Give Honor To Whom Honorable
by Sally Wingler, Tennessee Hereford Association PresidentWhile I was attending the National Junior Hereford Exposition in Louisville, Kentucky July 2022, a Tennessee Junior exhibitor had just been acknowledged in class by the announcer on the loudspeaker. The speaker continued to say, “some years ago I was honored to judge the open Hereford show at theTennessee State Fair in Nashville. Tennessee Hereford breeders are serious about the Hereford breed. They made an excellent presentation for me to judge that year at their State Fair. In addition to this, there have been numerous Hereford breeders both junior and adult who have volunteered their time and talent to the American Hereford Association for the promotion of the Her eford breed nationally. This has certainly not gone unnoticed and the honorable service you have provided has helped get the Hereford breed where it is today.”
These comments made me proud of the Tennes see Hereford Association. I just thought they were worth passing onto you. We’re not perfect that’s for sure, but I am proud of the Agricultural community in our State. Thanks for all you do on a daily basis. Sometimes it is good to know what others think about us too.
While on the topic of honor, I would like to say sometimes honoring someone is more than being polite. It is being honest, it is sharing life. That’s the kind of honor most of us in the agriculture life want. How do we do that? Some ways honor can be expressed is by paying compliments, asking ques tions, value viewpoints, forgive, celebrate others accomplishment, cheer others on, listen, encour age and appreciate differences.
With the recent passing of the beloved cowboy writer Baxter A Black in June 2022. Much has been said about honoring people. We tend to honor people after they pass and rightly so.
We’re all concerned about leaving a legacy. However, the legacy we leave isn’t in the things we leave to others, even though that can be nice. It’s about how we affected those around us. As par ents, we teach our children to honor the adults in our lives, and also honor grandparents, teachers,
employers etc. It has been said that much of our culture today has forgotten what it means to honor.
Agriculture folks tend to be a somewhat united crowd. Oh, we may not agree on the best breed of cattle, which pouron to use or the best grazing ro tations to use. However, those of us in Agriculture may see honor daily in: the natural life cycle, moma cows caring for their babies, the work we do, how we treat our livestock, and our conservation with our neighbors.
We could all laugh about the daily life happen ings Baxter wrote about. His ability to make peo ple laugh about the realities about agriculture is unparalleled. What we all love about his poems is that we can see them happening. That’s the kind of honor that most of us in Agriculture life want.

Faces of Leadership Conference
KANSAS CITY, Mo. — Ninety-two junior members from 22 different states and Canada all gathered in Billings, Mont., for the 2022 Faces of Leadership conference, hosted by the Na tional Junior Hereford Association (NJHA) on August 3-6. The theme of the conference was “Sky’s the Limit,” hosting tours of Hereford operations in the big sky country, inspirational and educational keynote speakers, sessions hosted by the NJHA Board of Directors, tours of the iconic Public Auction Yards (PAY’s) and fun adventures that included white water rafting on the Yellowstone River.
A highlight of the event was hearing from legendary owner/ operator of PAY’s, Joe Goggins. He fielded difficult questions posed by the Hereford juniors about the future of the industry and the best ways to continue to be progressive and forward thinking. “We have made cattle on the North American conti nent much better,” said Goggins. “If you outwork your com petition then the sky’s the limit for this generation moving forward.”
The closing keynote speaker, Cheryl Mitchell, joined the attendees during the entire event, participating in each tour and activity, as well as coaching the NJHA Board of Directors on the proper way to host their workshops. By attending all of the different aspects of the conference, she was able to bring highlights of the week into her keynote, using the white water rafting as an analogy, the tours as learning material and the speakers as inspiration.
“Your mind is the most powerful organ that you have,” said Mitchell, as she emphasized the importance of being a good leader and taking care of your body, mind and spirit, in order to lead others. “It is where you win and lose every decision, every choice in your life. From the minute you get out of bed, you make 35,000 decisions each day all within your mind. So how are you using it and strengthening it?”
Insightful leadership lessons were also provided by the key note speakers. Amanda Radke kicked off the first afternoon, with an emphasis on being leaders in the industry and shar ing our ag story with the public. “More important than your passion is to find your purpose,” said Radke. “Passions can change, but your purpose will not.” This purpose driven life was emphasized in the tours of the Hereford operations.
The first evening was spent at Mohican West Polled Herefords, Laurel, Mont., where junior members had the opportunity to see MOHICAN BLUEPRINT 69B. The next day hosted tours of ORIgen, Billings, Mont., where juniors saw the different ways the company manages bulls and provides opportunities for seedstock and commercial producers. Following this the attendees traveled to L Bar W Cattle Company, in Absarokee, Mont. There they heard from McKenzie Johnston of Nebraska, before exploring the cattle on a hayride. This operation provid ed high quality viewing of Line 1 Hereford females as well as a strong line of F1 Hereford-Angus cross cattle.
The NJHA Board of Directors had been preparing for the event for the months leading up to the days in Montana, and hosted workshops throughout the week for the attendees. Workshops ranged from a personality test to assist with determining their different leadership strengths, as well as the different lessons that assist with change and learning your individual habits, rituals and patterns.
The Faces of Leadership conference is supported by the Hereford Youth Foundation of America (HYFA) and the Rick and Bonnie Coley-Malir Endowment. The 2023 conference will be hosted in Malir’s hometown of Columbus, Ohio. Stay tuned for more information regarding next year’s conference.

Hereford Women of Tennessee News
by Andrea RushtonAs a busy summer show season is nearing its end, the Her eford Women of Tennessee would like to acknowledge the dedication and hard work of Miss Jaclyn Aiken during this time. Anyone who has seen her at an event has no doubt been greet ed by her sweet personality and warm smile. We are so excited that she will be taking her outstanding qualities with her to Kansas City this October as she competes for the national title. We are thrilled for others to see the excellent representative she is for the great state of Ten nessee. Best of luck, Jaclyn!
In other news, because of the change in location for the state show this year and after some consideration, the Hereford Women of Tennessee voted to delay awarding our annual schol arship. This year’s Hereford Women of Tennessee Schol arship will be given out at the Tennessee Hereford Association’s Annual Meet ing that will be held during Tennessee Beef Agribiton. We are also in the process of updating our application, and will do our
best to give everyone notice when it becomes available. Look for a deadline to be in the early part of 2023. Remember to pay close attention to all rules, especially noting that any eligible applicant must be a current member of the Tennessee Junior Hereford Association for two (2) consecutive years. As always, we are excited to support our Hereford youth and look forward to learning about their accomplishments during the upcoming application process.
Another quick reminder for interested ladies is the opportu nity to be a part of the National Hereford Women (NHW). This organization is a wonderful leadership organization that is ded icated in its support of the Hereford breed. We are privileged to have Sally Wingler and Bethany Mansfield as a current mem bers of the NHW Board of Directors. Membership information and dues can be submitted online at herefordwomen.org.
With fall upon us, we want to wish our Hereford family a wonderful end of the year. Wherever the road may take you, we hope any upcoming sales, shows or other endeavors will be successful for you all.
