. An engraved ash box houses the cast objects throughout the year, as a subtle memory of the person lost.
Materials Exploring materials which communicate my narrative and ritual. Considering the material properties and combining materials.
Negative space Using the concept of negative space to form a narrative. Casting within a negative space and using the negative space as part as the visual.
Up-cycling Project PULP PULP is collection of upcycled paper products which use a bold textile design to create on trend aesthetics to appeal to young adults. This collection is made up of more decorative small pieces for the home, perfect for young adults with small spaces.
Design & detailing Strong colours were combined to transform the paper pulp created, adding details such as embroidery to create stylish pieces.
Material & process I developed the material using glues within the pulp for strength and experimenting with colour during the making process. I experimented using a finish on the products for a more refined finish.
Photography Paris 2018 The trip to Paris explored the art and design within the city. Including a trip to the huge design fair Maison & Objet, conducting research on current and upcoming trends. I also took part in the opportunity to work with students at Strate design school.
