Biology

I chose GCU… James Burkitt ‘07 M.S. in Biology

Survey Technician, National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA)

Exponential growth in scientific knowledge over the last few decades continue to drive exciting discoveries in the lab and innovative advances in the marketplace. From the mapping of the human genome to the creation of biological cocktails to cleanup after environmental disasters, science—and biology in particular—has limitless potential

“On the NOAA research vessel Henry Bigelow, I’m using the knowledge and skills I learned about in classes at GCU every day. I work with researchers and government officials who are directly responsible for creating environmental policy and regulations on fisheries and doing cutting-edge science on topics ranging from ocean acidification to marine mammal protection. These are the same policies and regulations I studied while attending GCU.”

when it comes to improving the human experience. Faculty experts and graduate students in GCU’s Master of Science in Biology program understand and capitalize on that potential through their work in biotechnology, academic/medical research, secondary school biology teaching, or ecological/environmental research. “Georgian Court was exactly what I needed. A few years ago, I had a student-teacher from GCU in my classroom. I was so impressed with how prepared she was and how seriously she took her work. It wasn’t like having a student-teacher; it was more like having a team teacher. A lot of that has to do with the coursework and expectations at Georgian Court.”

Clinical Mental Health Counseling About one in four American adults suffers from a diagnosable mental disorder in a given year. And mental illness accounts for over 15 percent of the disease burden on health and productivity in the United States—more than the burden caused by all cancers. Yet most mental disorders are highly treatable, fueling the need for highly trained psychology professionals. Georgian Court University’s M.A. in Clinical Mental Health Counseling is intended for those who desire to provide counseling for people in challenging emotional situations. The M.A. in Clinical Mental Health Counseling is a 60-credit program that equips you with the tools to apply psychological and behavioral sciences to real-life situations, working through emotional, behavioral, and mental challenges to help others make healthy changes. You’ll be prepared to enter doctoral programs or to work in community mental health agencies, college counseling centers, government agencies, and similar settings. Graduates of this program are eligible to apply for a license as a New Jersey Licensed Professional Counselor after successfully completing an examination and 4,000 hours of supervised experience.

I chose GC GCU… Heidi Salonia ‘01, CTS, LMHC, BCETS M.A. in Counseling Psychology

School Psychology As the need grows for highly trained counselors who can address the psychological, emotional, academic, and behavioral needs of school-age children and adolescents, employment for school counselors is expected to increase 14 percent by the year 2018. GCU’s M.A. in School Psychology program prepares you to work in public and private schools, in child and adolescent mental health facilities, or to continue on to doctoral studies in school psychology. To qualify for certification as a school psychologist in New Jersey, students must complete the 75-credit program: an M.A. in School Psychology degree for 33 credits, followed by the specialist-level Certificate of Advanced Graduate Study for an additional 42 credits. The M.A. prepares you for doctoral work while the certificate enables you to apply for state and national certification. The M.A. in School Psychology/Certificate of Advanced Graduate Study program has national approval/recognition (conditional) by the National Association of School Psychologists (NASP). This allows program graduates to earn the NASP’s Nationally Certified School Psychologist credential, a designation that employers often look for as they screen applicants for jobs. Nanci Bachman ‘06 M.A. in Theology Director of Adult Faith Formation, St. David the King, Princeton Junction, NJ

“As an adult returning to school, GCU was a welcoming and wonderful place to be. The Mercy core values and the emphasis on education and supporting women and children were a natural fit for what I wanted to do in ministry. I’m using what I learned from GCU on the job every day.”
