10. True prosperity…The arts are fundamental to our humanity. They ennoble and inspire us—fostering creativity, goodness, and beauty. They help us express our values, build bridges between cultures, and bring us together regardless of ethnicity, religion, or age. When times are tough, the arts are salve for the ache.

9. Stronger communities…University of Pennsylvania researchers have demonstrated that a high concentration of the arts in a city leads to higher civic engagement, more social cohesion, higher child welfare, and lower poverty rates. A vibrant arts community ensures that young people are not left to be raised solely in a pop culture and tabloid marketplace.

8. Health and well-being…nearly one-half of the nation’s healthcare institutions provide arts programming for patients, families, and even staff. 78 percent deliver these programs because of their healing benefits to patients—shorter hospital stays, better pain management, and less medication.

7. 21st Century workforce . . . reports by The Conference Board show creativity is among the top applied skills sought by employers. 72 percent of business leaders say creativity is of high importance when hiring. The biggest creativity indicator? A college arts degree. Their report concludes, “…the arts—music, creative writing, drawing, dance—provide skills sought by employers of the third millennium.”

6. Improved academic performance…longitudinal data of 25,000 students demonstrate that students with an education rich in the arts have higher GPAs and standardized test

scores, lower drop-out rates, and even better attitudes about community service. These benefits are reaped by students regardless of social-economic status. Children motivated by the arts develop attention skills and strategies for memory retrieval that also apply to other academic subject areas such as math and science.

5. Arts in the schools = better SAT scores…students with four years of arts or music in high school average 100 points better on their SAT scores than students with one-half year or less. Better scores are found in all three portions of the test: math, reading, and writing.

4. Creative Industries…the creative industries are arts businesses that range from nonprofit museums, symphonies, and theaters to for-profit film, architecture, and advertising companies. An analysis of Dun & Bradstreet data counts 756,007 businesses in the U.S. involved in the creation or distribution of the arts that employ 2.99 million people—representing 4.14 percent of all businesses and 2.17 percent of all employees, respectively. (Contact Americans for the Arts for your local and state numbers.)

3. Arts are the cornerstone of tourism…arts travelers are ideal tourists—they stay longer and spend more. The U.S. Department of Commerce reports that the percentage of international travelers including arts and culture events during their stay has increased annually the last six years.

2. Arts are good for local merchants…the typical arts attendee spends $27.79 per person, per event, not including the cost of admission on items such as meals, parking, shopping, and babysitters. Non-local arts audiences (who live outside the county) spend nearly twice as much as local arts attendees ($40.19 compared to $19.53)—valuable revenue for local businesses and the community.

1. The arts are an Industry…arts organizations are responsible businesses, employers, and consumers. They spend money locally, generate government revenue, and are a cornerstone of tourism and economic development. Nonprofit arts organizations generate $166 billion in economic activity annually, supporting 5.7 million jobs and generating nearly $30 billion in government revenue. Investment in the arts supports jobs, generates tax revenues, and advances our creativity-based economy.

OLD BUSINESS. 1. Mission Statement. The committee discussed the mission statement. It was decided that the following terms were to be incorporated in the final statement: "educate, entertain, inspire, unite, arts, communication," and/or "mentoring." Leslie Raab provided the draft of her mission statement. ACTION: Each Committee member will review the draft and provide comment/corrections for the next meeting.

2. Position points. The committee discussed position points to support the mission statement. Kathleen Mardis provided 10 position points (draft) to the committee for review. ACTION: Each Committee member will review the draft and provide comment/corrections for the next meeting.

3. Funding/obtaining a not-for-profit status. Eric Van Otteren told the group that STAT (Snellville Trade & Tourism) is willing to act in the status of keeping funds (using their

accounting). ACTION: Jon Cates has been in contact with Susan Covert Chappelear (On the Board of Directors for STAT) He is going to ask her to email the non-profit (and banking) information to him.

4. "Hello Arts" official name. After discussion, the committee came to the conclusion that the name is the most important action item, since we need it to properly publicize and move forward. ACTION: Each member of the Steering Committee will submit one name for discussion by the SC (Steering Committee). The best of these will be presented to the larger group for approval. ACTION: Kathleen Mardis will post the names to the SC page. All SC Members will review and comment & choices at the next meeting.

5. Subcommittees - The SC determined the need for the following subcommittees to be formed from the general "Hello Arts" group: a. Data collection - person (or persons) to compile a list of arts organizations (profit or nonprofit) that we'd like to interact with in South Gwinnett. Person or persons to assemble a calendar of arts related activities in South Gwinnett (talent shows, art exhibits, performances). b. Fund-raising & donation solicitation committee. c. Producers for organizing a minimum of 3 contests: writing, painting and/or performing arts. d. Publicity Committee - to produce graphic art & other publicity materials as needed to promote "Hello Arts". ACTION: Kathleen Mardis will work on a handout (soliciting volunteers) to be given to the main group at the next meeting of that group.

6. Eric Van Otteren suggested that the Steering Committee look into obtaining space in the plaza that houses the K-Mart and the Hobby Lobby. The group discussed the location suggested by Eric as well as several other possibilities. Also discussed was waiting for a formal request until after the group had articles of incorporation and/or more information on funding and how STAT will be supporting us. ACTION: Tony Webb has taken over action on this item from Kathleen Mardis.

7. Snellville Fall Festival: Jon Cates reported on the size of the tent needed and other supplies. There will be the silent auction (with donations from John Duke and other artists) at the festival. Deborah Ankrom Kepes is also donating a month of classes from Cobble Creek Studios. Jon spoke to the Christmas Carol Musical Director about having some of the actors work the Festival (in costume). The Musical Director is still considering it. Jon has had good responses for help in manning the booth. The Fall

Festival Committee will meet on Thursday to finalize action on the booth schedule.

ACTION: Jon Cates will contact Eric Van Otteren to determine how the materials (for distribution) will be prepared. He will also find out if Eric can obtain candy to be handed out to children (for Halloween).

8. The Committee confirmed the event at Cobble Creek Studios – but the correct date is 9 & 10 November (versus 11-12 as published in the last minutes) ACTION: John Duke will represent the "Hello Arts" Group and pass out information.

9. Web page: The group discussed having a web page separate from the facebook page as an internet presence for "Hello Arts". Deborah Ankrom Kepes noted that she has a space on the Cobble Creek site to generate interest in the Arts Group. ACTION: Action was tabled until such time as we have an official name and know more about funding for the group.

10. Administrative tools: The group also discussed creating a letterhead and donation receipt. ACTION: Action was tabled until such time as we have an official name and know more about funding for the group. Kathleen Mardis will draft these documents.

2. Tony reported there was no word about the Hello Arts having a meeting place at the Kmart Plaza.

3. It was moved and seconded by Jonathan and Leslie that an application be formed for Steering Committee membership. After discussion, it was passed unanimously, and Leslie will compile an application with Name, Address, and Arts Expertise to be included.

8. John Duke suggested a $35 fee for Hello Arts membership, and this was tabled for future discussion.

9. John reported $30 in the Snellville Fall Festival Booth from donations. All who helped with the booth should be commended. Many fliers from area arts were passed out, and many names were collected to add to the email list.

10. The meeting was adjourned at 4:15. The next meeting will be determined at the November 7 general meeting.

OLD BUSINESS 1. The Fall Festival was discussed at length. The SC decided to take the week to refine the most important purposed and target client base for the festival. Decisions on how best to proceed and where & when to hold it were tabled till the next meeting.

ACTION: All members 2. Leslie Raab reported on the web site. Homestead offers one that meets our needs (calendar, pages, and cost) at $105.00 per year. The SC voted unanimously to use that.

Leslie will proceed as webmaster with the target 'go live' date of 5 March 2012.

(Website bill pending: $107.00) OLD BUSINESS 1. The Fall Festival was discussed at length. The SC is going to partner with STAT in order to take advantage of their goals and interests dovetailing with ours, as well as their ability to cover our event with insurance and permits. Kirk Buis will act as liaison.

We'll be participating in either the Fall Festival or the International Festival. Eric Van Otteren will provide necessary email addresses to Kirk. We will also solicit a Project Manager for the Festival at the general Meeting of SGCA. ACTION: Kirk Buis/Eric Van Otteren. Kathleen Mardis will include this item on the General Meeting Agenda 2. Leslie Raab reported on the web site. Homestead does NOT offer a calendar, essential for our corporation. Leslie has found a vendor that will give us all we need (Network Solutions). Leslie (as webmaster) will also look into getting SGCA space on the STAT edirectory.

4. Logo. The new logo was discussed in regard to how it would transfer for embroidery and printing in various medias. We decided to create a couple of versions, some with the web address and some without and to set the “@Snellville� to below the main graphic. Leslie will make the necessary alterations. Kathleen will work to include the new logo on on-line products, John will survey local businesses to comparison shop for T-shirt and Polo shirt creation. ACTION: Leslie/Kathleen/John 5. 9. Use/availability of the Snellville Senior Center was discussed. Eric Van Otterren reported that the use of the Senior Center is pretty much restricted to events for Seniors.

CLOSED NEW BUSINESS 10. Status of the Articles of Incorporation: Kirk has emailed Kelly Kautz who is our lawyer for the incorporation. Kirk will report the status when he has an update.

ACTION: Kirk Buis 11. Examination and lengthy discussion of the Business Plan. Many Objects, goal, and strategies were discussed, with the feeling that completion of the Business Plan will now become a priority; next meeting of the SC will be dedicated to completion of the plan.

ACTION All Members 12. The Shops on Scenic Logo Contest. The SC is in full support of this project by Shops on Scenic. Kathleen will email them to get the details of the contest and will incorporate those into the Agenda for the next General Meeting on March5, 2012.

ACTION: Kathleen Mardis 13. The SC voted unanimously to make a presentation at the City Council Meeting on March 26th. Kirk Buis volunteered chosen (unanimously) to represent us. ACTION: Kirk Buis, Eric Van Otteren (will put us on the City Council Agenda) All members: provide support to Kirk in preparing the briefing.

14. Eric Van Otteren suggested that the term, “providing” be changed to, “supporting,” or “Providing and supporting.” The SC voted (5 of 6) to change the word to, “Providing and supporting.” VOTE: Change APPROVED 15. Kirk Buis suggested we prepare magnets (with our new logo) for distribution for the next General Meeting. John Duke took action to create magnets after getting the revised logo from Leslie. ACTION: John Duke, Leslie Raab 16. DISCUSSION: There was a discussion over whether Snellville City Hall would have a “Snellville History Room.” Eric Van Otteren reported that the Snellville Historical Society will be providing historical decorations to offices. CLOSED 17. Date of the General SGCA Meeting (after the March 5th one) was established for April 9, 2012 at City Hall. ACTION: Eric Van Otteren will schedule our use of the room at City Hall.

OLD BUSINESS 1. Presentation of Logo & Website Kirk Buis and John Duke presented the logo and news about the website. John Duke distributed some excellent and attractive magnets featuring the logo.

2. Discussion of Fall Festival and other events/solicitation of participants (Kirk Buis) Kirk Buis talked about the Fall Festival and the tie in with Snellville Tourism and Trade's (STAT) International Festival. We are to present a Fine Arts portion – we solicited volunteers to help with our part of this project. The SGSC Application will be on the website once the City Attorney approves the format. We also talked about various ideas for the SGCA to pursue; writing contests, art contests, and more. We again are looking for energetic people to volunteer to work with the Steering Committee to make things happen in Snellville.

3. Discussion of efforts to enhance City Hall with work of local artists (Jonathan Cates) Ideas for possible events including writing contests, art contest, etc. (Kirk Buis) Kirk and Jonathan Cates discussed the plans for the art competition. Jonathan went over the rules – John Duke brought in some art for display to show the quality of work solicited

for the competition.

NEW BUSINESS 4. Ideas for helping New London Theatre. The difficulties that New London Theatre is facing were discussed. Suggestions made to help New London included putting a 'wish list' for items needed on their website and also putting a calendar of workdays up in order that the public know when to help with the move to their new location.

5. Shops on Scenic Logo Contest (Kathleen Mardis) I talked about the Shops on Scenic logo contest, though We did not as yet as the very specific details. When those details are provided, we will feature them on our website. Tom Witts (attendee) added some informative and interesting details about what Shops on Scenic is about; and how it represents active and extraordinary shop owners who are dedicated to the future & culture of Snellville.

6. We discussed the the attachments to the agenda: the calendar (anyone who wants to add dates/events, please contact me (kathi@mardis.com); the survey – please fill out and return to us when you get the chance. This survey will also be added to the website.; and the 10 position points of the SGCA.

The Fall Festival/International Festival. Her Honor would like to see us participate in either the STAT Fall Festival or the STAT International Festival – she will support us getting parking and other city permissions, permits, and assistance. Kirk Buis will follow up with STAT to get more details. ACTION: Kirk Buis 2. Our Web site is up and running. Kirk Buis made the suggestion that we put our minutes on the web site versus putting them on our Facebook page. It was unanimously approved. ACTION: Leslie Raab, Kathleen Mardis 3. Artwork hung in the halls at City Hall: Work is ongoing to get the license agreements and city policy to implement this program. TABLED pending more information from the City of Snellville.

4. By laws and the non profit submission. The mayor has our paperwork for review (as a lawyer); when she is done, she will send it to us for inclusion in our submission to the Secretary of State. The Committee voted unanimously that we would have the general meetings of SGCA o/a the first Monday of each month at the Snellville City Hall.

The Mayor told us that she will provide us a copy of the Snail logo to be used in the Snellville Days Parade. We will investigate best ways to create the Snails.
