Avoiding Common Mistakes That Prevent Success by Sally Wingler, THA President I hope each of you and yours had the happiest of holidays. In this new year 2022, I wish all of you peace in your heart, safety and good health. Please be especially grateful for the opportunity to serve the Tennessee Hereford Association. Theodore Roosevelt Jr. was the 26th president of the United States. He had a very frail childhood marred with severe asthma and nearsightedness which demanded homeschooling. However, he later became a Harvard student. Once, in a letter to his mother he wrote ”Looking back over my 18 years, I have literally never had a bad day, except by my own fault.” Sometimes we need to be reminded of common mistakes we make that can become barriers preventing the success we seek. They can inhibit our ability to reach our full potential. We all share a leadership connection to the Tennessee Hereford Association to avoid making these common mistakes and oversights, so that once addressed and overcome, greater progress will be made for our membership as a connected whole. Some may believe that we do not need formal meetings. Some of the more common excuses we hear are; we are too busy, it’s hard to get everyone together, we are not sure what to talk about, participants feel like meetings are a waste of time, or every time we have a meeting, it ends up being a stream of complaints and disagreements. If these are the reasons, then the unfortunate reality is: Leadership has failed! Leaders need to create an environment in meetingwhere people feel like they can contribute, gain valuable information and discuss issues of high importance without being a waste of their time. Meetings are most effective and efficient when there is a consistent meeting agenda, a set time limit, each person has an opportunity to speak, and the meeting ends with clarity on discussions that were made. A structure of responsibility must be incorporated in the system. Accountability is the best solution I know. Each person is personally responsible for the task to be performed. If clear accountability is not established and not enforced over time, we will lose membership for a more positive and rewarding environment. The standard in the Tennessee Hereford Association includes a desire for a high level of professionalism. There are many advantages to a professional organization regardless of size. It provides clear behavioral expectations for the organization and garners respect from Tennessee Hereford Newsletter • Winter 2022 • 6
the community, your vendors and other professionals. These people make deliberate choices as to whom they prefer they will do business with and with whom they will associate. If they have a choice, they will work with someone who will constantly perform at a high level of professionalism. We naturally seek to be around individuals who are respectful, have high integrity, are gracious in all situations, attentive and polite. We want them to be punctual, dependable, loyal and cooperative. These are all desirable traits. In contrast, we tend to avoid those who are gossipers, thrive on drama, and focus on negativity and pessimism. Establishing professionalism is a part of our culture that feeds on itself and encourages everyone involved to make this expectation of personal behavior. Structure and governess in an organization refers to knowing who the top decision makers are in your organization, the process by which they make decisions, the chain of command to ensure that those decisions are acted upon and the general organization of responsibility. Without clear structure and governess members may assume they have much more control and authority then their positions warrant. Addressing this oversight of governess requires a clear structure that may include committees, some description of the job members are to perform and a method of accountability. Structure ensures that responsibilities are fairly divided. Structure addresses the fact that not everyone has the same skills, competence levels, passions, and other traits that make for a successful committee member. Vision and mission statements provide important clarity for the organization. The Tennessee Hereford Association has such. A statement of how values will be expressed, and long term plans and goals are included. These provide clarity for members so they can make decisions aligned with values. Lacking such, organizations will tend to make impulsive, ill-fated decisions without considering long term impact on the organization or breed. You may feel that some of the strategies mentioned do not fit your situation. However, I recommend you consider each one carefully and determine if maybe one or two of them deserve your attention.

Q&A with Bethany Mansfield, National Hereford Women Director red cows with white faces - it was love at first sight. Learning of the docility of Herefords and attending a few production sales sealed the deal. Everything thereafter was for the love of Herefords and our new family we were starting. We want to create a legacy for our two sons, Logan and Landon, to carry forward. Can you tell us a little about your farm and new business venture?
Bethany Mansfield of Liberty, Tennessee was elected to a four-year term to the National Hereford Women (NHW) Board of Directors this past October. She and her husband Josh own Ridgetop Farms and Short Mountain Livestock Testing. I recently had the chance to catch-up with Bethany and ask her a few questions about running for the NHW board and her new responsibilities. You were not raised on a farm or around Hereford cattle, how did your passion for Herefords begin? My husband, Josh, and I always dreamed of living on a cattle ranch. I grew up in rural Kentucky and my great grandparents raised oxen for plowing and working fields. Josh’s grandfather raised commercial cattle in West Tennessee, and he would spend weeks in the summer helping his grandfather tend them. In 2012, we decided to take the plunge and started buying property with my Father-in-law and Motherin-law, Dr. Joseph and Dorothy Mansfield. We began to piece close to six hundred acres back together. It was essentially a blank slate that needed fencing and a lot of work. We purchased a set of eight commercial cow/ calf pairs that we called our “training wheel cows’’. The goal was pretty simple, keep them alive! I attended the Master Beef courses in 2013 then signed up and completed the first UT/Select Sire AI certification program in Spring Hill, TN. While we were busy building our new home & farm, we would drive by our neighbor’s and see the prettiest Tennessee Hereford Newsletter • Winter 2022 • 8
Ridgetop Farms was a dream that has become reality. We have worked hard over the past decade to collect and breed cattle that are both pretty, functional, and efficient. We run close to one hundred head of registered Herefords and practice rotational grazing in effort to maximize the long growing season for grass in Middle Tennessee. We continually seek out the best Hereford genetics in the country and fold them into our cowherd as part of our progressive breeding program. Short Mountain Livestock Testing was an idea spawned from our extensive work with flushing, IVF, AI, and embryo transfers. The more we understood the science behind using these breeding functions, the more information we craved. We wanted to know what “stuck” as early as possible without potentially risking the pregnancy. Blood pregnancy testing is an effective way to achieve this. This new venture allows us to share this service with other breeders in Middle Tennessee and surrounding states. What motivated you to run for the NHW board of directors? We had been attending the annual meeting and taking in the educational seminars for a couple of years and that is where I met several former board members. I fell in love with their mission to invest in the future of our breed and youth. A current member and dear friend reached out to suggest I run for the NHW board of directors. I felt like it was a calling since I wanted to be more involved. I have 7- and 9-year-old boys that love this industry. I am passionate about Herefords and felt like my non-Ag background and Business and Marketing education might bring something different to the table to help positively contribute to the promotion of the breed and our youth. What was your favorite part of the experience?
Meeting and collaborating with these brilliant Hereford ladies has been a treat. My favorite experience so far was watching the presentation of a $63,000 check to the Hereford Youth Foundation of America to fully fund the Ostgaard-Breiner Educational Scholarships. These amazing women volunteered their time and skills to gather resources to fund this scholarship. The pure joy it brought to be able to fund this scholarship to help better someone’s future was astounding. This was the second day of gathering as a newly elected board member and it motivated me to see the possibilities and initiatives we could take on together. The NHW strive to promote Herefords, CHB, and support the Hereford Youth. How does the organization go about accomplishing those goals? Education, Education, Education. We accomplish these goals by providing educational resources. It takes a village to accomplish what we do. We collaborate with the AHA, NJHA, and HYFA throughout the year to orchestrate multiple fundraising campaigns for youth scholarships and activities through various fundraisers. This year’s goal is to fully fund the Bud Snidow Award. This past November we offered our first ever NHW Annual Calendar that was filled with photographs from amazing female Hereford photographers. We just completed our Cimarron Trailer raffle, which I am thrilled to say a Tennessee breeder won! The goal is twofold; working together to connect and engage Hereford enthusiasts throughout the country and raise funds to support our industry’s youth. We also take a lot of pride in our Hereford Queen Program and our ongoing involvement with the Junior National Hereford Expo (JNHE). We host hands-on activities and contests to promote breed and industry education. As an organization, we hope to build knowledge and confidence in our youth through these programs. What will be your responsibilities for the board this year? It takes teamwork and a great membership to make this organization run effectively. This board hit the ground running after our annual meeting in October. I have many different responsibilities on the board since I am on six different committees. My skills are in marketing and advertising, therefore my primary focus since joining so far is on our digital presence. I have been working on promotional material for our social media platforms to promote our mission and fundrais-
ers. The website is getting a big refresh with exciting new interfaces! What are you looking forward to the most during your time on the board? Are there any specific goals you hope to accomplish within the organization? I look forward to working alongside amazing Hereford enthusiasts and learning from them to further the NHW Mission. We are all from different walks of life with various life experiences that will contribute to the inevitable success of the organization. This is an amazing learning and growth opportunity on a personal & professional level. One of the challenges we have as an organization is making our members feel included. The ladies of the NHW are spread across these United States and it is difficult to make it feel warm and welcoming when we, as a membership, only meet twice a year. My goal, as well as this board’s, is to communicate more by utilizing various digital platforms to keep everyone informed, included, and involved. We are so fortunate to have the breed membership that we do and when we all work together towards the same goal, success can be limitless.

Tennessee Hereford Assocation Legacy Award Winner by Kathryn Ingram
Julie Chapin was recognized as the THA Legacy Award winner in 2021. She has left a remarkable legacy for the Tennessee Hereford Association from its formation in 2014 to the present day. She has made history as the first female president of our association, but the legacy she will leave is much more. To be an effective leader, you must have a genuine desire for the organization to succeed. Another essential leadership quality is the ability to coordinate members to work together as a cohesive unit to achieve the organization’s goals. Julie stepped up and took the challenge to unite our membership to improve the programs and outreach of our association. Julie’s determination to grow our newly combined organization and promote Hereford cattle has always been evident. Her character and willingness to work are what helped make it happen. THA board members that have served with Julie describe her as straightforward, honest, humble, dedicated, and a calming influence. She has a great gift for logistics, with the ability to look at a situation from all sides and see the possible future ramifications of actions taken. In addition to serving as President from 2015 to 2017, Julie has served on the Agribition and THA Show Committees since the organization was formed in 2014. She currently serves as chair of the THA Show Committee. She was also a board member and served as secretary in the former Tennessee Hereford Association. Julie grew up in a Hereford family in Northern Ohio. Her grandparents started the herd in the 1950s.
Her parents, Keith and Becky Chapin, grew the herd to approximately 100 head. Her parents traveled the show road. They participated in shows as far away as Nashville, Memphis, Harrisburg, and the Ohio State Fair for many years. Julie explained that she has been involved in the Hereford industry and the showring her entire life. She said “As a matter of fact, my first trip to Nashville was in my mother’s womb. She tells the story that she was 8 months pregnant and out on the show road and miserable. She finally told my dad that it was time to go home! So, I guess you could say I didn’t have much choice but to love Hereford cattle. Growing up my brothers, sister and several cousins showed heifers and Hereford steers at our local county fair and sometimes the Ohio state fair.” Julie and Martha Dixon operate River Circle Farm in Hartsville, Tennessee. River Circle Farm is a diverse enterprise, consisting of a cow-calf operation and row crop production (corn, beans, and wheat are produced on shares with a local grain farmer). The cattle herd consists of 20 purebred Hereford cows and 100 commercial cows. They use AI and Embryo Transfer to produce about 25 to 30 Hereford calves each year. The farm markets approximately 5 bulls and 10 heifers each year through private treaty, the Tennessee Beef Agribition, and the Burns Farms and Friends Sale. Julie says “The farm, like many others, is dwindling in size. It is the retirement plan. Hopefully, a small piece of it will always be here and have Hereford cattle walking on it!”
Julie addresses the members at the 2017 THA Annual Meeting. Tennessee Hereford Newsletter • Winter 2022 • 12
I asked Julie a few questions about her accomplishments and experiences in the Tennessee Hereford
Association and the Hereford industry in general. Here is what she had to say. What has been your favorite part of serving the Hereford industry? The people. I have heard it a hundred times myself and completely agree with the statement that Hereford people are the best folks to be around. Seeing families work together at shows and around the farm is so gratifying to me. The Hereford industry is still for the most part a family atmosphere and I am proud to be a part of it. What do you feel is your greatest accomplishment for the THA? First of all, it is not my accomplishment. We as a breed association and more specifically the show committee has put in a lot of work to get our state show to the caliber that it is today. It is not only a state show but is also a regional point show. The last several years we have had over 100 head in the open show and 75 to 85 in the junior show. Our state members and several out-of-state consignors continue to bring quality cattle year in and year out. It took many dedicated volunteers to get this show where it is today and to maintain it year after year.
but it is rewarding to see everyone come together for a common goal. I have been blessed to be a part of this organization for many years! Julie’s work ethic and selflessness have helped the Tennessee Hereford Association extend its outreach to promote Hereford cattle. Her work and support of Tennessee Hereford producers is greatly appreciated. We are grateful for the legacy she has given and look forward to her continued work and support of our association.
Julie’s grandmother at a local fair.
Why have you chosen to serve on the Agribition and Show committees? I try to look at it logically. I am 15 minutes from Lebanon fairgrounds where the Tennessee Beef Agribition and the state show is held. I think it has helped to have someone so close to these events. Many times, it has been useful to be on-site to get questions answered or details worked out before the event. I feel it has saved other committee members from having to travel unnecessarily.
The 2014 NAILE Reserve Champion bull RC Bohlin 307 ET.
What is your favorite “Hereford” memory? The 2014 show season. We were showing RC Bohlin 307 ET. He was by far the best bull we have ever raised. He was undefeated that year going into the NAILE. He was selected Reserve Champion national bull that day. He was a lot of fun! What advice do you have for someone who may want to get involved in the leadership of our association? We are always looking for new fresh ideas and new faces to lead us. If someone is interested in getting involved just introduce yourself to any of the board members. We are all easy to talk to and would welcome anyone willing to pitch in and help. The pay isn’t great,
Julie was presented her award at the THA State show in Lebanon. Pictured are Martha Dixon, Sally Wingler, Stan Webster, Julie, and Tommy Coley. Tennessee Hereford Newsletter • Winter 2022 • 13

BEEF QUALITY BAR RISING AHA Press Release. December 22, 2021 Consumers are willing to pay more for what they want. Domestic beef demand is the strongest it has been in three decades. Beef gained about 8% market share over the last two decades. U.S. beef exports through November 2021 were on a record pace in terms of volume and value. Kevin Good, CattleFax analyst and vice president of industry relations, said this is all a result of listening to the consumer. Good was speaking to members of the American Hereford Association (AHA), guests and allied industry partners during an educational forum at the organization’s Annual Membership Meeting and Conference in Kansas City, Mo, Oct. 22, 2021. “Think about grade, think about consistency. They are the driving points,” Good explained. “Today, we have a much better product than we had in the past and our customers are rewarding us with more dollars.” For perspective, 72.7% of all beef cattle graded Choice in 2020 and 10.2% graded Prime, according to USDA’s Estimated National Grading Summary. Just 10 years earlier, 60.1% were Choice and 3.4% were Prime. Through October this year, 72.6% were Choice and 10.1% were Prime. Whether regarded as the proverbial chicken or egg, Good pointed out carcass quality increased as the industry applied premiums and discounts in order to get what consumers wanted. “About 70% of the [fed] cattle we sell in the U.S. today are sold on a grid or formula, so cattle are rewarded once the hide is taken off,” Good explained. “Plainer, poorer cattle that used to be par are now at a discount. The premium

has gone away for middle-of-the-road cattle. You still have very distinct premiums for the top end.” Certified Hereford Beef® is an example of a quality-based program offering a value-based grid to producers and a dependably satisfying eating experience to consumers. Good expects the quality grade trend to continue. “There will be a time when we produce 20-30% prime in the national herd, and it’s not that far away,” Good predicted. “As we think about what our customer is demanding, let’s remember that last year, with COVID, we couldn’t sell Prime through restaurants, it went through retail. Every major retail chain in the U.S. now has a premium product offering. Consumers want it, so we’re going to have to provide it.” Good also shared price expectations for 2022, as cow numbers and fed cattle supplies decline and more leverage returns to producers. CattleFax projects calves to average $205/cwt., compared to $170 this year; yearlings to average $168, compared to $140 this year; fed steers to average $140, compared to $121 this year.
