A Show to Remember by Sally Wingler, THA President
I
t is no secret that the 2022 South Eastern Regional Junior Hereford Exposition (SRJHE) was the largest ever, and it is now on the pages of history! The sweet sound of Hereford echoed throughout Hyder-Burks Pavilion in Cookeville, Tennessee June 9,10,11.
the SRJHE. It takes a village to make events possible so a very special shout-out to Tennessee Junior Hereford advisors Matt and Meredith Collins, Lee and Andrea Rushton and Scott and Cher Woolfolk for your advice to the youth of the industry.
The SRJHE is considered one of the highlights for many of the National Junior Hereford Association youth members and their families. It is 3 days full of fun, comradery and competition. In total there were 231 Youth entries and 107 showmanship entries hailing from 13 states. Tennessee was represented by 20 exhibitors.
Many sponsors who supported the youth industry deserve our thanks too. Among them are Walker Hereford Farm, Tennessee River Music, Lookout Mountain Genetics, McGuffee Polled Herefords and Piney Volunteer Fire Department. Your generosity does not go unrecognized. Thanks to the Tennessee Hereford Queen Jaclyn Aiken and other state queens.
This event is very special because of the tireless work behind the scenes to make this exposition possible. Therefore, everyone should extend gratitude to all those that worked so hard to give the membership the experience many hoped for and all look forward to somewhere each year. Events like this would not be possible without Junior Advisors and event sponsors.
Straight lines of elite Hereford stretched across the arena. Exhibitors stared intently at judges Austin Matheny of Kentucky and Cliff Orley of Pennsylvania as they sized up the impressive display before them. In the midst of the heightened anticipation one was called to the center of the ring for their moment of glory.
With that in mind, thank you to the Tennessee Hereford Association and the members for your support of
Spring Calving Cow Dispersal
Selling our entire group of Spring Calving Cows (13) due to Chestnut Mound, Tenn. minor medical issues.
Many thanks to this year’s judges and congratulations to all the exhibitors. A special shout-out to all who received awards. I just can’t say enough about the value of youth livestock programs and I encourage junior members to become more involved with the National Junior Hereford Association. Your involvement will help develop a network of people, despite life’s distractions. I highly encourage juniors to get involved in not only showing animals, but get involved with the breed association as well. Contribute your time and talent. You will learn a lot, but you will develop great relationships and benefits that will help throughout your life. The mission of the National Junior Hereford Association is to develop leaders of tomorrow. Showbox conversations can be compared to classroom lessons in that an individual can learn so much from their experience and other people. I can’t ever forget how wonderful it was to grow up on a farm around livestock, to learn good work ethics, animal care skills and how to work with people.

As a part of the Hereford family it was a remarkable gift and journey to once again gather to spread joy and make memories. Certainly, it will not be one too soon to forget. Hope to see all of you again July 16-21 at the National Junior Hereford Exposition “Banner in the Bluegrass” Louisville, Kentucky.

2022 THA Family of the Year by Stan Webster and Blaina Best
Kathryn, Mitch, and Johnny Ingram
O
n Friday, March 11, 2022, during the Tennessee Beef Agribition in Lebanon, the Tennessee Hereford Association (THA) proudly presented Mitch, Kathryn, and Johnny Ingram at Notchey Creek Farms with the 2022 Family of the Year award. The Family of the year award was started in the mid 90’s to recognize an outstanding family within the THA membership each year. Stan Webster stated “I have been honored to be on the committee for around 20 years. I personally cannot think of a family that has done more to promote the breed, support youth associations, assist with sales, and help with our newsletter over the past 45 years that I have been a member of THA”. Mitch and Kathryn Ingram met in elementary school, graduated from the same high school, and earned degrees from the same two colleges (including Master’s Degrees in Ag Education). They married in 2000. Both share a Hereford background. Mitch’s family had registered horned Hereford cattle before transitioning to a commercial herd. Kathryn’s family purchased their first Polled Herefords from Mont-Vue the year before she Tennessee Hereford Newsletter • Summer 2022 • 8
was born. She grew up showing at all the East and Middle Tennessee county fairs and at the state and regional level. Shortly before their marriage, Kathryn’s father, Johnny Stephens, passed away. They inherited the herd and purchased more of the operation from her mother as time passed. They planted roots a few hundred feet from Mitch’s Madisonville childhood farm. 19 years ago, Mitch and Kathryn were blessed with the birth of their son, Johnny. He was diagnosed with Autism. Although they had both taught children with Autism, they did not completely understand it. They had to quickly learn and adjust to provide Johnny with the support and care he needed to thrive. Johnny is currently a senior at Tellico Plains High School where he loves to play on his Without Limits Baseball team and spend time with his horses. In 2018, the family expanded as God sent Brandon and Kristin West and their children Ryleigh and Carver, to partner and expand the operation. Mitch refers to Brandon as his second little brother. Brandon has taken over many of the day-to-day responsibilities and is building a new home on the farm. The Ingram’s run a herd of 50 momma cows using both AI and Natural Breeding to enhance genetics. They market their cattle through private treaty and several consignment sales in the southeast. They are expanding to F1 Black Baldies as well as freezer beef.

The Ingram’s helped to bring back the defunct East Tennessee Association and assisted to start the Fall Kickoff Classic Sale, typically the first sale of the season. Along with being a high school agriculture teacher, Kathryn manages the East Tennessee Sale and has expanded her marketing and design services to several producers and sales in the Southeast. She is now the sale manager for the Middle Tennessee, North Carolina, and South Carolina Hereford Association sales in addition to the ETPHA. Kathryn served on the TPHA and THA Board of Directors for an extended term during the merger of the two Associations and, in May 2017, she took on the role as editor of the Tennessee Hereford Newsletter and Directory.

Q&A with Tennessee Hereford Queen Jaclyn Aiken Can you tell us about yourself and your background? I was born and raised on a farm in Telford, Tennessee where we have beef cattle, straw, hay, and also grow corn for silage. I was active in 4-H and FFA and loved anything agriculture, especially showing cattle. I graduated from Walters State Community College in December, 2021 with a degree in Agriculture Business.
memory, would have to be when I won my first “Grand Champion” purple ribbon. Can you tell our readers about some of the Hereford activities that you are currently involved in?
The Hereford activitiy that I am most involved in is showing cattle. I took one of my heifers to the National Hereford Show in 2018. I also showed and represented as TN Hereford Queen at the Southeast Junior Regionals in CookevI attend Oakland C.P. Church and ille, Tennessee and I’ll be going to enjoy spoiling my little nieces, spendLouisville, Kentucky on July 16th, 2022 ing time with family and friends, and Jaclyn Aiken 2022 THA Queen for the Junior Nationals “Banners in the showing cattle. Bluegrass” cattle show. I am also serve as the East Tenn. How did you get involved in the Hereford industry? Director of the Tennessee Junior Hereford Association. My involvement with the Hereford industry began when What are your future education and/or career plans? I purchased my first two registered Hereford heifers to I plan to work with other well respected Hereford breedshow in high school. I was immediately hooked on this ers and continue to expand my herd. breed; they have the best temperament of any breed that I’ve ever worked with. I have met so many well-respected Hereford breeders and they have all been so helpful in obtaining and growing my herd. Why did you decide to run for the THA Queen? I decided to run for the THA Queen because of the awesome opportunity to travel and promote this breed. I remember seeing all the Hereford Queens leading in the classes at the NAILE show and thought how neat it would be to run for that one day.
WHITEHAWK CHIEF 318G ET
What do you hope to accomplish as the THA Queen? I want to be a smiling face to everyone coming out of the ring to receive their ribbons and also to encourage other young girls to run for the Tennessee Hereford Queen. I want to encourage more youth to get involved in all of the different opportunities and organizations within the Hereford Association.
