Editors Point of View Kathryn Ingram

A couple of issues ago Dale Stith penned an article titled “The Do’s and Don’ts of a Consignment Sale”. One of the main points of the artilce was the timely marketing of animals. After reading the article, a gentleman asked if it made a difference in the price of the cow if it was sold as bred without a calf vs. selling as part of a cow-calf pair. He believed the prices of the actual cows were not that different, that the calf price just inflated the average. I decided to put this theory to the test using the recent ETPHA sale as a basis. So, the question is, how much monetary value is lost if you do the don’ts instead of the do’s? The average of cow-calf pairs at the sale was $3,508. If you take the calves out of that scenario, those cows averaged $2,304. On the other hand, the bred cows without calves averaged $1,505. That is close to an $800 discount per cow for the cows without calves. This is a limited study, only comparing one factor at one sale, however, the proof of a raised calf or a fresh udder to evaluate for maternal traits did pay greater dividends for those consignors. Timely marketing is also an issue for heifers. The averages for heifers at this sale were: bred heifers over 15 months of age $2,125, open heifers over 15 months of age $1,350, open heifers under 15 months of age $1,845. Our buyers have been taught that heifers should calve at 24 months, and that is not possible if they are not bred at 15 months. Once again, this is just one sale and one factor, but we need to consider our buyers’ prerequisites when determining the marketing of breeding stock. For this sale, the price of doing the don’ts was significant. Changing the subject, one of my students truly stumped me the other day with “Mrs. Ingram, is there a normal anything anymore?” I did not have an answer for her. If someone had told me last year that I would be required to take the temperatures of all players and fans entering a high school football game, I would have thought they were insane, but here we are.

“Normal” it may not have been, but we still had “Showtime in Tennessee”. I hope you all enjoy getting to hear the first-hand experiences of our youth competing at the National Junior Hereford Expo this past July. Tennessee had multiple class winners, a finalist for Herdsman of the Year, and one of our juniors was chosen a a new NJHA Director. Libby Rushton and Mason Collins have both written articles about their experiences at this year’s NJHE. The Tennessee State Hereford Show was also able to go on as planned. Congratulations to all of the winners in the open and junior shows. In closing, I would like to congratulate Billy Ashe on being named to the AHA Hall of Fame. He will receive this honor at the American Hereford Association Annual Meeting in Kansas City later this month. This is a great honor for a deserving family.

President Comments Jeremiah Malone What a start to the fall we are having in the Tennessee Hereford Association! Our State Show was a huge success! The fall sales have been Exceptional! Despite the Cov-19 pandemic! We are getting stronger together. I have just returned today from a hunting trip from the Great State of New Mexico. It was an awesome experience! Being able to enjoy the first signs of fall returning at 10,000 feet above sea level. The Majestic Elk are sounding off their location bugles. The Aspen Quake’s leaves are turning into the beautiful reds and orange fall colors! Many other things have brought fall into the picture as I had time to reflect on the Great Things God has given us all to appreciate. The thing that stuck in my mind the most, as a Hereford Producer was the Horned Hereford cows grazing through the high elevation meadows and woods. My friend hunting with me made the comment how nice the baldy calves are at their side. As we hiked over 50 miles the last 10 days through the wilderness it was a very consistent pattern. The Hereford pairs are in perfect flesh. The docility was the most apparent. As we walked through these girls at less than 10 yards,

none made a noise or ran off through the brush to ruin our hunt. My mind thought of us as breeders. This is the biggest testimony for Hereford Genetics we could have! Everything we breed for showed up on that mountain 90 miles from Juarez, Mexico! Feed Efficiency! Docility! Baldy Maternal! Excellent Feet! These things are our biggest selling point to our commercial customers! Hereford Genetics are the easiest selling point to complement black hided cattle anywhere! The baldy calves where the biggest up there. With this in mind, we cannot forget to tell our customers about the Tennessee Hereford Influence Sale in November! The sale will be at Tennessee Livestock Producers in Columbia, Tenn. Call them and get you tags for the sale. With our help this can remain the biggest sale in the Southeast for Hereford Influenced Cattle! Good Luck on Fall Calving!

A Dream Come True by Libby Rushton

Newly elected NJHA Directors Lauren McMillan, Ill., JW Cox, Ky., Ralston Ripp, Neb., and Libby Rushton, Tenn.

E

ach year at the Junior National Hereford Expo, everyone anticipates the closing ceremonies where four new Hereford Juniors are handed the maroon jacket. These juniors receive the opportunity of a lifetime to serve on the National Junior Hereford Association Board of Directors. During the 2020 closing ceremonies, my anticipation was much higher than usual.

The process of running for the board started well before the 2020 JNHE. During the months before, I thought about the basis I wanted to run my campaign on. After much discussion, I finally settled on “Connect With Libby”. From that point, I began to decide what I wanted to accomplish if elected and began to use my time learning more about the Hereford breed and association.

The week had been extremely long, but this is the moment I had waited for. I anxiously watched as each retiring director began to give their coveted jackets to a newly elected director, and wondered if the next could be me. I grabbed my mom’s hand as our retiring chairman stepped down off the stage, and after hugging her family began to walk in my direction. Putting on the maroon jacket for the first time is a feeling I will never forget.

Finally, the time came to travel to Kansas City. My entire week was spent working the ring, running errands, and my favorite, getting to walk the barn to speak to the delegates.

Ever since my first Junior National Hereford Expo in 2012, I have watched the hard work and dedication of the board of directors put in to ensure every junior has the best experience possible. I remember how much of an impact they had on me from such a young age, and I always knew that I wanted to be able to do the same for other juniors. When I was finally old enough to have the opportunity to run for the position, there was never any question. I hoped that I would be able to give back to the association that has given me so much over the years. Tennessee Hereford Newsletter • Fall 2020 • 8

The junior board candidates also spent two of our evenings giving speeches and answering questions to allow the delegates a better opportunity to get to know us and hear our ideas and goals to further our association. It was an extremely busy week, but the people I met and the experience I gained in the process is something I will never forget. As a Junior Board Director, we are the representatives of the Junior members. My campaign slogan was “Connect With Libby” because I truly want to see our breed connect in all aspects. Whether it be a generational connection, connecting our history to our future, or connecting our breed to others, I believe it is vital that we take advantage of these connections to further our breed even more.

The Rushton Family: Emma, Libby, Andrea, and Lee

We are all pieces of our association, and we all have a role to play in piecing together the future of our breed. I truly hope that over the next three years my team and I can urge juniors to get more involved and find their place in our industry and grow their love for Hereford cattle. The fact that I am finally being able to live out this dream is still so surreal. I’m so thankful for this opportunity and I’m so excited to see where God takes me the next three years!

Libby receives her maroon jacket from outgoing Chairman Taylor Belle Matheny.

The 2020 JNHE from a Junior’s Perspective by Mason Collins

F

rom the constant announcements to wear your masks to the socially distanced stalls, the 2020 Junior Nationals were definitely something to remember. The 9-hour trip to Kansas City was even longer because of a flat tire, but that never stopped us from having a good time. We got set up at just before midnight and started bright and early the next morning. As soon as the Junior Nationals started, Foster Wingler and I received gifts from the candidates running for the Hereford Board. That was just the start. With the absence of contests and the inability to mingle due to COVID, I missed out on being able to meet new people from all over the country. But the group from Tennessee made the best of our situation. We all came together in support of Libby Rushton’s campaign for the Junior Hereford Board, especially highlighted when we were all surrounding the TV anxiously waiting to see if she would receive the prized maroon Tennessee Hereford Newsletter • Fall 2020 • 12

jacket. We watched Tennessee be well-represented in showmanship, the bred and owned show, and the owned show. The one big difference to this year’s Junior Nationals was the downtime we encountered -a big difference from the past years-highlighted by the absence of in-person contests (ranging from the judging contest to the fitting contest and everything in between). Even with the downtime, I had a great time, ate very well, and enjoyed spending time with my cow showing family. As I close, I would like to give a special shoutout to Thomas Coop and Dee Peppers for coming out and helping me. I also want to thank my Granna and Pappa (Tommy and Linda Nipper) and especially my parents (Matt and Meredith Collins). Without them, I would not be able to do what I love and be a part of such a great organization in the AHA and be able to compete in the JNHE.
