The March winds are finally blowing and the mud is starting to dry up! I think we are all looking forward to winter’s end. The THA will be publishing a new directory in the August 2019 Tennessee Hereford Newsletter. This will be the first in several years. This special issue will have an expanded mailout and there are discounts for early submission! Advertising information is available on page one. March was a busy month for Hereford breeders across our state. Multiple sales, shows, events, and the THA annual meeting all took place last month. I would like to welcome Jeremiah Malone as our new President. He has some new ideas about the Hereford Influence Sale and would like your input. Look on page six to learn more. It is about time for the Junior’s show season to kick in gear. The Southeast Regional will be in Mississippi this June. Dates, location and hotel information are available on page eight. I hope you enjoy this issue and have a great summer! Tennessee Hereford Newsletter • Spring 2019 • 4

President’s Comments by Jeremiah Malone, THA President First off I would like to thank Julie Chapin on a Job Well Done for the last three years serving as President of our Tennessee Hereford Association. On Friday night of our annual meeting I was caught off guard and shocked when they asked me to take over for Julie. I knew she left big shoes to fill! I called Candace and we both thought that it may be challenging, but to serve the Tennessee Hereford breeders would be an honor! The Tennessee Hereford Association has been great to JM Cattle Company and it would be our pleasure to give back to the people who helped us get here in such a short period of time. Upcoming Events We have many exciting things happening this spring and summer in our state. First off is several production sales across the state. It is also nice to see and meet Hereford Breeders from all over the state and different parts of the country that you may not have the pleasure of meeting anywhere else. On March 23, Candy Meadows Farms Bull and Female Sale is in Lexington, Tennessee, and on April 6, Burns

Thank You!
Farms Female Event is in Pikeville, Tennessee. I believe it is Very Important to get out there and support all our State Sales. Like Billy Ashe says, “A rising tide raises all ships.” It is no doubt the higher averages are in our state wide sales the more our cattle are worth private treaty off the farm. Next up is the Tennessee Hereford-Influenced Feeder Calf Sale in Columbia, Tennessee at the Tennessee Livestock Producers barn on April 24, 2019. This sale should be the difference maker for you and your customers commercial baldies for the Certified Hereford Beef program. It is the only sale in Tennessee where baldies are a premium no matter the color. We need more cattle to keep this sale one of the top Hereford Influenced Sales in the country. It is my opinion that our customers are not utilizing this sale enough. I have been using the sale results over the last several years to show my customers they can make more money with Hereford Genetics than any other crossbreeding programs out there, and bulls sales have increased as a result of this marketing strategy. We are open to new ideas on these sales and would like your input to make it work better for you and your customers. Please feel free to call me with any suggestions @ 931-309-6805 at any time. We also have the Middle Tennessee Hereford Association Meeting and Sale in Cross Plains, Tennessee on April 26-27. This is also a great place to meet breeders from the state and market great Hereford Cattle as well. We have bought great females there in the past and know a lot of these cattle will work for most any program. In conclusion I would encourage you to come and bring a fellow breeder to Hereford on the Mountain hosted by Tommy & Kim Coley in Sewanee, Tennessee on the third of August. This is always a Top Notch Event! Not only is the Social a huge success every year, but the quality speakers they bring every year give us the most recent happenings in the Hereford Business to date. I hope to get to meet many new breeders this year. I hope you’ll have a great spring and summer this year in the Hereford Business!

Maple Syrup Urinary Disease -a letter from the AHA by Jack Ward, AHA Executive Vice President
A genetic abnormality, known historically to be found in the Hereford breed – Maple Syrup Urine Disease (MSUD) has recently been discovered to still have alleles present in the modern Hereford population. Furthermore, it has been brought to the attention of the American Hereford Association (AHA) that a genetic marker test exists for MSUD. Working with AHA’s designated lab (Neogen/GeneSeek), we have determined that the MSUD marker existed on some previously utilized DNA panels. We have used the panels to evaluate the frequency of the MSUD allele in the breed with a very low prevalence. Over 33,000 of previously genotyped animals have a marker result for MSUD and less than 1.0% are carriers of the abnormality. MSUD is listed as a Class 1 lethal abnormality and is a simple autosomal recessive gene. The MSUD gene must be present in both parents and passed on to the progeny in order to produce an affected calf. These calves are typically born without symptoms but by 2‐4 days of age become slow, dull and eventually recumbent. The calves will often throw their heads back, lying on their side unable to rise. These calves may have some swelling of the brain at autopsy, but diagnosis requires laboratory investigation. The calves have a defect in an enzyme that breaks down complex amino acids in the diet and the buildup of these in the body creates the urine odor and brain damage. The disease name comes from the smell of urine observed in human babies (not always noted in calves). Unfortunately, not all animals previously genotyped have a marker result for MSUD. Therefore, AHA (via Neogen/ GeneSeek) has made available a stand‐alone genetic test for MSUD through August 31, 2019 at the cost of $18 provided the animal has an existing DNA sample at the lab. To request the stand alone MSUD test contact the AHA customer service team at 816‐842‐3757. A starting point to your strategy to identify animals to test would be to run the potential defect carriers report. This report can be generated within Myherd.org or can be requested through the AHA customer service department. Going forward AHA will be implementing a higher density genotype panel (GGP 50K) that will include the marker information for MSUD. Therefore, all future DNA requests will provide MSUD results and be reported just like other currently observed abnormalities.
Tennessee Hereford Newsletter • Spring 2019 • 8
The other advantage of moving to the GGP 50K panel is that the additional marker content will allow for continued advancement of the Hereford breed. Moving forward, the cost of the basic DNA test will be $42 and $58 for the Horn/Poll combo test, respectively. Members who submit DNA samples via Tissue Sample Units will receive a $6 credit from AHA when the sample is successfully processed at the lab. Reports of MSUD to AHA and Dr. Steffen’s lab at the University of Nebraska Lincoln are absent in recent years. With the estimated gene frequency of less than 1%, presuming random mating and a 25% chance of an affected calf occurring with two parent carriers, the current occurrence of calf losses is estimated at less than 5 per one million births and is likely going unrecognized. Even with this low incidence rate, testing of at‐risk animals should be completed to ensure this abnormality does not propagate. Regards,
Jack Ward Executive Vice President

The THA Annual meeting on Friday evening was a time of fellowhip, information and good food! The meal was excellent, featuring Certified Hereford Beef prepared by the Trousdale County Cattlemen’s Association. The Mike Rogan family of Rogersville, Tennessee. was recognized as the family of the year. The Rogan’s will be highlighted in our Summer THA Newsletter. The Summer issue will contain the THA Directory. Special thanks to Jeremiah Malone, Mike Rogan, Eric Walker, and David Parker for purchasing prime pages in the upcoming directory. We finally have a Queen! Libby Rushton of Waverly, was officially inducted as the 2019 THA Queen. Libby will be a great ambassador for the Hereford breed and Tennessee.
Libby Rushton was crowned as the 2019 THA Queen by Glenda Rickman of the Hereford Women of Tennessee.
Tommy Coley, AHA Field Representative, informed the group about the recent discovery of Maple Syrup Urinary Disease (MSUDC) genetic carriers in the Hereford breed. His informative talk helped producers understand the disease and how to identify possible problems within their herd. Mr. Richard Brown of TLP spoke with the group abour the Hereford Influence Feeder Calf Sale. He entertained questions about the possiblity of changing the sale dates to better fit calving seasons. We have new blood on the board of directors, Dakota Brasher of Bath Springs, will take the place of outgoing director Todd Rankin. We also have new officers. Jeremiah Malone of Lawrenceburg will serve as your 2019 THA President and Mike Rogan of Rogersville will be your Vice President.

Herefords Represented at Ag Day on the Hill March 12, 2019, Nashville, Tennessee Approximately 98% of the Amercian population do not live on farms. This distance from agriculture often leads to misconceptions about our great industry. Events like the recent 2019 Ag Day on the Hill at the Tennessee State Capitol are vital to share what we do in a positive light.
showed his personal support for agriculture and interacted with the exhibitors. The beef industry was represented with Hereford cattle from Mason Collins of Lewisburg, Tennessee. His mother, Meredith Collins, stated “Mason was truly honored to have had the opportunity to display his Hereford cattle today at the 2019 Tennessee Ag Day on the Hill in downtown Nashville. As a fifth generation Hereford breeder and sixth generation farmer, he was humbled to represent the Hereford Breed and Beef Industry in the promotion of our great state’s Agriculture Industry.”

The Tennessee State Capitiol building was transformed to showcase everything from farm animals to a cross-cut sawing compietion. With national headlines about fake meat and getting “rid of farting cows”, it is more important than ever to get our true story told often and publically.
