Editor’s Point of View by Kathryn Ingram

As I write this it is still gray, forty degrees, and raining. The mud is making both humans and cows miserable. I keep reminding myself not to be too negative about all the precipiation. I am sure there will come a day soon that we are praying for rain. On the bright side, the spring sale season is upon us. We can look forward to purchasing that next bull or female for our herd while visiting with our Hereford friends. There are multiple sales across Tennessee and the Southeast this spring. Be sure to take advantage of the awesome genetics being offered. The Tennessee Hereford Association annual meeting will be held at 7:00 PM CST in Lebanon on Friday, March 8. This is a great opportunity to network with other Hereford breeders and get involved in our association. The Tennessee Hereford Women will also have a meeting at the conclusion of the annual meeting. I look forward to seeing all of you at various events this spring. I hope you enjoy this issue and be careful in all the mud! Tennessee Hereford Newsletter • Winter 2019 • 4

President’s Comments by Julie Chapin

On behalf of the Tennessee Hereford Association I would like to invite you to attend our annual meeting. It will be Friday night March 8th. Again, this year it will be held the night before our annual sale at the TN Beef Agribition in Lebanon, TN. If you haven’t been attending, we would love to see you! If it’s been a while since you have been, we would love to see you! If you attend every year, we will see you there! We have changed the meal this year. We will be cooking steaks fresh on the grill and will have all the fixings to go with it! The meeting portion will be as short and quick as possible, I promise! Also, make plans to stay in town Saturday morning for the Hereford sale. Cattle numbers and quality genetics are up this year. Consignors have picked quality cattle to bring for your evaluation. We have a great selection that will fit anyone’s program.

been in this position for 3 years. It is now time for a fresh face and new ideas. I have enjoyed the opportunity to meet and talk with cattle people that I might not otherwise have had the opportunity to do. I have also enjoyed working with all the board members and Glenda and Kay. I remember when I was elected the weight I felt to do the best job possible and to do what is fair and best for the organization. I hope beyond all else that I have achieved this mark. I also have learned that it takes all the cogs in the wheel working together to keep this organization thriving and rolling smoothly. We currently have great board members that are committed to Hereford cattle and continuing the TN Hereford Association as one of the premier breed organizations in the state and beyond!

Lastly, it has been my sincere pleasure to represent this great state organization as your president. I have

Tennessee Junior News by Libby Rushton, TJHA President

As Tennessee Juniors look back on the year of 2018, I am sure we are all reminded of the amazing memories we have made over the past months. Around 10 Tennessee Juniors ended the year by exhibiting at NAILE in Louisville, Kentucky. Tennessee was represented well, with the good placings including a first in the open show. 2018 was filled with good cattle, and great friends which makes the anticipation for 2019 even greater. Across the state, excitement is building among juniors as we begin to prepare for the numerous upcoming shows. The Tennessee Junior Beef Agribition show and sale (March 8-10) is just a few short months away. Other shows such as southeast regionals and Junior National Hereford Expo will also be upon us soon. This year’s Southeastern regionals will be held in Batesville Mississippi June 6th-9th. Southeast Regionals is a fun and slightly bigger show than many local ones, and is a great time to compete against some new faces! Also, this year’s Junior National Hereford Expo will be held in Denver Colorado July 6th through 13th. I know this will be a long haul for Tennessee Juniors, but JNHE will as always be full of amazing opportunities and one of the highlights of the year!

I always enjoy showing, but JNHE also provides so many more competitions and events. More than 10 Tennessee Juniors attended last year, but we hope to see even more new faces! Just a few short weeks later, the annual Faces of Leadership conference will be held in Omaha Nebraska, July 31st through August 3rd. Last year, I attended my first conference in San Francisco California and it was truly the experience of a lifetime! This is a way to meet and connect with friends from across the country and learn about different aspects of the agriculture and cattle industries. I will never forget the memories made and the friends met and am excited about another trip this year. I encourage all juniors who are eligible to look into attending this conference…it is definitely something you won’t forget! This year is going to be full of many shows with lots of competition and lots of fun, so let’s all get ready. I am very excited to see what this year holds for myself, Tennessee Juniors, and the Hereford breed as a whole. See you down the road!

TAEP 2018-2019 Genetics Requirements by Kathryn Ingram

Tennessee producers have benefited for many years from the Tennessee Agricultural Enhancement Program or TAEP. The genetics program has continued to expand allowing a maximum reimbursement of $2,000 for a combination of bulls, heifers, herd testing, and AI supplies. Bulls with National Cattle Evaluation (NCE) EPDs are eligible for a maximum of $1,200 reimbursement. Genomic Enhanced EPD bulls are eligible for up to $1,600 and qualifying bred heifers can receive a $400 reimbursement. Each year it seems the TAEP tweaks their genetic requirements. It can become confusing for both the buyers and the sellers. Listed below is an abbreviated version of this year’s beef guidelines for reimbursement for bulls and heifers. Bull Genetics Requirements 1. Must have an 840 EID tag for identification. This tag should be used to identify the bull on the health papers reporting the required veterinary testing and on the receipt. 2. Test negative for BVD-PI (Certificate required). 3. BSE – must be performed by a licensed veterinarian within 90 days of purchase or reimbursement 4. Receipt – must have the following information: seller name, address, and phone, bull ID, price, sale date, and buyer name 5. Bulls must have either NCE EPDs from their breed association (with a minimum .15 accuracy for calving ease and growth categories) or have genomic enhanced EPDs. 6. The bulls must qualify as one of the following: •

Balanced- must meet EPD requirements for Calving Ease, Growth, and Maternal traits.

Calving Ease -must meet EPD requirements for Calving Ease, Growth, and Maternal traits.

Terminal- must meet EPD requirements for Calving Ease and Growth.

Beef Heifer Requirements 1. Approved USDA identification (840 EID tag or metal tag). 2. Copy of Sire’s pedigree with EPDs. Heifer must be sired by a registered bull with EPDs from their breed association. 3. Heifer must be bred to a sire that meets the TAEP Calving Ease bull type requirements for the Calving Ease or Birth Weight EPDs. Copy of Service Sire pedigree with EPDs also required. 4. Must be dewormed and received 2 rounds of the following vaccines: IBR, BVD, PI3, BRSV, 7-Way Clostridial, Lepto, and Vibrio. 5. Seller affidavit must be signed. 6. Signed Vet affidavit showing results of pregnancy test, weight (minimum of 800 lbs. at time of pregnancy test), frame/muscle scores 7. Certificate showing a negative PI-BVD test. 8. Receipt – must have the following information: seller name, address, and phone, heifer ID, price, sale date, and buyer name.

Better than Playing the Lottery? The THMP Sale Report by John Woolfolk

Summary of THMP Sale October 18, 2018

They did not win the Powerball lottery on October 18th, but cattle producers consigning to the 2018 TN Hereford Marketing Program left the barn feeling like they were pretty lucky. Six hundred head of Hereford and Hereford cross feeder cattle were gathered at TN Livestock Center for the 20th Annual Fall Sale hosted by TN Livestock Producers. A quote in the USDA Weekly Market report summed up the market offering by saying “light to moderate demand for unweaned cattle and very good demand for weaned and vaccinated cattle”. All THMP calves were preconditioned with a minimum 45 day weaning period, castrated, dehorned, wormed and had two rounds of vaccines. Calves over 700 lbs. were especially in strong demand as buyers competed for groups that would be ready for harvest during April, which offers a higher price than the May/June harvest period. The THMP started in 1999 in an effort to minimize or reduce market discounts on Hereford cattle selling through local auctions. The THMP benchmark has always been to compare our prices to the average prices of similar size and grade cattle that sell across the state during sale week. The chart shows that in 2018 discounts were certainly not only eliminated, but sellers received premiums of up to $148 per head. As one consignor said, “Those that chose to market at local markets today instead of participating in the THMP, had about the same chance of getting the average market price as they did of having a winning lottery ticket”.
